Yes, but only under the right conditions. Phase-change materials (PCMs) can reduce indoor temperature swings and move some cooling demand to a later time in hot climates. They work when the material changes phase within the building’s normal temperature cycle and can discharge its stored heat during a cooler period. If it never resets overnight, is installed where heat cannot reach it, or is paired with a leaky, poorly shaded envelope, the benefit can be small.
For an older building, treat PCM as one part of an envelope retrofit—not as a replacement for insulation, air sealing, shading, ventilation or air conditioning. The strongest evidence comes from specific wall-and-ceiling assemblies, modeled configurations and monitored retrofit packages, so the results below are useful for screening options rather than promising a result for every house.
What a phase-change material does in a building
A PCM stores heat as it changes phase, usually by melting, then releases that heat as it solidifies. That latent-heat storage lets a wallboard, ceiling panel or other building layer absorb part of a daytime heat pulse without its temperature rising as quickly as it would with ordinary materials alone.

The material does not absorb heat indefinitely. Its useful capacity is tied to a phase-change temperature range. When the surrounding surface reaches that range, the PCM can absorb substantial heat while changing phase. Later, when the surface becomes cooler, it releases the stored heat and returns toward its original phase. A successful installation therefore has two distinct periods:

- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
- Charging: heat enters the PCM during the hot part of the day.
- Discharging: cooler outdoor air, nighttime ventilation or another heat sink removes the stored heat before the next hot cycle.
If the building stays hot through the night, the PCM may remain partly melted. Its effective storage is then reduced the following day. This is why a material selected for a mild daily swing can underperform in a persistently hot, humid climate, while another formulation may suit that same climate better.
Why hot climates make PCM selection difficult
The phase-change range must match real operating temperatures
A 2023 review in the Journal of Energy Storage identifies selection of a suitable PCM as a central challenge in hot-weather applications. The relevant question is not whether a PCM has a large laboratory heat-storage capacity; it is whether its transition range overlaps the temperatures reached at the intended location in the building.
A ceiling exposed to a sun-heated roof, an interior partition and a shaded exterior wall can experience very different cycles. Occupancy, thermostat settings, internal equipment, window opening and air-conditioning schedules also change the temperature history. A material that is too warm may not begin absorbing heat until after the room has already become uncomfortable. One that is too cool may complete its transition early and offer little additional buffering during the afternoon peak.

Hot climates differ in their nighttime recovery potential. A dry location with a large day-night temperature swing may allow natural ventilation to discharge a PCM. A humid location with warm nights may provide little opportunity unless mechanical cooling or another heat sink is available. Ventilation controls, security constraints on open windows and local outdoor-air quality all affect whether a nighttime purge is practical.

Other envelope measures still control the heat load
Solar gain through windows, roof heat, air leakage and inadequate insulation can overwhelm the storage capacity of a thin PCM layer. The 2025 review Phase Change Materials Integration in Building Envelopes Under Different Climatic Conditions: State of the Art, Opportunities, and Challenges describes interacting variables including phase-change temperature, latent heat, thermal conductivity, thickness, layer position, solar exposure and operating conditions. PCM is therefore a timing and buffering measure, not a substitute for reducing the amount of heat entering the building.
What published studies have actually found
The evidence includes reviews, a California retrofit project and a 2025 study covering three Australian climates. Their results should be read with the test method and configuration attached to every number.
| Evidence | Location and configuration | Reported result | How to interpret it |
|---|---|---|---|
| 2023 hot-weather review | Multiple hot-climate PCM applications | Identifies temperature matching and reliable cycling as key challenges | Supports a conditional, climate-specific answer rather than a universal performance claim. |
| 2025 building-envelope review | Studies across different climates and envelope assemblies | Reported load reductions up to 30%; indoor temperature fluctuations as low as 2 °C | These are review-level upper and lower bounds, not typical results for every retrofit. |
| 2024 California Energy Commission project | PCM integrated with drill-and-fill insulation and aerosol envelope sealing; demonstrations in Vallejo, Sacramento and Los Angeles | Modeling validated by laboratory testing; variables included PCM thickness, insulation, sealing, thermal mass, window opening and nighttime ventilation | Shows that PCM can be evaluated as part of an existing-home package, but does not establish universal suitability or cost-effectiveness. |
| 2025 Australian study | PCM boards on walls and ceilings, with reflective-coating options; experiments plus validated EnergyPlus simulations in Sydney, Alice Springs and Darwin | Study-specific temperature, load-shifting, energy and payback results shown below | Results apply to the analyzed configurations and climates, not automatically to another building. |
Australian results by climate
| Location | Annual energy savings for the study’s optimal modeled configuration | Estimated payback across analyzed cases | Reported reduction in heatwave thermal discomfort |
|---|---|---|---|
| Sydney | 31.9 kWh/m²·year | Part of the overall 5.3–24-year range | 100% |
| Alice Springs | 60.6 kWh/m²·year | Part of the overall 5.3–24-year range | 86.7% |
| Darwin | 85.6 kWh/m²·year | Part of the overall 5.3–24-year range | 92.6% |
In the same study, PCM boards applied to both walls and ceilings produced a peak indoor-air-temperature reduction of up to 5.8 °C and shifted the peak load by up to 71 minutes. Those are maximum reported effects within the study’s tested and simulated configurations. The work also included reflective coatings, so the figures should not be treated as the isolated effect of PCM in every case.
What the California retrofit project means for older homes
The California Energy Commission’s report, Phase Change Material-Enhanced Insulation for Residential Exterior Wall Retrofits (report CEC-500-2024-086, updated July 12, 2024), examined PCM alongside a typical drill-and-fill insulation retrofit and aerosol envelope sealing. Researchers combined laboratory validation with modeling and varied the factors that often determine whether an older home benefits:

- PCM thickness and placement within the wall assembly
- Existing and added insulation levels
- Air sealing performance
- Thermal mass
- Window opening behavior
- Nighttime ventilation
Field demonstrations took place in three homes in Vallejo, Sacramento and Los Angeles. The project is important because it treats PCM as part of a retrofit package rather than as a stand-alone product. It does not, however, provide a universal installation specification for every wall type, nor does its summary establish that PCM will pay back in every older house.
How to decide whether PCM fits your building
- Document the daily temperature cycle. Record indoor and outdoor temperatures through representative hot days and nights. Note whether the building cools naturally after sunset, when air conditioning runs and whether rooms remain occupied overnight.
- Inspect the existing envelope. Identify insulation levels, air leaks, window condition, roof exposure, shading and major thermal bridges. Fixing uncontrolled leakage or excessive solar gain may deliver a larger and more dependable improvement than adding storage first.
- Define the target location. A roof-facing ceiling, sun-exposed wall and interior wall have different heat flows. Select the surface where the PCM will encounter the recurring heat pulse you want to moderate.
- Match the transition range to that surface. Use measured or modeled surface temperatures, not only the room thermostat setpoint. Ask the supplier or designer for the effective phase-change range, latent-heat capacity, thickness and thermal-conductivity data for the proposed assembly.
- Check the discharge path. Determine how stored heat leaves the PCM each night. Possible paths include outdoor-air ventilation, mechanical cooling or conduction to a cooler adjacent layer. If none is available, assume capacity will accumulate across days.
- Model the complete assembly. Include insulation, air leakage, windows, shading, occupancy, ventilation schedules and HVAC operation. A model that omits these variables can overstate PCM’s contribution.
- Plan verification. Measure room and surface temperatures, HVAC runtime and humidity before and after installation through comparable hot-weather periods. Compare peak conditions and recovery overnight, not just a single afternoon reading.
- Check installation constraints. Confirm that the chosen boards or tiles fit the wall or ceiling build-up, that fasteners and finishes are compatible, and that local building officials or a qualified professional accept the assembly. The available evidence does not constitute a code approval for every product.
Where PCM is usually placed
Walls
Wall boards can buffer heat entering from sun-exposed façades or adjacent hot spaces. Their performance depends on whether the PCM is close enough to the room-side surface to exchange heat during the occupied period. If it is buried behind a highly resistive layer, the material may respond too slowly to the daily cycle.
Ceilings and roof-adjacent surfaces
Ceilings can experience strong daytime heat pulses from the roof. The Australian study’s largest temperature and load-shifting configuration used PCM boards on both walls and ceilings, illustrating why surface coverage matters. More area and thickness are not automatically better: added material must still charge and discharge within the available cycle.

Combined assemblies
PCM paired with insulation and air sealing addresses different parts of the problem. Insulation slows heat flow, sealing limits uncontrolled air exchange and PCM shifts the timing of heat that still reaches the interior. The California project evaluated this combined approach because an older building’s baseline condition can dominate the result.

Costs, savings and payback
PCM economics depend on installed material cost, labor, access to walls or ceilings, electricity tariffs, HVAC efficiency, climate and the number of useful cycles per year. The Australian study estimated payback periods from 5.3 to 24 years across its analyzed retrofit cases. Those estimates belong to the study’s configurations and assumptions; they are not a quote for a homeowner in another region.
Peak-load shifting can have value even when annual energy savings are modest, particularly where demand charges or constrained evening capacity matter. Conversely, a household with low cooling use, warm nights and inexpensive electricity may not recover a substantial installation cost. Request a calculation that separates annual kilowatt-hours, peak demand, comfort changes and maintenance, rather than relying on a single payback number.

The material is installed in the wrong layer
Symptom: laboratory capacity appears high, but room temperatures barely change. Likely cause: thermal resistance between the PCM and the occupied space delays heat exchange. Fix: reassess layer position and surface exposure in a whole-assembly model.
Results cannot be reproduced
Symptom: measured savings differ sharply from a brochure or case study. Likely cause: different climate, occupancy, HVAC schedules, insulation, tariff or reflective-coating package. Fix: compare like with like and document the conditions attached to every claimed number.
A practical decision framework
PCM is a plausible candidate when most of the following are true:
- The building experiences a repeatable daytime heat pulse.
- Indoor or surface temperatures regularly enter the PCM’s transition range.
- A cooler period exists for discharge before the next peak.
- Windows, shading, insulation and leakage are already reasonable or will be improved together.
- The installation exposes enough wall or ceiling area to affect the occupied space.
- Energy prices, demand charges or comfort goals justify the installed cost.
- A professional can verify the assembly, moisture conditions and local requirements.
PCM is a weaker first move when nights remain hot, the building has severe air leakage, windows receive uncontrolled solar gain, or the proposed material’s transition range does not match measured temperatures. In those cases, envelope repairs, exterior shading, ventilation improvements or efficient cooling may offer a clearer return.
What the evidence does—and does not—prove
Published work demonstrates that PCM can moderate temperatures and shift cooling demand in selected hot-climate assemblies. It also shows that climate and configuration change the result substantially. The studies do not establish one universally correct PCM temperature, thickness or placement for all older buildings, and they do not replace a building-specific energy model or installation review.
For a retrofit decision, the most defensible approach is to treat PCM as a calibrated component: measure the building, select a material whose transition range matches the measured cycle, provide a reliable nighttime discharge path, and evaluate the complete envelope and HVAC system together.
