A 2026 field campaign in central Texas found frequent formation of ultrafine atmospheric particles during a heatwave, including particles as small as 3 nanometres. It did not track deaths or show that the particles made heat more dangerous to people. The finding points to a possible health question, not a demonstrated cause of heatwave mortality.
Did the Texas heatwave produce more atmospheric nanoparticles?
Researchers reported new-particle-formation events on 15 of 27 campaign days (56%), using their study-specific definition: apparent formation and growth of particles smaller than 10 nm, alongside a concentration of 3-to-25-nm particles above 6,000 cm−3. The highest reported nucleation-mode concentration exceeded 20,000 cm−3. These are observations from one central Texas campaign, not typical values for heatwaves generally. Chemistry World reports that measurements took place over about a month on the Texas A&M campus, with some of the strongest particle formation occurring above 30°C.
The campaign measured particle chemistry down to 3 nm and found that nucleation-mode particles were predominantly multifunctional organic acids, according to the study summary. The reported sources of those acids include oxidation of biogenic compounds such as isoprene and pinenes, as well as anthropogenic compounds such as traffic-related aromatics. Small amounts of sulfuric acid may also have been present. The underlying paper is identified as R. Zhang et al., Science 391 (2026), DOI 10.1126/science.ady5192.
How might organic acids form particles in hot air?
The proposed explanation is that multifunctional organic acids can associate through hydrogen bonds and spontaneously self-assemble into supramolecular nanoparticles. The researchers also used quantum-chemical calculations to investigate this mechanism. This offers a possible explanation for particle formation at high temperatures, when common expectations based on the volatility of compounds might suggest that new particles would be difficult to form.

The observations and the mechanism are distinct kinds of evidence: the campaign measured particle formation and composition, while self-assembly is the proposed explanation for how those particles formed. The available account does not establish that this mechanism operates in every heatwave or location. Chemistry World quotes Carnegie Mellon University researcher Hamish Gordon: “It’s exciting that they are seeing new particle formation so often at such high temperatures.”
Could these particles make heatwaves deadlier?
That has not been demonstrated. The Texas campaign measured atmospheric particles; it was not a controlled human-exposure study or an epidemiological analysis of deaths. It therefore cannot show that nanoparticles worsened people’s health during the heatwave or increased its death toll. Texas A&M University researcher Renyi Zhang told Chemistry World: “More work needs to be done on how heat combined with these ultrafine particles impacts human health.”

A separate 2021 analysis of 732 locations in 43 countries over 1991–2018 estimated that 37.0% (range 20.5–76.3%) of warm-season heat-related deaths were attributable to human-induced climate change. That estimate concerns climate change’s contribution to heat mortality; it is not evidence that nanoparticles caused deaths. The study was published in Nature Climate Change.

What remains uncertain?
- Health effects: The available findings do not establish whether exposure to these particles, combined with heat, causes measurable harm or contributes to mortality.
- How widespread the phenomenon is: The reported frequency comes from one central Texas campaign, not a global survey of heatwaves.
- Climate effects: The impact of these very small organic particles on cloud formation and climate remains uncertain; they may not readily take up water, according to Chemistry World.
- Practical protection: The findings do not establish that consumer air-quality monitors detect 3-nm particles or that a particular mask prevents any hypothesized health effect.
