Yes, mosquitoes can be more attracted to some people than others, but there is no proven “mosquito magnet” habit you can adopt or stop to reset your natural attractiveness. A 2022 controlled study of Aedes aegypti found stable differences in human attractiveness and associated higher attraction with several skin-derived carboxylic acids. Mosquitoes also track exhaled carbon dioxide, body heat and odor; a 2024 experiment found that thermal infrared can add to those cues for this species.
You cannot reliably change your baseline skin odor, but you can substantially reduce exposure. Use an EPA-registered repellent as directed, cover skin with loose clothing, use permethrin-treated clothing or gear correctly, screen living spaces and remove standing water every week.
What “prefers some people” means
Preference is a measurable choice in a test, not a permanent ranking of every person in every yard. Mosquito attraction depends on the species, the environment, the cues available and the individual mosquito. The strongest human evidence comes from controlled laboratory work with Aedes aegypti, so it should not be generalized to all mosquito species or all outdoor situations.

1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsIn everyday life, the number of bites you receive reflects several things at once: how attractive you are to the local species, how much time you spend where mosquitoes are active, which body areas are exposed, whether you use repellent or treated clothing, and how readily you notice or react to bites. A person can appear to be bitten more often without having a universally higher biological attractiveness.

What the 2022 human-attractiveness study found
A large, repeated comparison
De Obaldia and colleagues profiled skin odor from 64 human subjects and repeatedly tested mosquito choices. The work included more than 2,330 behavioral trials conducted on 174 experimental days over 3.1 years. A separate validation cohort included 56 new subjects. Repeated testing is important: the authors reported stable differences among people under their controlled conditions rather than a one-off result from a single afternoon.
Carboxylic acids were associated with higher attraction
The people that attracted more mosquitoes had higher levels of several skin-derived carboxylic acids. This is an association between an odor profile and mosquito behavior, not proof that one acid acts as a universal attractant or that changing one chemical would make someone less attractive. Human odor is a blend. The study also reported an individual with high carboxylic-acid levels who was only weakly attractive, showing why a single-compound explanation is inadequate.
What the study cannot tell you
- It does not provide a universal ranking of people that applies to every mosquito species.
- It does not establish how common a highly attractive odor profile is in the wider population.
- It does not show that a diet, soap, supplement or other routine can reliably change your baseline attractiveness.
- It does not mean that a person who attracts more mosquitoes in a laboratory will receive the most bites in every outdoor setting.
How mosquitoes find a person
Exhaled carbon dioxide
Breathing releases carbon dioxide, which helps mosquitoes detect a potential host at a distance. Carbon dioxide is one part of a sequence: it can direct a mosquito toward an area, after which closer-range cues help it decide where to land.
Skin odor
Skin chemicals and the microbial processes that shape them create an odor signature. The 2022 findings indicate that differences in this chemistry can make some people more attractive to Aedes aegypti under test conditions. Odor is not a single scent, and the evidence does not support a simple “wash with this product” solution.

Body heat
Mosquitoes can sense nearby warmth. Heat becomes especially useful at close range, when a mosquito is selecting a landing site after following carbon dioxide and odor.
Thermal infrared in the 2024 experiment
An NIH summary of 2024 research describes Aedes aegypti using skin odor and exhaled carbon dioxide, sensing body heat and also detecting thermal infrared. Infrared alone did not trigger host-seeking in the reported experiment. When infrared was added to odor and carbon dioxide, the number of mosquitoes drawn to a surface to probe doubled. This result is specific to the species and experimental setup; it is not evidence that infrared contributes in the same way for every mosquito.
Why do mosquitoes always bite me?
Your baseline odor may be one factor
If the local mosquitoes respond strongly to your odor blend, you may be selected more often than another person standing nearby. The controlled study supports that possibility, but it does not identify a practical method for permanently changing the blend.
You may have more exposure
Time outdoors at dawn, dusk or in shaded, humid areas can increase encounters. Bare ankles, arms and neck expose more landing surfaces than loose, covering clothing. Sitting near vegetation or water-holding containers can also put you closer to breeding or resting sites. These exposure differences can outweigh modest differences in innate attraction.

You may notice bites more
People vary in how strongly they react to mosquito saliva and how quickly they notice an itchy spot. Counting visible or itchy bites is therefore not a direct measurement of how many times mosquitoes attempted to feed.
The species and setting can change the result
A preference measured for Aedes aegypti in a laboratory may not predict behavior from another species in your region. Wind, temperature, clothing, repellent, nearby hosts and the number of mosquitoes all change what happens outdoors.
Are people with Type O blood more attractive to mosquitoes?
That explanation is not established. China’s Centers for Disease Control and Prevention states that there is currently no evidence that blood type changes mosquito attractiveness. Treat blood type as an unproven claim, not as the reason one person is bitten more than another.

| Active ingredient | What to check |
|---|---|
| DEET | Use the concentration and reapplication instructions on the label; higher concentration generally lasts longer. |
| Picaridin | Follow the registered product’s directions for skin application and duration. |
| IR3535 | Use only as directed for the labeled age group and application areas. |
| Oil of lemon eucalyptus (OLE) | Check the label carefully; CDC says not to use OLE products on children under 3. |
| Para-menthane-3,8-diol (PMD) | CDC says not to use PMD products on children under 3; follow the product label. |
| 2-undecanone | Use an EPA-registered formulation and obey its label directions. |
CDC explicitly says, “We do not know the effectiveness of non-EPA registered insect repellents, including some natural repellents.” A “natural” label does not establish protection. Do not apply a product more often or in larger amounts than its label allows, and do not put repellent on cuts, irritated skin or under clothing unless the label specifically directs it.
2. Cover exposed skin
Wear loose-fitting long-sleeved shirts, long pants and socks when mosquitoes are active. Loose fabric is preferable to tight fabric because it leaves less skin pressed directly against the material. Tuck or overlap clothing where practical, especially around ankles and waistbands.
3. Use permethrin-treated clothing and gear correctly
Permethrin-treated clothing, tents, screens and other gear can add a barrier for outdoor activities. These products are for clothing or equipment, not direct application to skin. Use commercially treated items or treat gear only according to the product instructions, including washing and retreatment directions. Continue using a skin repellent on exposed skin when the label and your situation call for it.

4. Improve indoor barriers
- Repair or install tight-fitting window and door screens.
- Use air conditioning where available to reduce the need to keep windows open.
- Keep doors closed or screened, particularly during periods of mosquito activity.
- Use a properly fitted mosquito net for a stroller, baby carrier or sleeping area when that context requires it.
5. Remove breeding water every week
CDC recommends weekly emptying, scrubbing, turning over, covering or discarding items that hold water. Check buckets, plant saucers, toys, gutters, birdbaths, tarps, wheelbarrows and any other container outdoors. Emptying is not always enough when eggs or larvae cling to a surface, so scrub containers before refilling them. Cover water-storage containers tightly and discard items that cannot be drained or covered.

How to choose a repellent for your situation
There is no single duration that applies to every formulation. CDC notes that protection time varies with the product, mosquito species, temperature, activity, perspiration, water exposure and rubbing. The Yellow Book explains that higher active-ingredient concentrations generally provide longer protection, but the label remains the controlling instruction.
| Your situation | Selection checklist |
|---|---|
| Routine yard use | EPA registration, an ingredient you can apply comfortably, and a label interval that fits the time you will be outside. |
| Heavy exercise or sweating | Read water- and sweat-related directions; plan for the label’s reapplication instructions rather than assuming the original application lasts all day. |
| Swimming or frequent water exposure | Check whether the label requires reapplication after water exposure and combine repellent with covering clothing. |
| Travel to a mosquito-heavy area | Pack an EPA-registered skin repellent, long clothing and treated gear when appropriate; verify age restrictions before departure. |
| Children | Follow the age and application instructions exactly. Do not use OLE or PMD products on children under 3, according to CDC guidance. |
If you are still getting bitten
- Check the label and timing. Confirm that the product is EPA-registered, used on the correct body areas and reapplied only at the stated interval.
- Look for removal factors. Sweating, swimming, toweling, clothing rubbing and high heat can reduce the practical duration of protection.
- Cover gaps. Add socks, loose pants, sleeves or treated gear to areas that remain exposed.
- Inspect the immediate area. Empty and scrub water-holding containers weekly, repair screens and reduce time beside dense vegetation or stagnant water.
- Consider the species and time of day. A product and routine that worked in one location may not perform identically against a different species or under different conditions.
No CDC measure guarantees that you will receive zero bites. The goal is to reduce the number of encounters and feeding attempts by combining chemical protection, physical barriers and habitat management.
Claims that remain unproven
- Blood type as a definitive explanation: China CDC reports no current evidence that blood type determines attractiveness.
- A single “mosquito-attracting” chemical: Carboxylic acids were associated with attraction in one study, but odor blends vary and one highly acidic profile was weakly attractive.
- A reliable odor-reset routine: The evidence does not establish that changing soap, diet or another daily habit will permanently lower baseline attractiveness.
- Any non-registered natural repellent as equivalent protection: CDC says effectiveness is unknown for non-EPA-registered repellents.
- Infrared as a universal mosquito sense: The 2024 result concerns Aedes aegypti in a specific experiment and should not be extended to every species or environment.
The practical takeaway
Some people really are more attractive to mosquitoes under controlled conditions, probably because of differences in their combined odor profile and because mosquitoes integrate odor, carbon dioxide and heat. That finding does not give you a proven way to alter your natural attractiveness, and blood type is not an established explanation. Use an EPA-registered repellent according to its label, cover skin, treat clothing or gear when appropriate, screen indoor spaces and remove standing water every week. Those are the changes with clear, actionable guidance even when the biology of individual attractiveness remains complex.
