Short answer: a PS5 does not play PS2 discs, and there is no console-wide PS2 feature set for trophies, save states, or rewind. A PS2-origin game can appear on PS5 as a specific downloadable PS4/PS5 release or as a streamed title in the PlayStation Plus Classics Catalog. Trophies, Sony’s “quick save” function, and rewind are controlled by that individual release. Check the exact Store or catalog listing before assuming any feature is included.
Can a PS5 play PS2 discs?
No. Sony’s PS5 compatibility guidance says the console supports PS5 games and more than 99% of PS4 games, but it does not play original PlayStation, PS2, or PS3 discs. Putting a PS2 disc in the drive will not install or launch the game. This is a hardware and software compatibility limit, not a setting that can be enabled with an update.

That means a PS2 game appearing in the PS5 interface is not evidence of PS2-disc backward compatibility. It is a separate release distributed by download or streaming. You need to identify that release rather than relying on the title of the original disc.
How PS2-origin games reach a PS5
Downloadable releases
Some games that began on PS2 were later issued as digital versions for PS4 and PS5, or as remastered or remade editions. You download the current release from the PlayStation Store and play it as a supported PS4 or PS5 game. Its menus, trophy list, save system and enhancements belong to that release; they are not automatically inherited from the PS2 disc.

A downloadable version normally stores its save data on the console. If you delete the game, the save can remain in console storage, but deleting saved data separately removes it. Back up important progress before changing versions or resetting the console.
Streamed Classics Catalog versions
In markets where the required PlayStation Plus Premium benefit is offered, some original PS2 games can be streamed from the Classics Catalog. Sony’s service guide describes PS2 streaming as available only in select markets, with availability varying by title. Streaming is therefore dependent on your country, membership plan, account, network connection and the title’s current catalog status.
The current Classics Catalog support page tells PS5 owners to browse eligible games on the console. Catalog contents and regional rights can change, so an old list, a video or a search result is not proof that a particular game is available to you today. Open the live catalog or Store listing while signed in to the account and region you will use for play.

Do PS2 games on PS5 have trophies?
Sometimes, but there is no blanket PS2 trophy policy. Sony’s May 23, 2022 PlayStation.Blog guide says that some original PlayStation and PSP titles may offer trophies
and that the feature is optional for developers. The examples named there include Ape Escape, Hot Shots Golf, IQ Intelligent Qube and Syphon Filter. That statement concerns original PlayStation and PSP titles; it does not establish that PS2-origin releases receive trophies automatically.
For a PS2 game, treat the trophy list as a property of the specific modern release. A remaster, remake, downloadable classic and streamed catalog version can have different metadata, or one version can have no trophies at all. The official pages available for this subject do not provide a complete, permanent list of every PS2-origin PS5 release with trophies.
How to check before buying or subscribing
- Search the game’s exact name in the PlayStation Store on your PS5, not just the original PS2 title in a web search.
- Open the edition that says it is playable on PS5, or open the matching Classics Catalog entry if you plan to stream it.
- Look for a trophy section or trophy-list indicator on that release’s page. If none is shown, do not promise yourself a trophy set.
- Check the region and edition. A listing in another country may represent different availability or a different product.
Do not infer trophy support from a review of the original PS2 disc, from another platform’s achievements, or from a different remaster.
Are “save states” available, or only quick save?
Sony generally calls the feature quick save, not “save states.” Its May 16, 2022 classic-games announcement describes menus that let players save at any time for select original PlayStation and PSP classics. In the PS2-origin examples covered by Sony, Indiana Jones and the Staff of Kings and Wild Arms 4 are specifically listed with quick save.

Unless the title’s own documentation describes multiple slots, assume only the save behavior shown in that release’s menus. A game may still retain its original checkpoints or save points in addition to any modern quick-save function.
What to do when quick save is missing
- Confirm that you launched the modern PS4/PS5 or Classics Catalog release, rather than expecting the PS2 disc to gain new menus.
- Pause the game and inspect its supplied menu for a quick-save command. Some releases expose enhancements through an overlay rather than the original pause screen.
- Check the title’s current Store description or official announcement. If quick save is not documented, treat it as unavailable rather than a hidden universal feature.
Can you rewind PS2 games on PS5?
Rewind is also title-specific. Sony identifies rewind for Indiana Jones and the Staff of Kings and Wild Arms 4, but the announcement does not say that every PS2-origin game has it. A game that lacks a rewind command cannot be given that ability by changing the PS5’s global settings.
When a release supports rewind, use the control shown in its classic-game overlay or pause menu. Rewind is a convenience feature for correcting a recent mistake; it is separate from saving progress and does not change whether the game awards trophies.
Where do saves go when you download or stream?
Sony separates save storage for downloaded and streamed PlayStation Plus games. A downloaded game writes saves to PS5 or PS4 console storage. A streamed game writes saves to PlayStation’s streaming storage. Progress does not automatically become available in the other format simply because both versions have the same game name.

The practical sequence is:
- Finish playing and allow the current version to synchronize its save with cloud storage, following the save-data controls provided for your account.
- Launch the other version and open the PS5 saved-data settings for PS5/PS4 games.
- Use the cloud-storage options to download the compatible save to console storage, or select the corresponding cloud-transfer command shown for the streamed title.
- Start the game and verify that the expected profile and progress load before deleting the original copy.
Menu labels can vary with system software and the game’s delivery method. Keep both versions until you have confirmed the transfer; a save created by one edition may not be recognized by a different remaster or remake even when the title is similar.

How to verify a specific game in a few minutes
- Identify the product. Write down the exact edition name, platform labels and whether the listing says download or stream.
- Check your region. Sign in on the PS5 account that will play the game and open the local Store or Classics Catalog. Do not rely on another country’s listing.
- Confirm membership. For streaming, verify that your current PlayStation Plus plan includes the required Premium catalog benefit in your market.
- Inspect trophies. Open the release details and look for its trophy information. Absence of a trophy list is a reason to withhold a trophy claim.
- Inspect enhancements. Read the feature description and check the in-game overlay after launch for quick save or rewind. Only documented features should be treated as supported.
- Plan saves. Decide whether you will stream or download first. If you expect to change route, enable cloud storage and keep the original save until the new version loads it successfully.
Common problems and what they mean
The PS2 disc is rejected
This is expected behavior, not a damaged disc diagnosis. PS5 does not read original PS2 game discs. Find a supported digital release or a catalog entry instead.
The game appears in a video but not in your catalog
Catalog rights are regional and can change over time. Check the live catalog while signed in, confirm the membership tier and look for a downloadable Store edition. A title’s past availability does not guarantee current access.

The original PS2 version may never have had trophies, and the modern edition may omit them. Verify the exact release page rather than assuming that every classic game has a list.
Your streamed save is missing in the download
The two delivery methods use different save locations. Use the PlayStation Plus cloud-transfer controls, then launch the compatible edition and verify the save before removing anything.
There is no rewind or quick-save command
Those features are optional enhancements, not PS5-wide controls. If the title’s official information does not list them, play with the game’s original saving rules.
Bottom line for buying and playing
Think of every PS2 game on PS5 as a modern, title-specific product. The PS2 disc itself will not work. A downloadable or streamed release may add trophies, quick save and rewind, but Sony documents those features only for selected games, not as a standard package. Confirm the exact edition, your regional availability and the current membership requirement, then check its trophy and feature information before you commit. Keep in mind that downloaded saves live on the console while streamed saves live in PlayStation’s streaming storage, so changing formats can require a cloud-storage transfer.
