No—Arlo cameras do not universally need a paid subscription to keep working. On supported models, live streaming, push notifications, two-way audio and local recording can remain available after a trial ends. The main difference is that cloud Video History and features such as Activity Zones generally require a plan or trial.

What you can do without paying depends on the camera model and, for cloud plans, your country. Local recording is not the same as Arlo cloud recording: it is available only on supported devices and usually requires a compatible Arlo SmartHub or base station.

What continues to work without an Arlo subscription?

When an Arlo trial ends, a compatible camera does not necessarily become unusable. Arlo lists live streaming, push notifications and two-way audio among the functions that may remain available without a plan. Supported devices may also retain local storage recording. These are model-dependent capabilities, not a promise that every Arlo camera will provide the same free features.

The distinction that matters most is between getting an alert and keeping a recording. A push notification can tell you that an event occurred, and live streaming can let you check the camera, but neither means a clip is being saved to Arlo’s cloud. Arlo identifies cloud Video History and Activity Zones as features unavailable without a plan or trial. Check the camera’s supported features and the account’s current plan details before assuming an alert includes a retrievable video.

Cloud recording, local recording, and live view are different

Cloud Video History

Cloud Video History stores event clips through an Arlo subscription plan. Its resolution, retention period, supported detections and camera limits depend on the plan and market. Without a plan or trial, Arlo says Video History is unavailable for the applicable current product families. That means you should not treat cloud clip access as a standard free feature simply because the camera continues sending alerts.

Local storage

Local recording stores footage on supported hardware rather than in Arlo’s cloud. Arlo says local storage recording remains available for some devices, and that most cameras need an Arlo SmartHub or base station. Compatibility is specific to the camera and hub/base-station model, so confirm both before buying storage hardware or expecting recordings to work.

The Arlo Ultra manual describes local storage through the Ultra SmartHub using a microSD card, sold separately. That example does not establish that every Arlo hub accepts a microSD card or that every camera can record locally. Consult the documentation for the exact camera and hub combination; do not assume that a device supporting local recording uses the same storage medium as Ultra.

Local storage is also not a substitute name for cloud Video History. It is a separate recording route with its own hardware and compatibility requirements. The manual’s specific guidance is in the Arlo Ultra User Manual.

Live viewing and alerts

Live streaming and push notifications can remain useful even when cloud clips are not being retained. But if you need to review what happened after an alert, establish in advance whether your camera saves a local recording, whether it supports the required hub or base station, or whether your plan provides cloud Video History. A live view alone cannot show an event that has already passed.

Arlo plan features and retention: Europe and UK terms

The following comparison reflects Arlo’s Europe/UK-facing support page, last updated 30 March 2026. It is not a global price or feature guarantee: Arlo plan names, availability, retention and limits can vary by country and change over time. Use your location’s current plan selector to confirm terms; prices are not included here because the cited comparison does not establish a current price for every reader’s market.

Option on the cited Europe/UK page Cloud recording and retention Camera limit and listed features
Arlo Secure Up to 2K cloud recording; clips saved for up to 7 days Single-camera plans support one camera. Multi-camera plans support up to four cameras at one residential location. Listed features include person, vehicle, animal and package detection, plus cloud Activity Zones.
Arlo Secure Plus Up to 4K cloud recording; clips saved for up to 14 days Unlimited cameras at one location. Includes Secure features and the listed recognition/detection features. Extended-warranty eligibility is described for Europe only and has additional conditions.
Arlo Secure Pro Up to 4K cloud recording; clips saved for up to 30 days Unlimited cameras at one location. Includes Plus features and an SOS button.
No plan, for supported devices No general current-family cloud Video History; local recording may be available on supported devices Live streaming, push notifications and two-way audio may remain. Capabilities depend on model; certain legacy devices are a documented exception.

These are product specifications stated by Arlo for its Europe/UK comparison, not independent test results. “Up to” matters: it describes the maximum listed recording resolution or retention period, not a guarantee that every camera, clip or account will use the maximum. The location and camera limits in the table also belong to the cited page’s plan terms. Read Arlo’s Europe/UK plan and cloud-recording comparison and verify what your own country offers before choosing a plan.

Continuous Video Recording is a separate option

Continuous Video Recording (CVR) is distinct from event-based cloud clips and from local recording. Arlo says some cameras can record continuously to the cloud when plugged into AC power, and a CVR plan is required for each camera. Do not infer that an ordinary Secure plan, a local-storage setup or a camera’s ability to save event clips includes 24/7 cloud recording.

Important model-specific exceptions

Tracking features differ by camera

Arlo lists Auto Zoom & Tracking among functions that may remain after a trial, while also noting it is not available on every device. Essential Pan Tilt cameras are a specific exception: they do not support Auto Zoom & Tracking, and their Auto Track feature requires a trial or subscription. The similarly named features should not be treated as interchangeable or assumed to follow identical plan rules.

Some legacy cameras have a different free-cloud allowance

Arlo’s Europe/UK plan page identifies a legacy group—including Pro, Pro 2, Q/Q+, Go, Baby and original Wire-Free models—that retains seven-day free cloud recording in up to 1080p, with a maximum of five cameras. This is a documented exception for the listed older devices, not a general free-cloud offer for current cameras. Confirm that the exact model and account qualify rather than applying the legacy allowance to a newer camera.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

For a broader overview of subscription features, Arlo also maintains its Arlo Secure Subscriptions support page. Because support pages and plan terms can be updated, use the model-specific documentation and local plan page when they differ in scope.

How to decide whether paying is worthwhile

Start with what you need to do after an event, not just whether the camera can send an alert. A subscription is most relevant when you need Arlo cloud history, longer cloud retention, higher listed cloud resolution, plan-based detections or cloud Activity Zones. If you only need live viewing and notifications, a paid plan may not be necessary for a supported camera—but decide how, if at all, you will retain recordings.

  1. Identify the exact camera model. Use its model-specific documentation to verify which functions remain without a plan, whether local recording is supported, and whether tracking or other features have special requirements.
  2. Choose where footage needs to be stored. If cloud clip history is important, compare the current local plan terms. If local recording is acceptable, verify the compatible SmartHub or base station and the required storage medium before relying on it.
  3. Set the retention and resolution you actually need. Compare the local plan’s listed resolution and clip-retention period with your needs. The Europe/UK figures above do not establish the terms available in other markets.
  4. Check feature and camera-count requirements. Confirm that the plan includes detections or zones you rely on, and that its camera limit and location/account conditions fit your setup. Do not assume that a feature listed for one tier applies to every model.
  5. Decide whether you need continuous recording. If you want 24/7 cloud recording, check camera compatibility, AC-power requirements and the separate CVR plan requirement for each camera.

For example, a household that only wants to open a live feed and receive alerts may be able to use supported cameras without a paid plan. Someone who needs to search past cloud clips, use cloud Activity Zones or retain recordings for a specified period should check the appropriate subscription. A person who wants recording without cloud history should first verify local-recording compatibility and hardware rather than assuming the camera stores clips internally.

Common subscription misunderstandings

  • “No subscription means the camera stops working.” Not universally. Arlo lists several functions that may continue, but the exact set depends on the device.
  • “An alert means a clip is saved.” Not necessarily. Notifications, live streaming and cloud Video History are different functions.
  • “Local storage works on every Arlo camera.” It does not. Arlo says only some devices support local recording, and most require a SmartHub or base station.
  • “Any Arlo plan provides the same retention everywhere.” Plan terms are regional. The 2K/7-day, 4K/14-day and 4K/30-day specifications cited here are from Arlo’s Europe/UK page, not universal terms.
  • “A plan that supports several cameras includes unlimited cameras.” Not necessarily. On the cited Europe/UK page, Secure multi-camera supports up to four cameras at one residential location, whereas Secure Plus and Pro list unlimited cameras at one location.
  • “Event recording includes 24/7 cloud recording.” No. Arlo treats CVR as a separate option, with a CVR plan required for each camera and AC power required for supported cameras.

Bottom line

Arlo subscriptions are optional for basic operation on supported models, but not for every feature readers may expect. Decide between cloud history, compatible local recording and live viewing based on your exact camera and recording needs; then verify current plan terms for your country.
