Yes—some foldable phone cases can interrupt or slow wireless charging, and magnetic charging adds a separate compatibility test. Extra thickness, wallet cards, metal parts and poor coil alignment can keep the phone from coupling properly with a charging pad. A magnetic case must also match the phone’s supported magnetic system; “MagSafe-compatible” is not a universal guarantee for every foldable or every Qi2 charger.

What causes a case to interfere with wireless charging?

Wireless charging depends on the phone’s internal charging coil being close to, and properly aligned with, the active coil in the pad. A case can change that relationship in several ways:

Added distance

Thick material creates a larger gap between the two coils. The greater the distance, the less efficiently energy couples between them. Samsung’s Galaxy Z Fold8 support guidance gives a model-specific limit: remove a third-party cover thicker than 5 mm before charging. That is guidance for the Galaxy Z Fold8, not an industry-wide thickness rule for every foldable.

Cards and metal contents

Wallet cases containing credit cards should be emptied before charging. Samsung specifically tells Galaxy Z Fold8 users to remove cases holding credit cards. Cards, metal plates, magnetic rings, kickstands and other inserts can disrupt the charging field or prevent the phone from sitting flat. Removing the insert is a better diagnostic than assuming the case shell itself is defective.

  • 【Back of Phone Suction Grip】Remove the adhesive film on the phone suction cup and stick it on the phone case. You can then fix the phone on any smooth surface, which is very convenient. (The phone suction cup cannot be removed and reused after being attached to the phone case. It is recommended to attach it to a regular phone case, not a valuable one.)
  • 【Widely Used】Our non-slip silicone phone sticky grip mount attaches to almost any flat phone case and make it compatible with common mobile phones such as iPhone and Android. You can shoot, watch videos or video calls in the kitchen, gym, dance studio, bathroom and other places.
  • 【Capture the Wonderful Picture】Whether you are a TikTok creator or just like to share videos and photos, this phone suction cup can help you hands-free capture wonderful videos and photos for sharing with friends.
  • 【Note】You can fix the phone suction cup on a smooth surface such as a mirror or glass. If necessary, wipe the suction cup with a damp cloth to obtain stronger suction. Before releasing your hand, make sure the phone is firmly fixed. (Not applicable to rough walls, wooden surfaces, and other uneven surfaces)

Coil misalignment

The charging coil is not necessarily behind the visual center of a foldable. A phone can look centered on a pad while its coil is several centimeters away from the pad’s active area. Foldable hinges, narrow cover screens and asymmetric internal layouts make this more noticeable than on a conventional slab phone.

Different pad designs

Third-party wireless chargers use different coil layouts. Samsung notes that coil structures vary and recommends checking for the Wireless Power Consortium (WPC) Qi certification mark. Certification indicates that the charger follows the Qi standard; it does not remove the need to position a particular foldable correctly on that charger.

Foldable models have model-specific alignment rules

Galaxy Z Fold8: align the lower portion

Samsung’s Galaxy Z Fold8 instructions place the charging coil toward the bottom of the phone. Instead of centering the entire handset on the pad, place the lower portion near the pad’s center and watch for the charging indicator. If charging starts only when you slide the phone downward, the case may be fine and the original problem may simply have been alignment.

Samsung’s same guidance says to remove a third-party cover thicker than 5 mm or a case holding credit cards. The page applies specifically to Galaxy Z Fold8 and explicitly excludes Galaxy Z Fold8 Ultra, so do not transfer its dimensions or instructions to another model.

  • COMPATIBILITY — Works with all devices that have a USB-C port.
  • INTEGRATED MICROPHONE — A built-in microphone precisely captures your voice while you’re on the phone, taking a FaceTime call, or summoning Siri — so you’re always heard loud and clear.

Galaxy Z Fold6: older-generation warning

The Galaxy Z Fold6 user manual states that wireless charging may not work smoothly depending on the type of accessory or cover. It does not establish a universal thickness limit or a failure rate. Treat it as confirmation that accessory choice matters, not as a specification for every Fold6 case.

Pixel 10 Pro Fold: magnetic cases are part of the system

Google’s Pixel Help guidance says Pixel 10 Pro Fold magnetic attachment and wireless charging work best with no case or with a case designed for Qi2 wireless charging, such as a Google Pixelsnap case. Google also identifies Pixelsnap and other Qi2-certified devices as compatible magnetic-accessory options. A generic case that happens to contain a magnet may not provide the same alignment or charging behavior.

Wireless charging and magnetic attachment are related, but different

A phone can support ordinary Qi charging without supporting magnetic attachment. Conversely, a case may hold onto a magnetic mount while still placing the phone’s charging coil poorly over a pad. Evaluate these as two separate connections:

  • Wireless charging: the phone and pad must use a compatible Qi implementation, and their coils must be close and aligned.
  • Magnetic attachment: the phone or case must have the correct magnet arrangement and magnetic profile for the accessory.
  • Combined charging accessories: the magnetic ring must hold the phone in the position where the charging coils actually overlap.

“MagSafe” is a specific magnetic-accessory label, not a blanket synonym for Qi2. A case advertised with that phrase may attach securely to one device and fail to align, charge or stay attached on another. Look for explicit support for the exact phone model and for the magnetic charging system that model uses.

What the official guidance establishes

Device or accessory Manufacturer guidance What it means in practice
Samsung Galaxy Z Fold8 Coil is toward the bottom; align the lower portion with the pad. Remove third-party covers thicker than 5 mm or cases holding credit cards. Centering the phone visually can miss the coil. Thickness and wallet contents are explicit reasons to remove the case.
Google Pixel 10 Pro Fold Magnetic attachment and wireless charging work best without a case or with a Qi2-designed case, such as Google Pixelsnap cases. Use a case designed for the phone’s Qi2 magnetic system rather than relying on a generic magnetic ring.
Samsung Galaxy Z Fold6 manual Wireless charging may not work smoothly depending on the accessory or cover. Accessory materials and construction can affect charging; no universal thickness threshold is given.
Samsung Galaxy Z Fold8 Carbon Magnet Case Built-in magnets are marketed to help align the phone for wireless charging. A model-specific magnetic case can improve positioning, but Samsung also warns that magnetic accessories may interfere with wireless charging and NFC.

Samsung’s Carbon Magnet Case listing is regional, so availability and included accessories can differ. Its alignment claim should not be generalized to cases made for other phones.

How to troubleshoot a foldable that will not charge in its case

Use this sequence to isolate alignment, case construction and charger compatibility without guessing which component is responsible.

  1. Identify the exact phone model. Check the manufacturer’s support page or manual for that model’s coil location, case limits and magnetic-accessory requirements. Fold8, Fold8 Ultra, Fold6 and Pixel 10 Pro Fold do not necessarily share the same layout.
  2. Remove everything detachable. Take out credit cards, identification cards, metal plates, magnetic rings, kickstands and grip accessories. Close the foldable in the orientation specified by its manufacturer.
  3. Test without the case. Place the bare phone on the pad. If it charges bare but not in the case, the case or one of its inserts is implicated. This test does not by itself prove whether thickness, material or alignment is the exact cause.
  4. Find the active coil area. Move the phone slowly across the pad in small increments. For Galaxy Z Fold8, start with the lower portion over the center of the pad rather than the visual center of the handset.
  5. Verify the charger. Look for the official WPC Qi certification mark and confirm that the pad is intended for phones, not only for a different device category. Samsung notes that third-party coil structures vary.
  6. Retest with the empty case. If charging works with the shell but fails after cards or a magnetic accessory are added, keep those items off the charging surface.
  7. Check magnetic-system support. For Pixel 10 Pro Fold, use a Qi2-designed case when magnetic attachment is required. For another foldable, follow that manufacturer’s stated system rather than assuming a generic “MagSafe-compatible” label is sufficient.
  8. Try a second known-compatible pad. A successful test on another certified pad points toward coil geometry or alignment on the first pad. A failure on both pads points more strongly toward the case, phone or accessory.

How to choose a case for wireless and magnetic charging

Evaluation point Questions to ask Why it matters
Model fit Is the case made for the exact foldable generation and variant? Coil position, hinge clearance and magnetic layout can change between generations and regional variants.
Magnetic standard Does it explicitly support the phone maker’s magnetic system or Qi2 for that model? A generic magnet can hold the phone without placing its charging coil correctly.
Thickness Is the cover unusually thick, especially around the back panel? More material increases the coil gap. Samsung’s 5 mm warning is specific to Galaxy Z Fold8.
Contents Does it carry cards, a metal plate, a ring or a kickstand? These additions can interfere with the field or prevent flat contact.
Charger match Is the pad WPC Qi-certified and shaped for the phone’s coil location? Certification and proper placement reduce compatibility variables, but neither guarantees every case will work.
Manufacturer instructions Does the phone maker recommend a bare phone or a particular Qi2-designed case? Model-specific instructions are more reliable than a universal marketing label.

Common symptoms and what they suggest

Charging starts only after several attempts

This usually indicates a narrow alignment window or extra distance from the case. Remove inserts, then reposition the phone using the model’s coil location. On a Galaxy Z Fold8, try the lower portion of the handset over the pad’s center.

The phone connects, then stops

An unstable overlap between coils can produce intermittent charging. A raised camera area, hinge-side thickness or a sliding magnetic ring may let the phone move out of position. Test the bare phone and a different certified pad before replacing the case.

The magnetic mount holds, but charging does not

Magnetic attachment alone does not prove that the charging coils overlap. The case may use a ring position intended for another phone, or the pad may use a different coil layout. Use a case explicitly designed for the exact model and supported magnetic system.

Charging works bare but not with a wallet case

The wallet contents are the first suspect. Samsung explicitly instructs Galaxy Z Fold8 owners to remove cases holding credit cards. Test an empty case; if it still fails, compare its thickness with the manufacturer’s guidance.

NFC functions unpredictably after adding a magnetic accessory

Samsung warns that magnetic accessories may interfere with wireless charging and NFC. Remove the magnetic accessory when using NFC and retest before concluding that the phone’s NFC hardware has failed.

Limits of what can be predicted

There is no manufacturer-backed universal case-thickness limit, average failure rate or statistic showing how often foldable cases interfere with charging across all brands. The only numeric threshold in the guidance covered here is Samsung’s 5 mm instruction for third-party Galaxy Z Fold8 covers. Performance depends on the specific phone, case construction, inserts, pad coil layout and placement.

That is why a “Qi,” “Qi2” or “MagSafe-compatible” label should be treated as one compatibility data point, not a guarantee. The reliable method is to match the case to the exact model, remove cards and metal accessories, follow the phone maker’s coil-placement instructions and verify the complete phone–case–charger combination.

Bottom line

Foldable phone cases can interfere with wireless charging when they add too much distance, contain cards or metal, or prevent the phone’s coil from lining up with the pad. Magnetic charging introduces a separate requirement: the phone, case and accessory must support the same magnetic system. Use the exact model’s guidance—such as Galaxy Z Fold8’s lower-coil placement and 5 mm warning, or Pixel 10 Pro Fold’s recommendation for Qi2-designed cases—and test the complete setup rather than assuming any “MagSafe-compatible” case will work.
