Sometimes—but there is no universal save system. A browser game may keep progress in cookies or other storage on the current browser and device, or it may attach progress to an online account. Local saves can disappear after site data is cleared, a different browser or device is used, or private browsing blocks storage. An account enables cross-device play only when that particular game actually implements account-backed saving.
There is no single way browser games save progress
Browser games are delivered through a website, but the game developer decides where a save is written and what counts as progress. The same hosting platform can have games with different rules. A saved level, high score, unlocked item, or completed campaign might be persistent, while the state of an unfinished round may last only for the current session.

Guest progress stays with the browser
Poki’s FAQ states: “If you don’t have a Poki account, your game progress is saved in your browser cookies.” Its help information also describes unauthenticated progress as local to the browser. Spil Games says unregistered progress is stored in browser cache and recommends allowing cookies and local storage for its site. Arkadium’s player-support page says, “Most Arkadium games save the player’s progress in the web browser’s local storage.” These statements describe those companies’ services; they are not a rule for every browser game.
Cookies, cache, and local storage are different browser mechanisms. Support pages sometimes group them together because all can be affected by browser privacy controls, but deleting one does not necessarily delete the others. A game can use one mechanism, several mechanisms, or an account service instead.

An account can make a save portable
Poki says an optional Poki account stores progress online and lets players continue on a computer, mobile device, or tablet. Arkadium says only particular games can attach progress to an online Arkadium profile, and the player must be signed in. Therefore, seeing a sign-in button on a website does not prove that every game on the site synchronizes saves.
Cloud saving still needs conflict rules
Google’s developer guidance for saved games explains why an account is not an automatic guarantee. A game has to implement cloud saving, decide how guest and cloud records are reconciled, and present a policy when the records disagree. The guidance says developers should not silently overwrite significant guest progress while linking it to existing cloud progress. This is general engineering guidance, not evidence that ordinary web games use Google Play Games Services.
Will progress survive when you close the browser?
Closing a tab or browser normally does not remove a persistent cookie or local-storage entry. If the game wrote the save as persistent data, reopening the same game in the same browser profile may restore it. That behavior is different from temporary session state, such as the exact position in an unfinished round, which may be discarded when the session ends.
Games also save different kinds of information for different lengths of time. Arkadium notes that game type determines what is saved; one title might retain completed levels or a profile score while another keeps only a short-term match state. Check the individual game’s help text rather than assuming that every action is recoverable.

Why browser-game progress disappears
Cookies or site data were cleared
Removing cookies, cached site data, or local-storage entries can erase a guest save or make it inaccessible. Browser cleanup tools may remove this information automatically. Before using a privacy reset, disk-cleanup utility, or browser setting that deletes data on exit, identify whether the game relies on local storage.
You changed the browser or device
A local record belongs to the browser profile where it was created. Moving from one browser to another, creating a new browser profile, reinstalling the browser, or switching from a computer to a phone can leave that record behind. An account-backed implementation is required for supported cross-device recovery.
Private browsing or blocked storage prevented a save
Poki explicitly warns that private browsing can stop progress from being saved and also cautions that cookie blockers may interfere. Spil recommends enabling cookies and local storage. Browser behavior varies, so treat incognito or private mode as a possible cause rather than a universal explanation.

An online save is associated with a specific account or profile. Signing out, using a different email address, or selecting another platform profile can make a valid save appear missing. Verify the account identity before starting a new game or linking data.

Guest data was replaced during account linking
Spil warns that unregistered progress can be lost when a player logs in. If a game already has cloud data, linking a guest record may require choosing which version to keep. Read the full confirmation dialog and stop if it does not clearly identify the surviving save.

How to protect a save before clearing data or changing devices
- Identify the save type. Open the game’s help, profile, or settings screen and look for wording such as account sync, cloud save, local save, export, or backup. Do not infer the method from the existence of a general platform account.
- Link the correct account if the game supports it. Confirm the account name or email shown in the game. If a prompt asks whether to keep local or online progress, read both choices before selecting one.
- Use an explicit export or backup feature. If the game provides a save code, download, or other export, follow that game’s instructions and store the result somewhere you can access later. Do not assume a generic browser backup can reconstruct a proprietary save.
- Verify the link. After connecting an account, refresh the game or sign in on a second supported device only if the game’s instructions say that is safe. Confirm that the expected level, score, or profile appears before deleting local data.
- Delay cleanup. Leave cookies and site storage enabled for the game. Exclude the site from automatic deletion rules when your browser offers per-site exceptions.
- Record game-specific limits. Note whether the game saves completed levels, currency, scores, or only selected milestones. This prevents treating an intentionally unsaved match state as data loss.
Can you continue on another device?
Only when the game’s implementation supports an online profile or another transfer method. Poki documents cross-device continuation for progress stored in a Poki account. Arkadium lists games that can save to an online Arkadium profile. A guest save held in one browser cannot be presumed portable.
- On the original device, open the game’s account or profile controls.
- Sign in or create the account specified by that game, not merely any account offered by the hosting site.
- Read the linking message for a local-versus-cloud choice; preserve the record that contains your current progress.
- On the new device, use the same browser account or platform profile and sign in to the same game account.
- Check the progress before clearing the original device’s site data.
If the game has no account, export, or recovery option, changing devices may mean starting over. That limitation is a property of the game’s design, not a browser failure.
What to do when a save is missing
- Reopen the exact game on the original setup. Use the same device, browser, browser profile, and game URL. This tests whether the record is local rather than gone.
- Check storage permissions. Allow cookies and site data for the game, disable private browsing, and review extensions that block scripts, cookies, or storage. Reload only after changing the setting.
- Confirm the account. If the game uses profiles, sign out and back in with the account that originally held the save. Arkadium specifically recommends checking the signed-in profile for account-based progress.
- Look for an in-game recovery or import control. Use only instructions supplied by that game or platform. Do not enter a save code into an unrelated site.
- Contact the platform’s support team with precise details. Include the game title, device, browser, account identifier, and when the progress disappeared, but never send a password.
Recovery is platform-specific. Arkadium says most lost local saves cannot be restored by support, with Word Hunt identified as an exception. A support agent therefore cannot generally recreate a deleted browser-local record.

Cookies, cache, and local storage: what the terms mean
Cookies
Cookies are small values a website asks the browser to store and return on later requests. A game may use them for a guest identifier or progress data, subject to size and privacy limits. Deleting the site’s cookies can remove that identifier even if other browser data remains.
Cache
The cache primarily holds downloaded resources so pages can load faster. Spil’s support page describes unregistered progress as being in browser cache, but consumer-facing wording may use cache broadly for locally retained site data. Do not assume that clearing only images and scripts will remove—or preserve—a save.
Web storage
Local storage gives a site a browser-managed key-value store that normally persists across visits in the same browser profile. Arkadium identifies it as the mechanism used by most of its games. It is still local: changing the profile, device, or site-data permissions can make the entries unavailable.

What the major platform examples actually establish
Poki’s FAQ, accessed October 12, 2026, covers a platform with more than 1,700 web games and a company-reported audience of more than 100 million monthly players. Those figures describe platform scale, not the reliability or portability of every save. The FAQ distinguishes browser-cookie saves for guests from online progress for Poki accounts.

Spil Games’ support article recommends allowing cookies and local storage and warns that unregistered progress can be lost when logging in. That is a service-specific warning, so apply it to the particular Spil game rather than every website.
Arkadium’s player-support article, modified September 23, 2026, says most of its games use browser local storage and explains that games differ in what they save. Its support guidance also documents the limited recovery prospects for deleted local data.
Google’s Cloud save guidance, last updated October 6, 2026 UTC, is written for developers. It is useful for understanding guest/cloud conflict handling, but it does not show that a particular browser game uses that service.

A practical checklist before you start playing seriously
- Use a normal browser window rather than private mode.
- Allow cookies and site storage for the game.
- Find out whether progress is local, account-backed, or both.
- Sign in before investing time if the game explicitly supports cloud saves.
- Check which account or profile is active.
- Read any local-versus-cloud prompt before linking.
- Avoid clearing the game’s site data until a transfer or recovery method is verified.
- Keep the original browser profile available until the new device displays the expected save.
The safest assumption is that a browser game saves only according to its own documented design. Closing the browser is usually less dangerous than clearing site data, but neither local persistence nor account portability should be promised without confirmation from that game’s help page or settings.
