Not strictly. The Sony WH-1000XM5 supports Hi-Res Audio Wireless over Bluetooth when it uses the LDAC codec, but Sony describes LDAC as a lossy compression system. It can carry high-resolution source content without the usual down-conversion (except DSD), yet the Bluetooth signal is not bit-for-bit identical to the original recording.
Both the headphones and the playback device must support LDAC. If the phone, computer or other source does not, the WH-1000XM5 uses another supported codec instead. The included connection cable provides a wired alternative, although the cited Sony specifications do not establish the resolution or lossless behavior of every wired source setup.
What the WH-1000XM5 actually supports
Sony lists Bluetooth 5.2 and three music codecs for the WH-1000XM5: SBC, AAC and LDAC. The same specification page identifies the headset as supporting High-Resolution Audio and High-Resolution Audio Wireless through LDAC. You can verify those model details in Sony’s WH-1000XM5 specifications.

|---|---|---|
| Bluetooth version | 5.2 | The radio and Bluetooth feature set are based on Bluetooth 5.2. |
| Supported music codecs | SBC, AAC, LDAC | The source device and headset negotiate one of these codecs for Bluetooth music. |
| Hi-Res Audio Wireless | Yes, through LDAC | LDAC provides Sony’s designated high-quality wireless path for compatible high-resolution content. |
| Strictly lossless Bluetooth transmission | No | Sony characterizes LDAC as using lossy compression, so the transmitted waveform is not guaranteed to match the source bit for bit. |
The important distinction is between a high-resolution wireless pathway and lossless transmission. “Hi-Res Audio Wireless” is a certification and capability description for handling high-resolution material over a wireless link. It is not a promise that every sample arrives unchanged.

Why LDAC is not the same as lossless audio
Lossless transmission preserves the original digital data after decoding. If a track is decoded to PCM, every sample value is reproduced exactly, even though a lossless encoder may reduce the file size. Lossy transmission discards information judged less important and reconstructs an approximation at the receiver.
Sony’s own LDAC explainer makes that distinction explicit: it says codecs carrying the Hi-Res Audio Wireless logo, including LDAC, can transmit Hi-Res Audio content while keeping Hi-Res Audio sound quality over Bluetooth. In the same explanation, Sony says that with lossy compression, the waveforms before and after compression are not identical. Read the full explanation in Sony’s LDAC end-user information.
Those statements are compatible. LDAC can accept a high-resolution source and avoid reducing it to a lower-resolution format before encoding, while still applying lossy compression during the Bluetooth transfer. A listener may prefer the result to lower-bitrate Bluetooth codecs, but “better than SBC” does not become “bit-perfect.”

Sony illustrates the engineering problem with approximate figures: Bluetooth bandwidth is about 1 Mbps, while some Hi-Res Audio content can require about 4.6 Mbps. A codec must therefore reduce or encode the data efficiently to fit the wireless link. These are Sony’s explanatory figures, not a universal limit for every Bluetooth connection or a measurement of your particular phone and listening environment.

Sony also states that LDAC can transmit approximately three times more data than conventional SBC. In the WH-1000XM5 Help Guide, that comparison is conditioned on SBC at 990 kbps for 96/48 kHz content or 909 kbps for 88.2/44.1 kHz content. It is a manufacturer-stated comparison, not an independent test, and it does not mean every LDAC connection runs at its maximum rate.
How LDAC works with the WH-1000XM5
The Bluetooth audio path has several separate decisions:
- Source capability: Your phone, tablet, computer or other player must implement LDAC.
- Pairing and profile: Music playback uses the Bluetooth A2DP connection. The source and headset exchange their supported codecs during connection.
- Codec selection: If both ends support LDAC and the operating system permits it, LDAC can be selected or negotiated. Otherwise, the connection uses AAC or SBC, which are also listed for the headset.
- Encoding: The source encodes the music for the Bluetooth link. LDAC’s design allows high-resolution material to remain in a Hi-Res pathway, with DSD identified by Sony as an exception to its no-down-conversion description.
- Decoding: The WH-1000XM5 decodes the Bluetooth stream and drives its headphone electronics. The result is not a wired, bit-identical copy of the source because LDAC is lossy.
The WH-1000XM5 Help Guide documents SBC, AAC and LDAC support and explains the LDAC/A2DP relationship. Sony provides the guide as a WH-1000XM5 Help Guide PDF.
Both devices need LDAC
Buying an LDAC-capable headset does not add LDAC to a source that lacks it. Sony’s compatibility guidance says the headphones and the playback device both need LDAC for a high-quality transmission of Hi-Res sources. Sony also warns that matching Bluetooth profiles and codecs do not guarantee a connection with every device; compatibility depends on the particular hardware and software combination. Its support article is available at Sony’s compatible-Bluetooth-device guidance.

Do not infer support from a label such as “HD audio” or from the presence of a high-resolution music subscription. The source operating system, regional model, firmware and application can determine which codec is offered. A service may provide a lossless file, but the last Bluetooth leg can still be lossy if LDAC is used.
How to use LDAC when your source supports it
Menu names differ by phone and operating system, so use the following as a verification procedure rather than a promise of a particular screen layout.
- Check the source specifications. Confirm that the exact phone, computer or Bluetooth transmitter lists LDAC. If it does not, the WH-1000XM5 cannot create an LDAC link by itself.
- Pair the headphones normally. Put the WH-1000XM5 into pairing mode, select it in the source device’s Bluetooth settings and complete pairing.
- Open the connected-device details. Look for an audio codec, HD-audio or developer-audio setting. Where the source exposes codec choices, select LDAC and apply the change.
- Reconnect if required. Some systems apply a codec choice only after disconnecting and reconnecting the headphones. Allow the connection to settle before checking again.
- Verify the active codec. Check the same device-details screen or the source manufacturer’s diagnostic information. Seeing the word “Bluetooth” alone does not prove LDAC is active.
- Use a suitable source file or stream. LDAC can carry ordinary content too; a high-resolution source is necessary if your goal is to transmit high-resolution material, but it does not make the Bluetooth link lossless.
If LDAC is not available
- If the source never lists LDAC, treat that as a source limitation until its manufacturer documents otherwise.
- If LDAC appeared previously but is unavailable after an operating-system update, check the source maker’s current codec and firmware documentation.
- If the connection uses AAC or SBC, the WH-1000XM5 is still functioning; it is simply using another codec from its supported list.
- If a particular app does not expose codec information, do not claim that it is using LDAC without confirmation from the operating system or device documentation.
Bluetooth LDAC versus the included wired connection
The headphones are supplied with a connection cable and a USB cable, according to Sony’s product information. A wired route removes the Bluetooth codec from the signal path, but the available sources do not establish the resolution, digital-versus-analog behavior, or lossless result for every cable, source device, application and headphone setting. The cable should therefore be described as a wired alternative, not automatically as a guaranteed lossless Hi-Res path.

| Route | Required equipment | Codec or link qualification | What can be stated confidently |
|---|---|---|---|
| Bluetooth with LDAC | WH-1000XM5 plus an LDAC-capable source | Lossy Bluetooth compression; Sony associates LDAC with Hi-Res Audio Wireless | High-resolution content can use the LDAC pathway without the stated down-conversion, except DSD; it is not strict lossless. |
| Bluetooth with AAC or SBC | WH-1000XM5 plus a source supporting the negotiated codec | Lossy Bluetooth codecs | Audio playback works, but it is not the WH-1000XM5’s LDAC Hi-Res Audio Wireless route. |
| Included connection cable | WH-1000XM5, connection cable and a compatible source output | Wired; cited materials do not specify every source path’s resolution or lossless behavior | Bluetooth codec compression is avoided, but the exact end-to-end result must be established for the particular source and setup. |
| USB cable | WH-1000XM5 and USB power/data connection | Sony’s cited materials list the cable but do not establish USB audio operation for every source | Do not assume that the supplied USB cable is a universal lossless-audio input. |
What “three times more data” does—and does not—tell you
The approximately three-times figure is easy to overstate. Sony presents it as a comparison with SBC under specified bitrate and sample-rate conditions. It indicates that LDAC can allocate substantially more data to the audio stream than the conventional comparison case. It does not prove that LDAC reproduces every sample, that all devices select the highest LDAC mode, or that a listener will hear a fixed threefold improvement.

Actual codec negotiation is device-dependent. The WH-1000XM5’s support for LDAC is necessary but not sufficient: the source must support it, the software must make it available, and the connection must successfully negotiate it. The cited documentation does not provide a universal negotiated bitrate for every phone, computer, operating-system version or environment.

“Hi-Res Audio Wireless means lossless.”
No. The designation identifies a high-quality wireless capability. Sony simultaneously describes LDAC as capable of carrying Hi-Res content and as using lossy compression. Use “Hi-Res Audio Wireless via LDAC,” not “lossless Bluetooth,” when describing the WH-1000XM5.
“A lossless streaming subscription guarantees lossless playback.”
No. The subscription can provide a lossless source file, but the Bluetooth codec is a separate stage. With LDAC, the final wireless transmission remains lossy; with AAC or SBC, it uses those codecs instead.
“The headphones support LDAC, so every phone will use it.”
No. LDAC must be supported at both ends, and Sony does not guarantee connection to every device merely because profiles or codecs appear to match.

“The highest LDAC setting is always active.”
There is no basis in the cited specifications for that assumption. Sony’s three-times comparison is tied to particular SBC bitrate conditions, while the negotiated mode for a specific source is not established universally.
“The cable is automatically a certified lossless Hi-Res input.”
The included connection cable offers a wired option, but the cited product material does not define every wired source path’s resolution or lossless behavior. Verify the complete source-to-headphone chain before making that claim.
Which connection should you choose?
Choose LDAC Bluetooth when convenience matters
Use LDAC when your source supports it and you want the WH-1000XM5’s designated Hi-Res Audio Wireless route without a cable. It is the appropriate Bluetooth choice for high-resolution content, provided you understand that the transfer remains lossy.

Use AAC or SBC when compatibility is the priority
If your source does not support LDAC, AAC or SBC allows the headphones to operate normally. Do not describe that connection as LDAC or as Hi-Res Audio Wireless through LDAC.
Use the connection cable when you want to remove Bluetooth from the chain
A wired connection avoids Bluetooth codec negotiation. Its exact fidelity still depends on the source output, cable path and headphone configuration, so the word “lossless” requires verification for that specific setup rather than an assumption based solely on the cable being included.
Bottom line for the WH-1000XM5
The accurate answer is: the WH-1000XM5 supports Hi-Res Audio Wireless over Bluetooth with LDAC, but it does not provide strict lossless Hi-Res Bluetooth transmission. LDAC is lossy, both devices must support it, and Sony’s published bitrate comparisons are conditional manufacturer figures. For a Bluetooth connection, check that LDAC is actually negotiated; for a wired connection, evaluate the complete source and cable path instead of treating the included cable as proof of universal lossless playback.
