Yes. A console graphics mode changes the rendering workload the game is allowed to use. Quality or fidelity modes normally spend more of that budget on resolution, ray-traced lighting, shadows, reflections and other effects, usually with a frame-rate target around 30 frames per second (FPS). Performance modes remove or reduce some of those costs to target about 60 FPS or more. The visible difference depends on the game, because many titles change their internal resolution dynamically and reconstruct the final image before sending it to your TV or monitor.
That means performance mode is not simply “bad graphics,” and quality mode is not automatically the better choice. One prioritizes motion clarity and control response; the other prioritizes detail in a still image and expensive lighting effects. Your display, the particular game and whether you value responsiveness or visual richness determine which mode makes more sense.
What a graphics mode changes inside a console game
A modern game has a limited rendering budget for every frame. The console’s GPU must calculate geometry, textures, shadows, reflections, lighting, particles, post-processing and, in some games, ray-traced effects quickly enough to meet the selected frame-rate target. A mode changes how that budget is allocated rather than applying a cosmetic filter after the image is finished.

Quality modes commonly render at a higher internal resolution or hold a higher resolution for more of the time. Performance modes may lower the internal resolution, reduce the maximum resolution reached during heavy scenes, or use a less demanding reconstruction method. The console can still output a 4K signal even when the game rendered some or all of the frame below native 4K. The number shown in the console’s video settings therefore does not prove that every frame was rendered natively at that resolution.

Ray tracing, shadows and effects
Ray tracing calculates light, reflections or shadows with more physically based methods, but it consumes substantial GPU time. A fidelity mode may enable it or use a higher-quality setting. A performance mode can disable it, reduce the number of rays, lower shadow resolution, shorten reflection distance, simplify volumetric effects or reduce particle density. Developers choose different combinations for each title, so two games with a “Performance” label can look quite different.
Frame-rate targets
At 30 FPS, a new frame is intended approximately every 33.3 milliseconds. At 60 FPS, the interval is about 16.7 milliseconds. A higher and steadier rate makes camera movement and animation appear smoother and reduces the time between your input and the displayed response. A target is not a guarantee: demanding scenes, unlocked modes and synchronization choices can produce dips, and some games use variable or 120-FPS targets.
Quality mode versus performance mode
| What you notice | Quality or fidelity mode | Performance mode |
|---|---|---|
| Typical target | About 30 FPS | About 60 FPS or higher |
| Internal rendering resolution | Higher target or a higher minimum, depending on the game | Lower target or more aggressive dynamic scaling |
| Ray tracing and lighting | More likely to be enabled or set to a higher quality | Often disabled or reduced |
| Shadows, reflections and effects | Higher settings or greater distance in supported titles | Reduced settings to preserve frame time |
| Motion clarity | Less fluid at a 30-FPS target | More fluid when the target is maintained |
| Control response | More delay between updates than a 60-FPS mode | More frequent updates and generally more responsive control |
| Best fit | Slow-paced play, cinematic presentation and viewers who value detail in still scenes | Action, shooters, racing, competitive play and anyone sensitive to judder or input delay |
A paused screenshot can make a 30-FPS mode look sharper because it may be rendering at a higher internal resolution with better shadows or reflections. During a camera turn, however, a 60-FPS mode displays twice as many updates in the same second. Temporal reconstruction, motion blur and the game’s anti-aliasing can also change how sharp each mode appears while moving. “Lower quality” therefore describes some individual settings, not the entire viewing experience.

Documented examples from current consoles
The following values are examples documented by the game and platform makers. They demonstrate how modes work; they are not universal presets for every title.
| Game or platform | Mode or capability | Documented behavior |
|---|---|---|
| Grand Theft Auto V on PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X | Fidelity Mode | Rockstar Games (2022) describes a native 4K presentation with ray tracing and a 30-FPS target. |
| Grand Theft Auto V on PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X | Performance Mode | Rockstar Games (2022) describes upscaled 4K output with a 60-FPS target. |
| Grand Theft Auto V on PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X | Performance RT | Rockstar Games (2022) describes upscaled 4K, ray tracing and a 60-FPS target. |
| The Elder Scrolls Online on PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X | Performance Mode | Bethesda Softworks (2021) documents 1440p at 60 FPS. |
| The Elder Scrolls Online on PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X | Fidelity Mode | Bethesda Softworks (2021) documents 4K at 30 FPS. |
| Xbox Series X|S hardware | Platform capability | Microsoft’s current Xbox documentation says the consoles support frame rates up to 120 FPS when the game and display support it. Series X is positioned as a native-4K console; Series S is designed for 1440p with 4K upscaling. |
These examples also show why the mode name alone is insufficient. One game may offer a separate ray-tracing option, another may use a 40-FPS balanced mode, and a later patch may alter resolution or frame-rate behavior. Read the game’s own description and patch notes when the distinction matters.
Is performance mode really lower quality?
Usually, some visual settings are lower, but the practical answer depends on what you are looking at. A performance mode might reduce internal resolution, reflections or ray-traced effects while preserving textures, world detail and most of the scene composition. At 60 FPS, motion is updated more often, so a panning camera can look cleaner even though each individual frame contains fewer rendering effects.

Perceived quality also depends on viewing distance and screen size. On a living-room television viewed several feet away, the difference between a dynamic 1800p image and native 4K may be difficult to notice during play, while a 30-to-60-FPS difference is immediately apparent when turning the camera. At a desk, on a large monitor or in a game with fine text and static scenery, the resolution and effect differences may be easier to see.

Neither mode is inherently correct. Choose fidelity when you prefer a cinematic look, spend time inspecting environments or play a slower game. Choose performance when aiming, steering, parrying or rapid camera movement matters more than the last layer of lighting detail. If a title offers a balanced or 40-FPS option, it can provide a middle ground, but its exact resolution and effects are set by that game’s developer.
How dynamic resolution changes the comparison
Many console games use dynamic resolution. The engine monitors GPU load and raises or lowers the internal render resolution so the frame can finish on time. A quiet area with few characters may render sharply; a crowded battle, weather effect or large view may trigger a lower internal resolution. This behavior can occur in both quality and performance modes, although their target ranges differ.

Microsoft Game Dev documentation identifies resolution, frame rate and graphics modes such as performance, quality and resolution as factors that materially change rendering workload and GPU-related variables. In practice, a mode’s advertised resolution should be read as a target, ceiling or output format unless the developer explicitly says that every frame is native at that value.
Image reconstruction uses information from current and previous frames to produce a higher-resolution output from a lower-resolution render. It can look very close to native resolution in a static scene, but fast movement, disocclusion and fine foliage can reveal shimmer or softness. That is why two modes with the same 4K output label can still differ in apparent detail.

Choose performance first for fast action
Start with performance mode for competitive shooters, racing, fighting, sports and any game in which you make frequent quick camera movements. The more consistent frame delivery and lower input latency are usually more valuable than higher-quality reflections. If the mode is unstable or looks distracting, try the game’s balanced option or cap the frame rate if that setting is available.

Choose fidelity for cinematic and slower play
Fidelity is a sensible choice for exploration, turn-based combat, narrative scenes and games where you spend time examining architecture or landscapes. Ray-traced lighting, denser shadows and higher resolution can make those scenes more convincing. A 30-FPS target can feel perfectly acceptable if the game’s frame pacing is even and you are not making rapid turns.
Use the game’s own description, not the console model alone
PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X and Xbox Series S do not impose one universal mode. Developers decide the internal resolution range, effects and frame-rate target for each title. Series S can have different resolution targets from Series X, and a patch can add or remove a mode. Check the in-game graphics menu and the developer’s current notes for the version you own.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Does a 120 Hz display make console graphics look better?
A 120 Hz television or monitor does not automatically increase image quality. It allows a compatible console and game to present updates at rates such as 120 FPS, or to display a 40-FPS mode evenly because 120 is divisible by 40. Whether you receive those benefits depends on the game, console model, display input and cable.

Microsoft states that Xbox Series X|S supports up to 120 FPS with supported content and a compatible display. Sony’s current PlayStation support guidance says PS5 can output 4K at 120 Hz when the display, HDMI connection and video-output settings are compatible, and recommends the included Ultra High-Speed Cable or another cable rated for 4K 120 Hz.
Requirements for 4K/120 Hz output
- A game that includes a 120-FPS or other high-refresh mode.
- A console model capable of the required output; the game may still use a lower resolution at 120 FPS.
- A television or monitor with a 4K/120 Hz-capable HDMI input. Some displays support 120 Hz on only one or two inputs.
- An Ultra High-Speed HDMI cable for 4K 120 Hz, or another cable explicitly rated for that bandwidth.
- Compatible video-output settings on the console and any receiver or switch in the signal path.
Basic setup checks
- Connect the console directly to the display with the supplied or correctly rated cable while testing. Bypass an older receiver, switch or soundbar if it may limit the signal.
- On PS5, open Settings > Screen and Video > Video Output and review the detected resolution, 120 Hz output and 4K transfer information. Set the options to automatic or to the supported values shown by the display.
- On Xbox, open Settings > General > TV & display options and check the resolution, refresh rate and 4K TV details. Run the console’s compatibility checks if an option is unavailable.
- Enable the game’s 120-FPS or performance mode. The console menu alone cannot force a game to render at 120 FPS.
- Confirm the display’s information panel reports the expected refresh rate while the game is running; menus may use a different rate.
If 4K/120 Hz is missing, test another HDMI input, replace an uncertified cable, update the display firmware and remove intermediate equipment. A display that accepts 4K at 60 Hz may still reject 4K at 120 Hz. Some games also lower resolution substantially to reach 120 FPS, so a higher refresh rate is a motion feature rather than a promise of sharper graphics.
How to evaluate a mode in a game
- Read the mode descriptions for resolution, ray tracing and frame-rate targets. Treat words such as “up to,” “dynamic” and “target” as meaningful qualifications.
- Stand at your normal viewing distance and inspect a static scene with fine geometry, distant foliage, text and reflective surfaces.
- Pan the camera slowly, then quickly. Look for judder, shimmering, softness and uneven frame pacing rather than judging only a paused image.
- Test the activities you actually play: aiming, driving, crowd scenes or large battles can trigger dynamic-resolution changes.
- Switch modes without changing the television’s sharpness or motion-processing settings. Otherwise the display, rather than the game, may be responsible for the apparent difference.
- Keep the mode that feels best for the majority of your play, and revisit it after major patches because developers can change targets and rendering features.
Common misunderstandings and limitations
- “4K output” does not always mean native 4K rendering. A game can render below 4K and upscale or reconstruct the image.
- 60 FPS is not guaranteed just because a mode is called Performance. Heavy scenes, unlocked frame rates and synchronization can cause variation.
- 120 Hz is not the same as 120 FPS. The display can refresh at 120 Hz, but the game must produce the frames.
- A faster display cannot repair a 30-FPS game mode. It may show that mode cleanly, but it cannot create additional game frames.
- Console model names do not define every game’s settings. Series X, Series S and PS5 titles can have different targets, and patches can change them.
- Frame pacing matters. A steady 30 FPS can feel smoother than an inconsistent mode that fluctuates between higher and lower rates.
Graphics modes are therefore real performance choices. Fidelity modes generally trade frame-rate headroom for resolution and effects; performance modes trade some of those visual costs for smoother motion and faster response. Use performance for control-sensitive action, fidelity for cinematic detail, and a supported balanced or 40-FPS mode when the game provides one. Judge the result in motion on your own display, not from the mode label or the console’s output-resolution number alone.
