Some screen-free health bands require an ongoing membership, while others do not. “Screen-free” describes the hardware interface, not the business model. WHOOP bundles its band and app insights with membership plans; Amazfit says the Helio Strap has no required subscription; and Polar describes Polar Loop as both screen-free and subscription-free. Check the exact model, app terms, and checkout conditions for your country before buying.
Screen-free describes the display, not the billing
A screen-free band has no built-in display for showing steps, heart rate, notifications, or workout data. You normally review measurements in a companion phone app instead. Removing the screen can make a device smaller, quieter, and less distracting, but it does not dictate whether the manufacturer charges a recurring fee.
Manufacturers can sell the hardware outright, include app access at no extra charge, or make the device part of a membership. The only reliable way to know is to check the subscription terms for the specific model and the market where you will activate it. A “screen-free fitness tracker” and a “subscription-free wearable” are not interchangeable descriptions.

Membership includes the band and continuing app access
WHOOP uses a membership model. Its official comparison page says that each membership includes a device, a charger, and a set of features, with different tiers aimed at different health and fitness goals. This means the initial hardware is not the whole ownership cost. Access to the app and the ongoing insights associated with the membership depends on keeping the account active under the applicable plan. WHOOP’s US support page says annual rates are listed for its plans and that monthly memberships are no longer a standard signup option, although some existing renewals can be exceptions. Because those rules, prices, and availability can change, use the current checkout and the WHOOP membership-pricing support page rather than relying on an old price quoted elsewhere.
No required subscription after buying the hardware
Amazfit describes the Helio Strap as requiring no subscription. Its US product page lists continuous heart-rate tracking and allows the band to be worn on the wrist or upper arm. The page displayed a price of $99.99 when it was checked, but that is a vendor listing for the US market at that time, not a guaranteed worldwide or permanent price. Confirm the current price, stock, supported features, and any app terms before ordering: Amazfit Helio Strap.
“No required subscription” means you are not required to maintain a paid membership to use the product as described by the manufacturer. It does not mean every feature is independent of a phone or that all future software services everywhere will remain unchanged. The practical questions are which measurements can be viewed in the app, whether an account is needed for setup, and what happens if the manufacturer changes its service.

Polar’s Loop manual calls the device screen-free and subscription-free. It provides sleep, heart-rate, activity, and recovery information through Polar Flow rather than on the band itself. Polar’s setup instructions show that the device must be configured and synchronized through the Polar Flow app: Polar Loop user manual and Polar Loop setup guide.

That is a different trade-off from a membership model. You avoid a recurring subscription according to Polar’s stated terms, but you still depend on the company’s app and syncing process to see the information. Subscription-free does not mean screen-equipped, phone-free, or guaranteed to work without the manufacturer’s software.

What you can and cannot assume about a subscription-free band
You can avoid a recurring membership charge
If the manufacturer says no subscription is required, your budget can be based primarily on the purchase price rather than a compulsory monthly or annual renewal. That makes the cost easier to predict for someone who plans to keep the band for several years. Still, verify whether the statement applies to the exact model, country, and software account you will use.
You cannot assume identical analysis or features
A membership-based product and a no-subscription product may collect similar types of signals while presenting very different analyses, coaching, history, or reports. The available documentation establishes different plans and feature sets; it does not establish that the products provide equivalent insights or measurement quality. Do not choose solely by counting sensors or by assuming that “no monthly fee” means the same service at a lower lifetime cost.
You may still need a phone and an account
Both the screen-free design and the app-based workflow matter. Without a display, you generally cannot inspect detailed readings on your wrist. Polar explicitly directs users to Polar Flow for setup and syncing. For any model, check the supported phone operating systems, whether an account is mandatory, how often synchronization occurs, and what data remains visible if you stop using the app or change phones. Those are ecosystem dependencies, not subscription fees, but they affect everyday ownership.

Calculate the real cost over the time you plan to wear it
Compare total ownership cost rather than the first number shown on a product page. For a hardware purchase without a required membership, the basic calculation is the purchase price plus any required accessories or replacement costs. For a membership product, add the applicable recurring charges for the same period. If the plan includes the hardware, do not add a second full hardware price unless the checkout actually charges one.

For a fair comparison, choose a time horizon such as one, two, or three years and use the same assumptions for both products. A low upfront price can become expensive when a membership renews, while a higher one-time price can be cheaper over time if the feature sets meet your needs. Conversely, paying once is not automatically better if the app lacks the analysis or history you actually want.
How to check the terms before buying
- Identify the exact model and market. Product families can have different generations, and a US page can show different currency, availability, or terms from a European page.
- Open the manufacturer’s membership or support page. Look for whether the hardware is included, which features require an active plan, and whether the displayed price is annual, monthly, introductory, or renewal pricing.
- Read the checkout screen. Confirm the billing interval, renewal date, cancellation rules, taxes, shipping, and whether a subscription is preselected. For WHOOP, compare the checkout details with the current membership-pricing support information.
- Check the app requirement. A screen-free band normally relies on a phone. Polar’s instructions direct users to Polar Flow for initial setup and synchronization; verify equivalent requirements for any other model.
- Check what remains available without payment. Distinguish raw readings, historical charts, recovery scores, coaching, exports, and other analyses. Do not infer parity between products from a shared measurement such as heart rate.
- Save the terms and receipt. Prices, plan names, and availability can change. Keeping the order confirmation and the applicable policy helps if a renewal or feature-access question arises later.
Common mistakes and how to avoid them
Mistaking “screen-free” for “free of subscriptions”
The absence of a display says nothing about billing. Treat the screen as a hardware characteristic and the membership as a separate purchasing decision.

The Helio Strap’s $99.99 figure came from the US product page at the time it was accessed. WHOOP’s membership page and support information also show that currency and plan terms vary by region. Use your local product page and checkout for the amount you will actually pay.

Assuming a one-time purchase means lifetime software support
A no-required-subscription statement answers the payment question; it does not promise unlimited app availability, unchanged features, or perpetual compatibility with every phone. Review the current app requirements and support policy, especially if you expect to keep the band for many years.
Choosing by price without checking the data workflow
A screen-free device is useful only if you are comfortable opening an app to review results. Confirm where sleep, heart-rate, activity, and recovery information appears, how synchronization works, and whether the phone dependence fits your routine. Polar’s documentation makes this workflow explicit through Polar Flow.
Which type fits your priorities?
- Choose a membership model if the tier-specific analysis and continuing app experience matter more to you than avoiding recurring payments, and you accept that plan terms govern access.
- Choose a no-required-subscription model if predictable ownership cost is your main concern and the manufacturer’s included app features cover your needs.
- Prioritize phone and app compatibility if you want reliable access to your history. A subscription-free band still depends on its companion ecosystem for setup and review.
- Check wearing location and comfort if wrist placement is inconvenient. The Helio Strap’s official page specifically describes wrist or upper-arm wear; other models may not offer that choice.
- Recheck terms immediately before ordering because prices, plan availability, regional currencies, and feature access are subject to change.
Bottom line
Screen-free health bands do not have a universal subscription rule. WHOOP is sold through membership plans that include the wearable and app access, while Amazfit says the Helio Strap requires no subscription and Polar describes Polar Loop as subscription-free. Compare the complete cost for your intended ownership period, the features that remain available without recurring payment, and the phone or app requirements in your region before deciding.
