Yes. A compact Xbox controller works with both Xbox Series X|S and Xbox One when its specific model is certified for both generations. Size is not the deciding factor; the manufacturer’s compatibility list and the controller’s connection method are.

The short answer: compatibility is model-specific

Xbox supports cross-generation controller compatibility. Ryan Whitaker, a senior designer at Xbox, stated in an Xbox Wire explanation published in 2020: “we’re supporting cross-compatibility between Xbox Series X and Xbox One consoles and controllers. They all work together with the same great Xbox Wireless Radio.” That means an Xbox One controller can be used on an Xbox Series X or Series S, and a compatible Series X|S controller can be used on an Xbox One.

Compact controllers follow the same rule. A smaller shell does not make a controller incompatible, but not every mini, travel-size or third-party gamepad is licensed for Xbox. Check the exact model name and edition rather than relying on a retailer category such as “Xbox controller.” Two products from the same manufacturer can have different console support.

How the connection type affects setup

Wireless compact controllers

A wireless model that explicitly supports Xbox uses the console’s Xbox Wireless connection rather than ordinary Bluetooth for console play. The Xbox Nano Controller, for example, is listed as connecting to consoles through Xbox Wireless. You normally pair it through the console’s standard Xbox controller process: turn on the console, start the controller, press the console’s pairing control, then press the controller’s pairing control. Button locations and timing can vary, so use the model’s manual if the labels differ.

For a console, a separately purchased wireless adapter is not normally part of the connection path for a controller listed as Xbox Wireless. Do not confuse console compatibility with PC connectivity: a controller can support Windows through a different method, and a PC may require Bluetooth, a cable or a compatible wireless accessory even when the same controller pairs directly with an Xbox.

Wired compact controllers

Wired models connect to a USB port on the console. The Afterglow Wave is specified with a 10-foot USB-C wired connection, while the PowerA Nano is identified as a wired controller. A wired model avoids pairing and battery charging, but it requires a cable long enough for your seating position and a free USB port.

Check what is in the box. Some wired controllers have a permanently attached lead; others use a detachable cable. If the cable is detachable, confirm that the package includes the required cable and that replacement cables meet the controller’s connection requirements. A controller listing that says “USB-C” describes the connector; it does not by itself tell you whether a cable is included, how long it is or whether every USB-C cable will provide the same behavior.

How to verify a listing before you buy

  1. Record the exact model and edition. Copy the complete product name, including revisions, colors, bundles and platform suffixes. A similarly named PC, mobile or older Xbox model may not have the same certification.
  2. Find the manufacturer’s compatibility line. Look specifically for both “Xbox Series X|S” and “Xbox One.” A listing that mentions only “Xbox” is less precise than one that names both generations.
  3. Confirm the connection method. Wireless models should state Xbox Wireless support for console use. Wired models should identify a console USB connection and explain whether the cable is attached or supplied.
  4. Check the console edition you own. Series X and Series S use the same controller-generation designation, but your older Xbox One, Xbox One S or Xbox One X still needs to appear in the stated support list.
  5. Read the accessory and operating-system requirements. Check cable length, detachable-cable details, battery requirements for wireless models and any Windows version limits. Windows 10/11 support does not replace Xbox certification.
  6. Review the controls you actually need. Verify button layout, remappable buttons, headset support, audio controls, rumble and trigger features. “Compatible” means it can function on the console; it does not guarantee the same feature set as a full-size first-party pad.
  7. Recheck the seller’s stock and return terms. Manufacturer specifications can remain online after a retailer changes its inventory. Keep the product page or manual that identifies the compatible generations in case the delivered item differs from the listing.

Setting up a compatible controller on Series X|S or Xbox One

Wireless setup

  1. Install batteries or charge the controller if its design requires a power source.
  2. Turn on the Xbox console and the controller.
  3. Use the console’s pair button and then the controller’s pair button. Hold them until the status light indicates a connection.
  4. Choose a profile when the console prompts you, or sign in with the account already assigned to the controller.
  5. Open a game and test both sticks, triggers, bumpers, menu buttons and any headset controls before putting the controller into regular use.

If pairing fails, move the controller closer to the console, power-cycle both devices and repeat the normal pairing process. If the controller never enters pairing mode, check its manual and confirm that the model is the Xbox version rather than a Bluetooth-only variant.

Wired setup

  1. Turn on the console or wake it from standby.
  2. Connect the controller directly to a console USB port with its supplied or specified cable.
  3. Wait for the console to identify it, then press the controller’s Xbox button if required.
  4. Select or assign the desired player profile.
  5. Test the cable by gently moving it at the controller and console ends. Intermittent input usually indicates a loose connection, damaged cable or stressed USB port rather than a generation-compatibility problem.

Wired operation removes wireless pairing, but it does not make an unsupported controller compatible. The product still needs an Xbox-compatible firmware and licensing path identified by its manufacturer.

Features that compact designs can change

Cross-generation support answers whether the controller can operate on the console. It does not answer whether it will feel or function exactly like the standard controller supplied with the Xbox. Compare these points after compatibility is established:

  • Hand fit and reach: A smaller body can help children, users with smaller hands or players who want a travel controller. It can also place sticks, triggers and menu buttons closer together than expected for larger hands.
  • Button mapping: Check whether extra rear or shoulder buttons exist and whether they can be remapped on the console. Do not assume that a compact model includes programmable controls.
  • Headset and audio controls: Confirm the presence and location of a 3.5 mm headset jack, mute control or volume buttons. Some compact controllers support game input but omit dedicated audio controls.
  • Rumble and trigger effects: Product pages may list vibration or trigger features separately. Compatibility alone does not prove that every feedback feature is present.
  • Cable management: A 10-foot lead can suit a living-room setup, while a shorter cable may be easier at a desk. Measure the route from the console to your seat before choosing a wired model.
  • Power: Wireless controllers need batteries or charging. Wired controllers draw power through USB but leave you dependent on the cable and port.

Common problems and the right fix

The controller is not detected at all

First compare the exact model number with the manufacturer’s Xbox compatibility statement. If the listing names only PC, mobile, PlayStation or Nintendo platforms, no cable or adapter can turn it into a supported Xbox controller. For a wired model, try another console USB port and reseat the connector. For a wireless model, replace or recharge the power source and repeat pairing.

It works on one Xbox generation but not the other

Recheck the wording rather than assuming an error in the console. “Xbox Series X|S” alone does not establish Xbox One support, and “Xbox One” alone does not establish Series X|S support. The safest purchase is one whose own specification lists both generations explicitly. Also make sure you did not receive a regional, platform-specific or revised edition with a similar name.

The controller connects, but a feature is missing

Test the basic sticks and buttons first. Then consult the manual for headset audio, rumble, trigger effects and remapping. Those features vary by model and are separate from the cross-generation connection claim. A compact controller can be fully compatible while offering fewer controls than the standard Xbox pad.

The wireless connection drops

Confirm that the controller is using its stated Xbox Wireless procedure, keep it within a practical range of the console and remove obvious obstructions or nearby sources of radio interference. If the problem follows the controller to both an Xbox Series console and an Xbox One, contact the manufacturer or retailer; cross-generation support does not rule out a defective unit.

The cable is too short or unreliable

Measure the distance to your seat and inspect both connectors for strain. The Afterglow Wave’s listed 10-foot USB-C lead illustrates why cable length should be treated as a buying specification. If a detachable cable is used, test a suitable replacement and verify that the controller’s manual permits it.

Do you need a special adapter?

For the listed console use cases, no special adapter is indicated when the model is explicitly Xbox Wireless or a compatible wired USB controller. Wireless models pair through Xbox Wireless; wired models plug into the console. Adapters become a separate question for PC use, where Bluetooth, USB and proprietary wireless requirements can differ. Always follow the controller’s platform-specific instructions rather than buying an adapter first.

What the available specifications do—and do not—prove

Manufacturer compatibility statements establish intended platform support, not a ranking of responsiveness, durability or ergonomics. No independent latency or durability comparison is established for the compact models discussed here. Treat retailer reviews and promotional claims separately from the formal console list, and test the controller during the seller’s return period if hand comfort, wireless range or long-session reliability is critical.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The practical decision is therefore straightforward: select a compact controller whose exact specification names Xbox Series X|S and Xbox One, then choose wired or wireless based on your cable, power and seating requirements. After that, compare fit and features rather than assuming that every small controller has the same layout or accessories.
