Sometimes, but “Gemini automation” can mean three different features. Gemini scheduled actions prepare recurring chat responses in the background and can notify you while an Android phone is locked, subject to notification settings. Gemini Spark schedules are separate workflows; Google explicitly warns that a Spark schedule may run while you are offline. A request you make to Gemini from a locked Android phone can work for supported tasks, but personal-content requests may require you to unlock. Google’s scheduled-actions documentation does not explicitly promise that the phone itself can be offline when a chat action executes.
The short answer by feature
Do not treat a lock-screen notification, a background response and an offline workflow as the same thing. Google documents different behavior for scheduled actions in Gemini chats, Gemini Spark schedules and on-demand requests made from an Android lock screen.

A scheduled action is a recurring prompt in a Gemini chat. You can set it to run daily, weekly or monthly, producing something such as a digest or another repeatable response. Gemini prepares the content in the background so it is ready by the scheduled time, rather than waiting for you to open the app at that exact moment.

Timing depends on your account. Without a Google AI plan, Google says preparation may happen up to several hours before delivery. With a Google AI plan, preparation occurs within the hour before delivery. That lead time matters for fast-changing information: a stock price or other live value can be stale by the time the notification arrives because the response was prepared earlier.
What a locked phone changes
When the response is ready, Gemini sends a notification in the mobile app. Google’s wording is conditional: the notification may appear while your device is locked, depending on notification settings. A locked screen therefore affects how you see the result, not necessarily whether Gemini prepared it. If Android blocks Gemini notifications or hides their content on the lock screen, the action can complete without an immediately visible alert.
What Google does not promise about offline execution
The scheduled-actions help page describes background preparation and notification delivery, but it does not explicitly say that the phone can be disconnected from the internet at the scheduled moment. It also does not say that the handset must remain unlocked. The supportable conclusion is narrower: Gemini can prepare a scheduled response in the background, and its notification may reach a locked phone when settings allow it. Do not advertise ordinary chat scheduled actions as guaranteed offline automations.

Before troubleshooting a missed digest, check the account and feature prerequisites documented by Google.

- Sign in to Gemini with a personal Google Account or an eligible work or school Google Workspace account.
- Turn on Keep Activity. Scheduled actions require it.
- Use a connected service when the prompt depends on another app, such as Google Workspace. That app must be connected to Gemini.
- Stay within the documented maximum of 10 active scheduled actions.
- Remember that availability is rolling out to personal accounts, so the feature may not yet appear for every user.
How to check an action
- Open the Gemini mobile app and open your profile menu.
- Select Scheduled actions to view existing schedules and create, edit or remove one.
- Confirm the recurrence (daily, weekly or monthly), the prompt and its delivery time.
- For any prompt that uses another app, open the connected-app settings and verify that service is still linked.
- In Android notification settings, allow Gemini notifications and choose whether notification content is shown on the lock screen. Menu names vary by Android version and device manufacturer.
These checks address eligibility, scheduling and notification visibility. They do not turn a scheduled action into a documented offline guarantee.
Gemini Spark schedules are a separate automation system
Gemini Spark schedules attach timing or conditions to tasks and workflows. They are not another name for a recurring prompt in a Gemini chat. That difference is important because Google gives Spark a specific offline warning that it does not give on the scheduled-actions page.
Google states: “If a schedule runs when you’re offline, you may not be able to stop Gemini from completing an unintended action.” In practical terms, a Spark workflow can be triggered while you are offline, and your lack of connection or attention may prevent you from interrupting it. The warning is evidence about Spark schedules; it is not proof that every Gemini chat schedule, Android command or lock-screen request runs offline.

- Read every step in the workflow, including messages, file changes, connected services and other actions with side effects.
- Ask whether the action remains safe if you cannot monitor it at the trigger time.
- Avoid giving a schedule authority to perform consequential work unless you understand how to stop or undo it.
- Test with a harmless task first, then inspect the result while online.

Using Gemini from a locked Android phone
On most Android phones and tablets, Gemini can be reached by touch or by saying “Hey Google” from the lock screen when the Gemini on lock screen setting is enabled. This is an on-demand assistant interaction: you ask at that moment, rather than waiting for a recurring schedule.
Requests that can work without unlocking
Google lists general questions, calls or messages when you have opted in, some reminders, events, notes and lists, alarms and timers, media controls, selected phone settings and smart-home controls. Availability can vary by device, permissions and the specific request.
Why Gemini may ask you to unlock
Requests involving personal content can require authentication. Google gives reading a calendar as an example. Unlocking protects information that could expose your schedule, messages, files or other account data to someone holding a locked phone. A successful answer to a general question therefore does not mean that every personal-data request is available on the lock screen.

Enable the lock-screen setting in the Gemini mobile app, then review the app’s permissions and Android notification controls. If a request still prompts for authentication, that is an access boundary rather than evidence that Gemini is malfunctioning.
Device assistance is useful, but it is not offline Gemini
Device assistance is a feature in the Android Gemini mobile app for selected phone controls. Supported examples include setting alarms and timers and changing certain device settings. Some actions depend on permissions or on making the Google app the default digital assistant app.
Because Device assistance controls the handset, it is easy to confuse it with a cloud automation. Google’s Device assistance documentation does not state that all Gemini requests, scheduled actions or connected-app workflows execute without a network. Treat local-looking controls and cloud-generated responses as separate capabilities: a timer command may be available through the assistant interface, while a request that needs Gemini’s online services or personal account data may not be.
Locked versus offline: the practical decision framework
Use the following sequence when deciding whether a particular task will work.

- Identify the trigger. Is it a recurring chat prompt, a Spark workflow or a request you are making now?
- Identify the data. General knowledge and simple device controls have different requirements from calendar, mail, files or other personal content.
- Identify the side effects. A notification is informational; sending a message, changing a setting or modifying another service has consequences.
- Check connectivity assumptions. Spark explicitly warns about offline execution. Scheduled chat actions leave the phone’s offline-at-trigger behavior unspecified.
- Check access settings. Keep Activity, connected apps, Gemini on lock screen, permissions and Android notifications each solve a different problem.

Troubleshooting missed or unexpected automations
The schedule exists but no notification appeared
- Open Profile → Scheduled actions and confirm the action is active and the recurrence is correct.
- Check Android’s Gemini notification permission and lock-screen display policy.
- Verify Keep Activity is still enabled.
- If the prompt uses another service, reconnect that app and confirm its own permissions.
- Remember that preparation can occur hours before delivery, so rapidly changing data may not match the value at notification time.
A lock-screen request was refused
- Confirm Gemini on lock screen is enabled.
- Try a non-personal request to determine whether the issue is authentication rather than availability.
- Unlock for calendar, messages or other sensitive account content when Gemini asks.
- Review microphone, phone, messaging, smart-home or other permissions required by the particular action.
A Spark workflow did something while you were disconnected
Review the workflow’s trigger and side effects. Google’s warning means that offline execution is possible and interruption may not be available. Disable or edit the schedule before relying on it again, and remove unnecessary permissions from connected services.

Privacy and reliability implications
Lock-screen convenience trades some friction for less authentication. Keep sensitive notification previews hidden if other people can see your screen. For workflows that can send, change or delete information, design for the moment when you are unavailable: a schedule that is safe only when supervised is not safe as an unattended automation.
Also separate freshness from availability. A scheduled response can be delivered on time yet contain information prepared earlier. That is especially relevant to market data, rapidly changing travel details, breaking news and any prompt whose answer depends on a live system.
Bottom line
Gemini can prepare scheduled chat responses while you are not actively using the phone, and their notifications may show on a locked Android device. Google explicitly documents that Gemini Spark schedules may run while you are offline. For ordinary scheduled actions, however, Google does not explicitly guarantee execution when the phone has no connection. Lock-screen assistance supports selected requests, while personal-content tasks can still require unlocking. Choose the feature by its documented behavior instead of assuming that “locked” and “offline” mean the same thing.
