Yes. A laptop adapter or its cable can become damaged or stop working, but Microsoft, Apple, and Dell do not give a universal lifespan in years. Replace an adapter based on its condition and compatibility—not simply its age. If you see fraying, exposed wires, damaged pins or casing, or hear popping, stop using it. If a laptop will not charge, check the outlet and connections before assuming the adapter is at fault.
How long should a laptop adapter last?
There is no standard lifespan or average number of years established by the official Microsoft, Apple, and Dell support guidance cited here. Those sources explain how to handle adapters, identify damage, troubleshoot charging, and choose replacements, but they do not say that a working adapter should be replaced after a set period. The condition of the adapter, cable, and connectors matters more than age alone.
What signs mean an adapter may be unsafe or failing?
Stop using an adapter or cable if you find physical damage or notice abnormal sounds or operation. Apple’s guidance is explicit: “If your power adapter, AC wall adapter or AC power cable has been damaged, stop using it.” (Apple Support, published June 1, 2026.)
- Frayed, cut, or exposed wiring, or a cable with a visibly worn outer layer.
- Bent, broken, missing, or loose plug prongs or connector pins.
- A loose connection, damaged or discoloured casing, or pins that do not fit securely.
- Popping sounds, buzzing, or sparking from somewhere other than the plug blades.
- An adapter that no longer powers the laptop, or signs of abnormal overheating.
Dell warns that damaged, frayed, or exposed adapter equipment can cause electric shock. Do not touch a damaged section, and do not open, repair, or test the adapter’s internals yourself. If a connection is loose, disconnect it and inspect the cable and connector for damage; a damaged cable should be replaced, not kept in use. See Dell’s adapter damage guidance.

If a plug prong is stuck in the outlet
Do not touch or try to remove a broken or stuck prong, and do not use that outlet. Apple advises isolating power at the circuit breaker if you can do so safely; otherwise, contact a qualified electrician.
How to care for a laptop adapter
- Unplug by the plug or connector. Hold the connector when disconnecting it; pulling the cable strains the joints.
- Store the cable without tight wraps or twists. Tight wrapping and pulling on the cord can contribute to damage.
- Give the adapter airflow. Keep it in a ventilated space rather than covering or enclosing it. Apple notes that an adapter with poor ventilation may turn off to prevent overheating.
- Keep connectors and ports clean and dry. Clear away debris and do not charge when moisture is present.
- Inspect it periodically. Look over the cable, plug, connector pins, and casing. Treat damage as a replacement or service issue, not an invitation to repair the adapter internally.

What to check when a laptop will not charge
A laptop that is plugged in but not charging does not prove the adapter has failed. Other possible causes include a bad outlet, battery hardware, debris or damage in the charging port, a software or driver issue, or a power setting. Dell describes these possibilities in its charging troubleshooting guidance.

- Reseat and inspect the connections. Disconnect and reconnect the adapter at the outlet and laptop. Check the cable, plug, and laptop port for damage or debris. If the adapter or cable is visibly damaged, stop using it rather than continuing tests.
- Try a known compatible adapter if available. Use one approved for the laptop model. Microsoft suggests testing a different Surface power supply; a USB-C Power Delivery charger is an option only for Surface models that support charging that way. - Use the laptop maker’s diagnostics if charging still fails. Follow the instructions for that model’s battery, port, software, BIOS, or service checks. On Dell systems, an adapter status of “Unknown” can point to the adapter, DC-in port, or motherboard charging circuit; the battery may also be involved. Do not apply a reset procedure to every laptop. Microsoft’s Surface-specific reset, for example, is to unplug the power supply and connected USB accessories, wait at least 10 seconds, and reconnect them. Use that procedure for Surface as directed by Microsoft, not as a universal laptop fix.

How to choose a compatible replacement
Check the exact laptop model before buying. Confirm the required wattage, connector, and—if charging over USB-C—the laptop’s support for USB-C Power Delivery and the charger’s adequate power output. A charger with too little power may charge slowly, produce warnings, or fail to keep up under load. Dell advises checking the computer manual and cautions that USB-C compatibility should not be assumed for every laptop.
- Match the replacement to the laptop’s exact model and power requirements.
- Verify the physical connector and any required charging protocol.
- Where the manufacturer offers an approved replacement, check that it is intended for your model and available in your region. Microsoft recommends genuine or Microsoft-licensed accessories for Surface.
- Do not assume that any USB-C charger—or any charger described as “universal”—will work with your laptop.
A useful search phrase is “laptop power adapter compatible with your laptop model,” but verify the specifications against the manufacturer’s documentation before ordering.
