Yes. Games in the PlayStation Plus Extra Game Catalog can be removed on a published end date. Downloading one installs the files on your console, but it does not turn the catalog license into a permanent purchase. You can play only while your account has an active plan that includes the game and the title is still offered. When the game leaves, the installed copy and catalog-linked add-ons stop working until you obtain a separate entitlement, such as buying the game.
What a PS Plus Extra download actually gives you
PS Plus Extra grants a subscription-based license to eligible games in the Game Catalog. The license is attached to your PlayStation account, not permanently to the console or to the downloaded files. Selecting Download copies the game to your PS5 or PS4 so you can play it locally, but the account still has to pass Sony’s entitlement checks whenever you start the game.
A title can therefore be present in your Game Library and installed on the drive without being yours in the purchase sense. The library entry is a convenient way to find the game; it does not change the catalog’s membership and availability conditions.

When can an Extra game leave?
Sony publishes end dates
Sony says that some Game Catalog and Classics Catalog games have end dates. Those dates are publicized ahead of removal, so a game can be available today while already carrying a scheduled departure date. The date applies to the service offering, not merely to new downloads: once the title reaches its end date, access through the catalog ends for members who already installed it.

There is no universal notice period
Sony’s published plan and FAQ pages do not establish one minimum notice period for every removal. Do not assume that every title will remain for a fixed number of weeks or months after its departure is announced. Check the end-date information shown for the specific game and treat that date as the boundary for catalog access.
What happens to a game you already downloaded?
Until the title’s end date, an eligible Extra member can launch the downloaded game under the same catalog license. After removal, the installed files remain on the storage device, but the license no longer authorizes play through PS Plus. In practical terms, the game behaves like an installed title for which the account no longer has a valid entitlement: it will not continue as a free, permanent copy simply because it was downloaded earlier.
The same rule applies if your membership expires before the game leaves. The game can stay installed, but launching it requires an active membership tier that includes the relevant catalog access. Re-subscribing can restore access when the title is still in the catalog. If the title has already left, re-subscribing to Extra does not by itself recreate a catalog listing that Sony has removed; purchasing the game is the dependable way to obtain an independent entitlement.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsHow to download an Extra game under the catalog license
- Use the account with the eligible plan. Sign in on the PS5 or PS4 account that holds the PlayStation Plus Extra membership. Essential does not include the Game Catalog.
- Open the Game Catalog. From the PlayStation Plus area, browse or search the catalog on your console.
- Select an eligible game. Confirm that the title is offered for your current plan rather than as a separate purchase or a Premium-only feature.
- Choose Download. Sony’s support instructions identify Download as the action that installs the catalog game on PS5 or PS4.
- Launch it from your library or the game screen. The title can appear in Game Library after you claim it, but that entry remains subject to the plan and catalog end date.
Downloading is useful for local play and avoids relying on a continuous stream, but it does not alter the duration of the license. A game downloaded on the final day before removal is governed by the same end date as a game downloaded months earlier.

What happens to DLC and add-ons?
DLC and add-ons purchased for a catalog game follow the underlying catalog entitlement. Sony states that they work while the downloaded game remains valid under the membership and catalog. If your membership expires, access to that catalog-linked DLC is lost along with the game. If the game leaves the service, its catalog-linked add-ons are also unavailable, even though you paid separately for the add-on.
Sony says access can return when you resubscribe or purchase the title. The practical distinction is important:
- If the membership expired and the game is still in the Game Catalog, resubscribing to an eligible plan can restore the game and its qualifying add-ons.
- If the game was removed, buying the base game creates the separate entitlement needed to use the DLC you already purchased, subject to the add-on being compatible with that edition and platform.
Buying DLC alone is therefore not a substitute for owning or otherwise retaining access to the base game. Keep the base-game status in mind before spending on catalog add-ons.
Which PlayStation Plus tiers include the Game Catalog?
| Plan | Catalog and play entitlement | Streaming |
|---|---|---|
| Essential | Monthly Games and core PlayStation Plus benefits; no Game Catalog access. | Not included as a tier benefit. |
| Extra | Essential benefits plus downloadable access to eligible Game Catalog titles. | Game Catalog access is download-based on this tier. |
| Premium | Extra benefits plus Classics Catalog, game trials, and other Premium features for eligible titles. | Cloud streaming for eligible titles. |
The catalog name matters. Extra is the plan that supplies the downloadable Game Catalog entitlement described here. Premium includes Extra’s benefits and adds access to the Classics Catalog and cloud streaming where Sony supports those features. Essential’s monthly games should not be confused with the larger Game Catalog: Essential does not grant the latter.

Download versus Premium cloud streaming
Downloading and streaming are different access paths. Extra members download eligible Game Catalog games to play locally. Cloud streaming is a Premium feature and is limited to eligible titles and supported service availability; it is not an Extra benefit.
Sony lists a 5 Mbps minimum broadband connection for streaming and 15 Mbps for 1080p streaming. Sony Interactive Entertainment and PlayStation list these requirements for 2026. They are service requirements, not a promise that every catalog title can be streamed or that a connection meeting the number will produce identical results. Title availability varies, and a game’s presence in the downloadable Game Catalog does not automatically establish streaming availability.
| Question | Extra download | Premium streaming |
|---|---|---|
| Where does the game run? | On the PS5 or PS4 after installation. | On Sony’s supported cloud service while streamed. |
| Minimum connection stated by Sony | No streaming bandwidth requirement applies to the local download itself. | 5 Mbps minimum; 15 Mbps for 1080p streaming. |
| Does it bypass catalog removal? | No. The installed license ends when the title leaves. | No. Streaming availability is also tied to the title and the Premium entitlement. |
Subscription access versus buying the game
A purchase and a catalog license solve different problems. The subscription is a way to play while the plan and catalog conditions remain valid. A purchase supplies a separate game entitlement that is not dependent on that title continuing in the Game Catalog, although normal platform, edition, and DLC compatibility rules still apply.

| Title reaches its published end date | Installed catalog copy stops working. | Purchased copy remains playable, and compatible DLC can be used. |
If you are close to finishing a long game, regularly use its add-ons, or want reliable access after a scheduled departure, buying the title is the option that removes the catalog end-date risk. The catalog can still be the lower-commitment way to sample or complete a game before its announced removal.

How to plan around a removal
Check the title’s status before starting
Look for an announced end date in the game’s catalog information and account for the time needed to finish it. Because Sony does not promise a single notice period for all titles, do not treat an unannounced date as a guarantee of long-term availability.
Separate the base game from add-ons
Record which content is included through the catalog and which DLC you bought separately. If the game is removed, the add-ons do not preserve access to the base game; they become usable again only when the base-game entitlement is valid.
Choose a recovery path
- Game still listed, membership lapsed: renew or resubscribe to a plan that includes the title.
- Game removed, but you want to keep playing: purchase the game, then reinstall or launch it under the purchased entitlement.
- Game removed and you do not need it: remove the unused installation to reclaim storage; deleting it does not change the entitlement either way.
Common misunderstandings and fixes
“It is in my library, so I own it.”
A library entry can represent a catalog claim rather than a purchase. Verify the plan and the title’s current catalog status before assuming permanent ownership.

“I downloaded it before the end date, so I can keep playing.”
The download date does not override the published removal date. Once the title leaves, the installed copy no longer has catalog authorization.

“I bought the DLC, so the game should remain playable.”
DLC does not replace the base-game entitlement. Catalog-linked add-ons follow the game’s access and can be unavailable when the membership expires or the game leaves.
“Premium means every catalog game can be streamed.”
Premium adds cloud streaming for eligible titles, not universal streaming for every Game Catalog game. Availability varies by title and service support, and the stated 5 Mbps and 15 Mbps figures are connection requirements rather than guarantees.
“Essential includes the same games as Extra.”
Essential includes Monthly Games and core benefits, but it does not include the Game Catalog. An Essential member must move to a plan with the relevant catalog entitlement or buy the game.

- Is the title in the Game Catalog or only available as a purchase?
- Does your account have Extra or Premium rather than Essential?
- Has Sony published an end date for this title?
- Are your DLC purchases tied to the catalog copy?
- Would a separate purchase be preferable before the end date?
- If you plan to stream, is the title eligible and is your connection at least 5 Mbps, or 15 Mbps for 1080p?
The bottom line for PS Plus Extra players
PS Plus Extra is a rotating, subscription-based Game Catalog, not an ownership plan. Downloaded games remain playable only while the account has the required active membership and Sony continues offering each title. A published end date can disable an installed game, and its catalog-linked DLC follows the same entitlement. Premium adds Classics Catalog access and eligible cloud streaming, while Essential has no Game Catalog access. For a game you want to keep independently of Sony’s catalog schedule, purchase the title rather than relying on the download alone.
