Sometimes—but not every part of the system. A battery-powered door sensor can continue detecting an opening, yet the hub, alarm base station, router, modem, cellular service and subscription determine whether that event becomes a local siren, a cellular alarm signal or a phone notification. Internet loss and electrical power loss are separate problems, so check each layer of your setup.
The three layers that determine outage performance
People often ask whether “the sensor” works during an outage, but a smart alarm is a chain of devices. A reliable answer requires checking three layers: the sensor, the hub or base station, and the path used to deliver alerts.
1. The sensor’s own battery
Most magnetic contact sensors use a coin cell or another battery. If that battery still has charge, the sensor can usually detect that the door or window moved. Detection alone does not guarantee that anyone will be notified: the sensor must still communicate with a powered hub or alarm panel.

Aqara lists up to two years of battery life under normal usage for that sensor, and says sensors compatible with its M1S hub have two-plus years of battery life. Those are manufacturer estimates; frequent openings, cold temperatures, weak wireless conditions and an aging battery can shorten actual life.

2. The hub or alarm base station
The hub receives the wireless contact signal and decides what to do. It may run a local automation, sound a siren, log the event or pass an alarm to another service. If the hub loses power and has no charged backup battery, a battery-powered sensor has nowhere to report.
Backup operation is not necessarily identical to normal operation. A base station may keep sensor monitoring and alarm signaling active while shutting down cameras, Wi-Fi, displays, cloud integrations or other energy-intensive functions. The exact behavior is set by the model’s firmware and power-saving mode.
3. The communications path
Phone notifications and app control need a route beyond the sensor and hub. That route might be your broadband connection, a cellular modem in the base station, or both. A working sensor and hub can still produce no push notification if the router is off, the modem has no power, cellular coverage is unavailable or the account does not include backup connectivity.

Think of outage capability as separate questions: Did the sensor detect the opening? Did the hub receive it? Did a local siren or automation run? Did the system transmit an alarm over cellular service? Did the vendor’s cloud deliver a push alert? A “yes” at one stage does not imply “yes” at every stage.

What happens when the internet fails but power remains
Local detection can continue
If the sensor, hub and home power are still operating, a system that supports local processing may continue to react. Aqara says its M1S hub keeps local automations functioning when the internet connection goes down. A rule such as turning on a local light or sounding a locally connected alarm can therefore continue without cloud access.
That statement applies to local automations supported by the M1S; it does not promise that every third-party integration, camera recording or cloud scene will work offline. Integrations that require an outside server can stop even while the sensor-to-hub link remains healthy.
Remote app features may stop
Your phone is normally reached through the internet. Without a working broadband connection, an app may not show current status, accept remote arm or disarm commands, display event history or deliver a push notification. The sensor can still be reporting locally while the cloud interface appears frozen.
Cellular backup can restore a communications path
Some alarm hubs include a cellular connection. Ring says Alarm Pro can provide backup internet and alarm signaling when its compatible subscription is active. Its documented 24/7 Backup Internet allowance is 3 GB per month; additional data may incur charges. This is a service detail for that product and plan, not a general feature of smart door sensors.

Cellular failover also depends on local coverage, the carrier used by the base station, account status and the functions the manufacturer permits during backup. Confirm those details before treating cellular service as a guaranteed replacement for broadband.
What happens during a power outage
The sensor may remain alive while the hub goes dark
A charged sensor battery can outlast a household power interruption, but the hub, Wi-Fi router and modem may all shut down together. Unless the hub has its own backup supply, the sensor cannot trigger a local automation or alarm after the hub loses power. Restoring electricity to the sensor alone does not solve that gap.
Backup modes deliberately reduce features
Ring states that Alarm Pro runs normally on its internal battery for about 15 minutes, then continues monitoring sensors and sending alarm signals while other features are turned off to conserve energy. In Low Power Mode, Ring lists up to 24 hours of operation, with most functions and Wi-Fi disabled. Ring also lists up to eight hours from each compatible Power Pack. Actual duration varies with usage and the selected mode.

Your router and modem need power too
A battery-backed hub cannot keep app access over a dead router or modem. For remote notifications through broadband, the networking equipment must remain powered. Cellular-equipped alarm panels can bypass that dependency for the functions they support, but cameras and other Wi-Fi devices still need both electricity and a network.

How to find out what your own installation will do
- Identify the exact sensor and hub models. Record the model name, hardware revision and firmware version. A sensor’s battery specification does not reveal the hub’s backup behavior.
- Read the outage section in the hub’s current support documentation. Look for separate statements about local automations, alarm signaling, app access, cameras and Wi-Fi. “Works during an outage” is too vague to rely on by itself.
- Check whether backup power is built in. Note whether the base station has an internal battery, removable battery pack or no backup at all. Verify that the battery is installed, charged and within its service life.
- Check the communications plan. Determine whether cellular backup is included, requires professional monitoring or consumes a data allowance. Confirm the carrier has coverage at the installation address.
- Map the power dependencies. List the hub, router, modem, network switch, siren and any bridges. A backup battery in only one device may leave the communication path broken.
- Review the power-saving mode. Find out which features are disabled on battery: Wi-Fi, cameras, live view, cloud recording, integrations and remote commands are common exclusions.
- Check notification wording. Some services can transmit an alarm to a monitoring center without guaranteeing a normal app push. Find out whether outage and restoration notices are supported for your account.
- Perform a controlled test. Notify household members and any monitoring provider first. Disconnect internet while leaving power on, then test a door; restore internet and verify the event log. On another occasion, remove mains power from the hub and networking equipment, test local detection, and restore power before testing remote access. Never create a false emergency dispatch.
How to interpret published runtime figures
“Up to” runtime is a ceiling for a named base station and operating mode, not a promise for every installation. Battery age, temperature, wireless traffic, alarm activity, cellular signal strength and attached accessories all affect consumption. A hub that spends the outage streaming video or repeatedly searching for a weak cellular signal can run for less time than a quiet hub monitoring a few contacts.
Manufacturers also describe different endpoints. One figure may mean the panel remains powered; another may mean that sensor monitoring and alarm transmission continue after nonessential features shut down. Compare the functions that remain available, not just the number of hours printed in a specification.
Replace batteries with the chemistry and rating specified for the base station. SimpliSafe’s guidance for the referenced model calls for four NiMH cells and specifically cautions against regular alkaline batteries. Using the wrong type can reduce capacity, damage the charger or create a safety issue.

Common outage symptoms and fixes
The door event appears locally but no phone alert arrives
The sensor and hub are probably communicating, while the internet or cloud path is unavailable. Check whether the hub supports cellular failover and whether your plan enables it. If not, expect the local alarm behavior to return before remote notifications do.
The sensor shows offline immediately after a blackout
Check the hub’s backup battery, not just the sensor cell. Confirm the hub’s power adapter, battery status and any low-power setting. If the router and modem are also off, restore them before judging app connectivity.
The app cannot arm or disarm during the outage
Some systems intentionally block remote commands while conserving battery. SimpliSafe documents keypad arm and disarm during a power interruption while restricting app and online-account control. Use the local keypad if your model supports it, and avoid repeated remote retries that drain backup power.
Backup ends much sooner than expected
Check whether the system entered its reduced-function mode, whether cameras or Wi-Fi stayed enabled, and whether the battery is old or incompletely charged. Weak cellular coverage and frequent alarms can also increase consumption. Treat the published maximum as a planning reference, then replace a degraded battery or add only accessories confirmed compatible with your exact model.
Preparation checklist
- Keep sensor and hub batteries charged and replace them on the manufacturer’s schedule.
- Write down which functions are local, which require cloud access and which use cellular service.
- Confirm your monitoring or backup-internet subscription is active and understand any data allowance or extra charges.
- Verify cellular coverage at the property rather than assuming a phone signal guarantees alarm-panel coverage.
- Ensure the hub’s backup battery is the specified type and that any optional power pack is compatible.
- Decide how occupants will arm, disarm and silence a local alarm when the app is unavailable.
- Test internet-loss and power-loss scenarios separately at least once, following your provider’s notification rules.
- Keep the manufacturer’s current outage instructions for your exact model; firmware and plan behavior can change.
Bottom line
A smart door sensor often can detect an opening during an internet outage, and it may continue during a power outage if its hub has usable backup power. Local alarms and automations are separate from phone notifications. To know what will actually happen, verify the sensor battery, hub backup, router and modem power, cellular coverage, subscription and the reduced-function mode your system uses when energy is limited.
