Yes, many PS1-style survival-horror games work on Steam Deck with its built-in controls or an external gamepad, but support is decided per title. A native Steam release with Valve’s Deck Verified label is normally the easiest option. A title marked Playable can also be a good experience, although it may need a community control layout, touchscreen input or a launcher workaround. Windows builds can run through Proton, while original PlayStation software runs through an emulator such as DuckStation or RetroArch when you provide legally created game files and your own BIOS dump.

There is no blanket “PS1-style horror” compatibility guarantee. Check the current rating and test the exact version you intend to play, because labels and Proton behavior can change with SteamOS, Proton and game updates.

What “PS1-style” means for Steam Deck compatibility

“PS1-style” describes a visual and design approach—low-polygon graphics, fixed camera angles, pre-rendered backgrounds, tank controls, limited inventories and deliberate survival-horror pacing—not a single technical platform. A modern game inspired by the original PlayStation may have a native Linux/Steam build, a Windows executable, or no Steam release at all. An original PlayStation game is different again: it needs emulation and legally obtained game data.

That distinction determines whether Steam’s compatibility badge applies. The Deck rating belongs to a specific Steam product and its current build; it does not certify every game with retro graphics, every version sold elsewhere, or every emulated title.

How Valve’s Deck Verified labels apply

Valve uses four categories: Verified, Playable, Unsupported and Unknown. The program is a title-by-title review rather than a genre-wide promise.

Verified

Valve defines Verified as: “The game works great on Steam Deck, right out of the box.” Its criteria include full controller support, correct controller-button icons, support for the Deck’s default resolution, no compatibility warnings and Proton support when the game is a Windows build. For a fixed-camera horror game, that generally means you can install it, launch it and play with the built-in controls without first configuring a mouse and keyboard.

Playable

Playable means the game works but may require manual adjustment. Typical examples include choosing a community controller layout, using the touchscreen to operate a launcher, opening an on-screen keyboard, or changing a display option. Playable is not a performance score and does not mean the game is unsuitable; it signals that the first launch may not be completely automatic.

Unsupported and Unknown

Unsupported indicates that Valve’s current testing found a blocking issue or a major incompatibility. Unknown means the title has not received a useful compatibility determination. Either label can change after a game, Proton or SteamOS update, so check the current store or library entry immediately before installation.

Three ways to play the genre on a Deck

Route What you install Controller handling Main source of setup work
Native Steam release The game from Steam Deck controls are presented to the game as a controller; an external pad can be used through Steam Input Usually lowest friction when the title is Verified; Playable titles may need a layout or launcher workaround
Windows or non-Steam build through Proton The program added to Steam as a non-Steam game, plus a compatible Proton tool Steam Input and the game’s own bindings Choosing Proton, fixing launchers, display settings, save paths or mappings
Original PlayStation software through emulation DuckStation or RetroArch, a legally created game image and your own BIOS dump Steam Input and/or the emulator’s controller configuration Supplying legal files, selecting the BIOS, mapping controls and configuring video and saves

Only the first route receives a Steam Deck rating. Proton and emulator setups depend on your files and configuration, so a Verified badge for a modern remake says nothing about an original disc image you run separately.

Can you use the Deck’s built-in controls?

Yes. Steam treats the Deck’s buttons, sticks, triggers, D-pad and trackpads as controller inputs. A Verified title is expected to provide full controller access and appropriate button prompts. This is particularly useful for tank-control games, where a physical D-pad and stick are more predictable than touch controls.

A Playable result may still work well with the built-in controls, but you might need to select a community layout in the game’s controller settings. If a launcher accepts only mouse input, use the right trackpad, touchscreen or an on-screen keyboard during setup, then return to the gamepad layout once the game starts.

When an external controller helps

For docked play, a wired or Bluetooth gamepad can be easier than navigating with a trackpad or touchscreen. Valve’s Steam Deck FAQ recommends PlayStation 4 and PlayStation 5 controllers and notes that any controller can be used to get started. A DualShock 4 or DualSense therefore provides a supported option for both native games and emulators.

This ensures stable online play and rapid updates, making it the most reliable wireless gaming handheld for modern high-speed home networks.
  • 【Responsive Touch & Enhanced Connectivity】 Enjoy a vastly improved touchscreen with higher fidelity and faster haptics. We’ve added a dedicated Bluetooth antenna to improve connections for multiple controllers. Whether using the built-in trackpads or the included external controller, this allows for precision play in everything from FPS to complex strategy games.

External pads do not bypass a game’s own compatibility problems. If a launcher has no gamepad support, you may still need touch or mouse-style input. Steam Input can translate a controller to keyboard or mouse commands, but that mapping has to be selected or created for the specific title.

How to check a game before installing it

  1. Open the game’s Steam store page or your Library entry on the Deck.
  2. Read the current Deck label rather than relying on an old screenshot, review or forum post.
  3. Open the compatibility details to see whether the warning concerns a launcher, text readability, controller input or another issue.
  4. Confirm whether the title launches directly or opens a separate launcher. Menu-heavy games are more likely to need touchscreen or trackpad input even when gameplay is fully controller-driven.
  5. After installation, test the opening menu, a save, a load and any video or input options before committing to a long play session.

Compatibility review is ongoing. A label can change after a SteamOS, Proton or game update, and a community layout can also be replaced or revised. Treat the current Deck entry as the most relevant snapshot for a native Steam purchase.

Setting up a native Steam release

Verified title

  1. Install the game from Steam and start it from Gaming Mode.
  2. Use the default Deck layout first. Verified status is intended to provide full controller support without a preliminary mapping session.
  3. At the opening screen, confirm that button prompts match the controls you are pressing and that text is readable at the Deck’s default 1280×800 display.
  4. Create a test save, exit to the menu and load it. This catches unusual save-folder or permissions behavior before you make progress.

Playable title

  1. Read the specific warning shown in the compatibility details.
  2. If the game needs a community layout, open the controller settings from the game page, browse the community layouts and apply one that matches the game’s control scheme.
  3. Use the touchscreen or a trackpad for a launcher, installer or menu that does not accept gamepad input.
  4. Set the game’s resolution and scaling so text and fixed-camera scenes remain legible. The Deck’s default resolution is 1280×800; some games use 1280×720 instead.
  5. Test saving, loading and quitting before changing Proton or adding launch options. A simple layout adjustment is less disruptive than replacing the runtime.

Running a Windows or non-Steam build with Proton

Proton can expand the catalog beyond native Steam releases, but “Proton works” is not the same as Verified. Steam Support documents forcing a particular Proton tool from Properties > Compatibility.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Add the executable to Steam as a non-Steam game, then open its Properties.
  2. Choose Compatibility and enable the option to force a specific Proton tool.
  3. Try the Proton version recommended by the game’s current compatibility information. If it fails, test another installed version rather than changing several settings at once.
  4. Launch in Desktop Mode if the installer or launcher needs mouse input; return to Gaming Mode for normal play.
  5. Check display mode, aspect ratio and scaling. Older games may start in a small window or an unsupported resolution even when gameplay itself runs.
  6. Map missing buttons in Steam Input and verify that the game receives one input source consistently. Mixed keyboard-and-gamepad mappings can cause duplicate actions or menu focus problems.
  7. Locate the game’s save folder and make a backup before changing Proton prefixes or reinstalling. Proton can store saves in a prefix path rather than the location expected by a native build.

Common Proton friction points are launchers that require a cursor, video settings that default to an unreadable mode, incorrect save paths and prompts that show keyboard keys instead of controller icons. These are configuration issues, not evidence that every PS1-style game is incompatible.

Playing original PlayStation games through emulation

For original PlayStation software, use an emulator such as DuckStation or RetroArch and supply a game image you created from media you legally own, together with your own BIOS dump. The emulator route is governed by your files and settings, not by a Steam Deck rating. Do not download copyrighted game images or BIOS files from unauthorized sources.

  1. Install the emulator and add it to Steam if you want Gaming Mode access.
  2. In the emulator, select the BIOS dump from your own console and point the game library to your legally created image files.
  3. Configure the video backend and aspect ratio. Original 4:3 games may display with side borders on the Deck; stretching the image can make characters and rooms look distorted.
  4. Map the Deck controls or external pad in Steam Input and then confirm the same buttons inside the emulator. Decide whether the D-pad or left stick should control tank movement, and keep that choice consistent.
  5. Set a save location you can find and back up. Use the emulator’s memory-card emulation for normal in-game saves; treat save states as a convenience rather than your only copy.
  6. Test a new game, an in-game save and a reload before enabling enhancements such as texture filtering, widescreen hacks or frame-rate changes.

A PlayStation 5 or PlayStation 4 controller can be paired by Bluetooth or connected by USB and then mapped in Steam Input and the emulator. Pairing is separate from game compatibility: the pad may connect correctly while a particular emulator profile still needs button assignments.

Display, menus and save behavior to test

Readability at Deck resolutions

Valve’s Verified criteria include support for the Deck’s default resolution. That does not guarantee that every retro-styled font is comfortable to read. Check inventory text, map labels, subtitles and warning prompts at 1280×800, or at 1280×720 when the game selects that mode. Fixed-camera scenes can also hide interactable objects near the edge of the frame when scaling or aspect-ratio settings are changed.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Launcher and menu navigation

A game can be fully playable after launch yet still be marked Playable because its launcher expects a mouse. Keep the touchscreen and right trackpad available, and consider an external controller for docked sessions. Once the game reaches its own menu, switch back to a gamepad layout and check that prompts correspond to the active device.

Saves and portability

Native Steam saves may use Steam Cloud when the title supports it; a Proton prefix or emulator memory card follows different rules. Verify a save locally before assuming it will appear on another Deck or after reinstalling. Back up emulator memory-card files and Proton save folders manually when the game does not provide cloud synchronization.

A practical decision guide

  • Choose a native Verified release when you want the shortest setup and dependable built-in controls.
  • Choose a native Playable release when you accept one-time layout, touchscreen or launcher adjustments.
  • Use Proton when the game is a Windows or non-Steam build and you are comfortable selecting a runtime and troubleshooting saves or display settings.
  • Use DuckStation or RetroArch for original PlayStation software when you already have legally created images and a BIOS dump and want control over emulator settings.
  • Add a PS4 or PS5 controller for docked play, a familiar PlayStation layout or games whose built-in Deck mapping is awkward.

No authoritative genre-wide success rate or frame-rate figure establishes how many PS1-style horror games work. The reliable evidence is the individual Steam label, the game’s current build and the behavior of your chosen Proton or emulator configuration.
