Usually, no—unless the promotion explicitly grants a permanent copy. Bethesda’s “free” offers can be timed free-play events, trials, free-to-keep giveaways, subscription access, or transfers of games you already owned. A timed event can remove your ability to launch the game when the event ends, while a free-to-keep claim adds an enduring entitlement to the account that claimed it. Installing the game or adding an event listing to a library does not, by itself, prove that you own a permanent license.
Check the exact offer wording, the platform account used to claim it, and the account’s transaction or entitlement history. Bethesda’s support guidance for The Elder Scrolls Online (ESO) states that access ends after its specified free-play event unless you make a full purchase. That is an example of a time-limited event, not a rule that automatically covers every Bethesda promotion.
The short answer depends on the offer type
“Free” describes the price, not the rights you receive. Stores and publishers use several different entitlement models, and they behave differently when a promotion expires.
| Offer wording or situation | What you receive | What happens after the end date | How to verify it |
|---|---|---|---|
| Free weekend, free-play event, or free trial | Temporary permission to run the full game or a defined portion of it | Access may stop unless you purchase the game or otherwise qualify | Read the event terms and look for an access end date or purchase requirement |
| Free to keep, free claim, or permanently added copy | A lasting license attached to the claiming store account | The title should remain available after the promotion, subject to platform and account rules | Look for a zero-price transaction, permanent ownership language, or an ownership entry in account history |
| Subscription or membership access | Permission while the subscription is active and the title remains included | Access normally ends when the subscription or catalog eligibility ends | Check the subscription’s catalog and your active membership status |
| Launcher or platform migration | A transfer of an already-owned game to another launcher or store, when eligible | The migrated entitlement can remain even though the old launcher stops running games | Confirm the original purchase and the destination account used for the transfer |
The decisive question is not whether you downloaded the files. It is whether the account received a permanent entitlement or only temporary event access.

What Bethesda’s support examples show
ESO free-play event: access ended without a purchase
Bethesda’s support page for joining The Elder Scrolls Online Free Play Event describes an event that ran from August 5 through August 12, 2025. It says: “Once the event is over, you will no longer be able to access the game without a full purchase.” That sentence directly answers the retention question for the event described on that page: participating did not turn the event access into permanent ownership.
Those dates identify a past, specific event. They should not be read as a current event calendar or as proof that every future Bethesda promotion uses exactly the same terms. For any new offer, use the dates and conditions on that offer’s official page.
Fallout 76 free trial: saves can carry over, but access is separate
Bethesda’s instructions for a Fallout 76 Free to Play event say the event includes the full game during the trial. They also state: “If you decide you want to purchase the full game after the Free Trial Week has ended, all of your save data will carry over.”
That is a progress-continuity promise, not a permanent-license promise. Your character and saved progress can remain available for a later purchase even though the trial permission itself has expired. In practical terms, a save file and a launch entitlement are separate records: one can survive while the other ends.

How to determine whether your specific claim is permanent
Use this sequence before assuming that a game has disappeared or that you own it forever.
- Identify the exact promotion label. Look for “free weekend,” “free trial,” “free play event,” “free to keep,” “claim,” “included with subscription,” or similar wording. “Download” and “install” describe delivery, not ownership.
- Read the end-of-offer sentence. The important language usually says either that access ends on a date, that a purchase is required afterward, or that the copy remains in your library. If the page only advertises a temporary event, do not infer permanent rights.
- Check the claiming platform. A claim on one store or launcher does not automatically create ownership on another. Verify whether you used Steam, a console store, Bethesda.net, or a subscription account.
- Open transaction or entitlement history. A permanent claim commonly appears as a completed, zero-price transaction or an ownership entry. A temporary event may appear only as an event participation record or may not create a purchase record at all.
- Check the account identity. Confirm the email, platform profile, and Bethesda account associated with the claim. A game can seem missing when it was claimed under a different account.
- Check library filters. Make sure uninstalled, hidden, or not-installed titles are visible. A filter can hide a title without changing ownership.
If the offer terms are silent or ambiguous, treat the access as temporary until the platform’s entitlement record shows otherwise. Do not rely on the fact that the game remains installed.
Why a game can remain installed but stop launching
During a free-play event, the store client can download the same files used by paying customers. At launch, however, the client checks whether the account has a valid license. When the event window closes, that check can fail even though the files remain on the drive.
Deleting and reinstalling the game does not convert a trial into ownership. It may also waste time and bandwidth. First inspect the account’s entitlement and the event’s end condition. If the account never received a permanent license, the normal fix is to purchase the full game or wait for another authorized promotion.

How launcher migration differs from a temporary free offer
Bethesda’s launcher-migration guidance concerns games that were already owned on Bethesda.net Launcher. Bethesda explained that an eligible title could be made available free on Steam through the migration process and that purchases would carry over. That protects an existing ownership record; it does not make every temporary trial permanent.
Bethesda also said users would retain access to their library records on Bethesda.net after May 11, 2022, even though games could no longer be played through that launcher. Another support answer explained that a user who missed the migration period could still migrate the library after the launcher became inactive. These statements involve four separate concepts:
- Library record: the account’s list of titles it owns or is entitled to access.
- Launcher access: whether a particular application can still download or run the game.
- Store transfer: moving an eligible existing entitlement to another platform, such as Steam.
- Event access: a temporary permission that can expire independently of all three.
A title that was purchased before migration can remain transferable even when a free event for that same title expires. Conversely, a trial participant cannot use migration language as evidence of ownership unless the account actually owned the game.

Remove library filters
Show uninstalled titles and clear hidden, family, or category filters. A migrated game may not appear in the default view if the client is displaying only installed software.
Use the platform’s missing-game lookup
Bethesda’s migration troubleshooting directions point users to Steam Support’s missing-game lookup after checking the correct account and filters. This is appropriate when an already-owned title should have transferred but is absent from the destination library.
Handle free titles according to the migration instructions
Bethesda’s guidance says that, for free games that failed to transfer, users should navigate to the Steam store and download them. This instruction applies to the migration case described by Bethesda. It should not be generalized to a trial that ended without a purchase, because a temporary event may never have created a transferable ownership record.
Escalate only after checking the entitlement
When contacting support, provide the platform account, Bethesda account, approximate claim or purchase date, and any transaction receipt. Explain whether the offer was a trial, a free-to-keep claim, a subscription benefit, or a migration. That distinction determines which support path can resolve the problem.

Common mistakes that create false expectations
- Confusing “free to play” with “free to keep.” The first often describes a time window; the second describes a permanent claim.
- Assuming an installed copy is owned. Local files are not proof of a continuing license.
- Treating save carryover as ownership. Fallout 76’s save-carryover statement means progress can continue after purchase; it does not say the trial remains playable indefinitely.
- Applying migration rules to event access. Migration protects eligible pre-existing purchases, not every temporary promotion.
- Checking the wrong storefront. A Bethesda.net record, Steam entitlement, and console-store license are distinct account records.
- Using an old event page as a current offer. The ESO example is dated August 5–12, 2025. Current promotions can have different dates and conditions.
A practical decision rule
Use the following rule when the offer page is unclear: if it gives an end date and says a full purchase is needed afterward, assume access expires; if it says “keep,” “own,” or “permanently added” and creates a transaction or entitlement record, expect the game to remain; if it is tied to a subscription, expect access to follow the subscription; if it is a launcher transfer, verify that you owned the title before migration.
When none of those descriptions fits, the official offer terms and the account’s entitlement history outrank the game’s installation status, a launcher shortcut, or a social-media description.
What to check before an offer ends
- Record the promotion’s exact name and end date.
- Confirm which account and platform received the claim.
- Capture or save the terms that describe post-event access.
- Check whether the account shows a zero-price purchase or permanent ownership entry.
- Back up or confirm cloud-save synchronization if you may buy the game later.
- Do not uninstall until you know whether you need the files for a later purchase; keeping them installed will not preserve access, but it can avoid a second download.
The reliable answer is therefore offer-specific: a Bethesda free-play event can end your ability to launch the game, while a properly documented free-to-keep claim or eligible pre-existing purchase can remain in the account library. Verify the exact terms and account record rather than relying on the word “free.”
