Yes—but only when the console has a slot or an adapter for that cartridge family. “FPGA console” is a hardware approach, not a universal cartridge standard. Analogue Pocket accepts original Game Boy, Game Boy Color and Game Boy Advance cartridges in its built-in slot. Other systems require a console-specific adapter, and some FPGA consoles do not accept cartridges at all. Before buying, match the exact console, cartridge format and accessory model listed by its manufacturer.
This guide explains the confirmed cartridge options, what is included, which accessories are optional, and how to avoid buying an adapter that fits physically but is unsupported.
What an FPGA console does with an original cartridge
An FPGA console uses programmable hardware to reproduce the behavior of a classic console rather than relying solely on software emulation. When a compatible cartridge is inserted, the system reads the cartridge’s game data and runs the matching hardware implementation. The result is still dependent on the console maker’s design: an FPGA system can support one cartridge family, several families through adapters, or no original cartridges.

Compatibility is determined by the exact model, its slot, the adapter firmware and the cartridge family named in the manufacturer’s documentation. A Game Boy adapter is not automatically suitable for Game Gear, and an adapter made for one console is not automatically usable on another.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Confirmed native cartridge support: Analogue Pocket
Game Boy-family cartridges use the built-in slot
Analogue states that Pocket works out of the box with original Game Boy, Game Boy Color and Game Boy Advance cartridges. No cartridge adapter is needed for those three families. Analogue describes the supported library as more than 2,780 Game Boy-family game cartridges; the product page does not give a publication year for that figure.
“Out of the box” means the cartridge slot is part of Pocket itself. You do not need the television Dock, a controller or an adapter simply to insert one of these cartridges and play in handheld mode. You still need the Pocket hardware and its normal power arrangement, and the cartridge must be one of the supported Game Boy-family formats.
Other Pocket formats require the matching adapter
Analogue lists separate support for Sega Game Gear, Neo Geo Pocket and Neo Geo Pocket Color, Atari Lynx, and TurboGrafx-16, PC Engine and SuperGrafx HuCards. These formats do not use Pocket’s native Game Boy-family slot. Each requires the adapter made for that system.
| Analogue Pocket setup | Original media supported | Accessory requirement |
|---|---|---|
| Pocket native slot | Game Boy, Game Boy Color and Game Boy Advance cartridges | No cartridge adapter |
| Pocket with Game Gear Adapter | Sega Game Gear cartridges | Game Gear Adapter, sold separately from the Pocket Adapter Set |
| Pocket with Pocket Adapter Set | Neo Geo Pocket/Color cartridges; Atari Lynx cartridges; TurboGrafx-16, PC Engine and SuperGrafx HuCards | Three-piece set; compatible with Pocket only |
The Pocket Adapter Set contains the TurboGrafx-16/PC Engine/SuperGrafx adapter, the Neo Geo Pocket/Color adapter and the Atari Lynx adapter. It does not include the Game Gear adapter. Analogue’s listing showed the set at $99.99 and out of stock when checked; both price and availability can change, so verify the live listing before ordering.

What the Pocket Adapter Set does—and does not do
It is a three-adapter bundle, not a universal expansion kit
The set covers exactly the three adapter types named above. It is designed for Pocket and is not presented as a general accessory for other Analogue systems. Buying it makes sense only if you own a Pocket and have cartridges from at least one of those three supported groups.
Game Gear is a separate purchase
Game Gear support is listed separately from the bundle. If Game Gear cartridges are your priority, budget for the Game Gear Adapter rather than assuming the three-piece set includes it.
Physical fit is not proof of support
Cartridge shells can look similar while using different electrical interfaces and system behavior. Do not force a cartridge into a slot or buy an adapter solely because its shape appears compatible. Use the manufacturer’s compatibility page and the exact accessory name for your console model.

Package contents can vary by region, edition and production run. The listing checked for this guide showed regional Mega Sg pages as sold out, and availability is not evidence that a product is permanently discontinued or currently obtainable elsewhere. Confirm the exact listing for your region before paying, and check whether a controller is included rather than assuming every bundle contains one.
| Product or setup | Cartridge information established by the listing | Accessory details |
|---|---|---|
| Analogue Mega Sg | Mega Drive/Genesis is the product focus; a Sega Master System cartridge adapter is identified in the checked package listing | HDMI cable, USB cable, power supply and Master System adapter listed; controller not included |
| Analogue Pocket plus Dock | Uses the same Pocket cartridge support, including native Game Boy-family cartridges and supported adapters | Dock adds television output and wired or compatible wireless controller support; it is not a cartridge adapter |
The Mega Sg information above does not establish support for every regional cartridge revision or every accessory sold at another time. Treat the model and region-specific compatibility list as authoritative.
Which accessories are actually required?
For native Pocket cartridges
For a Game Boy, Game Boy Color or Game Boy Advance cartridge, Pocket’s built-in slot is sufficient for cartridge connectivity. You can play handheld without buying a Dock or external controller.

Buy the adapter designed for both Pocket and the cartridge system. Game Gear needs its separate adapter. Neo Geo Pocket/Color, Atari Lynx and TurboGrafx-16/PC Engine/SuperGrafx HuCards use the corresponding adapters in the Pocket Adapter Set.

- Please Note: To reach 10Gbps speed, keep the cable under 3.3 ft. For USB A Male to USB C adapters, try flipping the USB C connector. USB C Male to USB A adapters support bidirectional 10Gbps transfer within 3.3 ft
For television play
Dock is optional. Analogue describes it as the way to connect Pocket to an HDTV and use supported wired USB or compatible wireless controllers. Dock changes the display and control setup; it does not add a new cartridge format. You still need the correct Pocket slot or adapter for the cartridge you want to play.
For Mega Sg control
The checked Mega Sg listing says the controller is not included. Plan on obtaining a compatible controller if your package matches that listing. Cables and power supplies listed in the package do not substitute for a game controller.
For cartridge care
Cleaning supplies are optional maintenance items, not compatibility hardware. Analogue’s support resources include cartridge-cleaning guidance, and its store lists cartridge cleaners. Clean a cartridge only when contacts are dirty or the console reports intermittent reads; cleaning cannot make an unsupported format work.

How to choose the right setup
- Identify the cartridge label. Record the system printed on the cartridge or HuCard: Game Boy, Game Gear, Atari Lynx, and so on. Do not rely on a similar-looking shell.
- Identify the exact FPGA console model. “FPGA console” is too broad. Write down the model name and, where relevant, the regional edition.
- Check native-slot support. For Pocket, Game Boy, Game Boy Color and Game Boy Advance are the confirmed native formats.
- Check whether an adapter is required. For Pocket, Game Gear is separate, while the three other listed families are covered by the Pocket Adapter Set.
- Verify the adapter’s console restriction. The Pocket Adapter Set is described as Pocket-only. Do not assume it works with Mega Sg or another system.
- Separate cartridge needs from display needs. Add Dock only if you want HDTV output or external controllers. It is unrelated to cartridge compatibility.
- Read the current package contents. Confirm power supply, video cable, adapter and controller contents for the exact edition and region.
- Check stock and price immediately before purchase. Store pages change. The Pocket Adapter Set was shown at $99.99 and out of stock when checked, while the checked Mega Sg regional listings showed sold out.
Setting up an original cartridge on Pocket
Game Boy, Game Boy Color or Game Boy Advance
- Turn Pocket off before inserting or removing a cartridge.
- Insert the supported Game Boy-family cartridge into Pocket’s native slot with the label oriented as indicated by the console.
- Turn Pocket on and select the cartridge software when it appears.
- If the game is not detected, remove it, inspect the contacts for dirt, clean the cartridge according to the maker’s care guidance, and reinsert it. A failed read after cleaning may indicate a damaged cartridge or an unsupported variation rather than a missing adapter.
Game Gear, Neo Geo Pocket/Color, Atari Lynx or HuCard
- Confirm that you own the adapter for the exact format. Game Gear uses its separate adapter; the other three listed groups correspond to the three adapters in the Pocket Adapter Set.
- Attach the adapter to Pocket as directed by the manufacturer, without forcing the connector.
- Insert the cartridge or HuCard into the adapter, then power on and launch the cartridge.
- If detection fails, verify that the adapter is seated, the cartridge belongs to the named format and the accessory is a Pocket-compatible model.
Adding HDTV output and external controls
- Connect Pocket to the optional Dock.
- Connect Dock to the HDTV with HDMI.
- Pair a supported wireless controller or connect a wired USB controller.
- Insert the cartridge directly into Pocket or use the appropriate Pocket adapter; Dock does not replace either connection.
- Select the television input and use the controller once the Pocket display is routed through Dock.
Pocket remains usable as a handheld without Dock. Buying Dock is a convenience and display decision, not a prerequisite for original-cartridge playback.

Common mistakes and fixes
“The cartridge fits, but the game does not start”
Check the format against the console’s official list. A physical fit does not establish electrical or firmware support. On Pocket, confirm whether the cartridge is a native Game Boy-family title or needs a specific adapter.
“I bought the Pocket Adapter Set for Game Gear”
The set does not include Game Gear. Obtain the separate Game Gear Adapter, subject to current stock.
“I bought Dock expecting more cartridge formats”
Dock supplies HDTV output and controller connectivity. It is not a cartridge adapter, so it cannot add Game Gear, Lynx, Neo Geo Pocket or HuCard support by itself.
“My Mega Sg package has no controller”
The checked package listing explicitly says the controller is not included. Recheck your region’s listing and obtain a compatible controller if necessary.
“An adapter is unavailable”
Do not substitute an adapter from another console or format. Wait for the correct accessory, verify another current package listing, or use a console whose manufacturer explicitly supports that cartridge family. Availability and prices are volatile.
A practical buying checklist
- Console model and regional edition identified
- Cartridge family identified from its label or documentation
- Native slot confirmed, or exact adapter selected
- Adapter compatibility with the specific console confirmed
- Game Gear separated from the three-piece Pocket Adapter Set
- Dock purchased only for HDTV output or external controls
- Controller inclusion checked in the current package listing
- Current price and stock checked immediately before ordering
- Cartridge-cleaning supplies treated as optional maintenance
Bottom line: compatibility is model-specific
FPGA consoles can play original cartridges, but there is no universal FPGA cartridge slot. Pocket is the clearest confirmed example: Game Boy, Game Boy Color and Game Boy Advance cartridges work natively, while Game Gear, Neo Geo Pocket/Color, Atari Lynx and TurboGrafx-16/PC Engine/SuperGrafx media require named adapters. Mega Sg’s checked package identifies a Master System adapter and omits a controller. Match the cartridge, console and accessory exactly, then add Dock only if you need television output or external controls.
