Sometimes—but being noticed does not always mean immediate failure. In the documented examples here, discovery can trigger a search you can escape, change patrols or your mission rating, raise the risk of an alarm-driven abort, or end the game instantly if a mode makes discovery fatal. The key is to distinguish suspicion from a confirmed sighting, and a recoverable alert from a fail condition.
“Caught” can mean several different things
Stealth games do not necessarily treat detection as one on/off event. A noise or brief glimpse may make an enemy investigate; a confirmed sighting may start a pursuit; losing the pursuer may move the game into a search or caution state; and a particular mode may turn any confirmed sighting into an immediate loss. Those are materially different outcomes, even if each begins with an enemy noticing something.
It helps to read the game’s feedback as a state change rather than assume that every detection cue means the run is over. Look for the wording and behavior associated with the alert: is the enemy checking a sound, actively searching, attacking, calling for help, or triggering a stated mission failure? The answer tells you whether to hide, escape, wait, or restart.
Suspicion, confirmed sighting, and combat
A suspicion cue usually means an enemy has a reason to investigate, not necessarily that the game has registered a full stealth failure. A confirmed sighting is stronger: the enemy has identified the player, and the response may escalate. Combat is a further step in some systems, not just another word for being seen. Bethesda Support, for example, describes four NPC detection levels, ranging from a glimpse or non-threatening sound that can fade to active searching, confirmed sighting, and combat. In that system, the final level counts against stealth-based achievements or trophies. This is an example of graded awareness, not evidence that all stealth games use the same scale.

Alert, search, and recovery
An alert may persist after you leave an enemy’s line of sight. The game can remember the incident, send guards to investigate, or keep patrols on edge. Recovery therefore has two meanings: you may survive the encounter, but still have a less favorable mission state than before it began.
What the documented games do when you are detected
The official manuals show why there is no single genre-wide answer. The table summarizes rules documented for specific versions or modes; it should not be read as a survey of all stealth games or every release of these games.

How to tell whether detection is recoverable
Before deciding whether to continue or restart, answer these questions in order. The game’s HUD, objective text, pause menu, manual, or challenge description may spell out the relevant rule.

- What threshold did you cross? A brief glimpse, suspicious sound, confirmed sighting, and camera detection may be treated differently. Check whether the alert message says an enemy is investigating or has identified you.
- What is the immediate response? Watch whether enemies investigate a location, search, call backup, attack, or activate an alarm. An investigation can be an opportunity to move; an alarm may create a separate operational risk.
- Can you break the response? Try the recovery action the game supports: leave line of sight, hide, wait for a search to end, or, where the mechanics allow, change to an uncompromised disguise. Do not assume one tactic applies across games.
- Did the objective or evaluation change? Check for a compromised status, a changed objective, a mission-abort warning, or a rating condition that has become impossible. Continuing may still be worthwhile even if a perfect stealth rating is no longer available.
- What rules govern this run? A standard mission, challenge, and one-chance contract can have different consequences. Read any mode-specific discovery or restart condition before treating a failure as recoverable.
This sequence separates the immediate danger from the longer-term cost. For example, getting out of sight may stop an attack, but it does not necessarily erase evidence, restore a disguise, or recover a “never spotted” condition. Conversely, a temporary search does not necessarily mean the mission has failed.

Detection can cost a rating even when the mission continues
Mission completion and stealth performance are not always the same outcome. The Feral Interactive HITMAN manual lists “Never Spotted” as a rating condition and also checks whether bodies were found. It records noticed kills and video evidence as well. That means a player may finish the objective while losing a clean-run condition; surviving discovery is not proof that the incident had no consequence.
Some alert states can still be improved. In the manual’s stated rule, changing into an uncompromised disguise lowers Unconscious Witness, Compromised, Hunted, or Combat to Searching. That is a reduction in alert level, not a promise that every record of the incident disappears or that a perfect rating is restored. When the score matters, distinguish “I can get out of danger” from “I can still meet every scoring condition.”

Alarms can be more serious than a sighting
In the Ubisoft Tom Clancy’s Splinter Cell manual, the operational risk is framed around alarms. An enemy who detects Sam or suspects an intruder may alert others or trigger an alarm, and the manual warns that indiscretion with alarms can lead Third Echelon to abort a mission. The important distinction is that the passage connects mission abort to alarm handling; it does not say that any single sighting automatically fails every mission.
When an alarm appears, treat it as a separate condition from being seen. Check whether the game gives an alarm count, warns about escalation, changes the objective, or says the mission is at risk. A sighting may be survivable while repeated or mishandled alarms make the objective untenable. Do not infer a universal alarm limit from one game’s rules.

Modes can change the answer completely
The clearest example of an explicit discovery fail condition is Metal Gear Solid 2: Sons of Liberty. KONAMI’s Master Collection Version PC manual says that during missions in Sneaking Mode, or when “GAME OVER IF DISCOVERED” is selected in the main game, the game ends the moment an enemy or surveillance camera spots the player. Under those rules, there is no search phase to outlast after a confirmed sighting.
By contrast, the Metal Gear Solid Master Collection Version Xbox manual describes a recoverable sequence: after enemies lose sight, a countdown starts, and successful evasion returns the game to infiltration. The manual also says that enemies in alert mode call for backup and attack. In Metal Gear Solid 2, caution is another meaningful state: patrols are more alert, and some locations may have more guards than usual. These details apply to the documented versions, not automatically to every edition, platform, sequel, or difficulty setting.
Challenge rules can impose their own stakes even when the underlying game normally permits recovery. The Feral Interactive HITMAN manual describes Elusive Targets as one-chance contracts: once objectives begin, the contract cannot be restarted, and dying fails it. That is a stricter run context than an ordinary mission. Before taking a risky route, establish whether the consequence comes from the game’s standard detection system or from the specific challenge’s restart rules.
Should you keep going or restart?
Restarting is sensible when the game has declared a fail condition, when a one-chance run is already lost, or when your goal depends on a condition you can no longer satisfy. Otherwise, compare the cost of continuing with the value of the remaining objective. A compromised rating may matter little if you only want to finish the story; it may matter greatly if you are pursuing a clean rating or a stealth achievement.
- Continue if the alert is a search or evasion state, the objective remains active, and your goal does not require an unbroken stealth condition.
- Reassess if the mission is active but a disguise, alarm, body, or recording has changed the situation. Look for a documented way to lower the alert before deciding.
- Restart or accept the run as failed if the mode explicitly ends on discovery, a one-chance contract has failed, or a required rating condition is no longer achievable.
The most reliable rule is to judge the specific state and run objective, not the word “caught.” Official manuals for the examples above document everything from a temporary alert that can clear to immediate game over; they do not establish which consequence is statistically most common across the genre.
