Do Not Disturb reduces interruptions by silencing or filtering notifications—not necessarily by blocking everything. You can usually choose which people, apps, alarms, or other alerts are still allowed, and schedules or modes such as Sleep and Driving can turn it on automatically.
What Do Not Disturb does—and what it doesn’t
Do Not Disturb is a notification-management mode. It changes which calls, messages, app alerts, alarms, and other interruptions can reach you, according to the exceptions you set. It is not a universal off switch: permitted notifications may still come through, and Android notes that critical system notifications can remain visible.

- Tap Focus, then choose Do Not Disturb.

Google also documents an option to allow a repeat caller when the same person calls twice within 15 minutes.
Android instructions and available controls vary by manufacturer and version. Google identifies some steps as applying to Android 14 and later, and notes that certain settings differ by device. Critical system notifications may still show even when Do Not Disturb is active.

Use automatic modes on Android
Android includes Bedtime, Driving, and custom modes. Bedtime can follow an existing or custom schedule, including an option to turn on while charging. Driving can be configured to activate while driving. Check the mode’s own settings as well as Do Not Disturb filters, since a mode or schedule may change notification behavior without a manual toggle.
Why does Do Not Disturb turn on by itself?
An automatic schedule or another active mode is a common reason notification behavior changes unexpectedly. On iPhone, open Settings > Focus > Do Not Disturb > Set a Schedule and review the configured triggers. Also check whether another Focus is active. On Android, review Do Not Disturb and the schedules for Bedtime, Driving, or any custom mode; menu locations vary by device.
