Squid do have microscopic sensory hair cells, but they are inside specialized sensory organs—not a coat of visible hairs on their skin. Their statocyst hair cells help detect movement and resemble hair cells in vertebrate balance and hearing systems. That similarity describes cell structure and function; it does not mean squid have human-like ears.
What “hair cells” means in a squid
Hair cells are sensory cells named for the fine projections on them. In squid, these cells occur in particular sensory structures rather than covering the body. One important location is the statocyst, an organ that senses linear and angular acceleration. Its sensory cells respond to movement through tiny hair-like bundles.
Scharr and colleagues describe the resemblance this way: “The statocyst contains mechano-sensitive hair cells that resemble hair cells in the vestibular and auditory systems of other animals.” Their 2014 study calls the statocyst the best candidate organ for mediating squid auditory responses. This is a useful comparison with vertebrate balance and hearing systems, not evidence that squid hear in the same way people do.

How statocyst hair cells detect movement
In squid and cuttlefish, sensory hair cells and associated neurons form strips called cristae within the statocyst. A sail-like cupula is linked to the underlying sensory cells by cilia. When movement shifts the cupula, it bends those structures and stimulates the cells. This arrangement provides sensory input about motion and orientation. Research on statocyst cristae describes these cellular and neural interactions.

A separate hair-cell organ helps control head position
A study of Lolliguncula brevis—one squid species—described proprioceptive hair cells on the dorsal neck beneath the nuchal cartilage. Proprioception is the sense of body position. Each cell carried up to 300 kinocilia, roughly 30 microns long, arranged in as many as seven rows. These measurements apply to the studied species and receptor area, not to all squid.
The researchers’ behavioral results support a role for this neck receptor organ, together with visual input and the statocyst, in controlling head-to-body position. The study of neck proprioceptors therefore describes another specialized sensory structure—not hair growing across a squid’s skin.

Squid skin color structures are different
Squid can change their appearance using skin structures such as chromatophores, which produce pigment patterns, and iridophores, which reflect colors. These are distinct from the hair cells in the statocyst and neck sensory organ. A 2012 Marine Biological Laboratory report described electrically stimulated color shifts in longfin inshore squid: traced nerves produced progressive iridophore shifts from red and orange toward yellow, green, and blue over 15 seconds in that experiment. The finding concerns color-changing skin, not sensory hairs.

What a laboratory study found about squid statocysts
In a 2014 laboratory experiment, researchers injected anesthetized longfin inshore squid (Doryteuthis pealeii) with saline or neomycin at concentrations from 0.05 to 3.0 mmol l−1. Five hours later, they examined hair-cell bundles in the macula statica princeps. Bundles in neomycin-treated animals were missing or damaged, with the amount of damage varying by dose. This result is specific to that experiment and species; it does not establish effects from ordinary antibiotic use in people or exposure in wild squid. The study report is indexed by PubMed.
