Yes. SATA ports matter if you plan to connect SATA hard drives or SSDs, keep existing SATA drives, or add storage without replacing those drives. The key is not just how many ports a motherboard lists: an M.2 socket can share connections with a SATA port, and the effect depends on the board and the type of M.2 drive. Check the exact motherboard manual against your planned drives before you buy or install anything.

What SATA ports do

A SATA port connects a compatible storage drive to the motherboard. If your PC uses SATA drives, you need enough usable ports for the drives you intend to install. A motherboard with more SATA ports gives you more connection options, but its listed total may not equal the number available alongside every M.2 configuration.

SATA-IO calls the third revision “SATA 6 Gb/s” and gives its maximum interface transfer rate as up to 6 Gb/s. That is a link-rate specification, not a promise of a drive’s measured real-world throughput. SATA-IO also says SATA 6 Gb/s is backward compatible with SATA 3 Gb/s and SATA 1.5 Gb/s devices. SATA-IO’s naming guidelines give the rates below.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
SATA revision Maximum interface transfer rate
Revision 1.x Up to 1.5 Gb/s
Revision 2.x Up to 3 Gb/s
Revision 3.x Up to 6 Gb/s

For clarity, SATA-IO recommends the speed labels “SATA 1.5 Gb/s,” “SATA 3 Gb/s” and “SATA 6 Gb/s” rather than treating “SATA I,” “SATA II” or “SATA III” as proper names for the interface speeds. Older compatible SATA devices can connect to a SATA 6 Gb/s interface, though backward compatibility does not make an older drive operate at the newer interface’s maximum rate.

How M.2 can affect SATA port availability

M.2 describes a form factor, not a single storage interface. An M.2 socket may support a SATA drive, a PCIe drive such as an NVMe SSD, or both, depending on the motherboard. Some boards share connections between an M.2 socket and one or more SATA ports. Installing a drive in that socket can therefore make a particular SATA port unavailable—but it is not safe to assume that every M.2 drive disables the same port or any port at all. Kingston’s SATA and M.2 SSD FAQs explain the distinction and recommend checking motherboard documentation.

A board-specific example

The Gigabyte H510M-H/B560M-H V2 manual documents four SATA 6 Gb/s connectors. Its sharing table says that SATA3 3 is unavailable when an M.2 SATA SSD is installed; the table shows that port available when the M.2 device is PCIe or when no M.2 device is installed. That is the rule for the cited board documentation, not a general rule for other motherboards.

Port totals also differ between models. For example, MSI’s PRO Z690-A specifications list six SATA 6 Gb/s ports from the Z690 chipset. These two model examples illustrate why the exact manual and specifications matter; they are not a survey of all motherboards.

How to tell whether a motherboard has enough usable ports

  1. List the drives you plan to connect. Count SATA hard drives and SSDs separately from M.2 drives. Include any existing SATA drives you intend to keep.
  2. Check the exact motherboard model and revision. Find its specifications for the listed SATA port count, then open its manual for the M.2 and SATA sharing table. Do not rely on a product family name or a general rule about M.2.
  3. Confirm what each relevant M.2 socket supports. Check whether it accepts SATA drives, PCIe/NVMe drives, or both. If the manual identifies shared ports, note whether the rule changes with the installed M.2 drive type.
  4. Count the ports that remain usable in your planned configuration. Compare that number with your SATA drive count. If it falls short, choose a different compatible storage configuration or a motherboard with enough usable ports.

For a comparison between boards, use their exact model specifications and manuals. Compare the listed SATA count, the ports that remain available with your intended M.2 drives installed, and the supported interface for each relevant M.2 socket. The headline port count alone cannot answer all three questions.

When SATA ports matter—and when they may not

They matter if you need to

  • Connect one or more SATA hard drives or SATA SSDs.
  • Keep an existing SATA drive while adding other storage.
  • Leave room for planned SATA storage expansion.

They may matter less if

  • Your storage plan does not include SATA drives.
  • You have checked that your chosen M.2 configuration leaves enough SATA ports for every drive you still plan to use.

These are configuration decisions, not claims that one storage type is universally better. M.2 and SATA refer to different aspects of a drive connection, and an M.2 device can itself use SATA or PCIe. Check the drive and motherboard specifications rather than deciding from the connector’s shape or the word “M.2” alone.

What you need to connect a SATA drive

A SATA drive needs a compatible motherboard connection and power from the PC’s power supply. A SATA data cable connects the drive to the motherboard; it is a separate accessory that may be needed if you do not already have one. SATA-IO lists cables among products using SATA speed labels, but the cited information does not establish a particular cable brand or model.

  • Connectivity: PCIe 5.0, 3x M.2 Slots, USB-C, Sensor Panel Link

If a drive is not detected after installation, first check that its data cable is connected to the intended motherboard port and that the drive has power. Then consult the board manual’s sharing table: the selected SATA port may be unavailable because of an installed M.2 drive. If so, connect the drive to another port the manual identifies as usable.
