No verified survey or report found for this article supports the claim that one in five CISOs take time off specifically to avoid Patch Tuesday. The available surveys discuss CISO workload and time off generally; they do not connect leave to Microsoft’s monthly security-update schedule.
What Patch Tuesday is—and why it can create work
Patch Tuesday commonly means the second Tuesday of each month, when Microsoft and Adobe regularly release batches of security patches, according to the Center for Internet Security (CIS). It is not a universal release day: vendors may publish updates on other schedules, including quarterly or ad hoc releases, as CIS explains in its patch-management guidance.
Patching means applying available updates to software such as operating systems, applications, browsers, mobile apps, and plugins. Security patches address known vulnerabilities. Once a patch is publicly announced, information about the vulnerability it fixes may also be available to attackers. Organizations therefore need to assess and apply relevant updates rather than treating the date itself as the whole process.
The operational work depends on the organization’s environment: teams need to know what hardware and software they manage, determine which updates affect those assets, and handle deployment. CIS recommends understanding an organization’s hardware and software inventory when establishing patch management. A monthly release can be one part of that work, but it does not define every organization’s patching calendar.

What published CISO time-off surveys actually found
Two reports provide context on the demands of the CISO role, but neither ties time off to Patch Tuesday.
| Reported finding | Survey details | What it does—and does not—show |
|---|---|---|
| 25% had taken no time off in the preceding 12 months; 40% had missed a family vacation because of work | Tessian/Censuswide survey of 300 CISOs in the United Kingdom and United States, reported by Infosecurity Magazine in 2021 | These are general leave and workload findings. They do not identify Patch Tuesday as a reason for taking or avoiding leave. |
| 43% said they could not take time off without creating substantial stress upon their return | Seemplicity survey of 300 US CISOs and equivalents, reported by Infosecurity Magazine on March 3, 2026 | This concerns the stress of taking time off generally, not a monthly patch-release schedule. |
The percentages describe different questions and survey samples, so they should not be combined into a single estimate. Most importantly, neither provides evidence for the headline’s specific “one in five” assertion.

What can be said about the one-in-five claim
The claim that a fifth of CISOs take time off to avoid Patch Tuesday remains unsupported by the sources available. Its original publisher, survey date, sample size, geography, and exact question are not established. Without those details, the statistic should not be presented as a verified finding.

In a May 19, 2025 article reproducing CSO coverage, Fortra associate director of security R&D Tyler Reguly said: “For those at the top of the food chain – CISOs and CSOs – this is a great Patch Tuesday to test your teams to see how well they know your environment.” That is advice about team readiness, not evidence that CISOs take leave to avoid the day.
