Some do, but there is no universal rule. Ikaruga is a documented Steam example with local two-player play, including a one-controller “Double Play Mode,” and support listed for an Xbox 360 controller, keyboard and mouse. Other collections advertise playing with a friend or shared/split-screen co-op without identifying controller models. Treat compatibility as a game-by-game question: read the individual Steam page, then confirm Steam Input and local-player settings for the controllers you own.
What “support” means on a Steam arcade shooter
Three separate questions are often collapsed into one store-page label:
- Does the game run more than one local player? Look for wording such as “2 Players game (Local),” “local co-op,” “shared/split screen,” or “play with a friend.” Online multiplayer or Remote Play Together is not the same as two people sitting at one PC.
- Can each person use a separate controller? A game may support two players but assign both players to one keyboard, one gamepad, or a special alternating mode. A statement that two people can play with one controller describes a different arrangement from two independent pads.
- Which input devices are actually documented? “Controller support” or “gamepad recommended” is useful, but less precise than a named device such as an Xbox 360 controller. A generic label is not a guarantee that every current-generation Bluetooth or USB controller will work without configuration.
Classic ports were released across several hardware generations. Their original input assumptions, menu systems and player-selection screens vary, so a current PC pad can behave differently from the model named by the publisher. Steam Input may translate a modern device into a layout the game understands, but that depends on the game, its input code and your selected Steam configuration.
Documented Steam examples
| Game or collection | Local-play wording | Controller information | What is not established |
|---|---|---|---|
| Ikaruga (Steam, released February 18, 2014) | The store page lists multiplayer and shared/split screen, explicitly says “2 Players game (Local),” and describes a one-controller “Double Play Mode.” | Xbox 360 controller, keyboard and mouse are named. | The listing does not specifically guarantee every newer controller or explain whether two modern pads will be recognized automatically. |
| Contra Anniversary Collection | Konami describes the collection as playable alone or with a friend and lists Steam as a platform. | No controller model matrix is given in the cited publisher material. | The cited description does not specify local versus online behavior for every included title, nor whether each game accepts two separate pads. |
| Arcade Classics Anniversary Collection | Steam’s support listing reports shared/split-screen co-op. | A gamepad or controller is recommended. | No particular modern controller model or dual-controller behavior is identified. |
These examples show why the answer cannot be reduced to “all classic shooters support couch co-op” or “old ports do not work with modern pads.” The strongest claims are the ones written on each product or support page, and those claims differ in detail.
#1 Best Overall
- With broad game support, the Logitech Gamepad F310 works with old standbys to today's biggest titles, so it's easy to set up and use with your favorite games.
- Profiler software allows the gamepad to be programmed to perform keyboard and mouse commands for games without gamepad support.* * Requires software installation.
- A familiar control layout that doesn't require a learning curve to be able to use, with all the same buttons as on an Xbox 360.
- The unique floating D-pad rests on four switches-instead of a single pivot point-making it responsive to quick changes in direction.
- The six-foot cord lets you lean back and play a comfortable distance from your PC monitor.
Ikaruga: the clearest documented case
Local two-player play
Ikaruga’s Steam listing gives an unambiguous local-multiplayer statement: “2 Players game (Local) and Double Play Mode: You can play 2 Players game with one controller.” That confirms a two-player option on one PC and a mode in which one person can control both player ships with a single device. It does not imply that two people must share one controller; it says the one-controller option exists in addition to the local two-player game.
Named input devices
The same listing names an Xbox 360 controller, keyboard and mouse. This is a specific disclosure from the product page, not a compatibility promise for every later Xbox, PlayStation or third-party pad. If you own a current controller, use the listing as evidence that controller input is part of the PC version, then verify whether Steam Input presents your device in a usable layout.
What to expect when choosing a setup
- For solo play, keyboard, mouse or a supported gamepad are documented options.
- For two players, the page confirms local play but does not publish a complete map of player-one and player-two assignments for every device combination.
- For “Double Play Mode,” one controller is explicitly sufficient, so it is not necessary to buy a second pad for that particular mode.
What the collection pages do—and do not—promise
Contra Anniversary Collection
Konami’s description says the collection can be played alone or with a friend and lists Steam among the platforms. That is useful evidence that friend-based play is part of the collection’s intended experience. However, the cited description does not provide a controller compatibility table, a per-title local-player matrix, or a statement that every included game supports two separate modern controllers. Check the Steam page for the individual collection and any in-game control menu before assuming a specific couch arrangement.

Arcade Classics Anniversary Collection
Steam’s support listing identifies shared/split-screen co-op and recommends a gamepad or controller. This is stronger than a page that mentions only online play, because shared or split-screen wording points to people playing at the same computer. It still leaves two practical questions open: which controller models are recognized, and whether two independent pads are required or optional. Those details should be confirmed in the game’s current Steam documentation and configuration screen.
How to check a port before you buy
- Open the exact Steam product page. Collections can contain games with different modes, so do not rely on a franchise-level description alone.
- Find the feature list and system requirements. Look specifically for “Local,” “Shared/Split Screen,” “Co-op,” or a player count. “Multiplayer” by itself is ambiguous.
- Read the input disclosure literally. A named controller model is more informative than “gamepad recommended.” Record whether keyboard and mouse are also listed if you plan to mix devices.
- Distinguish two-player play from one-controller modes. Phrases such as “play two players with one controller” prove a shared-device mode, not automatic support for two separate pads.
- Check recent support notes and community discussions. Use them to identify menu quirks or configuration changes, but treat the publisher’s current store and support text as the baseline claim.
- Confirm your platform and edition. A console release, a collection and a standalone Steam port can have different multiplayer options even when their titles look similar.
Setting up one or two controllers on Steam
Before launching the game
- Connect each controller by USB first if possible. Wired setup removes Bluetooth pairing and battery issues from the first test.
- Open Steam’s controller settings and confirm that Steam detects each device. If Steam shows a device type or layout, select the profile that best matches the controller’s physical buttons.
- Open the game’s properties and review the Controller section. The available override determines whether Steam Input is enabled, disabled or left to the game’s default.
- Start the game with only one controller connected and open its input or options menu. Assign player one, save the setting, then connect or enable the second device and assign player two.
- Enter the local or co-op mode and test every direction, action button, pause function and shoulder button before beginning a long session.
Menu names can change as Steam updates its client, and some ports read controller assignments only at launch. If a second pad is ignored, quit the game, connect both devices before relaunching, and repeat the in-game assignment rather than assuming the hardware is unsupported.
Modern-controller caveats
A named legacy pad is evidence, not a universal guarantee
Ikaruga’s Xbox 360 wording tells you what the listing explicitly recognizes. It does not certify every current Xbox-style pad, a PlayStation controller, a Switch-style controller or an unbranded device. Button labels can also differ: a game may display an Xbox-oriented A/B layout while Steam Input maps a controller with different printed symbols.

Bluetooth adds another failure point
Wireless pairing, competing devices and operating-system profiles can prevent a controller from appearing consistently. Test with USB, then move to Bluetooth after the game works. If only one of two wireless pads appears, check that the operating system and Steam both list both devices before changing the game’s bindings.

Steam Input can translate a device into a layout an older game understands, but an incorrect template can create duplicate buttons, missing triggers or a cursor that moves through menus. Compare the game’s native-controller option with a Steam Input profile one at a time. Change one setting, relaunch if required, and record which player receives each input.

The game shows only one player
- Verify that the title advertises local or shared/split-screen play rather than online multiplayer.
- Look for a separate “two players,” “co-op” or “versus” selection after starting a new game; some ports do not expose player two on the main menu.
- Disconnect extra keyboards, virtual controllers and duplicate Bluetooth entries, then test with the intended devices only.
Both controllers move player one
- Open the game’s control assignment screen and bind player two explicitly.
- Check Steam Input’s per-game layout for duplicate bindings or a template that combines devices.
- Restart after assigning devices; older ports may read the controller list only during startup.
A controller works in menus but not in gameplay
- Confirm that the game has separate menu and gameplay bindings.
- Try the input method named by the listing first; for Ikaruga, that includes the Xbox 360 controller, keyboard and mouse.
- Test a wired connection to separate a mapping problem from Bluetooth interference.
The buttons are labeled incorrectly
Choose an Xbox-style layout in Steam Input when the game expects Xbox labels, or remap the actions in the game itself. Judge success by the in-game action, not by whether the printed letters match the on-screen prompts.

How to choose a port for couch play
| Your priority | Evidence to require | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| Two people at one PC | Explicit “local,” “shared/split-screen,” or “local co-op” wording | Separates couch play from online or remote multiplayer. |
| Two independent controllers | A player count plus clear input assignments or support notes | A one-controller mode may not provide separate-device support. |
| Use of a current pad | Named model, current support note, or successful Steam Input configuration | Generic “controller” language does not identify a device family. |
| Mixed keyboard and pad | Keyboard and controller listed together, followed by an in-game assignment test | Some ports reserve one input type for player one unless remapped. |
If a store page answers only one of these questions, treat the other answers as unknown rather than inferred. For the documented examples, Ikaruga provides the most specific evidence: local two-player play, a one-controller mode, and named Xbox 360, keyboard and mouse inputs. The two anniversary collections establish friend or shared co-op at a broader level, while leaving controller-model and per-title details for the individual game page and its settings.
Bottom line for buying and setup decisions
Classic arcade shooter ports on Steam can absolutely support local multiplayer and gamepads, but support is not standardized across the catalog. Ikaruga is a confirmed local two-player example and even offers one-controller Double Play Mode. Contra Anniversary Collection and Arcade Classics Anniversary Collection describe playing with a friend or shared/split-screen co-op, yet their cited pages do not identify a complete modern-controller matrix. Read the exact listing, distinguish local play from online features, and test controller assignment with Steam Input before inviting a second player.
