No. There is currently no completed clinical evidence showing that noise-cancelling headphones prevent postoperative nausea and vomiting (PONV). A registered randomized-trial protocol is testing the idea, but its results are not yet available. Headphones should be considered an optional comfort aid—not a replacement for prescribed anti-nausea prevention.

What the evidence actually shows

The directly relevant study is a planned, single-center randomized trial in adults having gynecologic laparoscopic surgery. It is designed to enroll 192 participants. One group will wear noise-cancelling headphones from induction of anesthesia until the operation ends; the control group will not wear headphones.

The trial’s primary outcome is nausea or vomiting during the first 48 hours after surgery. Researchers also plan to record symptom severity, rescue antiemetic use, pain, opioid-related outcomes, recovery quality, sleep, hospital stay, adverse events and patient satisfaction. The protocol itself states that direct evidence that noise-cancelling headphones reduce PONV is currently lacking.

Why a protocol is not a treatment result

A registered protocol describes what investigators intend to test. It does not show that the intervention works. No completed final-results publication for this headphone trial is established here, so the study cannot be used as proof that headphones prevent vomiting.

How to interpret the 21.74% versus 47.83% figures

The protocol reports pre-test planning observations of PONV in 21.74% of the headphone group and 47.83% of the control group. Those observations helped investigators plan the sample size. They are not the randomized trial’s final outcomes and may not represent what the full study will find.

Treating these planning figures as a demonstrated benefit would be misleading. Randomization, a prespecified analysis and complete follow-up are needed before researchers can estimate an intervention’s effect reliably.

What broader research says about non-drug approaches

Evidence for sound-based and other nonpharmacological approaches remains uncertain. A systematic review of auditory stimuli during general anesthesia included 16 studies but could not perform a meta-analysis because the studies assessed and reported PONV outcomes in substantially different ways.

A 2026 Bayesian network meta-analysis examined 54 randomized trials involving 8,275 participants and nine nonpharmacological interventions. It judged the certainty of most comparisons low or very low and did not establish noise-cancelling headphones as an effective PONV intervention.

These findings do not prove that headphones are useless. They show that existing studies are too limited, inconsistent or uncertain to support a preventive claim.

How headphones compare with established prevention

For patients at risk of PONV, clinicians can combine risk assessment, anesthetic choices and preventive medicines. A Cochrane network meta-analysis covering 585 trials and 97,516 participants found convincing preventive evidence for several antiemetic drugs, including aprepitant, ramosetron, granisetron, dexamethasone and ondansetron.

Option What is established Role in care
Noise-cancelling headphones Effect on PONV is unproven; the key randomized trial is still a protocol Optional comfort measure if the surgical team permits it
Antiemetic medicines Several drugs have stronger preventive evidence in large trial networks Use only under clinician direction, considering contraindications and interactions
Other non-drug interventions Evidence varies and is often low-certainty or difficult to combine May complement, but should not replace, a medical prevention plan

Evidence certainty, timing, target outcome and practical feasibility matter when comparing options. A device studied during anesthesia may not have the same effect as an intervention used in recovery, and an approach that affects anxiety, pain or sleep is not automatically proven to prevent vomiting.

Should you bring headphones to surgery?

You may ask your hospital whether you can bring personal headphones for comfort before anesthesia or after you wake up. Do not assume they can be worn during the operation. Anesthesia staff need access to your ears, face and monitoring equipment, and each facility has its own infection-control and equipment rules.

Questions to ask your care team

  • Can I use headphones while waiting for anesthesia or in the recovery area?
  • Will the device interfere with monitors, airway equipment or staff communication?
  • What is my personal risk of PONV?
  • Which preventive medicines or anesthetic adjustments are appropriate for me?
  • What should I do if nausea develops after discharge?

Bring a charged device only if the facility allows it, and keep volume low enough to hear instructions. Never delay reporting nausea, retching or vomiting because you are trying a device.

Are headphones a substitute for anti-nausea medicine?

No. The available evidence does not support replacing clinician-directed prophylaxis with headphones. If you have previously experienced PONV, motion sickness, migraine-related nausea or medication sensitivity, tell the anesthesiologist and surgeon before the procedure. They can tailor prevention and arrange rescue treatment if symptoms occur.

What remains unknown

The planned trial may clarify whether wearing noise-cancelling headphones throughout anesthesia changes 48-hour PONV rates in gynecologic laparoscopic surgery. Its findings may not apply to other operations, age groups, anesthesia techniques or headphone designs. Even a positive result would need confirmation in other settings before the intervention could be considered broadly established.

Until completed results are reported, the defensible conclusion is narrow: headphones might improve the perioperative experience for some people, but they have not been shown to prevent postoperative vomiting.
