Often, newer foldable-phone designs perform better in controlled folding tests, but an improved hinge does not guarantee a longer-lived phone. A fold count measures a particular component under specific test conditions; everyday life also tests the inner screen, frame, and other parts against scratches, debris, drops, and ordinary wear.

What a fold-count test can—and cannot—tell you

A fold cycle generally means opening and closing a device once. A result such as 200,000 cycles is useful when it is clear which part was tested and how the test was conducted. It does not mean every phone will work for that many cycles, or that the whole device will last a particular number of years.

In particular, do not treat a hinge rating and a display-panel test as equivalent. The hinge is the moving mechanism; the inner screen is a flexible display assembly that bends with it. A panel can remain functional in a controlled folding test even if the test says nothing about the phone’s resistance to scratches, drops, dust, or an individual manufacturing defect.

Fold counts also need context. Test temperature, folding speed and force, sample size, inspection method, and the definition of failure can all affect the result. A figure from a controlled machine test is not directly comparable to a manual test on one phone unless those conditions are known to match.

There is also a difference between a design target and a demonstrated outcome. A manufacturer may state that a mechanism is designed for an average number of cycles. An independent laboratory may report how many cycles a sample completed before a defined problem appeared. Neither statement automatically predicts the minimum life of every retail unit, and neither captures every way a phone can be damaged.

What the published foldable tests show

The available results support a qualified conclusion: current foldable mechanisms and panels can withstand many repeated folds in controlled tests, and an independent lab has found most models in its test history passed its cycle benchmark. They do not establish that one brand or model will last longest in normal ownership.

Evidence Component and result How to interpret it
Samsung Gulf support page, July 1, 2026 Samsung gives the Galaxy Z Fold6 and Z Flip6 mechanisms an average rating of 200,000 fold cycles. A manufacturer-stated average for the mechanisms, not an independently observed whole-phone lifespan.
Samsung LEVANT support page, updated September 5, 2023 Samsung says the Fold5 and Flip5 Flex hinge is designed to handle over 200,000 folding and unfolding cycles on average. A model-specific manufacturer design claim. It is not directly comparable to a display-panel test.
Samsung Display, 2025 The company says the Galaxy Z Fold7 display panel remained fully functional after 500,000 folds over 13 days at 25°C (77°F), in a test verified by Bureau Veritas. This is a verified controlled-cycle result for the panel. It does not establish the hinge’s separate cycle count or the service life of every Fold7 phone.
Which?, publication date not stated on the page; accessed in 2026 58 of 59 foldable models tested since 2020 passed Which?’s 30,000-cycle machine test; the reported exception was a very early model. A broader independent lab result, but it describes performance at that test’s 30,000-cycle benchmark—not a forecast of years in use.
TechRadar report on a 2023 manual comparison One Motorola unit was reported to reach 43,800 hinge folds and 126,300 screen folds; one Samsung unit reached 223,000 hinge folds. These are observations from a very small sample using manual folding, not representative failure rates or a reliable ranking.

Samsung Display also translates its 500,000-fold panel test into more than ten years at 100 folds a day, or more than six years at over 200 folds a day. Samsung’s 200,000-cycle mechanism rating similarly corresponds arithmetically to more than five years at about 100 folds daily. These are usage-rate calculations based on the cycle totals, not years-long field observations of complete phones. Your daily folding rate may differ, and other parts can fail independently.

Why the arithmetic is easy to overread

At 100 complete folds per day, 200,000 cycles divided by 100 equals 2,000 days, or roughly five and a half years. At the same rate, 500,000 cycles is roughly 13.7 years. Those calculations only describe how quickly a user would accumulate the tested number of movements. They do not account for a fall on day one, a scratched inner display, a hinge exposed to grit, battery aging, or a manufacturing variation. Samsung Display’s “more than ten years” and “more than six years” comparisons use different daily rates, so they should not be read as promises for a particular owner.

Why a stronger hinge does not settle screen durability

The inner display is a distinct weak point. Which? reports an average foldable-screen scratch-resistance score of 1.3 out of 5 on its scale, compared with a typical score of 5 for a glass smartphone screen. Its explanation is that the flexible inner material is softer than hardened glass. That comparison concerns scratch resistance; it does not mean the display necessarily fails after a particular number of folds.

Samsung Display attributes the Fold7 panel’s test performance to design changes that include thicker outer Ultra Thin Glass, a high-elastic adhesive, a flattening structure, and a titanium support plate. The test result supports the panel’s performance under the stated conditions. It does not prove that any one of those changes caused the result, or that the display is immune to damage outside the test.

Other failure modes remain separate from hinge cycling. Debris caught near the hinge, a drop, excessive force, screen scratches, and a defect can each affect a phone in ways a repeated opening-and-closing test may not measure. A device can therefore have a hinge that remains functional while its screen or another component needs repair.

“Improved hinge” can describe more than a higher cycle number. It may refer to a redesigned movement, better management of debris, altered shock absorption, or a stronger structure supporting the folding panel. Ask which change is being claimed and whether the supporting evidence tests that specific part. A smoother feel or a thinner crease is not, by itself, a durability measurement.

How to compare two foldable phones

Before using a durability number to choose a model, check what was measured and what the source actually observed. A claimed cycle rating, a lab test, and a report of one manually folded device answer different questions.

  1. Identify the component. Look for whether the claim concerns the hinge mechanism, the folding display panel, or the complete phone. Do not transfer a panel result to the hinge or a hinge rating to the whole device.
  2. Read the test method and conditions. Note whether folding was automated or manual, the stated temperature, the sample count, and what counted as failure. If those details are absent, treat the result as less informative rather than assuming ideal conditions match daily use.
  3. Distinguish a rating from an observed result. A manufacturer’s average design rating is not the same kind of evidence as a lab’s reported test outcome. Attribute each claim to its source and keep its qualification attached to the number.
  4. Check for evidence beyond folding. Find out whether a test addressed scratches, drops, dust, water exposure, or other damage modes. A cycle count alone does not answer those questions.
  5. Check the sample size. A result from 58 of 59 models gives more context than a single manually folded handset, but it still reflects that laboratory’s procedure and benchmark. A one-unit result can illustrate variability without establishing a brand-wide failure rate.
  6. Check local ownership support. Review warranty exclusions, repair availability, parts access, and likely repair costs for the exact model in your country. The figures above do not compare those terms across models or regions.

For a current Samsung example, the Fold7 panel result is more specific than a generic claim of an “improved hinge”: it identifies the tested component, cycle count, duration, temperature, and verification provider. It still should not be read as proof that the Fold7 is the longest-lasting foldable phone, since the result is not a comparison of whole-phone failure rates.

How to reduce avoidable wear

Careful handling cannot eliminate normal wear, but it can help avoid damage that cycle tests do not address. Samsung’s support guidance advises keeping the hinge free of dust or debris and avoiding excessive force. Follow the manufacturer’s instructions for the exact model rather than trying to clear the hinge with force or inserting objects into it.

  • Open and close the phone normally instead of forcing it past its intended movement.
  • Keep grit and debris away from the hinge and folding screen; take particular care in dusty or dirty environments.
  • Handle the inner screen as a softer surface than conventional hardened glass, and follow the maker’s guidance on cleaning and accessories.
  • Consider a model-compatible protective accessory if it suits your use. Samsung recommends protective accessories, but that recommendation does not establish that a case protects the hinge.
  • Before buying, confirm what accidental damage or mechanical failure is covered by the warranty or a separate service plan where you live.

If the hinge suddenly feels rough, will not open flat, or shows visible damage, stop applying extra force. A cycle rating is not permission to keep operating a visibly damaged mechanism, and forcing it can turn a minor problem into a screen or frame failure.

So, are newer foldable phones more reliable?

The evidence points to improved performance in controlled folding tests, not a universal guarantee of longer ownership. Samsung’s stated mechanism ratings and Samsung Display’s Fold7 panel result are encouraging for those specific components and models. Which?’s result—58 of 59 models passing its 30,000-cycle test since 2020—also suggests that repeated folding alone is not an automatic failure point for most of the tested models.

But the available results do not establish comparable whole-phone failure rates across current brands, isolate hinge redesign as the cause of longer real-world use, or show how long any particular model will last for an individual owner. Choose based on the exact model’s component-level evidence, the durability risks relevant to your habits, and the repair and warranty support available locally—not on a fold count converted into a promised number of years.

Frequently asked questions

Frequently Asked Questions

How many times can you fold a phone before it breaks?

There is no universal number. Samsung lists an average 200,000-cycle mechanism rating for several Fold and Flip generations, while Samsung Display reported a Fold7 panel functioning after 500,000 controlled folds. Those figures apply to specified components and conditions, not every phone or every type of damage.

Are newer foldable phones more reliable?

They generally show stronger results in controlled cycle testing, but the evidence does not provide comparable whole-phone failure rates across current brands. Reliability still depends on the screen, debris exposure, drops, manufacturing variation, and local repair support.

Does a 500,000-fold test mean a phone will last more than ten years?

No. More than ten years at 100 folds a day is a calculation from the 500,000-cycle panel test. It is not a ten-year observation of complete phones in ordinary use, and it does not cover scratches, drops, debris, or other components.

Which is more important, the hinge rating or the screen test?

Neither can replace the other. A hinge rating describes the moving mechanism, while a screen test describes the flexible panel. Compare each result with the damage risks and repair terms that matter for the exact model.

Can a case prevent hinge failure?

A compatible case may reduce some accidental damage, and Samsung recommends protective accessories, but the cited information does not prove that a case protects a hinge or guarantees longer service life.

The Bottom Line

Bottom line: Improved hinges and folding panels are encouraging, and newer designs often perform better in controlled cycle tests. Still, no fold count guarantees a whole phone will last a set number of years. Compare the exact component and test conditions, protect the hinge and softer inner screen from debris and force, and weigh local warranty, repair access, parts availability, and cost before buying.
