Yes—but only some animal mouth contacts fit a careful scientific definition of kissing. Bonobos and chimpanzees have documented, directed mouth-to-mouth contact, and observations also exist for most living great apes and some Afro-Eurasian monkeys. However, a nose touch, a dog licking a person, food passed from one mouth to another, grooming, or a mouth contact during a fight is not automatically the same behavior as a human kiss.
The most useful comparison starts by defining the behavior rather than assuming that every action popularly called a “kiss” has the same purpose. Animals can make similar physical contact while using it for greeting, affiliation, reassurance, reconciliation, feeding, or conflict. The available evidence does not show that they attach the same romantic or cultural meaning to kissing that humans do.
What counts as a kiss in animals?
In a 2026 review in Evolution and Human Behavior, Matilda Brindle, Catherine F. Talbot, and Stuart West propose a cross-species definition: “We therefore define kissing as non-agonistic interactions involving directed, intraspecific, oral-oral contact with some movement of the lips/mouthparts and no food transfer.”

- Directed: The animals intentionally orient toward each other, rather than touching by accident.
- Intraspecific: The contact is between members of the same species. An animal approaching a human’s face does not by itself demonstrate an animal kissing behavior.
- Oral-oral: The mouths or mouthparts meet. Nose touching, cheek contact, and licking are different forms of contact.
- Some movement of the lips or mouthparts: A brief collision is not enough; the behavior includes an active mouth movement.
- Non-agonistic: The interaction is not an attack, threat, or struggle.
- No food transfer: Premastication, regurgitation, or passing food mouth-to-mouth is classified separately, even though the mouths touch.
This is a comparative tool, not a claim that every species experiences a kiss as a human does. A broader everyday definition will produce a longer list; a narrower definition will exclude behaviors that look similar but have another function.
Which animals have documented kissing?
The strongest documented cases are among great apes. The 2026 comparative review reports kissing in chimpanzees and bonobos and includes orangutans and western lowland gorillas among the great apes with records. It also identifies observations in some Afro-Eurasian monkeys. The review collates species-level reports, so the list should not be read as a frequency ranking or as proof that every member of a listed species kisses regularly.
| Animal group | What has been reported | How to interpret the evidence |
|---|---|---|
| Bonobos | Directed mouth-to-mouth contact; described in educational accounts as friendly, affectionate, or a greeting | Much of the published record comes from captive or sanctuary animals. The comparative review says bonobos had not, to its authors’ knowledge, been observed kissing in the wild. |
| Chimpanzees | Mouth contact appears in species records and in observations alongside embraces and pats | Context varies. A chimpanzee mouth contact should not automatically be labeled romantic; its social meaning depends on the interaction. |
| Orangutans | Included among great apes with reported kissing observations | The existence of a record does not establish how common the behavior is or what function it serves. |
| Western lowland gorillas | Rare observations are reported | “Rare” describes the available observations, not proof that the behavior never occurs more often. |
| Some Afro-Eurasian monkeys | The review lists several monkey taxa with comparable oral contact | Coverage is incomplete, and absence of a published record is not evidence of absence. |
| Other mammals, birds, fish, and insects | Sources sometimes use “kissing” for superficially similar actions | Each example must be checked against the oral-contact, non-aggressive, no-food-transfer criteria; many do not qualify. |
The safest conclusion is therefore “some animals kiss under a defined behavioral comparison,” not “all animals kiss” and not “only one nonhuman species does.”

Bonobos are among the clearest nonhuman examples of mouth-to-mouth contact that resembles a kiss. PBS NOVA’s educational feature Read My Lips, created in 2007, describes kissing in captive bonobos as generally a sign of friendship and affection and sometimes a greeting. That is useful behavioral context, but it does not establish that every bonobo kiss has one fixed meaning.
The comparative review adds an important qualification: records of bonobo kissing are largely from captive or sanctuary settings, and the authors had not found observations of bonobos kissing in the wild. Captive settings can make close observation easier and can change social conditions, group composition, and opportunities for contact. The lack of a wild record should not be turned into “wild bonobos never kiss”; it means that the behavior has not yet been documented there in the reviewed evidence.
“Affection” in an observational account should also be read carefully. It describes the surrounding social pattern, not a measurement that bonobos feel human-style romance. Bonobos may use mouth contact as one affiliative signal among many, including grooming, embracing, and other forms of proximity.

Do chimpanzees kiss?
Yes. Chimpanzee kissing appears in the comparative review’s species records, and observations described in a 2026 Durham University account place kissing alongside embraces and pats in social interactions before feeding. Chimpanzees can also make vulnerable mouth contacts in contexts involving tension or conflict. Consequently, the same visible action cannot be assigned one universal emotional label.
The Durham account summarizes work by Zanna Clay and Jake Brooker involving 116 apes across five groups and 60 sessions at Lola ya Bonobo in the Democratic Republic of Congo and Chimfunshi in Zambia. The researchers examined friendly contact before food competition. Greater pre-feeding contact—including kissing, embracing, and patting—was associated with more peaceful feeding alongside others. This is an association in the study setting, not proof that kissing alone caused tolerance or prevented aggression.
The researchers’ fieldwork in the Democratic Republic of Congo and Zambia lasted eight months. That duration provides context for the project, but it is not the number of sessions or a claim that every observed kiss occurred continuously throughout those months. Clay and Brooker summarize their interpretation this way: “Our findings suggest that pre-emptive friendly touch may be part of how that tolerance is maintained.”
How is an animal kiss different from other mouth contact?
Several behaviors can look like kissing when viewed briefly. Separating them is essential because they can have different immediate functions and evolutionary histories.
Nose-to-nose contact
Nose touching is reported widely across mammals and has its own developing literature. A 2026 review, Exploring nose-to-nose contact in mammals, describes the behavior as common yet underexplored, with proposed roles varying according to species and sociality. Nose-to-nose contact may convey information or facilitate social assessment, but it does not meet a mouth-to-mouth definition of kissing.
Food transfer and premastication
Parents or social partners may transfer food directly, including by passing partly chewed food. Because the contact is linked to feeding, the comparative definition excludes it. A physical resemblance to a kiss does not override the behavior’s nutritional function.

Grooming and licking
Grooming usually involves one animal using its mouth or hands on another animal’s fur, skin, or external parasites. Licking can be social, hygienic, or exploratory. Neither is automatically oral-oral contact between two mouths, so calling every lick a kiss erases the distinction the comparison is meant to study.
Aggressive mouth contact
Biting, threat displays, grappling, and mouth contact during a fight are agonistic. They fail the “non-agonistic” part of the definition even if the animals’ mouths meet. A chimpanzee contact observed during a dispute should be described in that conflict context rather than converted into an affectionate story.
Cross-species contact with humans
Pets and captive animals may touch or lick a person’s face. That can reflect learned behavior, food expectation, greeting, grooming-like contact, or exploration. It is not evidence of an intraspecific kiss because the partners are different species and the behavior may not involve the same mouth movements or social function.

Popular descriptions sometimes call mouth contact in fish, insects, or other animals a kiss. Such labels may be useful shorthand, but the underlying acts must be specified. For example, contact used in combat, courtship displays without mouth-to-mouth movement, or feeding does not satisfy the comparative definition simply because observers use the word “kiss.”
What social purposes might kissing serve?
Observed context offers clues, but the function of animal kissing remains unresolved. The comparative review emphasizes that the available data are limited and that the fitness benefits of kissing are unclear. It is therefore better to report what happens around the contact than to assign an untested motive.
Greeting and affiliation
Bonobo accounts describe kissing as sometimes a greeting and generally friendly or affectionate. In a social species, a short mouth-to-mouth contact may help initiate or reinforce a relationship, much as other affiliative touches do. This interpretation is strongest when the surrounding behavior is relaxed and non-aggressive.

Reassurance before competition
The Durham study’s pre-feeding observations connect friendly touch—including kissing—with more peaceful feeding alongside others. Contact before a contest over food may help maintain tolerance or signal that a partner is not an immediate threat. The study measured an association across groups and sessions; it did not isolate kissing as the active cause.
Conflict-related contact
Chimpanzee social life includes reconciliation and tension management, and mouth contacts can occur in contexts that are not simply friendly. A kiss-like action during or around conflict may therefore have a different role from a bonobo greeting. Without detailed observation of sequence, posture, vocalization, and what follows, the same movement is difficult to interpret.
Why “love” and “romance” are unsafe translations
Human kissing can carry romantic, sexual, familial, ceremonial, or cultural meanings. Animal observations generally record movement and context rather than private feelings or symbolic conventions. Saying that a bonobo or chimpanzee “kisses for love” goes beyond what these studies establish. “Affiliative contact,” “greeting,” or “pre-feeding friendly touch” is more precise when those are the observed circumstances.

Brindle, Talbot, and West used comparative and phylogenetic analysis to estimate that kissing may have originated in the ancestor of the great apes approximately 21.5–16.9 million years ago. The estimate is a model-based reconstruction from present-day species and incomplete records. No researcher observed an ancestral ape kissing, and the date should not be presented as proof that a human-style romantic kiss existed then.
The analysis reports associations between kissing and multi-male mating systems, non-folivorous diets, and premastication. These are hypotheses about conditions that may have favored the evolution of the behavior, not settled explanations. A non-folivorous diet, for example, is a comparative trait associated with the estimate; it does not identify a single cause in any living species.
The authors describe their article as “a starting point for future comparative research on the evolution of kissing.” That qualification matters because species records are sparse, unevenly reported, and often drawn from captive or sanctuary observations. A reconstructed ancestral behavior becomes more secure only when additional species, wild observations, and standardized definitions are available.

How strong is the evidence?
Evidence for the existence of mouth-to-mouth contact is stronger than evidence for its meaning or evolutionary advantage. A repeated, directed observation can establish that a behavior occurs. It cannot by itself show that the behavior is common, universal within a species, emotionally equivalent to human kissing, or beneficial for survival and reproduction.
- Repeated observations and systematic sessions: The 116-ape, five-group, 60-session Durham account provides a structured comparison for pre-feeding social contact.
- Species-level records: The comparative review brings together observations across apes and monkeys, but the authors caution that the record is likely incomplete.
- Captive and sanctuary evidence: These settings permit close observation but may not reproduce wild social conditions. Bonobo records are especially concentrated in such settings.
- Single reports or anecdotes: A lone observation can show possibility, not frequency or a species-wide rule.
- Absence of a record: “Not reported” means the behavior has not been documented in the available material; it does not prove that the species never does it.
For readers, the practical rule is to separate three statements: “the animals made this contact,” “the contact occurred in this social setting,” and “the contact evolved or functions for this reason.” The first may be directly observed, the second may be supported by a study design, and the third may remain provisional.
How do animal kisses compare with human kissing?
| Comparison point | Humans | Nonhuman examples |
|---|---|---|
| Physical form | Can include directed lip-to-lip contact and many culturally variable forms | Bonobos and chimpanzees show documented directed mouth-to-mouth contact; other apes and some monkeys have records. |
| Social meanings | May be romantic, sexual, familial, friendly, ceremonial, or habitual | Observed contexts include greeting, affiliation, reassurance, and conflict-related interaction; human romantic meaning is not established. |
| Food involvement | A kiss is normally distinguished from feeding | Comparative definitions exclude food transfer and premastication. |
| Cultural symbolism | Rules and meanings vary across societies | No evidence in these sources establishes human-like cultural symbolism in other species. |
| Evolutionary history | Can be studied through living behavior and cultural records | A 2026 model estimates a possible great-ape origin 21.5–16.9 million years ago, with substantial uncertainty. |
The strongest grounded comparison is behavioral: humans, bonobos, and chimpanzees can direct mouth-to-mouth contact toward a social partner. The comparison becomes speculative if it claims that the animals feel, intend, or symbolize exactly what a human does when kissing.

What should you say when describing an animal “kiss”?
Precise wording keeps a compelling observation from becoming a misleading claim.
- Say “documented mouth-to-mouth contact” when the physical behavior is clear but its function is uncertain.
- Say “affiliative” or “greeting contact” when the surrounding observation supports that context, as in the PBS NOVA account of captive bonobos.
- Say “pre-feeding friendly touch associated with peaceful feeding” for the Durham findings, rather than claiming that kissing caused tolerance.
- Say “rarely observed” for western lowland gorillas when referring to the review’s record, not “rare in every population.”
- Say “not yet documented in the reviewed wild observations” for bonobo kissing in the wild, rather than “bonobos never kiss in nature.”
- Do not call nose touching, licking, food transfer, or fighting an equivalent kiss without describing the distinct behavior.
Bottom line: do animals kiss like humans?
Some do something that fits a careful comparative definition of kissing: directed, same-species, non-aggressive mouth-to-mouth contact without food transfer. Bonobos and chimpanzees are documented examples, and records extend to most living great apes and some Afro-Eurasian monkeys. Bonobo contact is often described as friendly or a greeting in captive observations, while chimpanzee contact appears in several social settings, including pre-feeding interactions associated with more peaceful group feeding.
That resemblance is physical and contextual, not proof of identical psychology. The evolutionary estimate of a great-ape origin 21.5–16.9 million years ago is a provisional reconstruction, and the function and benefits of kissing remain unsettled. The most accurate answer is therefore qualified: animals can kiss in a behaviorally comparable sense, but a human kiss is not a universal template for what that contact means.
