Usually, no. Most smart appliances can perform their basic, local job without an internet connection: an oven can often cook from its control panel, and a washer or dryer may still run a selected cycle. The features that usually stop are the connected ones—phone control, remote monitoring, push notifications, voice commands, camera viewing, and some downloadable or model-specific functions.
That is not a universal rule. Offline behavior depends on the appliance’s exact model, software generation, and manual. Whirlpool says, “If you just want to use your smart oven to cook traditionally, you typically do not need internet access,” while also warning that functionality without Wi-Fi varies by model. GE makes similar model-specific qualifications for its smart ranges and wall ovens.
What an internet connection does on a smart appliance
A smart appliance generally has two layers of functionality. The first is the local appliance itself: heating elements, motors, pumps, sensors, buttons, knobs, and an on-device display. The second is the connected layer, which uses Wi-Fi, an app, an online account, or a compatible voice assistant.
When the internet is unavailable, the local layer may continue working while the connected layer becomes unavailable. A network outage therefore does not automatically turn a smart appliance into a nonfunctional appliance, but it can remove the conveniences that made it “smart.”

Local operation
Local operation means starting and supervising a function from the appliance’s own controls. Traditional cooking is the clearest example. Whirlpool says traditional cooking on its smart ovens typically does not require internet access. A washer, dryer, dishwasher, or refrigerator may likewise retain some local controls, but the exact offline behavior must be confirmed for that model rather than inferred from another product.
Connected operation
Connected operation sends commands or status information through a home network and an online service. Typical examples include starting a cycle from a phone, checking progress while away, receiving an alert, or issuing a voice command. Manufacturers describe these as connected features and attach conditions such as Wi-Fi availability, an app, an account, a remote-access setting, or a compatible voice service.
Which features work offline?
| Feature | Internet dependence | What to expect when disconnected |
|---|---|---|
| Ordinary cooking or running a local cycle | Often not required, but model-specific | The appliance may continue through its built-in controls. Check the exact owner’s manual; Whirlpool says traditional smart-oven cooking typically works without internet. |
| Remote start, pause, or control from a phone | Usually requires Wi-Fi, the manufacturer’s app, and sometimes remote access enabled on the appliance | Phone commands normally fail or remain unavailable until the connection is restored. |
| Progress monitoring | Usually a connected feature | The appliance may keep running locally, but its current status may not appear in the app. |
| Push notifications | Usually requires a connection to the appliance service | Alerts such as cycle completion or other status messages may not arrive during the outage. |
| Voice control and connected-home integration | Requires supported Wi-Fi, the relevant app or account, and a compatible voice service | Voice commands are unavailable while the required connection is down. |
| In-oven camera viewing | Requires Wi-Fi for enablement and continuous connectivity on applicable GE models | Live or remote viewing stops when the appliance cannot maintain its connection. |
| Special or downloadable cooking functions | Model-specific; some require Wi-Fi to enable | Availability depends on the appliance family. GE identifies Air Fry, Precision Cooking, Dehydrate, and Voice-to-Open as examples that generally require Wi-Fi to enable on specified range and oven families. |
| App recipes, content, or connected services | Depends on the manufacturer and service | Online content and service functions are unavailable without the connection. Sub-Zero, Wolf, and Cove state that wireless internet is required for their app and connected functions. |

Smart ovens and ranges
Ovens usually provide the clearest separation between offline basics and online extras. You can often select a temperature and cooking mode from the control panel without Wi-Fi. Whirlpool’s wording is deliberately qualified: traditional cooking “typically” does not need internet access, and offline functionality varies by model.

GE documents a more complicated case for certain smart range and wall-oven families. Some features, including Air Fry, Precision Cooking, Dehydrate, and Voice-to-Open, generally require Wi-Fi to enable. GE also says that remote control and in-oven camera functions can require Wi-Fi both to enable the feature and to keep using it. Losing the network can therefore affect more than phone access; it can prevent a model-specific function from being activated or maintained.
Do not assume that a cooking mode with the same name behaves identically across brands. Before buying or troubleshooting, look up the model number and read the feature requirements for that exact oven.
Washers and dryers
A washer or dryer may still allow a locally selected cycle when disconnected, but remote controls, progress information, and alerts are connected functions. Whirlpool’s setup documentation for certain washer and dryer flows specifies a 2.4 GHz Wi-Fi band and cautions that the connection method may not work with every router.
The 2.4 GHz instruction is not a universal requirement for every appliance. It is a reminder to check the supported band and setup method for the particular model. If your router offers separate network names for 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz, use the band named in the appliance’s instructions during setup.

Refrigerators, dishwashers, and other connected appliances
Other categories follow the same division: local controls may remain available, while app monitoring, alerts, voice commands, and online content depend on connectivity. The evidence from manufacturers is feature- and model-specific rather than a single rule for every refrigerator, dishwasher, or range. Treat the product manual and support page as the authority for offline behavior.
What to do when the internet goes out
Use this sequence before assuming the appliance itself has failed:
- Try the built-in controls. Select the normal cooking mode or cycle from the appliance’s panel. If local operation works, the outage is affecting connected functions rather than the basic appliance controls.
- Separate local and remote symptoms. A missing app status, notification, camera view, or voice command points to the connected layer. A control panel that will not respond is a different problem and may require the appliance’s troubleshooting procedure.
- Check the model’s offline instructions. Use the owner’s manual or manufacturer support page for the exact model and generation. Do not rely on instructions for a similar-looking appliance.
- Wait for the network to return before retrying remote commands. Repeatedly sending a remote start request while the appliance is offline cannot restore the connection.
- After service is restored, check the app status. Confirm that the appliance appears online before testing remote control, monitoring, alerts, or voice commands.
- Re-enable remote access if the model requires it. Whirlpool identifies remote-enable settings as a prerequisite for specified connected controls. A restored Wi-Fi signal alone may not be enough if that setting is off.
Do not claim that every feature continues during an outage. A disconnected appliance may retain ordinary local operation while losing online-only functions, and some model-specific features may not be available at all until Wi-Fi is restored.

How to troubleshoot a failed setup
Confirm the supported network band
Read the appliance’s connection instructions for the required Wi-Fi band. Whirlpool’s instructions for certain washer and dryer setup flows call for 2.4 GHz. If your router exposes only a different band at the appliance’s location, setup may fail even though other devices connect successfully.

Check signal where the appliance is installed
A phone may show a usable signal near the router while the appliance, located behind cabinets or on another floor, cannot maintain one. Perform setup at the appliance’s actual location and follow the manufacturer’s signal guidance. A compatible router or improved coverage can be relevant when the documented band or range is unavailable, but the manufacturer material does not establish that a new router is generally necessary.
Follow the specified setup path
Some products require an app-assisted pairing flow, an appliance-side setting, or a particular sequence. Use the exact path in the model’s manual. Whirlpool notes that a documented connection method may not be compatible with all routers, so a failure does not necessarily indicate a defective appliance.
Check app, account, and voice-service prerequisites
Connected features may involve more than Wi-Fi. Maytag describes app-based monitoring and control and voice-assistant functions for supported products. Whirlpool also describes voice control with compatible devices. If Wi-Fi is working but a command still fails, verify that the appliance is registered in the correct app, remote access is enabled where required, and the voice service supports that product.

How to compare two smart appliances
Compare connected products by asking separate questions about offline use and online features. A longer list of smart functions is not automatically better if the functions you need require a persistent connection that your installation cannot provide.

| Persistent connection | Does a feature need Wi-Fi only during setup, or continuously while it is being used? | Manufacturer requirements; GE specifies continuous connectivity for certain remote and camera functions |
| Network requirements | Which bands are supported, and is the documented setup method compatible with your router? | Installation guide; certain Whirlpool washer and dryer flows specify 2.4 GHz |
| App and account dependency | Is an app, account, remote-enable setting, or compatible voice assistant required? | Connected-feature instructions from the manufacturer |
| Online content | Do recipes or other service functions disappear when the appliance is offline? | App and service requirements; Sub-Zero, Wolf, and Cove require wireless internet for their connected functions |
Record the exact model number while comparing. Two appliances in the same product family can have different generations, firmware paths, or feature requirements.
Do you need internet for your use case?
You only want ordinary operation
If your priority is cooking, washing, drying, or cleaning from the appliance itself, internet may not be necessary. Confirm the model’s offline capabilities before purchase, especially when a feature list emphasizes app control or downloadable modes.
You want to control the appliance while away
Plan on a working network and the manufacturer’s connected path. Remote start, pause, monitoring, and notifications are normally unavailable when the appliance cannot reach the service. Some models also require you to enable remote access locally before the phone controls will work.

Treat connectivity as a continuing requirement, not a one-time setup step. GE’s documentation states that applicable remote-control and in-oven-camera functions need Wi-Fi for enablement and continuous use. Voice control similarly depends on a supported appliance, app, account, network, and compatible voice service.
Your home network is limited
Check band support and coverage before choosing a connected model. A product that needs 2.4 GHz for setup may be unsuitable until your network exposes that band where the appliance is installed. The requirement is model-specific, so verify it rather than buying networking equipment preemptively.
Common mistakes to avoid
- Assuming “smart” means “internet required for everything.” Local controls and connected functions are separate layers.
- Assuming all smart ovens behave alike. Whirlpool and GE both qualify their statements by model, and GE lists feature requirements for specified families rather than every oven.
- Confusing setup connectivity with continuous connectivity. Some features need Wi-Fi each time they are used, not merely when the appliance is first paired.
- Ignoring the router band. Certain Whirlpool washer and dryer setup flows specify 2.4 GHz and may not work with every router.
- Testing only the app. During an outage, test the appliance’s built-in controls separately before concluding that the appliance is unusable.
- Assuming a restored internet connection restores every feature automatically. Remote-enable settings, app registration, or voice-service compatibility may still be required.
The practical answer
Smart appliances generally do not need internet for every basic task. They do need a working connection for the conveniences that depend on a phone, cloud service, voice assistant, camera stream, online content, or model-specific connected feature. Because manufacturers implement these functions differently, the reliable answer is always tied to the exact model: identify what works locally, list which features require Wi-Fi, confirm whether the connection must be continuous, and check the supported network band before purchase or troubleshooting.
