Yes—passive speakers need an external source of amplification. They contain speaker drivers and a crossover but no power amplifier, so they cannot play from a phone, television, DAC, or preamp by themselves. Connect them to an integrated amplifier, stereo receiver, AV receiver, or standalone power amplifier that provides suitable speaker-level outputs.

“Separate” does not necessarily mean a second box beside the speakers. An AV receiver or integrated amplifier already combines amplification with other functions. The important checks are impedance compatibility, channel count, available power for your listening conditions, and correct speaker wiring.

What makes a speaker passive?

A passive loudspeaker receives an audio signal and electrical power from an external amplifier. Inside the enclosure are the drivers, such as a woofer and tweeter, plus a passive crossover that divides frequencies between them. There is no mains-powered amplifier module in the cabinet.

The signal path is therefore: source component, preamp or control section, power amplifier, speaker wire, then passive speaker. A source with only a headphone output, USB audio output, optical output, or line-level RCA output does not normally provide the speaker-level power a passive speaker needs.

Connecting a passive speaker directly to a line output may produce silence or only a very faint signal. Connecting it to an output that is not designed for a speaker load can also damage equipment. Use the speaker terminals identified by the amplifier or receiver manufacturer.

Does the amplifier have to be a separate box?

No. The requirement is external amplification, not a particular component layout.

  • Integrated amplifier: combines a preamplifier, source inputs, volume control, and power amplifier for a stereo pair.
  • Stereo receiver: adds a radio tuner to the integrated-amplifier functions.
  • AV receiver: provides multiple amplified channels for stereo, surround, or other home-theater layouts, along with video and surround-processing features on many models.
  • Power amplifier: supplies speaker power but generally relies on a separate preamp, streamer, DAC, mixer, or AV processor for source selection and volume control.

If you already own an AV receiver or integrated amplifier with compatible speaker outputs, you do not need to buy another amplifier simply because the speakers are passive. A preamp, DAC, or streamer with only line-level outputs is different: it controls or supplies the signal but still needs a power-amplification stage.

How to choose compatible amplification

Start with the exact speaker model and its manual. Do not choose by wattage alone; the useful match depends on several specifications and on how you will listen.

1. Check nominal impedance and the supported load

Find the speaker’s nominal impedance, commonly expressed in ohms, and compare it with the amplifier’s stated speaker-load range. An amplifier that is not designed for the speaker’s load may overheat, shut down, distort, or fail.

Nominal impedance is a label, not a constant resistance. Loudspeaker impedance changes with frequency, so a speaker marked with one nominal value can present a more difficult load at some parts of the music spectrum. Use the manufacturer’s compatibility information rather than assuming that any amplifier will safely drive any speaker.

2. Provide enough channels

A conventional stereo pair requires two amplified channels, one for the left speaker and one for the right. A five-speaker surround arrangement needs five suitable channels; additional passive speakers require additional channels or a separate amplifier connected through appropriate outputs. Count the speakers you intend to run at the same time, not merely the number of terminals on the back of a component.

3. Judge power for the real listening situation

Required power depends on speaker sensitivity, listening distance, room size and acoustics, desired volume, and the music or program material. A speaker’s maximum, peak, or music-power figure is not a guaranteed amplifier requirement and is not a direct measure of loudness.

Higher sensitivity generally means a speaker can produce a given sound level with less amplifier power. A low-sensitivity speaker, a long listening distance, a large room, or sustained high levels can require more output. The speaker’s RMS or continuous-handling specification and the amplifier’s output rating are useful parts of the decision, but neither figure should be interpreted in isolation.

Daakro AK45 Stereo Audio Amplifier 300W Bluetooth 5.1
  • Bass & Treble Control】Designed with volume, treble and bass control knobs for more delicate adjustment of the sound, much fun and high playability. Include controller for distant audio adjustments. Note: There is an isolation plastic sheet at the bottom of the remote control, which needs to be removed before use.

Some manufacturer guidance describes using an amplifier rated slightly above a speaker’s RMS handling as one possible matching approach, while also noting that it is not mandatory in every system. The safe choice is an amplifier whose published load and output specifications fit the speaker and your intended level, with enough headroom to avoid clipping.

4. Confirm inputs and system role

List the sources you need: television, turntable, CD player, game console, computer, streamer, microphone, or other equipment. Then verify that the amplifier or receiver accepts those connections. A phono cartridge normally needs a phono preamp; a digital source needs a compatible DAC or digital input; a device with only a preamp output still needs a power amplifier.

Amplifier options compared

Option What it includes When it fits passive speakers What to verify
Integrated amplifier Source control, volume, and stereo power amplification A straightforward two-channel system Speaker impedance range, output power, inputs, and number of speaker zones
Stereo receiver Integrated amplifier functions plus a tuner Listeners who want radio and stereo playback The same impedance and power checks as an integrated amplifier
AV receiver Several power-amplifier channels, source switching, and often surround/video processing Stereo or multichannel passive-speaker systems Amplified channel count, load support, per-channel output conditions, and required inputs
Standalone power amplifier Power amplification; source control is external Systems with a separate preamp, processor, DAC, or mixer Input type, gain structure, output power, impedance support, and cooling
Preamp, DAC, or streamer without speaker outputs Signal selection or conversion but no speaker power Not sufficient by itself Add a compatible power amplifier or integrated amplifier

How to connect passive speakers safely

Use speaker wire from each amplifier channel to its corresponding speaker. The exact terminal names vary, but one side is positive and the other negative. Follow the manuals for both components.

  1. Switch everything off. Turn off the amplifier or receiver and disconnect power while making connections.
  2. Identify the channels. Connect the left speaker to the left amplifier output and the right speaker to the right output. For a multichannel system, use the terminals assigned to each speaker position.
  3. Prepare the wire. Strip only the amount recommended by the equipment. If using bare strands, twist them tightly so no loose strands can escape.
  4. Match polarity. Connect positive on the amplifier to positive on the speaker, and negative to negative. Reversed polarity can reduce bass and make stereo imaging sound unfocused.
  5. Secure the terminals. Tighten binding posts or insert banana plugs as the manuals specify. Keep bare positive and negative conductors from touching each other or adjacent terminals.
  6. Inspect before powering up. Confirm that every channel is connected once, no wire strands are shorting terminals, and the speaker impedance is within the amplifier’s supported range.
  7. Test at low volume. Play a familiar recording quietly, verify left and right operation, then raise the level gradually while listening for distortion, protection shutdowns, or unusual heat.

Speaker-wire gauge

Wire resistance becomes more significant as a run gets longer or the speaker load becomes more demanding. A manufacturer’s recommendation for one speaker should not be treated as a universal rule. For example, the guidance for the Klipsch AW-650 specifies 16-gauge or heavier stranded copper wire and recommends heavier wire for longer runs to reduce power lost in the cable. Use the gauge and maximum-run advice supplied for your particular equipment.

Passive and powered speakers: the practical difference

Consideration Passive speakers Powered speakers
Amplifier External integrated amplifier, receiver, or power amplifier required Amplification built into at least one enclosure
Setup Requires an amplifier, speaker wire, and compatible connections Usually fewer separate components; mains power is required for the powered enclosure
Upgrades Speaker and amplifier can be replaced independently Amplifier electronics are tied to the speaker design
Pair construction Both speakers normally connect to amplifier channels The second enclosure may be passive and connect to the powered one by speaker wire
Best question to ask Does my amplifier safely support this speaker load? Which enclosure contains the amplifier, and what inputs and connections does the pair require?

Powered speakers do not automatically mean that every cabinet has its own amplifier. Many pairs place the amplifier in one enclosure and send power to the other. Read the product manual before buying cables or assuming that a receiver is unnecessary.

Common connection mistakes and fixes

No sound at all

  • Check that the source is playing and the amplifier is on the correct input.
  • Confirm that the speaker wires are connected to amplified speaker terminals, not line-level, pre-out, subwoofer, or tape outputs.
  • Check the receiver’s speaker-zone, mute, and protection settings.
  • Test one known-good cable and one speaker at a time to isolate the fault.

Sound is weak or distorted

  • Make sure a low-level output is not being used as though it were a speaker output.
  • Reduce the volume if the amplifier is clipping or entering protection.
  • Recheck polarity and make sure the wire is firmly clamped.
  • Verify that the amplifier is not being asked to drive an impedance below its specified range.

The amplifier becomes very hot or shuts down

Turn it off and disconnect the speakers before troubleshooting further. Look for stray wire strands, a shorted cable, an overload caused by an unsupported speaker load, blocked ventilation, or too many speakers connected to one channel. Do not repeatedly reset a protection circuit without finding the cause; continued operation can damage the amplifier or speakers.

Only one speaker works

Swap the left and right wires at the amplifier, not at both ends simultaneously. If the problem moves, inspect the source channel or amplifier output. If it stays with the same speaker, inspect that speaker, its cable, and its terminal connection.

When a passive system is the better choice

Choose passive speakers when you want to select the amplifier separately, accommodate a particular number of channels, place the amplifier away from the speakers, or upgrade either component independently. This approach adds equipment and matching decisions, but it can make future repairs and system changes more flexible.

Choose powered speakers when minimizing separate boxes and speaker-wire runs matters more than swapping amplification independently. Neither design is automatically better sounding; implementation, room placement, speaker design, amplifier compatibility, and listening goals determine the result.

A quick compatibility checklist

  • Speaker model and manual identified.
  • Nominal impedance compared with the amplifier’s supported load.
  • Enough amplified channels for every passive speaker used simultaneously.
  • Power judged against sensitivity, listening distance, room, and target level—not peak wattage alone.
  • All required source inputs and any phono or digital conversion needs confirmed.
  • Correct speaker terminals and suitable wire selected.
  • Polarity, ventilation, and short-circuit risks checked before testing.
