No. A belt-drive e-bike can be single-speed, because the belt only transfers power and does not determine how many ratios the bike has. Gears become valuable when you ride steep hills, carry cargo, start frequently, or want to keep your pedaling cadence comfortable over a wide speed range.
An internal-gear hub puts those ratios inside the rear hub. That keeps the belt line clean and protected while allowing one or more selectable gears. The right choice depends on terrain, total load, motor characteristics, and how much mechanical complexity you are willing to maintain.
What the belt does—and what gears do
A belt-drive system and a gearing system solve different problems. The belt is the final power-transfer link between the crank and the rear wheel. It uses a toothed belt and matching sprockets rather than a roller chain, so it does not require chain oil. Gearing changes the mechanical advantage between your pedals, the motor-assisted crank, and the rear wheel.
Because those functions are separate, a belt-drive e-bike can be built in any of three common ways:

- Other multi-ratio arrangements: a belt-compatible transmission or a system designed around a different type of rear gearing.
A single-speed belt bike is mechanically simple and can work very well on relatively flat routes with a light rider-and-bike load. It becomes less flexible when the route includes sustained climbs, frequent stops, heavy cargo, or a broad range of cruising speeds. A lower ratio makes starts and climbs easier; a higher ratio lets you keep pedaling efficiently at faster speeds. The motor can help with hills, but it does not eliminate the rider’s need for a usable cadence or the system’s need to stay within its intended load limits.
When a belt-drive e-bike benefits from gears
Hills and changing gradients
On a climb, a lower gear reduces the force required at the pedals and lets the motor operate without relying on one very high mechanical load. If your route alternates between flat roads and steep ramps, several ratios prevent the compromise of choosing one ratio that is too low for flats or too high for climbs.
Cargo, passengers, and heavy equipment
Added mass increases the force needed to accelerate and climb. A cargo bike used for deliveries may need a much lower starting ratio than the same motor and wheel size used by a lightly loaded commuter. Gears do not increase the motor’s rated output; they give that output more useful leverage at the wheel.

Frequent starts and stop-and-go traffic
Starting in a suitable low ratio is easier on your legs than pushing a tall single-speed ratio from a standstill. An internal hub may also let you select a starting gear while stopped, depending on its design and control system. Confirm that behavior for the exact hub and shifter rather than assuming every model works the same way.

Comfortable cadence across speed
People differ in preferred pedaling cadence. A single ratio can feel comfortable at one speed and awkwardly fast or slow at another. Multiple ratios spread the useful cadence range across urban riding, descents, and faster open-road sections.
How an internal-gear hub works
An internal-gear hub contains one or more enclosed reduction stages inside the rear hub shell. Instead of moving the belt or a derailleur across exposed sprockets, the rider changes the relationship between the hub’s input and its wheel-driving output. The belt continues running on the same front and rear sprockets while the mechanism inside the hub selects a different ratio.
Planetary reduction stages
Most multi-ratio hubs create their ratios through planetary gearsets. A sun gear, surrounding planet gears, and a ring gear can be held, driven, or coupled in different combinations. Each combination changes the speed and torque delivered to the hub shell. Several stages can be combined to provide a wider overall range while remaining sealed within the hub.

Selection can be mechanical, using a cable and shifter, or electronic, using a motorized actuator and a control signal. Shimano documents compatible e-bike systems that can select an optimum gear automatically. Automatic operation is a feature of the complete compatible system, not a promise that every internal hub will shift itself.

What the published ranges mean
Gear range is the span between the lowest and highest ratios, expressed as a percentage of the lowest ratio. A 263% range means the highest ratio is 2.63 times the lowest; it does not mean there are 263 gears. The following figures are current manufacturer specifications, not independent comparative test results.
| Hub example | Ratios | Published overall range | What to understand |
|---|---|---|---|
| Shimano NEXUS INTER-5E | 5 | 263% | A mainstream five-ratio e-bike hub specification from Shimano; the bike still needs compatible belt-line and control components. |
| Rohloff SPEEDHUB 500/14 | 14 | Not stated in the cited product detail | Fourteen ratios in an enclosed hub; exact frame, belt, and e-bike integration requirements apply. |
| Rohloff E-14 | 14 | 526% overall gear range | Rohloff’s current product information gives this range for the E-14; it is a manufacturer figure, not a neutral laboratory comparison. |
A wider range gives you more options, but it can also mean a more complex, heavier, or more expensive system. Choose enough range for your terrain and load rather than treating the largest number as automatically best.
Are belt-drive e-bikes good for hills?
They can be. The belt itself is not the limiting factor on a hill; the relevant choices are the available low ratio, motor and battery system, wheel size, rider input, total mass, and the hub’s specified limits. A single-speed belt e-bike may climb moderate inclines successfully when the ratio, motor assistance, and load are appropriate. It is a poor match when the same fixed ratio forces hard starts or an uncomfortable cadence on sustained grades.
For a hilly route, evaluate the complete setup:
- Lowest available ratio: determines how much leverage you have for starts and climbs.
- Range between low and high: determines whether the bike remains comfortable on both climbs and faster flats.
- Load: include rider, luggage, child seats, trailers, and accessories.
- Motor behavior: assistance can make climbs easier, but it does not replace a suitable mechanical ratio.
- Wheel and tire configuration: these affect the distance traveled per wheel revolution and therefore the effective gearing.
Belt drive with an internal hub versus chain with a derailleur
Neither arrangement is universally superior. The better choice depends on cleanliness, terrain, service access, and the exact bike design.

| Consideration | Belt plus internal-gear hub | Chain plus derailleur |
|---|---|---|
| Lubrication and cleanliness | Gates says its carbon-fiber-reinforced belts eliminate lubrication; the manufacturer summarizes this as: “The need for lubrication is eliminated, reducing upkeep.” | Requires chain lubrication and regular cleaning to control wear and contamination. |
| Where the gears are | Ratios are enclosed in the rear hub, leaving no exposed derailleur cassette to move the belt across. | Ratios are exposed on the rear cassette and selected by moving the chain with a derailleur. |
| Shifting behavior | Some hubs can shift while stopped, and compatible e-bike systems may automate gear selection; exact behavior varies by hub and controls. | Shifting behavior depends on chain movement, derailleur adjustment, and the rider’s timing. |
| Installation requirements | Needs a compatible belt, front and rear sprockets, beltline, frame clearance, tension method, and hub integration. | Uses chain-specific components and a frame designed for derailleur and cassette clearance. |
| Service access | Routine belt care is straightforward, but hub service and belt-system compatibility are specialized. | Replacement chains, cassettes, and derailleur parts are widely familiar, while adjustment is exposed to dirt and impact. |
The belt’s cleanliness advantage does not make the system maintenance-free. Alignment, tension, sprocket condition, and hub service remain important.
Can you replace a chain with a belt?
Usually not as a simple parts swap. A belt is a toothed, continuous loop, so every part of the drive must match. Gates’ e-bike integration guidance calls for selecting the rear hub, front sprocket assembly, rear sprocket, and target beltline as a matched system. Rohloff’s OEM guidance also lists installation constraints for belt-drive SPEEDHUB builds.
Compatibility checks before buying parts
- Confirm that the frame accepts a belt. A conventional chainstay is closed, so a belt cannot be threaded through it. The frame needs a belt-compatible opening or a design that allows installation without damaging the belt.
- Identify the exact hub model and axle arrangement. Internal hubs differ in spacing, mounting, controls, and belt-drive support.
- Match the front and rear sprocket families. Tooth profile and pitch must match the belt. Do not mix visually similar parts without a compatibility specification.
- Measure or verify the beltline. The front and rear sprockets must sit in the same plane. A small lateral offset can cause noise, accelerated wear, or belt derailment.
- Check frame clearance and tension adjustment. The frame must provide room for the belt and a way to set and maintain tension.
- Order by the bike’s markings and specification. For a replacement, record the belt brand and markings, tooth count, length, and sprocket family. Wheel diameter alone does not identify the correct belt.
If any of these details are unknown, obtain the bike maker’s parts specification or have a qualified shop identify the complete system. A chain-to-belt conversion based only on wheel size or a photograph is not reliable.

The belt must be tight enough to engage the sprocket teeth without skipping, but excessive tension can overload bearings, the hub, or the frame. The correct value depends on the belt system and frame, so use the tension specification supplied for your exact belt and bike.

- Switch the drive system off and support the bike securely. Keep fingers, clothing, and tools away from the belt and sprockets.
- Inspect alignment first. Check that both sprockets are parallel and that the belt tracks centrally. Correcting alignment is more important than tightening a misaligned belt.
- Use the frame’s approved adjustment method. This may be sliding dropouts, eccentric hardware, or another built-in system. Do not force the wheel sideways in a frame that was not designed for it.
- Measure with the specified gauge or method. A compatible Gates tensioning tool or gauge can help, but its reading is meaningful only when used according to the belt maker’s instructions.
- Recheck after tightening axle and adjustment fasteners. Fastening the wheel can change the setting. Rotate the cranks and inspect tracking through a full revolution.
- Test under light load, then inspect again. Clicking, tooth skipping, lateral wandering, or unusual resistance indicates that alignment, tension, or component compatibility needs attention.
Never substitute a guessed tension value. If the bike maker gives a procedure that differs from a belt maker’s generic guidance, follow the bike-specific procedure.
Maintenance and service expectations
Belt care
Because the belt does not need chain oil, routine care focuses on keeping abrasive debris from accumulating and checking for damage. Wipe away grit with an appropriate clean, damp cloth and avoid solvents or procedures that the belt maker does not approve. Inspect the teeth for rounding, missing material, cracks, or embedded debris.
Sprockets and beltline
Worn sprocket teeth can make a sound belt skip. Check that sprockets are firmly mounted, free of burrs, and still the correct matched family. Verify beltline whenever a wheel, crank, hub, or sprocket is removed.
Internal hub service
The hub’s gears are enclosed, which protects them from road contamination but does not eliminate the need for the manufacturer’s service schedule. Cable or electronic controls may need adjustment, and internal parts should be serviced with the hub maker’s approved procedure rather than treated like an exposed derailleur.
Choosing the right configuration
Choose single-speed when simplicity is the priority
A single-speed belt e-bike is sensible for mostly flat routes, modest loads, predictable speeds, and riders comfortable with one fixed cadence relationship. There are fewer shifting controls and fewer drivetrain parts to integrate, but the fixed ratio must be chosen carefully.
Choose a multi-ratio hub for varied terrain
An internal hub is the stronger fit for hills, cargo, frequent starts, or riders who want a comfortable cadence at both low and high speeds. Compare the lowest ratio and total range, not just the number of gears. Five ratios with a 263% published range and fourteen ratios with a 526% published range represent different design choices; neither figure alone proves which bike will suit your route.
Choose the complete system, not isolated parts
When comparing bikes, evaluate the belt, sprockets, frame opening, tension adjustment, hub, shifter, motor controls, and service support together. A premium hub cannot compensate for an incompatible beltline, and a clean belt cannot compensate for gearing that is too tall for your hills and load.
Quick Recap
Common problems and practical fixes
- Belt skips under acceleration: stop riding hard until you check tension, alignment, worn teeth, and whether the belt and sprockets are a matched specification.
- Belt walks toward one side: inspect sprocket parallelism, axle seating, and frame alignment before changing tension.
- Pedaling feels too hard on climbs: determine whether the bike is single-speed or in a high hub ratio; select a lower ratio if available and reassess total load and assistance settings.
- Cadence feels too fast on flats: select a higher ratio or consider whether the fixed single-speed ratio suits your normal speed.
- A replacement belt does not fit: compare belt markings, tooth count, length, pitch, sprocket family, and beltline. Do not infer fit from wheel diameter.
- Shifting does not match expectations: verify the exact hub and control system. Automatic selection and shifting while stopped are system-specific features, not universal internal-hub behavior.
