Four 2.5GbE ports make a mini PC a flexible router or firewall platform, not automatically a good one. The ports give you physical choices for WAN, LAN, a separate network segment, or management. They do not prove that the system can route 2.5Gbps, inspect traffic at that speed, run a VPN quickly, or sustain four links simultaneously.
A sound decision starts with the workload: expected routed traffic, VPN use, intrusion or threat inspection, caching, captive-portal users, logging, and the number of connected networks. Then verify the processor, memory, storage, Ethernet controller, operating-system support, cooling, and the exact configuration being sold.
What four 2.5GbE ports actually provide
Physical interfaces are useful when a router must connect more than a single WAN and single LAN. You might dedicate one port to the internet uplink, one to the main LAN, one to a guest or lab network, and one to a management or backup network. You can also connect selected segments directly and use a separate Ethernet switch for the rest.
That flexibility is different from switching capacity. A four-port firewall is not automatically a four-port switch, and the port count does not establish how much traffic the CPU, memory subsystem, storage, or network drivers can process. VLANs can create multiple logical networks over one physical link, so four ports are not necessary for every design.

Nor does a “2.5GbE” label guarantee line-rate routing. A link rate describes the Ethernet interface; real throughput depends on packet size, bidirectional traffic, firewall rules, NAT, inspection, VPN encryption, queues, and simultaneous users. Treat four ports as an interface-layout feature first and a performance claim never.
Start with the OPNsense hardware baseline
OPNsense states that “the hardware required for your local OPNsense will be determined by the intended minimum throughput and feature set.” Its guidance covers amd64/x86-64 systems and gives two planning tiers. The figures below are sizing guidance, not benchmarks for a particular mini PC.
| OPNsense tier | CPU baseline | Memory | Storage | Documented planning range |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Reasonable | 1 GHz dual-core | 4 GB RAM | 40 GB SSD | 151–350 Mbps with all features and substantial users or networks |
| Recommended | 1.5 GHz multi-core | 8 GB RAM | 120 GB SSD | 350–750+ Mbps with all features and substantial-plus users or networks |
These ranges come from OPNsense’s current hardware sizing page, accessed October 12, 2026: OPNsense hardware sizing and setup. They are broad categories rather than a promise that any system meeting the listed parts will deliver the upper number. A mini PC with four 2.5GbE sockets still needs enough processing headroom for its specific rules and services.
Why the feature set changes the requirement
Basic NAT and firewalling are lighter workloads than a box that performs several kinds of inspection. OPNsense specifically calls out Squid caching, which places substantial demand on CPU load and disk-cache writes, and captive portals serving hundreds of simultaneous users, which require more CPU. If you plan either, size above the minimum instead of buying to the port count.

- HD Display: Connect to the HDMI port to stream or mirror content to an external monitor in resolutions of up to 4K@30Hz. Note: The USB-C ports do not support video output.
- What You Get: Anker 332 USB-C Hub (5-in-1), welcome guide, our worry-free 18-month warranty, and friendly customer service.
State-table capacity also consumes memory. OPNsense estimates about 1 kB of RAM per state-table entry; an average 1,000-entry table is therefore about 1 MB. Busy networks, many clients, long-lived connections, and additional services can raise the table size, so 8 GB is a more comfortable starting point than 4 GB for an extensible installation.
Throughput figures need a workload and a test condition
There is no single “router speed” for a mini PC. A device may route ordinary traffic quickly while delivering a much lower rate through IPsec or threat-protection features. When comparing products, ask whether the quoted number is firewall port-to-port throughput, VPN throughput, inspected traffic, aggregate or one-way traffic, and whether the result was measured with a particular packet size or rule set.
A useful official reference is Deciso’s DEC697 appliance. Its specification lists four 2.5GbE ports, 8 GB of RAM, 256 GB of NVMe storage, 2.3 Gbps firewall port-to-port throughput, 600 Mbps IPsec VPN throughput, approximately 540 Mbps threat-protection throughput, and approximately 13 W typical power consumption. Those are manufacturer-reported figures for that appliance and its stated test conditions, not a benchmark for an arbitrary N100 mini PC. The details are on the DEC600 2.5GbE Series appliance page.

Use the OPNsense planning ranges and the DEC697 figures as context, not as interchangeable scores. A generic mini PC may use a different NIC revision, firmware, memory configuration, cooling solution, or storage device. Without comparable measurements, it is not valid to infer that four ports on one product will match the DEC697’s 2.3 Gbps firewall result.

Inspect the Ethernet controller, not just the socket count
OPNsense says Intel chipset NICs deliver higher throughput at reduced CPU load and describes Intel LAN cards as reliable and fast. That is project guidance, not an independent test of every controller or hardware revision. Confirm the exact Ethernet chipset in the seller’s configuration and check that the OPNsense release you intend to run has a suitable driver.
Product pages sometimes reuse a chassis specification while silently changing the controller, memory, or storage between batches. Save the exact model number and controller details before ordering. Ask the seller for the controller revision if the listing only says “2.5GbE.” Also check whether all four ports use the same controller family; a mixed design can behave differently under load and complicate troubleshooting.
Why driver support matters
A port that negotiates a link is not necessarily a port that performs well under sustained firewall load. Driver support affects offloads, queue handling, interrupts, and stability. If a controller is poorly supported, the CPU may spend more time moving packets, reducing usable throughput and increasing latency. Prefer a configuration whose controller is explicitly identified and known to be supported by your chosen OPNsense version.

- Define the traffic target. Record your internet service speed, expected inter-VLAN traffic, and whether you need simultaneous upload and download at that rate.
- List expensive features. Mark IPsec or other VPN use, threat or intrusion inspection, caching, captive portals, extensive logging, and any service that writes frequently to disk.
- Compare the processor with the workload. The OPNsense recommended baseline is a 1.5 GHz multi-core CPU. Do not use clock speed alone; confirm the processor model, core count, cooling, and whether the vendor limits it under sustained load.
- Choose memory and storage deliberately. The recommended baseline is 8 GB RAM and a 120 GB SSD. Allow additional headroom for large state tables, logs, packages, and disk-writing features rather than selecting the smallest possible configuration.
- Verify every NIC. Identify the controller, confirm driver support, and check that the advertised four ports are physically present on the exact configuration you will receive.
- Plan the port layout. Decide which ports will be WAN, primary LAN, guest or DMZ, and management. If you need many client connections, budget for a managed switch; the mini PC is a firewall, not automatically a replacement for one.
- Check cooling and power information. Fanless operation can be attractive, but sustained packet processing is a continuous load. Compare whole-appliance power measurements when available. Do not compare a processor’s thermal design power with an appliance’s wall consumption as if they measured the same thing.
- Confirm the support and return path. Verify the seller’s exact RAM, SSD, NIC, firmware, warranty, and return terms. Marketplace listings can change while retaining the same product name.
- Test the intended workload. After installation, measure ordinary firewall routing, then test the VPN or inspection mode you will actually use. Record throughput, CPU utilization, latency, and packet loss rather than relying on the link indicator.

The DEC697 is a turnkey reference with OPNsense preinstalled. Its published numbers are useful when you want an appliance with a defined configuration and vendor support, but they should only be compared with mini-PC results measured under equivalent conditions. A bare mini PC may cost less or offer more configuration freedom while leaving you responsible for installation, compatibility checks, updates, and hardware support.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Four ports versus two: decide from topology, not marketing
Two ports are enough for a simple WAN-to-LAN router when a switch handles local segmentation. Four ports become valuable when you want physically separate networks, a dedicated management path, direct lab or storage connectivity, or a second uplink. They can also simplify failure isolation during migration.
However, adding ports can increase cost and power without increasing routing performance. If all internal networks will ride one trunk to a managed switch, a two-port system with a supported NIC may be the better fit. Conversely, if you require separate physical interfaces for policy or operational reasons, four ports can avoid extra hardware and cabling.

Buying the lowest RAM and SSD option
The 4 GB and 40 GB reasonable tier is a floor for a documented planning category, not a universal recommendation. Logs, packages, caching, large state tables, and future features can consume the headroom quickly. The 8 GB and 120 GB recommended tier is a safer starting point for most expandable builds.
Ignoring the exact NIC
“2.5GbE” does not identify a controller. Obtain the chipset and verify OPNsense driver support before purchase, especially when the listing combines several revisions under one name.
Using appliance power figures as a mini-PC promise
The DEC697’s approximately 13 W typical figure belongs to that complete appliance and its measurement conditions. A different mini PC, power adapter, memory configuration, or workload can draw more or less. Compare like with like.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsExpecting a firewall to replace a switch
Four physical ports provide interfaces; they do not automatically provide the switching features, port density, or management functions of a dedicated Ethernet switch. Include a switch in the design when you need many client ports or advanced Layer 2 features.
When a four-port mini PC is a good choice
Choose this format when you want a compact, quiet appliance; need several physical interfaces; are comfortable selecting compatible hardware; and can test the features you plan to enable. It is especially attractive for home labs, segmented small offices, and users who want control over firewall software and storage.
Choose a turnkey appliance instead when predictable support, a preinstalled system, validated components, and a published appliance specification matter more than component flexibility. In either case, select from the required throughput and feature set first, then use port count as a topology decision.
Verdict
Four 2.5GbE ports make a mini PC plausible as a router or firewall and can make network design easier. They do not, by themselves, make it good. A good build combines a supported Ethernet controller, an amd64 processor with enough headroom, adequate RAM and SSD capacity, suitable cooling, and performance tests that match your VPN, inspection, and routing workload. Verify the exact configuration rather than buying on the four-port headline.
