Yes, but only through local Nintendo DS features today. The Legend of Zelda: Phantom Hourglass has a two-player local Battle Mode, one-card DS Download Play, and Tag Mode for exchanging ship parts or treasure. It also had Nintendo Wi-Fi Connection battles, but Nintendo discontinued that service on May 20, 2014. The Legend of Zelda: Spirit Tracks adds local Battle Mode for two to four players, one-card Download Play for up to three guests, multi-card play, and Contact Mode treasure trading.

These are separate multiplayer activities rather than cooperative versions of either game’s main adventure. The original Nintendo DS, DS Lite, or DSi cartridges retain the wireless features; the Wii U Virtual Console releases are one-player and omit the original DS Download Play and Multi-Card Play functions.

Multiplayer features at a glance

Game Local battle One-card Download Play Multi-card play Local item exchange Original online service
Phantom Hourglass Two players, two DS systems, two game cards Two DS systems, one game card; results are not saved Battle Mode uses two cards Tag Mode exchanges ship parts or treasure Nintendo Wi-Fi Connection battles; discontinued May 20, 2014
Spirit Tracks Two to four players over DS Wireless Communications One host card plus up to three guest DS systems Each player uses a separate game card Contact Mode trades treasure No Nintendo Wi-Fi Connection battle mode documented
Wii U Virtual Console versions One player Not included Not included Original DS wireless features are omitted Not applicable

The player counts are mode limits stated in Nintendo’s instruction manuals, not estimates from user reports. A “one-card” session means one person supplies the game card while the other participating systems load a temporary Download Play version.

What multiplayer means in Phantom Hourglass

Two-player local Battle Mode

Phantom Hourglass provides a competitive Battle Mode over local wireless. Nintendo’s manual specifies two Nintendo DS systems and two Phantom Hourglass game cards for the standard multiplayer battle. Each player therefore needs compatible DS hardware and a physical copy of the game for this version of the mode.

Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
  • Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
  • Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
  • Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.

Battle Mode is separate from the single-player quest. It lets two nearby players compete rather than jointly control Link through the story. The game does not turn its campaign into a two-person co-op adventure, and the local battle does not replace progress in either player’s main save.

One-card DS Download Play

A second option allows two DS systems to play a battle with only one game card. The owner inserts the cartridge and starts the Download Play battle; the other DS joins by loading the temporary game data wirelessly. This is the practical choice when a friend owns a DS but does not have a copy of Phantom Hourglass.

The manual specifically warns that results from Download Play are not saved. Treat the session as a temporary match: closing it or ending the connection does not create a persistent multiplayer record on the guest system.

Tag Mode item exchange

Tag Mode is a different kind of local feature. You can place ship parts or treasure in magical boxes and exchange those items wirelessly with another player. It is for sharing or trading collectible material, not for entering a battle together.

Tag Mode continues searching for other players even when the DS is closed. That behavior is distinct from simply leaving a battle running: the system can remain in its closed state while Tag Mode looks for another compatible player. Both participants still need original DS hardware and the relevant cartridge version.

The former Nintendo Wi-Fi Connection mode

The original manual describes Nintendo Wi-Fi Connection battles against friends, rivals, or players worldwide. That service is no longer available. Nintendo states that Nintendo Wi-Fi Connection was discontinued on May 20, 2014, so a current copy of Phantom Hourglass cannot use the official online battle service.

Consequently, the reliable multiplayer options now are the local Battle Mode, one-card Download Play, and Tag Mode. Do not interpret the old Wi-Fi instructions in a second-hand manual as evidence that official internet matchmaking still operates.

What multiplayer means in Spirit Tracks

Battle Mode for two to four players

Spirit Tracks supports larger local matches than Phantom Hourglass. Its manual describes battles over DS Wireless Communications for two to four players, allowing one player to compete head-to-head against up to three others. Four is the total player limit for a local Battle Mode session.

This is still a competitive side mode, not a cooperative campaign. The main story remains a one-player adventure; the local battle is selected separately and uses the wireless connection between nearby DS systems.

Single-card Download Play for up to three guests

One person with the cartridge can host a Download Play battle. Up to three additional DS users can join without owning Spirit Tracks, giving a four-player session from one physical game card. The guests load the temporary data through the DS Download Play function while the host retains the cartridge.

This arrangement is different from multi-card play because only the host needs the game card. If you are organizing a group session, count the host separately: one cartridge supports one host plus as many as three Download Play guests, provided there are four compatible DS systems in total.

Multi-card play

Players who each own Spirit Tracks can use multi-card play instead. Every participant inserts a separate game card and connects through DS Wireless Communications. This is the cartridge-per-player option, while Download Play is the one-card option.

Both methods are local. They do not require an internet connection, a Nintendo account, or an active online service. The distinction is simply how many game cards are available and whether each system runs its own cartridge copy.

Contact Mode treasure trading

Contact Mode lets players trade treasure items over DS Wireless Communications. Like Phantom Hourglass Tag Mode, it is an exchange feature rather than a cooperative quest or battle. It gives a second reason to connect locally after the competitive mode has ended.

The manual’s multiplayer section documents local battle, Download Play, multi-card play, and Contact Mode. It does not document a Nintendo Wi-Fi Connection battle mode for Spirit Tracks, so there is no supported official online matchmaking feature to activate.

What you need for local play

  • An original Nintendo DS, DS Lite, or DSi system for each participant.
  • The original DS game-card release of Phantom Hourglass or Spirit Tracks.
  • For each system, a charged battery and functioning local wireless hardware.
  • For multi-card sessions, one physical cartridge per player.
  • For Download Play, one host cartridge and additional DS systems that can use DS Download Play.

The Wii U Virtual Console editions do not provide the same setup. Nintendo identifies those releases as one-player versions without Multi-Card Play or DS Download Play, so adding multiple Wii U controllers does not recreate the DS wireless modes.

How to start a local session

Phantom Hourglass with two cartridges

  1. Start Phantom Hourglass on both DS systems with a game card inserted in each.
  2. Open the game’s multiplayer selection and choose Battle Mode on the host system.
  3. On the second DS, choose the local wireless option and join the displayed battle.
  4. Confirm the match on both systems and play the two-player battle.

This procedure uses the manual’s two-system, two-card configuration. If the second system cannot see the host, verify that both cartridges are the same game release and that neither DS is in an unrelated wireless menu.

Phantom Hourglass with one cartridge

  1. Insert the single cartridge in the host DS and launch the game.
  2. Choose the Battle Mode’s DS Download Play option on the host.
  3. On the second DS, open the system’s Download Play function and select the broadcast Phantom Hourglass session.
  4. Wait for the temporary game data to load, then accept the match on both systems.

End the session knowing that Download Play results are not saved. If both players want the cartridge-based configuration instead, use two game cards and the standard local Battle Mode.

Spirit Tracks with one to four systems

  1. Launch Spirit Tracks on the host DS and select its local Battle Mode.
  2. Choose Download Play when guests do not have cartridges, or multi-card play when every participant has a copy.
  3. For Download Play, have each guest open DS Download Play and select the host’s broadcast.
  4. Wait until all intended players have joined; the mode supports two to four total players.
  5. Start the battle after the host confirms the participant list.

In a one-card setup, the host can be joined by up to three guests. In a multi-card setup, every participant uses a separate Spirit Tracks cartridge.

Using Tag Mode or Contact Mode

  1. Open Tag Mode in Phantom Hourglass or Contact Mode in Spirit Tracks.
  2. Prepare the ship parts, treasure, or other eligible items for exchange in the game’s relevant storage screen.
  3. Place the systems close enough for their local wireless signals to connect and leave the mode active.
  4. Accept the detected player or trade request, then confirm the items on both systems before completing the exchange.

Phantom Hourglass Tag Mode can continue searching while its DS is closed. Contact Mode in Spirit Tracks is likewise a local wireless treasure-trading feature, not an internet service.

Original DS cartridges versus Wii U Virtual Console

Platform Multiplayer status What is missing on Wii U
Nintendo DS, DS Lite, or DSi with the original cartridge Supports the documented local wireless modes for the relevant game Nothing from the original local feature set, assuming compatible hardware and cartridges
Wii U Virtual Console One-player release Multi-Card Play and DS Download Play; the original DS wireless multiplayer features are not included

This platform difference is the most important buying decision. A Wii U copy can reproduce the single-player game, but it cannot connect to nearby DS systems for the original battles, Download Play sessions, Tag Mode, or Contact Mode exchanges.

Which game is better for local multiplayer?

  • Choose Phantom Hourglass if two-player battles, one-card play for one friend, or ship-part and treasure exchange are your priorities. Its local Battle Mode is limited to two players.
  • Choose Spirit Tracks for a larger group. It supports two to four players in Battle Mode, one host plus up to three Download Play guests, multi-card play, and Contact Mode treasure trading.
  • Choose original DS hardware and cartridges for any of these wireless features. The Wii U Virtual Console versions are one-player and remove the DS Download Play and Multi-Card Play functions.

Common problems and their causes

A friend cannot join with no cartridge

Use the game’s Download Play option rather than multi-card play. Download Play is the one-card arrangement; multi-card play expects each participant to supply a cartridge. In Phantom Hourglass, Download Play supports two systems. In Spirit Tracks, it supports the host plus up to three guests.

The Wii U version does not show wireless options

That is expected. The Virtual Console editions are one-player and omit the original Multi-Card Play and DS Download Play features. Use an original DS-family system and cartridge for local wireless play.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

An online battle will not connect

Phantom Hourglass‘s official Nintendo Wi-Fi Connection service ended on May 20, 2014. Spirit Tracks‘ manual does not document a Nintendo Wi-Fi Connection battle mode. Use the local wireless modes instead.

Trading is confused with multiplayer battles

Tag Mode in Phantom Hourglass and Contact Mode in Spirit Tracks exchange items. They do not create a cooperative story session. Select Battle Mode when the goal is a competitive match; select the trading mode when the goal is exchanging ship parts or treasure.
