Sometimes—but a Wi‑Fi connection is not an energy-efficiency rating. A smart appliance can save energy when its controls change heating, cooling, run times, or demand in a useful way. The appliance must also be efficient in its basic operation. An internet connection, app, voice control, or display by itself does not prove that your household will use less electricity or gas.
The strongest quantified evidence is for ENERGY STAR certified smart thermostats, which control heating and cooling, rather than for smart refrigerators, washers, dryers, or dishwashers as a broad category. For other connected appliances, the likely benefit depends on the specific feature, your settings, utility program, climate, occupancy, and whether you would otherwise have used the appliance in the same way.
What makes an appliance “smart,” and why that does not guarantee savings
In this context, a smart appliance is a household product with networking, sensors, software, or remote controls. It may report energy use, send an alert, adjust a schedule, learn occupancy, communicate with a utility, or accept commands from an app or voice assistant.
Those functions can alter behavior, but they do not automatically improve the underlying machine. A highly efficient conventional refrigerator can use less energy than a less-efficient connected refrigerator. Likewise, a connected washer still consumes energy for its motor and water heating; the app does not erase those loads.

Separate two questions before buying:
- How efficient is the appliance itself? Look for the applicable efficiency certification, cycle ratings, water use, and operating costs.
- What does the connected feature change? Identify the specific action—such as avoiding an unnecessary heating cycle, shifting a run time, or preventing a door from being left open—and whether you will actually use it.
ENERGY STAR’s connected-functionality guidance lists refrigerators, freezers, clothes washers, clothes dryers, dishwashers, and other categories. It describes possible functions such as a refrigerator door-left-open alert and communication with a utility demand-response program, with consumer permission and the ability to override a utility request. These are mechanisms for managing use or grid demand, not a published guarantee of a particular household bill reduction. See ENERGY STAR’s connected-functionality overview.
The clearest evidence: ENERGY STAR smart thermostats
Heating and cooling are often a large part of a home’s energy use, so a thermostat can affect more consumption than a small always-on appliance. ENERGY STAR reports that an average ENERGY STAR smart thermostat saves approximately 8% of heating and cooling bills, or about $50 per year. The live ENERGY STAR FAQ does not state a publication year for those figures. The organization also warns that actual savings can be higher or lower depending on climate, comfort preferences, occupancy, and the heating and cooling equipment in the home. Read the figure as an average, not a payback promise. The source is ENERGY STAR’s smart thermostat FAQ.
ENERGY STAR makes a stronger evidence claim about the label than about connectivity in general: “Only smart thermostats that earn the ENERGY STAR label have been independently certified, based on actual field data, to deliver energy savings.” Service providers analyze a full year of anonymized, aggregated data from customer homes for the certification process. That field-data basis is why a certified thermostat is a more defensible energy-saving purchase than an arbitrary connected thermostat.
What the certification criteria measure
The criteria concern runtime reductions, not a guaranteed reduction on an individual utility bill. At the lower 95% confidence limit of the weighted national average, a certified model must demonstrate:

| Measure | ENERGY STAR criterion | What it means |
|---|---|---|
| Heating runtime | At least 8% reduction | A certification threshold based on aggregated field data; it is not a promise for every home. |
| Cooling runtime | At least 10% reduction | Also measured against the weighted national average at the lower 95% confidence limit. |
| Heating, 20th-percentile result | At least 4% | A distribution-based certification requirement, not an individual bill estimate. |
| Cooling, 20th-percentile result | At least 5% | Another certification threshold derived from field performance. |
| Network standby power | Average no more than 3.0 W | A thermostat-specific standby limit; it should not be generalized to every connected appliance. |
See the current ENERGY STAR smart thermostat product criteria for the definitions and test requirements. Runtime is only one part of a bill: equipment efficiency, fuel type, weather, rates, and how long the system runs all affect the amount you pay.
How connected appliances can reduce use—or merely add convenience
Alerts that prevent waste
A door-open alert can help prevent a refrigerator from running against a warm room for hours, especially when the appliance is in a garage or a busy household repeatedly leaves the door ajar. The saving comes from correcting the condition, not from the network radio. If nobody responds to the alert, there is no established saving.
Scheduling and delayed starts
A washer, dryer, dishwasher, or water heater may let you schedule operation for a time encouraged by your utility. A delayed start can shift demand away from a peak period, and some utilities may offer a demand-response program. Shifting the same cycle does not necessarily reduce the total energy consumed; it can reduce grid stress or qualify for an incentive. Check the program’s terms, opt-out controls, and any comfort or timing trade-off.
Energy reports and coaching
Usage dashboards can reveal an unusually long dryer cycle, a refrigerator with a problem, or a high-temperature wash setting. The report is useful only if you act on it. Treat an app’s estimate as a diagnostic aid unless it explains the measurement method, interval, and assumptions.

Occupancy-based automation
ENERGY STAR’s smart home energy management system (SHEMS) program describes scheduled operation, energy-saving suggestions based on usage, and automation tied to occupancy. These systems can turn equipment down when rooms are empty or coordinate several devices. Outcomes depend on configuration: an incorrect occupancy sensor, an aggressive schedule, or a household override can erase the intended benefit. Program details are available in ENERGY STAR’s smart home energy management systems guidance.
Standby power is a limitation, not a reason to assume every smart appliance wastes more
A connected product can draw power while it appears to be off so that it can listen for a command, maintain a network connection, or run sensors. The U.S. Department of Energy says standby consumption contributes to product energy use and describes IEC 62301 as a method for measuring it. Its standby-power guidance explains the measurement issue.
There is no category-wide result in the available evidence showing that standby power cancels the savings of smart appliances as a group. The 3.0-watt network-standby limit cited above applies to ENERGY STAR smart thermostats, not refrigerators, washers, or other connected products. For a purchase, compare the appliance’s efficiency and measured or published standby specification when available, then judge whether the connected function addresses a meaningful source of waste.

Smart thermostat purchase cost
ENERGY STAR gives a broad smart-thermostat price range of $50 to $300. The live consumer guidance page does not state a year for that range, so treat it as a guide rather than a current quote. Your total cost may include an installation visit, a required adapter, wiring work, taxes, or a subscription.

Compare the purchase and installation total with the household-specific savings you can reasonably expect. A $50 annual average is not a guaranteed return, and a home with mild weather, little schedule variation, or an already well-optimized programmable thermostat may save less. A home with frequent vacancy periods, high heating or cooling bills, or large temperature setbacks may have more opportunity.
Local rebates
ENERGY STAR directs shoppers to product listings and utility rebates that can depend on ZIP code and the serving utility. Rebates are therefore local, can change, and may have eligibility rules such as enrollment in a demand-response program or installation by a qualified contractor. Check the current offer before buying and confirm whether it applies to the exact model and your account.
Other smart appliances
For a connected refrigerator, washer, dryer, or dishwasher, do not calculate payback from the app feature alone. First compare the appliance’s standard efficiency and operating-cost information with non-connected alternatives. Then assign value to the feature you will use: avoiding a spoiled load, catching a door left open, shifting a cycle, or coordinating with a utility. If you cannot identify a recurring action, the connection may be a convenience purchase rather than an energy investment.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesCompatibility and installation checks before buying a smart thermostat
- Identify your HVAC equipment. Record whether you have a furnace, heat pump, boiler, central air conditioner, electric baseboard system, or another configuration. A thermostat designed for one type may not control another.
- Check the manufacturer’s compatibility guide. ENERGY STAR advises confirming that the model works with your heating and/or cooling system. Some installations require a common wire (C-wire) or an included power adapter.
- Photograph the existing wiring. Turn off power at the HVAC breaker, remove the thermostat cover, and label wires before disconnecting anything. If you cannot identify the terminals safely, use a qualified installer rather than guessing.
- Confirm the control features. Verify heat-pump staging, auxiliary heat, humidifier or dehumidifier control, multi-zone operation, and remote sensors if your system needs them.
- Check network and account requirements. Confirm the thermostat supports your Wi-Fi band and that basic scheduling remains available if the internet or vendor service is unavailable.
- Price the complete installation. Include the thermostat, adapter, labor, taxes, and any recurring service. Apply a verified local rebate only after checking its rules.

Once configured, communication and control between Matter devices can be achieved directly on the local network.
- 【Compact & Flame Retardant Design】Avoid blocking additional outlets with its compact design, and plug in your WiFi smart plug with confidence thanks to its UL certified flame retardant design and 2-year limited warranty.
- 【App & Voice Control】Control your WiFi smart plug from anywhere, anytime via the free Kasa App or just give voice commands to Siri, Amazon Alexa, Google Assistant or Samsung SmartThings. Your favorite smart assistant enables you to have a truly hands-free experience.
- Record a baseline. Save several utility bills that cover comparable weather and occupancy. For a single appliance, record cycle counts, settings, and approximate run times.
- Change one important variable. Enable the schedule, occupancy automation, delayed start, or alert response you intend to use. Avoid changing several appliances at once.
- Keep settings consistent. Note unusual weather, guests, vacations, comfort changes, and equipment repairs. These can overwhelm a small appliance effect.
- Compare like with like. Heating and cooling should be compared using weather-normalized or similarly mild and severe periods when possible. Appliance cycles should be compared at similar loads and temperatures.
- Check the bill, not only runtime. A shorter runtime may not produce a lower bill if rates, fuel prices, or equipment staging changed. Review both consumption units and charges.
- Continue only if the behavior works. If alerts are ignored or the schedule causes manual overrides, simplify the automation. A dependable modest action beats a complicated feature nobody uses.
Common ways smart-appliance savings claims go wrong
- Confusing connectivity with efficiency: A connected model can still have a poor efficiency rating. Compare the core product first.
- Applying thermostat evidence to every category: The quantified 8% and $50 figures are for ENERGY STAR smart thermostats, not a general smart-appliance average.
- Treating certification thresholds as personal results: Runtime criteria describe how certification is evaluated across field data; they do not predict your exact bill.
- Counting load shifting as energy reduction: Moving a dishwasher cycle to another hour may help the grid without using fewer kilowatt-hours.
- Ignoring household behavior: Occupancy, comfort preferences, schedules, and responses to alerts determine whether automation changes anything.
- Forgetting standby draw: Networked electronics can consume power while idle. Consider the published standby specification where available.
- Overlooking compatibility: A thermostat that needs an adapter or cannot control your HVAC stages may cost more, perform poorly, or require replacement.
- Assuming a rebate is universal: Utility offers vary by location, model, date, and account conditions.
Who is most likely to benefit?
An ENERGY STAR certified smart thermostat is most compelling when your home has substantial heating or cooling costs, regular periods of vacancy, schedules that change, or a utility offering a compatible rebate or demand-response program. It is less compelling when your HVAC system is incompatible, your schedule is already optimized, or you rarely heat or cool the home.
A connected major appliance is worth considering when its specific function solves a problem you actually have—for example, reliable door alerts, useful diagnostics, or a utility-controlled schedule you approve. If the attraction is only remote control or a novelty display, expect convenience rather than a measured energy return.
Bottom line: buy the function, not the Wi‑Fi badge
Smart appliances can save energy when automation changes a meaningful load and the household uses that automation consistently. The best-supported purchase case is an ENERGY STAR certified smart thermostat, backed by field-data certification and an ENERGY STAR-reported average of about 8% of heating and cooling bills, or $50 per year. For other connected appliances, evaluate the underlying efficiency separately and demand a clear mechanism for savings—an alert you will act on, a schedule that reduces unnecessary operation, or a utility program whose terms you accept. Connectivity alone is not proof of lower energy use or a lower bill.
