Most Samsung Galaxy users do not need a separate antivirus app for routine malware scanning. Android includes Google Play Protect, and supported Galaxy models add Samsung security controls such as Auto Blocker. Keep those protections on, install apps from Google Play or Galaxy Store, and update your phone. Built-in protection reduces risk; it does not make a phone immune to harmful apps or scams.

What does “virus protection” mean on a Galaxy phone?

People often use “virus” to describe a range of threats: malicious apps, spyware, unwanted software, phishing attempts, and deceptive downloads. On Android, Google refers to malicious apps as potentially harmful applications. Scanning apps matters, but it cannot prevent every risk, especially when a user is tricked into sharing information or installing something from an untrusted source.

Google describes Play Protect as built-in Android malware defense: it automatically scans apps on Android phones and works to prevent harmful-app installation. That is Google’s description of its own service, not a guarantee that every threat will be detected. Samsung also warns that deceptive ads and emails can try to download harmful software. Google Play Protect documentation and Samsung’s malware guidance explain these protections and risks.

What protection is already built into Samsung phones?

Google Play Protect

Play Protect is built into Android and scans apps, including apps downloaded outside Google Play. Google recommends keeping it enabled. Samsung’s US guidance says antivirus apps are not pre-installed on Galaxy phones and tablets, and that Samsung does not recommend third-party anti-malware products. Google’s documentation describes Play Protect; Samsung’s consumer guidance describes its position on separate antivirus apps.

Samsung security and privacy controls

Galaxy’s Security and privacy dashboard can manage Samsung App protection and Google Play Protect, and shows information about device and Google Play system updates. Exact controls depend on the device and software version. See Samsung Knox’s dashboard documentation for the features it describes.

Auto Blocker on supported devices

Samsung Knox documentation, last updated March 7, 2025, says Auto Blocker is available on Galaxy devices running One UI 6.0 (Android 14) or later and is enabled by default. It can block apps from unauthorized sources, commands over USB, unauthorized software updates over USB, and malicious payloads disguised as images in messaging apps. Its optional Maximum restrictions setting also turns on App protection, but Samsung warns that this may affect app usability. The specific antivirus solution used for App protection can vary by region. Details are in Samsung Knox’s Auto Blocker documentation.

Do not assume every Galaxy phone has the same controls or menu layout. Samsung says screens and settings may differ by carrier, software version, and model; regional feature availability can differ as well.

Is built-in protection enough, or should you install another app?

For a typical user who installs apps through official stores and keeps the phone updated, Samsung’s US guidance supports relying on built-in protections rather than adding a third-party anti-malware app. Samsung explicitly says it does not recommend third-party anti-malware products. A separate app is not established as necessary for ordinary malware scanning.

That guidance is regional: Samsung’s US page is clear, while Samsung material in other markets may emphasize partner products differently. Do not assume a named antivirus partner is included, recommended, or available on every Galaxy model or in every country. If you are considering a separate security app for a feature beyond malware scanning, such as identity monitoring, verify that feature, its permissions, and its privacy terms directly before installing it. The available Samsung and Google guidance does not establish that a paid app is necessary or effective on every model.

How to reduce malware risk on a Samsung phone

  1. Leave Play Protect on. Open the Google Play Store, tap your profile icon, then go to Play Protect and check that scanning is enabled. Google recommends keeping the protection on; labels may vary with software version.
  2. Install apps from trusted stores. Prefer Google Play or Galaxy Store. Avoid untrusted APK sites, links, and unsolicited prompts to download an app. Samsung advises against installing apps from outside those stores.
  3. Install available updates. Check Settings for software and security updates, and install updates offered for your device. Samsung’s dashboard also surfaces device and Google Play system update information.
  4. Review app permissions. In Settings, review app permissions and deny access an app does not reasonably need. Be cautious if a simple app asks for sensitive access unrelated to its purpose.
  5. Check Galaxy security controls. Look under Settings for Security and privacy or App security to see which protections your model offers. On supported devices, confirm Auto Blocker is enabled; its Maximum restrictions option can limit some functions.
  6. Ignore alarming browser pop-ups. A page claiming that your phone is infected is not proof of infection. Do not install software from an unsolicited pop-up; close the page and use your phone’s built-in settings or trusted app store instead.

Samsung notes that menus and settings differ across models, carriers, and software versions, so a particular path may not match every phone. Its guidance for protecting a Galaxy device provides further context.

What to do if you suspect a malicious app

If an unfamiliar app appeared after a download, or you notice suspicious behavior, remove the app rather than installing a scanner promoted by a pop-up. Samsung describes using Safe mode to disable third-party apps, then uninstalling a suspected app through Settings > Apps. The precise Safe mode steps can vary by device; follow the instructions for your model in Samsung’s Safe mode guidance.

  1. Restart the phone in Safe mode so third-party apps are disabled.
  2. Open Settings > Apps and select the app you suspect.
  3. Tap Uninstall, then restart the phone normally.
  4. Install available system updates and review Play Protect and the permissions of remaining apps.

What Google’s scanning figures do—and do not—tell you

Google reported that Play Protect scanned over 350 billion Android apps daily and identified more than 27 million new malicious apps from outside Google Play through real-time scanning during 2025. These are service-scale figures reported by Google in 2026, not an independent estimate of one user’s infection risk and not proof that every threat is caught. See Google’s 2025 ecosystem safety report.
