QLED TVs generally do not develop the OLED-style permanent burn-in associated with uneven pixel aging. QLED is an LCD television design with a quantum-dot enhancement layer, so it does not age in the same pixel-by-pixel way as a self-emissive OLED panel. That makes QLED the safer choice for a screen that regularly shows a news ticker, sports scoreboard, game HUD or computer interface. However, QLED is not immune to every display problem: temporary image retention, changes in uniformity and component aging can still occur in unusual conditions.

What “burn-in” actually means

Burn-in is a persistent image defect. A logo, menu bar or other high-contrast shape remains visible because some parts of the display have aged differently from others. Changing the channel or turning the television off does not remove a genuinely burned-in pattern.

Permanent burn-in

Permanent burn-in is caused by uneven long-term wear. On an OLED television, each pixel produces its own light. Pixels that spend much of their life displaying bright, static elements can age faster than surrounding pixels, eventually leaving a lasting outline or color shift.

Temporary image retention

Image retention is different. A faint afterimage may appear after a bright, static picture has been displayed, then fade when you switch content, let the panel rest or run the model’s maintenance routine. Retention can be distracting, but it is not automatically evidence of irreversible burn-in.

Uniformity and component aging

LCD-based televisions can still develop changes in uniformity, backlight behavior or the quantum-dot layer over time. These issues may look like patches, bands or a residual shape on a test pattern. They are display-aging problems, not proof that a QLED panel has acquired classic OLED burn-in.

Why QLED is less vulnerable than OLED

How a QLED panel works

QLED is an LCD television with a quantum-dot enhancement layer. The LCD structure controls the picture while the backlight supplies the illumination; quantum dots help shape the color produced by that light. Because the image is not generated by millions of individually aging OLED emitters, a static logo does not normally wear a specific set of QLED pixels into a permanent pattern.

How OLED differs

OLED pixels emit their own light and can age unevenly when the same bright elements remain on screen for long periods. RTINGS’ comparison of QD-OLED and QLED states that OLED panels eventually experience burn-in under prolonged static exposure, while QLED televisions do not experience burn-in in that same way. The comparison also cautions that QLEDs are not immune to every display issue because their quantum dots have a limited lifespan and can degrade.

Samsung’s Canadian support guidance is more categorical: “Fortunately, Samsung QLED TVs are not susceptible to screen burn-in at all.” Read that statement as a description of the normal burn-in mechanism, not a promise that a QLED set can never show retention, a defect or age-related uniformity change.

What long-duration testing found

RTINGS’ longevity update, published October 6, 2026, covered 555 televisions. Most sets had accumulated more than 10,000 hours during a test lasting nearly three years. The test was designed to accelerate wear, so its results show what can happen under sustained stress rather than the failure rate an ordinary household should expect.

More than a dozen LCD televisions showed signs of image retention when examined on a 5% gray slide. The affected group included the 2021 TCL 6 Series/R646 QLED and Samsung Q60B QLED. This is important evidence against the idea that every LCD or QLED panel is physically incapable of retaining an image, but it does not turn those observations into a normal-use burn-in percentage. A gray test slide is deliberately good at exposing subtle non-uniformity that may be invisible during regular viewing.

When QLED is the safer choice

A channel that stays on all day

If a household leaves one news channel running for many hours, the channel logo, ticker and studio graphics remain in the same positions. QLED removes the main concern about permanent OLED burn-in in this scenario. You should still use the television’s sleep timer or screen-saving features when nobody is watching.

Sports with a fixed scoreboard

Sports broadcasts often keep a score, clock or network logo in one corner for an entire match. Occasional viewing is not the same as years of uninterrupted exposure, but a QLED gives more margin for a home that watches long events every day.

Gaming with a persistent HUD

A QLED can be used as a gaming monitor, particularly when the same health bar, mini-map or control panel appears for extended sessions. Vary games and content, avoid leaving a paused screen displayed for hours and enable automatic sleep. These habits reduce retention risk even though QLED’s permanent-burn-in risk is much lower than OLED’s.

Desktop and productivity use

Computer interfaces are unusually static: taskbars, browser controls and application toolbars can remain fixed for an entire workday. QLED is the more conservative choice if the television will function as a monitor for long, repetitive sessions. Set the operating system to blank the display, and do not leave a desktop or login screen visible overnight.

Mostly varied television and film viewing

Viewers who change channels, watch films, stream different programs and turn the set off between sessions place less sustained stress on any one area. RTINGS notes that many OLED owners can avoid burn-in with varied use, so the decision is not a universal ban on OLED. Your viewing pattern matters more than the label alone.

QLED versus OLED for burn-in concerns

Factor QLED OLED What it means for an owner
Permanent burn-in under static content Does not normally suffer the OLED-style burn-in mechanism; rare accelerated-test retention has been observed. Can develop permanent uneven aging after prolonged static exposure. Choose QLED when the same logos, HUDs or desktop elements remain visible for long periods.
Temporary retention and long-term uniformity Not immune to retention or uniformity changes; more than a dozen LCD sets showed retention in RTINGS’ accelerated test. Can show temporary retention and, with enough uneven aging, permanent burn-in. A faint afterimage is not automatically permanent damage on either technology.
Viewing pattern and brightness Well suited to repetitive, high-hours use such as news, sports or PC work. Varied viewing reduces risk, but repetitive static content increases concern. Match the panel to how you actually watch rather than to a blanket technology preference.
Contrast and black-level behavior Uses an LCD structure with a backlight and quantum-dot layer. Pixels emit their own light and can be turned down individually. OLED’s self-emissive design is the reason for its burn-in mechanism; QLED’s LCD design is the reason it avoids that mechanism.

How to reduce image-retention risk on a QLED TV

  1. Mix up the content. Change channels, games and apps instead of displaying one static interface for an entire day.
  2. Use automatic sleep. Turn on the television’s sleep timer, auto-power-off or screen-saver setting. Menu names differ by model, so use the settings search or the owner’s manual.
  3. Blank a connected computer. Configure the computer to turn off the display after inactivity and hide static taskbars when practical.
  4. Do not leave paused video on screen. Pause menus, streaming app screens and game HUDs can remain unchanged for hours while nobody is watching.
  5. Follow the model’s maintenance instructions. If the television offers a panel-care, pixel-refresh or image-cleaning routine, run it only as the manufacturer directs. Do not repeatedly invoke a maintenance cycle without a reason.
  6. Keep ventilation clear. Excess heat can accelerate electronics aging. Leave the clearance specified by the manufacturer around the set and do not block its vents.
  7. Use normal picture settings. Extremely bright, high-contrast settings increase stress on the display. A comfortable, moderate setting is sensible for long sessions.

These steps lower the chance of retention and unnecessary wear. They cannot guarantee that a particular panel will never develop a defect or a uniformity change.

What to do if you see a logo or afterimage

  1. Identify whether it follows the panel. Switch to a different input and display varied full-screen content. If the shape appears only inside one app or source, the source may be generating it.
  2. Let the set rest. Turn the television off normally and leave it off for a while. Temporary retention may fade after the panel cools and rests.
  3. Check with a neutral test picture. A plain gray or solid-color image can reveal whether the mark is still present, but do not mistake a test-pattern artifact for a defect visible during normal viewing.
  4. Run only the approved maintenance function. Use the exact panel-care procedure in the model’s manual. Do not unplug the set during a maintenance cycle.
  5. Document a persistent defect. Photograph the mark on a neutral screen, note the input and operating conditions, and contact the manufacturer or retailer if it remains after content changes and a rest period.

A mark that disappears is consistent with temporary retention. A pattern that remains across inputs and normal viewing is more serious and may require service, even if it is not technically OLED-style burn-in.

A practical buying decision

Choose QLED when static content is unavoidable

QLED is the conservative option for a family room that runs a single channel most of the day, a gaming setup with long sessions, or a work area where the television doubles as a monitor. Its lower susceptibility to permanent burn-in addresses the main risk created by those routines.

Consider OLED when your use is varied

OLED remains a reasonable choice for viewers who watch changing films, shows and games, use automatic screen-off features and do not leave fixed graphics displayed for long periods. The possibility of burn-in is use-dependent, not an automatic outcome for every OLED owner.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Check the exact warranty

Panel coverage, exclusions for image retention and regional service terms are model-specific. Read the warranty before purchase, especially if the television will be used commercially, as a monitor or for unusually long daily hours. No universal price or warranty comparison can be made without a specific model and market.

Bottom line

QLED televisions generally do not suffer from OLED-style permanent burn-in, which makes them the safer display for persistent logos, news tickers, sports scoreboards, game HUDs and computer desktops. They can still show temporary retention or other aging-related uniformity problems in edge cases, including the accelerated conditions documented by RTINGS. Vary content, enable automatic sleep and follow the model’s care instructions; if a mark persists across inputs and normal viewing, treat it as a service issue rather than assuming every QLED panel is immune to damage.
