Collagen supplements may cause side effects, although the oral collagen studies reviewed so far generally describe them as well tolerated. Reported reactions include stomach discomfort, bloating and, in one study, a mild facial rash. The evidence does not establish how often these effects occur, prove that collagen itself caused every reported reaction, or rule out uncommon or long-term harms. Check the full product label and speak with a health professional about your own risks, especially if you have allergies, take medicines or have surgery planned.

Which side effects have been reported?

Reports from studies of oral collagen include mild gastrointestinal symptoms and an occasional rash. These are possible reactions to watch for, not a complete list of everything a person might experience and not a reliable estimate of the risk for any individual product. The findings describe symptoms reported by participants; they do not establish that collagen was the cause in every case.

Digestive discomfort

A narrative review of human research on oral collagen peptides describes stomach heaviness, pain and bloating. Some participants stopped taking collagen because of gastrointestinal problems. The review does not establish how frequently these symptoms occur across all users or products. It also does not provide a way to predict who might experience them or how severe they might be.

If you notice new digestive discomfort while taking a supplement, note when you started it, how much you took and when the symptoms began. Do not assume that timing alone proves the supplement caused the problem: other ingredients, medicines or unrelated health issues may also matter. If symptoms are severe, persistent or concerning, seek medical advice rather than trying to diagnose the cause yourself.

Rash

The same review describes one mild facial rash that resolved after the participant stopped taking the product. A single report cannot establish how likely a rash is, whether collagen itself caused it, or whether the finding applies to other formulations. The sources reviewed here do not establish a collagen-specific allergy rate or identify a particular source that is safe for everyone.

A rash or other suspected reaction deserves attention even though the available reports are limited. Stop taking a supplement you suspect is causing an adverse event and seek medical care or advice. Serious or urgent symptoms call for prompt medical attention; do not wait for a product seller or online discussion to decide whether they are harmless.

Some products contain ingredients in addition to collagen, and individual studies may not let researchers separate the effects of each ingredient. A symptom reported while someone was taking a supplement therefore should not automatically be treated as proof that collagen caused it. When possible, keep the container or a clear photo of the entire label so a health professional can review the actual product.

How reassuring is the safety evidence?

Two systematic reviews offer some reassurance, but neither establishes that every collagen product is safe for every person. Their findings apply to the studies and participants they included, and the broader evidence has important limits. Different studies may use different product sources, formulations and durations, so a summary across trials cannot answer every question about a specific product or long-term use.

A 2026 review of hydrolyzed collagen trials

A 2026 systematic literature review covered 25 randomized controlled trials of hydrolyzed collagen. Individual trial sample sizes ranged from 13 to 236 participants. The review described collagen as generally well tolerated and adverse events as low in incidence, but it also rated most included trials at high risk of bias. Small studies and potential bias make it difficult to treat that reassuring summary as a precise measure of safety.

Orgain 20g Hydrolyzed Collagen Peptides Powder, Unflavored, 1lb
  • CLEANER INGREDIENTS: Includes hydrolyzed grass-fed, pasture-raised bovine collagen peptides and essential amino acids: Lysine, Leucine, Histidine, Methionine, Isoleucine, Phenylalanine, Theronine, Valine
  • HIGHER STANDARDS: Because we’re serious about clean, you can rest assured this product is made without lactose, dairy or soy ingredients, gluten free, has no sugar added*, Non-GMO, and contains no artificial flavors, preservatives, or colors.
  • EASY TO MIX: Since it’s unflavored and dissolves easily, this collagen blend can be used any way! Hot or cold – stir it (we love it in coffee), blend it (protein shake, anyone?), bake it (a secret upgrade for that batch of cookies?).
  • 20G COLLAGEN PEPTIDES PER SERVING: Every serving (2 scoops!) packs 20g of odorless and colorless Type I and III grass-fed, pasture-raised collagen hydrolysate peptides, essential amino acids and approximately 18g of protein.
  • WHAT TO EXPECT: Includes 1 (1 Lb) ready to mix Orgain Collagen Peptides Powder. Great for Women & Men.

“Low in incidence” in this review is not a universal probability that can be applied to every shopper. The trial sizes varied, and the review did not establish a single risk percentage for all products, users or lengths of use. It is more accurate to say that the trials generally reported tolerability than to promise that side effects are rare for any one person.

A 2019 review of dermatological uses

A systematic review by Choi, Sung, Juhasz and Atanaskova Mesinkovska included 11 studies and 805 patients. It reported no adverse events in the included studies. That is a finding about those studies and populations, not evidence that side effects cannot occur with other products, in other users or over longer periods.

The figures from these reviews describe separate sets of studies; they are not a combined count of all collagen safety studies. They also do not provide a universal percentage for the chance of a side effect. The narrative review’s examples of digestive symptoms and a rash add detail about what has been reported, but they do not resolve those limits.

Taken together, the reviews support a cautious summary: oral collagen has generally been described as well tolerated in the studies considered, while the evidence is not strong or broad enough to rule out uncommon reactions or long-term harms. A lack of reported events in a particular group of studies is not the same as proof that an event is impossible, especially when trials are small or have limitations.

Why your product and health history matter

“Collagen supplement” does not identify one uniform product. Supplements are sold in forms such as powders and capsules, can use different animal sources, and may contain added ingredients. NCCIH cautions that supplements purchased in stores or online may differ from products tested in research. A result from one study therefore may not describe the exact product on a store shelf.

The available evidence does not compare powders with capsules for side effects, nor does it establish that one collagen source or formulation is safer than another. Choosing a format or brand based only on the word “collagen” is not a substitute for checking the product’s contents and considering your own health history.

Check the complete label

Read the ingredient list and serving directions, not just the prominent collagen wording on the front of the package. Note the listed collagen source and every added ingredient. If you have a known food allergy, check whether the source or another listed ingredient raises a concern; if you are unsure, ask a clinician or pharmacist rather than assuming a particular source is universally safe. The available evidence does not establish a reliable collagen-specific allergy rate or show that one source is safe for everyone.

Follow the serving directions on the label, and share the complete ingredient list with a health professional if you are asking about suitability. A label helps identify what is in the product and how it is meant to be used; it cannot by itself prove the product has the same composition as the one used in a clinical trial or guarantee that it is appropriate for you.

Consider medicines and planned surgery

NCCIH notes that dietary supplements may interact with medicines and may pose risks for people with certain medical problems or surgery planned. The evidence summarized here does not identify a specific interaction between collagen and a particular medicine, nor does it establish a universal waiting period before surgery. Give your clinician or pharmacist the product name and full label so they can assess your circumstances.

Do not stop a prescribed medicine or change a treatment plan in order to take a supplement without discussing it with your health professional. If a procedure is planned, tell the care team about supplements you use and follow their individualized instructions. The general cautions about supplements do not amount to a collagen-specific interaction finding, but they are a reason to make sure your care team knows what you take.

Do not assume a study product and a retail product are interchangeable

Differences in source, formulation and added ingredients matter when comparing a study result with something you are considering taking. The reviewed sources do not show that a particular brand or formulation is safer than another. A label can help you identify what you would take, but it cannot by itself establish that the product has the same composition as one used in a clinical trial.

When comparing products, focus on the listed source, the complete ingredient list, serving directions and any ingredient that may be relevant to your allergies or health concerns. Do not treat a product’s availability for sale, a prominent claim on its packaging or a similarity to a study product as proof of safety for you. The sources discussed here do not establish a best brand, a safer formulation or a price-based safety advantage.

What to do if you suspect a reaction

  1. Stop taking the supplement if you think it is causing a reaction. FDA consumer guidance advises stopping a supplement suspected of causing an adverse event and seeking medical care or advice. Do not take another serving simply to see whether the reaction happens again.
  2. Seek care appropriate to the symptoms. Contact a health professional for medical advice; serious or urgent symptoms require prompt medical attention. Do not wait for a supplement company or an online discussion to determine whether urgent symptoms are harmless.
  3. Keep the product information available. Save the container or a clear record of the label, including the ingredient list and serving directions. Tell the health professional when you started taking it, how much you took and when the symptoms began. This information can help them assess the situation; it does not prove the supplement caused it.
  4. Report a suspected adverse event to FDA. FDA advises consumers to report suspected problems with dietary supplements. Reporting is useful even when the cause is uncertain; a report is not, by itself, proof that a product caused a particular symptom.

Reporting and medical care serve different purposes: contacting a health professional is for advice about your symptoms, while an FDA report helps alert the agency to a suspected product problem. Do not delay needed care in order to file a report. FDA also advises consumers to follow label directions and talk with a health professional about a supplement’s potential benefits and risks.

What U.S. supplement rules mean for safety

In the United States, FDA does not approve dietary supplements for safety and effectiveness before companies market them. Companies are responsible for ensuring their products meet applicable requirements. FDA monitors reports and may take action when a product is unsafe or does not comply with requirements.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

That regulatory framework is one reason a supplement’s availability for sale should not be treated as a guarantee that it has been proven safe for every user or that it will match products studied in clinical trials. FDA advises consumers to follow label directions and talk with a health professional about potential benefits and risks before buying or taking a supplement. That advice is particularly relevant when you have a medical condition, take medicines, have an allergy concern or have surgery planned.

Frequently Asked Questions

Are collagen supplements side-effect-free?

No supplement can be assumed to be side-effect-free. Reviews describe oral collagen as generally well tolerated, but reports include digestive discomfort and an occasional rash. The evidence does not rule out uncommon or long-term harms.

How common are collagen supplement side effects?

The available reviews do not establish a reliable percentage for all users or products. A 2026 review of 25 randomized trials described adverse events as low in incidence, but most included trials had high risk of bias and sample sizes ranged from 13 to 236. Those findings cannot be used as a precise personal risk estimate.

Can collagen cause an allergic reaction?

A narrative review describes one mild facial rash that resolved after the participant stopped taking the product, but this does not establish its cause or a collagen-specific allergy rate. Products can have different animal sources and added ingredients. Check the entire label and ask a health professional if you have an allergy concern.

Are collagen powders safer than capsules?

The sources reviewed do not compare powders and capsules for safety or show that one form causes fewer side effects. Check the complete ingredient list and serving directions for the particular product rather than assuming its format determines its safety.

Can I take collagen with medicines or before surgery?

NCCIH notes that supplements may interact with medicines or pose risks for people with certain medical problems or surgery planned. The sources here do not identify a specific collagen interaction or a universal pre-surgery waiting period. Show your clinician or pharmacist the full label and ask for advice tailored to you.

What should I do if I think collagen caused a reaction?

Stop taking the supplement and seek medical care or advice. Serious or urgent symptoms need prompt attention. Keep the package or a clear label record, and consider reporting the suspected adverse event to FDA; a report does not prove the product caused the symptoms.

The Bottom Line

Oral collagen has generally been described as well tolerated in clinical studies, but stomach discomfort, bloating and an occasional rash have been reported. Limited study sizes, potential bias, product differences and uncertainty about uncommon or long-term effects mean it is not possible to promise that a supplement is side-effect-free or estimate your personal risk. Check the full label, discuss medicines, allergies or planned surgery with a clinician or pharmacist, and stop the product and seek advice if you suspect a reaction.
