Yes—most regular iPhone apps should launch and remain usable on Apple’s documented iPhone Duo, but “usable” does not always mean fully optimized for every screen and folding position. Apps built with standard system components, Auto Layout or SwiftUI, size classes, safe-area handling, and resizable views should reflow as the available space changes. Apps designed around a fixed width, fixed orientation, fixed aspect ratio, or display-specific assumptions may instead run in a constrained window, leave unused space, restart during a transition, or place controls awkwardly.
The key distinction is between compatibility and foldable-quality adaptation. A normal app is expected to open; its behavior while moving between the outer and inner displays depends on how the app’s interface and media code respond to changing size, orientation, posture, and window shape.
What “works properly” means on a foldable iPhone
There are several different outcomes that users often describe as an app “working.” An app can launch successfully yet still provide a poor large-screen experience. It may display the same phone layout on a wider panel, show borders around content, reload after the device opens, or have a camera preview that no longer matches the visible frame.
- Basic compatibility: The app opens, accepts input, and performs its main task.
- Responsive layout: Controls, text, lists, and images rearrange when the available width or height changes.
- Continuity: The app preserves its state when you move from the outer display to the inner display or fold the device closed.
- Posture awareness: Important content avoids the hinge area and remains usable when the phone is partly folded.
- Media correctness: Camera previews, video, and full-screen interfaces retain the intended aspect ratio and orientation.
Apple’s iPhone Duo guidance says that an app using standard system components and designed to support resizing can adapt to the device’s poses with little adjustment. That guidance describes an adaptive approach rather than a promise that every existing app has already been tested on every pose.

How adaptive apps use the outer and inner displays
Standard components do much of the layout work
Apps that rely on the platform’s standard navigation bars, lists, forms, text views, buttons, and containers generally have a stronger foundation for a foldable display. These components are designed to respond to changes in the window rather than assuming one permanent rectangle.
When the available space becomes wider, an adaptive interface can increase spacing, reveal additional information, or move from a single-column arrangement to a split view. When space becomes narrower, it can stack those elements again. The app does not need a separate hand-built screen for every physical pose if its constraints and containers describe the relationships between elements correctly.
Size classes describe changing space
Apple specifically recommends size classes instead of creating a custom layout for each pose. Size classes let an app respond to the amount of usable space, so the same interface can choose a compact arrangement on the outer display and a more expansive arrangement on the inner display.

The usable width can change when the phone opens, closes, rotates, or enters a partially folded position. An app that treats those changes as normal layout events is less likely to clip text or push controls off-screen.
SwiftUI, Auto Layout, safe areas, and resizable views
SwiftUI and Auto Layout can support this behavior when developers use flexible constraints rather than hard-coded coordinates. Resizable views allow content to consume the space that is actually available. Safe-area insets keep buttons and text away from display edges or areas reserved for system elements.

These technologies do not automatically repair every design. A developer can still use a fixed frame, force one orientation, or embed an image with a rigid aspect ratio. The advantage is that adaptive frameworks make it possible to express a layout that changes naturally instead of requiring a separate screen for each display.
Expanded layouts are more than enlarged phone layouts
An inner display can offer room for a sidebar, a list beside a detail view, a document beside its tools, or a wider editing canvas. An app that simply scales up its phone layout may technically fill the screen while leaving large empty margins and making controls difficult to reach. Proper large-screen support uses the extra width intentionally rather than treating it as decorative space.

Apps with rigid assumptions are the most likely to look imperfect. The exact treatment depends on the operating system and the app’s declared capabilities, but the following outcomes are the practical possibilities described for foldable compatibility.

Android’s official compatibility documentation uses the term letterboxing for an app with a fixed orientation or aspect ratio that runs in a window it does not directly support. That example illustrates the general compatibility trade-off: preserving the app’s intended proportions can be preferable to distorting it, but it does not create a native foldable layout.
What happens when you open or close the phone
Continuity is a separate feature
An app can support resizing and still fail to preserve its exact state during a fold transition. Continuity means that the app remains at the same point—with the same document, scroll position, account state, or playback position—when the active display changes. Whether that happens depends on the app’s state-management code and the platform transition it receives.

Support documentation for foldable devices warns that compatibility with partially folded modes varies by app and that some apps may not fully support app continuity. On a well-adapted app, the transition feels like a single session moving to a different surface. On a constrained app, you may see a brief rebuild, a return to an earlier screen, or a layout that remains in its previous orientation.
State preservation matters more than animation
A smooth visual animation is not enough if the app loses your place. Apps that keep navigation state, form data, and media position in a restorable model are better prepared for a display change. If an app does not preserve that state, avoid assuming that closing or opening the device is harmless while entering text, editing a document, or completing a transaction.
Rotation and posture can trigger more than one change
Opening the device can change width, height, orientation, safe-area insets, and the position of the hinge at the same time. An app that handles only one of those changes may still produce a poor result. For example, it may resize correctly in portrait but fail when the device is opened in landscape, or it may reflow its controls while leaving a media preview in the old orientation.
Will apps be optimized for the larger inner screen?
There is no ecosystem-wide percentage showing how many ordinary iPhone apps will be fully optimized. The reliable expectation is conditional: apps already designed for multiple window sizes should adapt more successfully, while fixed or older designs may receive a compatibility treatment rather than a purpose-built inner-screen interface.
Signs of a genuinely expanded layout
- A list and its selected detail appear side by side when there is room.
- Toolbars move into a wider arrangement instead of leaving a large blank margin.
- Text columns gain readable width without becoming excessively long or stretched.
- Touch targets remain reachable and do not sit beneath the hinge or a folded seam.
- Navigation remains consistent when moving between compact and expanded arrangements.
Signs that the app is only being stretched or contained
- The phone-sized interface stays centered with broad empty areas around it.
- The app remains locked to portrait even when the available window is wider.
- Controls are enlarged without rearranging, making the interface feel sparse or difficult to scan.
- The app appears inside a bordered region rather than using the full display.
- Opening the device causes a visible reload or returns you to a different screen.
Camera and media apps need extra scrutiny
Camera previews can be misaligned
Camera software has to reconcile three different measurements: the device’s physical rotation, the camera sensor’s rotation, and the aspect ratio of the current window. Foldable compatibility guidance warns that ignoring those relationships can produce a preview that is rotated incorrectly, stretched, cropped unexpectedly, or offset from the controls.

This is why a camera app can look fine on the outer display yet fail after unfolding. The preview layer may still be sized for the previous window, while the capture controls have moved to the new one. A correct implementation recalculates the preview and control layout whenever the display configuration changes.
Video and full-screen playback can expose similar problems
Video players must decide whether to preserve the original aspect ratio, crop to fill, or show borders. A foldable adds another variable: the window may become wider without matching the video’s shape. Full-screen controls also need to move away from the hinge and remain reachable in both orientations.
For users, the practical test is simple: play a video, rotate the device, open and close it, and enter and leave full-screen mode. Check whether the picture remains correctly proportioned and whether controls stay visible.

- Apps whose content and navigation state are stored separately from a particular screen size.
More likely to need compatibility treatment
- Games or utilities that require one exact aspect ratio or orientation.
- Interfaces positioned with fixed coordinates instead of constraints.
- Camera, augmented-reality, or video tools that assume a single sensor and window relationship.
- Apps that were designed only for a narrow phone layout and have not been updated for changing windows.
These are tendencies, not guarantees. A game can adapt beautifully, and a simple utility can still be locked to a single orientation. The app’s implementation determines the result.

How to check an app before relying on it
- Open it on the outer display. Confirm that the main controls, text, and navigation are usable before changing the device’s posture.
- Open the phone while the app is active. Watch for a reload, a return to the home screen, or a loss of unsaved information.
- Inspect the expanded layout. Look for reflowed controls, a useful second column, and readable spacing rather than a centered phone-sized window.
- Rotate in both displays. Check portrait and landscape if the app’s purpose requires both.
- Test the hinge area. In a partially folded position, make sure important buttons, text, and playback controls are not hidden under the fold.
- Exercise media features. Take a photo, preview the camera, play a video, and enter full-screen mode if those functions matter to you.
- Repeat with real work. Enter text, scroll a long document, switch sections, and return to the app after changing posture to verify that state is retained.
Common problems and what they indicate

For developers, foldable support is primarily a responsive-layout and state-management problem, not a requirement to draw a unique screen for every hinge angle. The implementation should:
- Use standard system components where they fit the product.
- Define flexible constraints with SwiftUI or Auto Layout instead of fixed coordinates.
- Use size classes to switch between compact and expanded arrangements.
- Respect safe-area insets and keep essential controls away from the hinge or folded region.
- Support the display sizes, orientations, window sizes, and multitasking states the platform can present.
- Preserve navigation, form, document, and playback state across configuration changes.
- Recalculate camera preview geometry from device rotation, sensor rotation, and current window aspect ratio.
- Test outer, inner, portrait, landscape, flat-open, and partially folded states.
Supporting several poses does not require a custom layout for each one. A well-designed adaptive hierarchy can select an appropriate arrangement from the available size while keeping the same underlying content and state.
What users should and should not assume
You should assume that a normal iPhone app will probably open, but you should not assume that every app will fill the inner display elegantly, preserve state during every transition, support the hinge, or handle camera and video geometry correctly. Compatibility is strongest when an app already treats size and orientation as variables rather than constants.

No authoritative source establishes a single percentage for the entire iPhone app ecosystem. The most accurate answer remains conditional: adaptive apps should behave well across the displays; constrained apps may still run, but with borders, unused space, a smaller window, a restart, or controls that fit poorly.
The practical standard for a foldable iPhone app
A regular app works properly on a foldable screen when it does more than launch: it reflows to the available space, preserves state as the device opens or closes, keeps controls clear of the hinge, and maintains correct orientation for camera and media features. Apps built on responsive system components are positioned to meet that standard. Apps built around fixed dimensions may remain usable, but their experience is best treated as compatibility mode rather than full foldable optimization.
