Official Minecraft Bedrock Dedicated Server (BDS) does not support Bukkit-, Spigot-, Paper-, or Purpur-style plugins. You cannot copy a Java .jar into a BDS plugins folder and expect it to load. Microsoft’s supported extension model is behavior packs, resource packs, JavaScript Script APIs, and normal server configuration.

If you need a traditional plugin ecosystem, use software designed for plugins: PocketMine-MP for PHP plugins, Endstone for Python or C++ plugins on a BDS-based platform, or a Java server with Geyser so Bedrock players can connect. Each option changes the server architecture and, in some cases, vanilla feature compatibility.

The short answer: official BDS is not a Bukkit-style plugin server

When administrators ask whether a Bedrock server supports plugins, they usually mean a drop-in system like Bukkit or Paper: download a plugin file, place it in a plugins directory, restart the server, and configure the plugin. Official Bedrock Dedicated Server does not document or provide that loader.

Microsoft’s BDS documentation describes three supported ways to extend or operate a world:

#1 Best Overall
Minecraft | Java & Bedrock Deluxe Collection | Windows Digital Code
  • DELUXE COLLECTION — Includes Minecraft: Java & Bedrock Edition, three Bedrock add-ons, three exclusive Character Creator items, and 700 Minecoins.
  • CREATE YOUR WORLD — Build whatever you imagine in an infinite world that’s unique in every playthrough.
  • EXPLORE AND CRAFT — Discover biomes, resources, and mobs, then craft your way through a sandbox world filled with surprises.
  • SURVIVE THE ADVENTURE — Face mysterious foes, travel across exciting landscapes, and venture into perilous dimensions.
  • PLAY TOGETHER — Play cross-platform with friends in Bedrock Edition on console, mobile, and PC, or join community servers in Java Edition on PC, Mac, and Linux. Online console multiplayer requires a platform-specific subscription (sold separately).
  • Behavior packs for data-driven gameplay changes.
  • Resource packs for client-side assets and presentation.
  • JavaScript Script APIs, including modules such as @minecraft/server and @minecraft/server-ui.

Files such as server.properties, allowlists, ports, and world settings control operation, but they are configuration surfaces rather than plugin APIs. Additional scripting APIs are labeled Beta or experimental by Microsoft, so an update can change or remove an API. The scripting guidance also does not apply to Realms.

That distinction matters: a behavior pack may add or change content, but calling it a “plugin” can give you the wrong expectations about installation, permissions, compatibility, and available hooks.

What you can use on an official Bedrock Dedicated Server

Behavior packs

Behavior packs are the normal official route for changing entities, items, recipes, loot, rules, and other data-driven behavior. They are installed as Bedrock content rather than as server binaries. A pack is tied to a world and its manifest declares the pack identity and dependencies. Players may also need the associated resource pack when the change includes custom models, textures, sounds, or user-interface assets.

Behavior packs are a good fit when your goal is a custom survival experience, altered mob behavior, new recipes, or a curated adventure map. They do not provide the same unrestricted server hooks as a Java plugin. A pack cannot be assumed to expose every internal event, database integration, or administrative command that a Bukkit plugin offers.

Resource packs

Resource packs change how content is presented: textures, geometry, sounds, fonts, and other assets. They can accompany a behavior pack, but they do not by themselves implement server logic. If a proposed “plugin” only changes appearance, a resource pack is usually the appropriate mechanism.

JavaScript Script API

Microsoft lists several Script API modules for Bedrock development, including @minecraft/server, @minecraft/server-ui, @minecraft/server-admin, @minecraft/server-editor, and GameTest-related modules. Scripts can react to supported events, inspect and modify supported game objects, show forms, and automate server tasks within the API surface.

  • access new mini games and game modes through servers

The important qualification is stability. Microsoft’s BDS scripting article says that Bedrock Dedicated Server supports JavaScript APIs, including additional, more powerful experimental APIs. Those additional APIs are Beta or experimental and may change or be removed. Treat a script project as version-sensitive software: test it against the exact Minecraft server build you plan to run, keep backups, and expect to update code after game updates.

Operational configuration

The BDS configuration file, allowlists, network ports, world settings, and related server options are supported administration tools. They determine who can connect and how the server runs, but they do not load third-party plugin code. Changing a setting in server.properties cannot create a Bukkit-compatible plugin system.

Why Java plugin files do not work on BDS

Bukkit, Spigot, Paper, and Purpur plugins are Java programs compiled against those servers’ APIs. Official BDS is a different server implementation with a different runtime and extension model. It does not include the Java plugin loader, the Bukkit event system, or the Java server classes those .jar files expect.

Consequently, copying a .jar into a folder named plugins does not install anything. At best, BDS ignores the file; at worst, an administrator mistakes an unrelated error for a plugin problem. Renaming a file, changing its extension, or adding a folder cannot bridge the API and runtime differences.

Be cautious with lists titled “Bedrock plugins.” The term can refer to PocketMine-MP plugins, Nukkit-derived software, Endstone extensions, Java servers accepting Bedrock clients, or add-ons for official BDS. Check which server software a listing targets before downloading it. A plugin made for one platform is not automatically portable to another.

PocketMine-MP: real plugins, different vanilla behavior

PocketMine-MP is PHP server software for Bedrock that documents a plugin API. Plugins are commonly distributed as .phar files and loaded from the server’s plugins directory. Its documentation identifies Poggit as a release source for plugins, and a plugin’s plugin.yml declares the API versions it supports.

  • Play on the go in handheld or tabletop modes
  • Includes Super Mario Mash-Up, Natural Texture Pack, Biome Settlers Skin Pack, Battle & Beasts Skin Pack, Campfire Tales Skin Pack; Compatible with Nintendo Switch only

How the PocketMine plugin workflow works

  1. Install a PocketMine-MP build that matches the Minecraft client version your players use.
  2. Obtain a plugin release intended for that PocketMine API and server version.
  3. Place the plugin’s .phar file in the PocketMine plugins directory.
  4. Start or restart the server and read the console output for load messages, dependency errors, or API-version refusal.
  5. Configure the plugin using the files it creates, then test permissions and commands with a non-administrator account.

PocketMine refuses plugins whose declared API is incompatible. That protection is useful, but it also means a plugin that worked on an older release may need an update before it can load on a newer one. The documentation result identified PocketMine API release 5.44.4; because that number is release-sensitive, verify the current release and supported Minecraft version before deployment.

The compatibility cost

PocketMine’s own documentation warns that it is not vanilla server software. It lacks substantial vanilla behavior, including vanilla world generation, redstone, and mob AI. A plugin-rich PocketMine server can therefore be excellent for minigames, commands, permissions, economies, or custom experiences while still being a poor replacement for a technically accurate vanilla survival world.

Before migrating, identify the features your players consider non-negotiable. If redstone contraptions, vanilla terrain generation, or authentic mob behavior are central to the world, test a representative copy rather than assuming plugin availability outweighs the parity gap.

Endstone: a BDS-based third-party plugin platform

Endstone is third-party server software based on Bedrock Dedicated Server concepts and offers Python and C++ plugin APIs. Its documentation provides installation paths using pip and Docker and describes an API modeled in part on the Bukkit/Paper approach.

When Endstone is a sensible choice

Endstone targets administrators who want to stay closer to a BDS-based core while gaining native plugin-style extension points. Python can make automation and application integration approachable, while C++ can support lower-level or performance-sensitive extensions. This is a different proposition from installing a pack on official BDS: you are adopting an alternative server platform.

What to verify before production

  • The Endstone release’s supported Minecraft version.
  • The plugin API version and whether a plugin targets Python, C++, or both.
  • Whether the functions you need are implemented in the current build.
  • How the project handles updates, breaking changes, and production support.
  • Backup, rollback, and Docker or pip deployment procedures for your environment.

Endstone is under active development. Treat compatibility claims as version-specific, not permanent guarantees. A server that works on one Endstone and Minecraft combination may require plugin or configuration changes after an update.

Geyser: use Java plugins while Bedrock players connect

Geyser is a bridge between Minecraft: Bedrock Edition and Minecraft: Java Edition. It does not add Bukkit plugins to official BDS. Instead, it lets Bedrock clients communicate with a Java server, where Java plugins run normally.

The architecture

  1. Run a Java server implementation that supports the plugins you need, such as Paper or Spigot.
  2. Install the Geyser distribution appropriate for that server; the Geyser-Spigot build belongs in the Java server’s plugins folder.
  3. Configure the bridge and network ports according to the current Geyser documentation.
  4. Test Java and Bedrock clients separately, then test permissions, commands, inventories, forms, and custom mechanics with both editions.

Geyser also provides mod and standalone distributions. Floodgate can allow Bedrock players to join without a paid Java account, subject to the current Geyser documentation and your server’s authentication setup. Bridge compatibility is an additional maintenance layer: Minecraft updates, Java plugins, and Geyser releases must remain compatible.

What this option does and does not preserve

You gain access to the broad Java plugin ecosystem, but you are no longer running an official Bedrock Dedicated Server. Java mechanics remain the authoritative server behavior, and some Bedrock controls or visual features may not map perfectly. Test the specific plugins that matter to your community instead of assuming every Java plugin is transparent to Bedrock users.

Practical decision process

Stay with official BDS when vanilla fidelity is the priority

Choose official BDS when you need Microsoft’s Bedrock server behavior and are comfortable building with behavior packs, resource packs, and JavaScript APIs. Keep scripts narrowly scoped, document the Minecraft build they target, and test after every update. This route avoids switching server software but cannot provide a Bukkit-style plugin catalog.

Choose PocketMine-MP for a PHP plugin ecosystem

PocketMine-MP fits communities that value plugin-driven commands and game modes more than complete vanilla parity. Plan a feature audit before migration, especially for redstone, world generation, and mob AI. Use only releases whose API declarations match your server.

Choose Endstone for Python or C++ on a BDS-oriented platform

Endstone is appropriate when its current API covers your required hooks and your team accepts third-party platform churn. Pin tested versions, stage updates, and keep a rollback copy of both the world and plugin environment.

Choose Java plus Geyser for mature Java plugins

This is the clearest route when an essential feature exists only as a Java plugin. It requires Java-server administration, bridge configuration, and cross-edition testing, but it avoids pretending that a Java .jar can run inside official BDS.

Troubleshooting common misconceptions

“The plugin is in the folder, but nothing happens.”

Check the target software first. A .jar belongs to a compatible Java server, a PocketMine plugin is normally a .phar, and official BDS expects packs or supported script modules. The folder name alone does not determine compatibility.

“A behavior pack is called a plugin in the download description.”

Read the manifest and installation instructions. If it is a Bedrock pack, enable it for the intended world and add any required resource pack. Do not place it in a Java server’s plugin directory.

“The script worked until a Minecraft update.”

Review the module versions and whether the script uses an experimental API. Re-test on a copy of the world, check current Microsoft documentation, and update or remove calls that changed. Keep a known-good server build available for rollback.

“A Bedrock player cannot use a Java plugin feature through Geyser.”

Confirm that the Java server plugin itself works for Java clients, then check Geyser’s current compatibility notes. Some Java-specific interfaces, menus, or mechanics need a Bedrock-aware configuration or may not translate exactly.

Maintenance rules for 2026

Compatibility is the moving part of every option. Minecraft updates can alter Script APIs, Bedrock protocol behavior, Java server interfaces, bridge mappings, and third-party plugin APIs. Record the Minecraft version, server software version, API version, and plugin versions for each production deployment.

  • Test updates on a cloned world before changing the live server.
  • Back up worlds, configuration, packs, scripts, and plugin files together.
  • Read release notes for breaking API changes, not only the headline Minecraft version.
  • Keep plugins and scripts from trusted release channels and remove abandoned extensions.
  • Use a staged rollout so a failed update does not destroy the only copy of a world.

The central rule remains simple: official BDS supports packs, scripts, and configuration; plugin loaders belong to alternative server platforms. Select the platform based on the behavior you must preserve and the extension language or ecosystem you actually need.
