Yes—most plants need a predictable dark period every 24 hours. Leaving a grow light on continuously is not a sound default. For many foliage plants, lettuce, and herbs, start with 12–14 total hours of light and 10–12 hours of uninterrupted darkness. Count sunlight through windows and artificial light together, and generally keep illumination to 16 hours or less unless a crop-specific growing guide says otherwise.

Darkness is not wasted time. Plants use the length of the night to regulate development, including flowering. A programmable outlet timer makes the cycle repeatable, while the correct duration depends on whether you are growing seedlings, herbs, foliage plants, or a photoperiod-sensitive flowering species.

Why plants need a dark period

Plants do more than simply collect light. Their physiology tracks the daily light-and-dark cycle, and many processes depend on how long the night lasts. Iowa State Extension describes this response as photoperiodism: plants respond primarily to the length of darkness, not just the number of daylight hours. That is why a plant can receive an apparently generous amount of light yet still perform poorly if its night is repeatedly interrupted.

Most indoor plants therefore need a regular dark interval for normal development. Continuous 24-hour illumination removes the nightly signal and can create an unnecessarily stressful schedule. More light is not automatically better; intensity, distance from the fixture, spectrum, water, temperature, and the plant’s species all matter.

Short-day plants are really long-night plants

Some flowering plants initiate blooms when nights reach a sufficiently long, uninterrupted duration. Iowa State notes that “short-day plants” are more accurately called long-night plants: the trigger is a night longer than a critical duration, rather than a day that is unusually short. Poinsettia, kalanchoe, and Christmas cactus are examples of photoperiod-sensitive plants identified by University of Maryland Extension.

For these plants, a brief light exposure during the scheduled night can matter. A ceiling lamp, reading light, or streetlight shining through a window may “pollute” the dark period and prevent or delay flowering, even though the plant otherwise receives the correct number of hours under a grow light.

How many hours should a grow light be on?

The table below gives practical starting points from University of Minnesota Extension and other university guidance. “Total light” means window light plus grow-light exposure during the same 24-hour period. Treat these as starting schedules, then adjust for the species’ instructions and the plant’s response.

Plant group or goal Suggested total light per 24 hours Dark-period guidance
Seedlings 16–18 hours Provide at least about 6–8 hours of darkness; do not run the fixture continuously.
Lettuce and herbs 12–14 hours Allow about 10–12 hours of darkness.
Foliage houseplants 12–14 hours Allow about 10–12 hours of darkness.
Flowering houseplants 14–16 hours Follow the species’ photoperiod requirement and protect the night, especially for long-night plants.
General home-gardener starting point 12–14 hours, within a practical 10–16-hour range Use a timer-controlled, uninterrupted dark interval.

The often-recommended ceiling of about 16 hours applies to most plants. Seed-starting guidance can call for 16–18 hours of light, so seedlings are a crop-specific exception rather than a reason to expose every houseplant to 18 hours. If a seed packet or specialist care guide specifies a different photoperiod, use that information in preference to a generic schedule.

Can you leave a grow light on 24/7?

You can physically leave a fixture on, but 24/7 lighting should not be your default growing method. It eliminates the dark signal that most plants need and is especially risky when the plant is expected to flower in response to a long night. Continuous operation also makes it harder to diagnose whether a problem comes from excessive duration, excessive intensity, heat, or another care issue.

A better approach is to choose a daily target and reserve the remaining hours for darkness. For a foliage plant receiving 12 hours of light, for example, a cycle of 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. leaves a 12-hour night. The exact clock times are less important than repeating the same cycle each day and matching the species’ required day length.

How to set up a reliable grow-light schedule

  1. Measure the existing daylight. Estimate how many hours the plant receives useful window light. Count only the light that actually reaches the leaves; a dim room that is bright to your eyes may contribute little usable light.
  2. Choose a target from the plant group. Start with 12–14 total hours for most foliage plants, lettuce, and herbs. Use 16–18 hours for seedlings only when that schedule fits the seed-starting guidance. Flowering plants may need 14–16 hours during vegetative growth, while a long-night species needs a carefully protected night for bud initiation.
  3. Subtract window hours from the target. If a plant gets six hours of strong window light, add only enough artificial light to reach the target total. Adding 14 hours of grow light on top of those six hours would create 20 hours of illumination, beyond the usual general recommendation.
  4. Plug the fixture into a programmable outlet timer. Set automatic on and off times rather than relying on memory. A timer also keeps several fixtures synchronized when plants share a shelf.
  5. Check the first complete cycle. Confirm that the timer switches at the intended times, that the light does not turn back on through a secondary schedule, and that the fixture is not heating leaves or a flammable surface.
  6. Keep the schedule consistent. A morning-to-evening cycle is easy to live with, but any stable daily window can work. Consistency matters more than choosing a particular clock hour.

How sunlight changes the calculation

Artificial-light hours are not added blindly to daylight. The goal is a total daily exposure. A plant on a bright windowsill might need only a few supplemental hours, while one in a dim interior room may need nearly the full target from the fixture.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Window exposure varies with season, cloud cover, glass, curtains, and the direction of the window. Reassess when the plant moves or the season changes. If winter sunlight falls from six useful hours to two, increase supplemental lighting toward the plant’s target rather than assuming the old timer setting still provides enough light.

Do not confuse duration with intensity. A weak fixture running for 14 hours may still leave a plant stretched and pale, while a powerful fixture at close range can bleach or scorch leaves in a shorter period. Duration adjustments work best after the fixture’s distance and intensity are appropriate.

Does a little room light interrupt flowering?

It can. For photoperiod-sensitive plants, the dark interval should be as uninterrupted as practical. A quick passage through the room is different from leaving a bright lamp on for hours, but repeated or prolonged light during the scheduled night can break the signal that a long-night plant uses to initiate flowers.

Ways to protect the night

  • Place flowering plants where household lamps and overhead lights do not shine directly on them after the timer turns the grow light off.
  • Close curtains or move the plant away from a street-facing window if outdoor lighting reaches the leaves.
  • Use an opaque curtain or a separate growing area when a species has a strict photoperiod requirement.
  • Do not open the grow area repeatedly during the dark interval to check the plant under bright light.

For ordinary foliage plants that are not being induced to flower, occasional low-level room light is generally less consequential than an inconsistent grow-light schedule. Flowering plants deserve the stricter treatment.

What if the plant looks stressed?

Use the leaves and growth pattern to decide whether to change duration, intensity, or distance. Change one variable at a time so the result is understandable.

Bleached, scorched, or excessively red leaves

Reduce light intensity or move the fixture farther away. These symptoms can indicate that the leaves are receiving too much light or heat, not necessarily that the timer runs too many hours. Inspect for dry, crisp patches and check whether the fixture becomes hot near the canopy.

Long stems, wide gaps between leaves, or leaning toward the fixture

Increase effective intensity or improve fixture placement. A plant can receive the correct number of hours and still stretch if the light is too weak or too far away. Center the canopy under the fixture and make gradual distance changes.

Leaf drop after changing the timer

Return to a stable schedule and check the other environmental changes made at the same time. A sudden change in duration, intensity, temperature, watering, or window location can produce overlapping symptoms. Avoid responding by switching to 24-hour light.

Healthy foliage but no flowers

Check the species’ photoperiod requirement first. A long-night plant may be receiving enough total light but losing its flowering signal to room lamps, streetlights, or an overly short night. Protect a continuous dark interval for the required number of hours before changing the fixture.

Does spectrum or fixture choice matter?

Timing cannot compensate for a fixture that does not deliver useful light to the plant. When window light is insufficient, a balanced or full-spectrum indoor LED grow light is a practical general-purpose choice because it supplies a broad spectrum suitable for foliage and many seed-starting situations. Fixture coverage and intensity still matter: the light should reach the entire canopy without creating a very bright center and dim edges.

Follow the fixture maker’s safety instructions for mounting height, ventilation, and electrical load. Keep water away from plugs and connections, and use a timer rated for the fixture’s load. A timer controls duration; it does not make an incorrectly placed or excessively powerful light safe for the plant.

Seasonal and species-specific adjustments

Use generic schedules only as a starting point. Species differ in their natural day length, flowering trigger, and tolerance of high light. Seedlings commonly receive the longest schedule in this guide, while mature foliage plants generally need less. A flowering houseplant may require a longer light period for growth but a protected long night to set buds, depending on the species and stage.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

When moving a plant from a low-light room to a strong fixture, increase exposure gradually rather than jumping straight to the maximum schedule. Likewise, reduce supplemental hours when natural daylight becomes strong enough to supply more of the daily target. Keep a note of the timer setting and the plant’s response so seasonal changes are deliberate instead of accidental.

Quick decision checklist

  • Is the plant receiving a daily dark period? If not, set one immediately.
  • Have you counted window light and grow-light hours together?
  • Is the total within the usual 10–16-hour practical range, or is there a documented seedling or crop-specific reason for a different schedule?
  • Is the timer repeating the same on/off cycle every day?
  • Does a flowering plant have an uninterrupted night free from lamps and streetlight?
  • Do symptoms point to intensity or heat rather than duration?
  • Does the species’ care guidance specify a photoperiod that overrides the generic starting point?

Common timing questions

Do plants need darkness at night to grow?

Most do. A regular dark period supports normal development and lets photoperiod-sensitive plants measure night length.

Is 12 hours of darkness enough?

It is a practical starting point for many foliage plants, lettuce, and herbs when paired with 12 hours of light. A particular flowering species may require a different uninterrupted night.

Can I run the light at night instead of during the day?

Yes, if the total daily schedule is correct and the plant’s dark period remains consistent. Choose hours that fit your room and keep the cycle stable.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

What happens if the timer misses a day?

Restore the normal schedule rather than compensating with continuous light. One irregular cycle is usually less harmful than repeatedly changing the timing.
