Yes—every iPad has built-in Wi‑Fi. Do iPads have built-in WiFi? They can connect to an available Wi‑Fi network without an iPad cellular subscription. The “Wi‑Fi” and “Wi‑Fi + Cellular” labels distinguish whether the iPad can also use a carrier’s mobile data network; cellular service is not included just because a model supports it.
That means a Wi‑Fi-only iPad can still browse, stream, and use online apps wherever it can join Wi‑Fi. If you need the iPad itself to connect where Wi‑Fi is unavailable, a compatible Wi‑Fi + Cellular model and a carrier data plan may be appropriate.
How to connect an iPad to Wi‑Fi
Use the iPad’s Settings app to join a wireless network:

Wi‑Fi versus Wi‑Fi + Cellular
Both configurations connect to Wi‑Fi. The difference matters when you are away from a usable Wi‑Fi network.
| Question | Wi‑Fi model | Wi‑Fi + Cellular model |
|---|---|---|
| Can it connect to Wi‑Fi? | Yes. | Yes. |
| Can it use carrier data directly? | No. It needs Wi‑Fi or another internet route, such as a hotspot. | Yes, after compatible cellular service is set up. |
| Is an iPad cellular plan required? | No, not for Wi‑Fi access. | A carrier data plan is required to use cellular data; availability and charges depend on carrier and region. |
| What should guide the choice? | Choose this if trusted Wi‑Fi or a separate hotspot usually meets your needs. | Consider it if you need the iPad itself online in places without Wi‑Fi and the device and service costs are worthwhile. |
A hotspot is a separate internet path: for example, another device may share its cellular connection with the iPad. It does not turn a Wi‑Fi-only iPad into a cellular model.

What Connectivity Assist does
On Wi‑Fi + Cellular iPads, Connectivity Assist may use cellular data alongside Wi‑Fi when the Wi‑Fi connection is weak, busy, or not connected to the internet. That can use your carrier data and may result in charges. If you want to avoid cellular use while connected to Wi‑Fi, you can turn the feature off. Apple describes this behavior in its internet connection guide.
Cellular iPads are not ordinary phones
Wi‑Fi + Cellular means mobile data capability, not standard standalone cellular phone service. Apple states that these models support cellular data transmission only. Where supported, you can make calls using Wi‑Fi Calling and an iPhone; that is different from treating the iPad as a regular phone. See Apple’s cellular settings guide.

Check the exact model, region, and SIM support
Wi‑Fi standards, cellular bands, supported carriers, and SIM arrangements vary by generation and market. For example, Apple lists Wi‑Fi 6 (802.11ax) with 2×2 MIMO for the iPad (A16), while 5G and LTE are specified for its Wi‑Fi + Cellular configuration. Those details apply to that model, not automatically to every iPad. Apple’s iPad technical specifications and model identification page help distinguish model variants.
Some recent cellular iPad families purchased worldwide use eSIM only and have no physical SIM tray: iPad (A16) Wi‑Fi + Cellular and later, iPad Pro (M4) Wi‑Fi + Cellular and later, iPad Air (M2) Wi‑Fi + Cellular and later, and iPad mini (A17 Pro) Wi‑Fi + Cellular models. Exact model and carrier support still matter, so check compatibility before buying or activating service. Apple explains the requirements in its cellular setup instructions.
