Not in every scene. A cheaper phone can take excellent photos in good light, while a premium model may pull ahead for demanding shots—especially distant zoom—thanks to dedicated lenses and more capable camera hardware. The meaningful comparison is between the exact phones, the camera modes you use, and the conditions you shoot in; the available comparisons do not establish that expensive phones win across the market.
Where the price gap can show up
Distant zoom
Telephoto hardware can give a premium phone a real advantage when you photograph faraway subjects. In Android Authority’s comparison, the Samsung Galaxy S25 Ultra has 3x and 5x optical telephoto cameras, while the CMF Phone 2 Pro has a 2x optical telephoto. For a 10x daylight shot, the Galaxy starts from its 5x optical lens and the CMF from its 2x lens, leaving the Galaxy with a stronger starting point for the digital crop. Android Authority found a clear Galaxy advantage in that example: the 10x comparison.
Optical zoom uses a camera lens designed for a particular magnification; digital zoom enlarges or crops image data. A phone with a dedicated telephoto lens can therefore preserve more useful detail at a distant zoom level than one that must crop heavily from a shorter lens. The result depends on the specific phones and zoom level, not on price alone.

Good-light photos
In favorable light, a less expensive phone may produce photos that look competitive with a flagship. Tom’s Guide’s 2026 comparison of the TCL NXTPAPER 70 Pro and iPhone 17 Pro Max says the TCL can match the flagship in ideal lighting. But the same comparison describes a distant 10x subject where the TCL’s crop from its main camera could not match the iPhone’s dedicated telephoto; it also notes a scene in which the TCL’s highlights were blown out: the camera test.

Low light, portraits, and color
A larger sensor can collect more light, which may help in dim conditions. But sensor size does not determine the final photo on its own: stabilization, lens, exposure, processing, and software that combines multiple frames all matter. DPReview notes both the light-capture disadvantage of smaller sensors and the way computational photography can help a phone with smaller hardware keep pace in some situations: its Pixel 10 analysis.
Image rendering is also a matter of preference. In TechRadar’s Pixel 10 versus iPhone 16 Pro Max comparison, the reviewer preferred the Pixel’s low-light portrait in one example but liked the iPhone’s sunset color in another. Contrast, color, skin rendering, and computational effects can change which result looks better to you: the comparison.

What the comparisons do—and don’t—show
These are editorial comparisons of particular phones, not a controlled survey of every model or a market-wide measure of how often premium cameras win. Android Authority used out-of-box settings and handheld, matched-scene shots with little adjustment and no reshoots. That setup is useful for considering casual point-and-shoot use, but a first exposure is not a repeatable lab average. The reviewer also distinguishes comparing phones at a shared zoom value from using each phone at its own native optical advantage, so the chosen method affects what the comparison demonstrates.
TechRadar’s Pixel 10 and iPhone 16 Pro Max findings likewise apply to the tested phones, software, and reviewer’s preferences. The cited articles do not establish an average improvement attributable to spending more, or a universal winner across lighting, lenses, and subjects.

How to compare camera phones for your own photos
Start with the shots you take most often, then compare sample images from the exact models you are considering at the relevant lens or zoom setting. Look for practical differences rather than treating a specification as a camera score.
- Daylight: Check detail, exposure, and whether bright areas retain texture.
- Low light: Inspect noise, color, and whether moving subjects remain clear.
- Zoom: Compare at your usual distance, and distinguish a dedicated optical telephoto from a digital crop.
- Ultrawide: Look at detail and exposure across the frame, not just the center.
- Portraits: Consider skin tones, edge handling, and the rendering style you prefer.
- Everyday use: See whether the default camera app produces a reliable result without extra setup.
Megapixel counts and sensor dimensions can help explain hardware, but neither alone tells you how an image will look. If you can, compare photos taken in the same conditions; otherwise, treat review samples as useful examples rather than definitive scores.

Are expensive phones worth it for photography?
Paying more can make sense if a premium phone’s specific strengths match your photography—particularly if you regularly need distant zoom or want a broader camera system. It is less compelling to pay a premium on the assumption that every photo will look better. A cheaper model may suit you if you mostly shoot in good light and prefer its rendering, provided its lens options cover the subjects you photograph.

TechRadar listed the Pixel 10 at $799 and the iPhone 16 Pro Max at $1,199 in the US in its September 2025 comparison; those figures describe the article-time prices, not what either phone costs today.
