No—physical PS5 games generally do not save meaningful console storage. The PS5 copies the game from the disc to its internal SSD, or to a compatible M.2 SSD expansion, before you play. A disc can reduce the first internet download when it includes the required launch data, but patches, extra content and updates still need storage. For most disc-based games, you must also keep the disc inserted because it acts as the license to launch the installed game.

What happens when you install a physical PS5 game?

A PS5 disc is an installation source, not a game drive. When you insert it, the console copies the required game files to its internal storage. PlayStation states that PS5 games must reside on the console’s internal SSD before they can run. The optical drive is not fast enough, and is not designed, to stream the complete game continuously during play.

The same basic process applies whether the source is a disc or a download:

  • Physical edition: the console reads installation data from the disc and writes it to the SSD.
  • Digital edition: the console downloads the installation data and writes it to the SSD.
  • After installation: the game runs from SSD storage, while the disc is checked as proof that you own the physical copy.

Game saves are stored on PS5 console storage as well. They are separate from the main installation, so deleting a game does not necessarily mean deleting its saved data; use the console’s storage-management controls deliberately when removing content.

Two-disc releases

Some large releases split their data across two discs. Sony’s installation instructions for these games require you to insert the data disc first and then the play disc. The installation completes automatically, but the play disc must remain inserted whenever you launch the game. Both discs provide installation data; neither allows the PS5 to run the game directly from the optical media.

Do physical and digital PS5 games use the same amount of space?

Usually, yes. Once setup is complete, a disc edition and its digital equivalent generally occupy comparable SSD capacity because the console must install the playable files either way. The exact result is title-dependent: a particular disc may include a launch build, optional language packs or other content that differs from a digital package, and later downloads can change the final footprint.

Sony does not publish a universal average or percentage for storage savings from buying discs. The reliable rule is behavioral rather than numerical: the game has to be installed on an SSD before play, so the disc does not create a storage-saving loophole.

Question Physical PS5 game Digital PS5 game
How the initial files arrive Copied from the disc; internet may still be needed for patches or additional content Downloaded over the network
Installed storage after setup Usually comparable to the digital version; depends on the title and included content Usually comparable to the disc installation; depends on the title and included content
Updates and patches Downloaded and installed when available Downloaded and installed when available
What is needed to launch The game disc generally must be inserted Your account entitlement; no disc
Transfer or resale The physical copy can generally be lent or transferred under normal ownership rules The entitlement is normally tied to the purchasing account and cannot be resold as a separate game

Does a PS5 disc avoid the download?

It can reduce the initial download, but it does not guarantee a zero-download installation. A disc may contain the game’s launch build, allowing the console to copy that data locally instead of downloading the entire package. However, the game can still require internet access for several reasons:

  • A patch released after the disc was manufactured.
  • Downloadable content that was never placed on the disc.
  • Additional language files or other optional packages.
  • Title-specific data that the publisher distributes online.
  • Online services, account checks or multiplayer components.

There is no single Sony rule saying that every disc contains every file needed for offline play. Check the individual game’s requirements if you need to install it with limited or no internet access. Even when the launch version is complete enough to start offline, later fixes and content remain optional downloads that consume SSD space.

Do physical PS5 games need updates?

Yes. PlayStation says that when you start a game or app, it automatically updates to the newest available version. You can also check manually by highlighting the game on the home screen, pressing the Options button, and selecting Check for Update.

A physical copy does not freeze the game at the version printed on the disc. The console installs the disc’s build first, then applies any available patch. Updates may fix bugs, improve performance, add features, change online compatibility or provide post-launch content. The patch files use storage in addition to the installed game data, although the console may replace or reorganize files during installation.

Game updates versus PS5 system software

These are separate processes. A game patch updates the title; system software updates the PS5 itself. Sony notes that you may be notified when an inserted game disc requires a later PS5 system-software version. Keeping the console software current can therefore be a prerequisite for running some discs, even if the game itself has not just received a patch.

Can you play a PS5 game directly from the disc?

No. The required PS5 game data must be installed on the internal SSD before play. After installation, the disc normally remains in the drive as an ownership check. Removing it while the game is running may not stop the current session immediately, but the console will require the disc again when you launch the game.

This is different from using a disc as removable storage. The drive supplies installation data and verifies the license; it does not provide a way to keep the game off the SSD while you play.

What to do when the PS5 storage is full

If a disc game will not install because the SSD is full, changing from physical to digital will not solve the underlying capacity problem. Use one of the storage strategies Sony documents for PS5:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Use a compatible M.2 SSD for playable expansion

An M.2 SSD installed in the PS5’s expansion slot is the direct way to increase the space available for installing and playing PS5 games. Choose a model that meets Sony’s compatibility, interface, cooling and performance requirements. Once installed and formatted by the console, it can hold PS5 games without moving them back to the internal drive for play.

Use USB extended storage as an archive

USB extended storage can hold PS5 games for transfer and can be useful when you want to keep a library without occupying the internal SSD. Sony’s FAQ specifies that PS5 games stored on USB extended storage must be copied back to the internal SSD before they can be played. This makes USB storage an archive or staging location, not a substitute for playable SSD capacity.

Remove optional content where the game supports it

Some games provide Preferred Install or similar controls. These can let you prioritize a mode, such as a campaign or multiplayer component, and remove selected modes or content you do not need. Availability and granularity vary by game; the option is not a universal PS5 feature.

Manage saves and other data separately

PS5 storage tools also cover saved data, captures, applications and other files. Review those categories before deleting a game. A USB drive or cloud storage can be used for supported save-management workflows, while the game installation itself still requires the internal SSD or a playable M.2 expansion.

How to install a two-disc PS5 game

  1. Turn on the PS5 and insert the disc labeled for data or installation.
  2. Wait while the console copies the installation files to its SSD. Keep the console powered on and do not eject the disc during this step.
  3. When prompted, remove the data disc and insert the play disc.
  4. Allow any remaining installation to finish, then install available game updates.
  5. Leave the play disc inserted whenever you want to launch the game.

If the console asks for the other disc, follow the label and on-screen prompt rather than repeatedly reinserting the same disc. The exact labels differ by release, but the data-disc-first, play-disc-second order is Sony’s documented process for split-data games.

What happens with PS4 discs upgraded to PS5 versions?

Eligible PS4 disc owners can download a digital PS5 version on a PS5 that has a disc drive. The downloaded PS5 build uses storage like any other PS5 game; the fact that the entitlement began with a PS4 disc does not make it run from the disc or reduce its SSD requirement.

The PS4 disc must remain inserted each time you play the upgraded PS5 version. A PS5 Digital Edition without a disc drive cannot perform this disc-based ownership check, so disc-based upgrade eligibility depends on having the appropriate hardware.

Common misconceptions about PS5 game discs

“The disc contains the whole game, so it cannot need an update.”

The disc contains a particular build created before release or manufacturing. Developers can publish newer patches afterward, and optional or online content may never have been on the disc.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

“Installing from a disc means I can play without any SSD space.”

The opposite is true: installation from the disc is what creates the SSD copy required for play. You need enough free space for the game and any update being applied.

“Deleting the installation destroys my physical copy.”

Deleting the installed files does not erase the disc. You can reinstall later by inserting it again, provided the disc is readable and the console has enough free space. Any required patches will need to be downloaded again.

“A digital purchase always takes more space than a disc.”

Both editions ultimately rely on SSD files. Differences can occur because of title-specific packaging, optional downloads or updates, but there is no general physical-media storage advantage established by Sony.

Which format makes sense if storage is your main concern?

Choose based on access and ownership preferences, not an expectation of large storage savings. A disc is useful if you want to lend or resell a copy, reduce the first download when its data is complete, or buy games when internet bandwidth is limited. Digital ownership is convenient when you want to switch games without changing discs and have reliable broadband, but it still requires the same kind of installed SSD capacity.

For a large library, capacity planning matters more than format. Keep frequently played games on the internal SSD or a compatible M.2 SSD, archive less-used PS5 games on USB extended storage, and account for patches when estimating free space. The disc can provide the files and the license, but it cannot replace playable SSD storage.
