Short answer: Android XR glasses have cameras and microphones so Gemini can understand what you are looking at when you invoke an assistant feature, and Google has demonstrated deliberate photo and video capture. Google has not said that every frame is continuously recorded while the glasses are idle.
What happens to media you share depends on the glasses model, paired phone, Google account settings and the Gemini feature in use. Keep Activity and the separate control for using audio and Gemini Live video or screen shares to improve Google services affect different parts of storage and review.
What Google has confirmed about Android XR cameras
Google’s May 23, 2025 Android XR demonstration described glasses “equipped with a camera and microphones,” with speakers that let you listen to Gemini, music and calls. The announcement showed Gemini using camera context for tasks such as identifying or translating what is in front of you, giving directions, sending messages and taking photographs.
A later Android XR announcement separates intelligent eyewear into audio glasses and display glasses. Google says audio glasses can answer questions about what you see and can “snap high-quality photos and videos instantly” by command. Its December 2025 Android Show update likewise described screen-free AI glasses with built-in cameras, microphones and speakers, while display glasses add an in-lens display.

Those statements establish camera hardware, voice-and-camera assistance and intentional capture. They do not establish a policy of continuously recording the wearer’s field of view when no feature is active.
Camera access is not the same as continuous recording
When Gemini is asked to understand a scene
To answer a question such as “What does this sign say?” or “Which train platform is shown?”, Gemini needs visual input from the glasses camera. The camera may provide frames or a video stream for the active interaction, and the microphones provide audio when the feature requires it. This is contextual sensing for an invoked function, not proof that a permanent video archive is being made.
When you explicitly capture a photo or video
Google has demonstrated commands for taking photos and videos. An intentional capture is different from the short-lived visual input used to answer a question: it creates media that must be delivered somewhere, such as the glasses, a paired phone or a Google service. The exact destination and capacity are model-specific and have not been published as one universal Android XR rule.

When the assistant is idle
No cited Google announcement says that Android XR glasses save every scene continuously while idle. Avoid treating the presence of a camera, a wake-word listener or an assistant standby state as evidence of an always-on recording policy. A final product manual should be the authority for a particular model’s capture behavior.
What “Gemini information” can include
Google’s Gemini Apps Privacy Notice lists “transcripts and recordings of your interactions with Gemini Live (including audio, video and screens you share with Live)” as information users provide to Gemini. If glasses send camera video to Gemini Live, that interaction falls under the notice’s Gemini-information rules. A still photo or video captured by a glasses command may also be copied to another service, but Google has not published a single storage map covering every future model.
Standby and accidental activation
The same privacy notice says Gemini is designed to wait in standby until activation. It also warns that recordings can begin a few seconds before activation and that accidental activations can occur. This wording is for Gemini Apps generally; it is not a glasses-specific promise about hardware buffers, indicator lights or how long a particular model keeps data.
Where photos and Live media may be stored
There is no published, universal Android XR storage capacity or retention period. Storage can depend on the eyewear model, its companion phone, the Google service handling the request and your account settings. Until a model’s manual specifies otherwise, do not assume that captured media stays only on the frames or only in the cloud.

| Data or action | What is established | What remains model- or account-specific |
|---|---|---|
| Camera context for a Gemini question | Camera input can help Gemini understand what you see. | Whether frames are buffered locally, sent through a phone, or handled by a cloud service. |
| Gemini Live video | Video shared with Live is covered as Gemini information in Google’s privacy notice. | Retention duration, processing path and any local cache on the glasses. |
| Explicit photo or video capture | Google has demonstrated capture by command. | File format, local capacity, phone sync, cloud backup and deletion workflow. |
| Display glasses | Google says display models add an in-lens display to the camera, microphone and speaker functions. | Final hardware, recording indicator and regional configuration. |
Because these values are not stated for all models, a claim such as “the glasses hold 32 GB” or “videos are deleted after 30 days” would be unreliable without a model-specific specification.
Two privacy controls that are easy to confuse
Audio and Gemini Live media improvement setting
Google lets you choose whether audio and Gemini Live videos or screen shares can be used to improve Google services, including training generative-AI models. When this setting is on, Google says some such media may be reviewed by human reviewers. Turning it off prevents future use for that improvement purpose, but it does not prevent Gemini from processing the media needed to answer your request or help keep the service safe.
Keep Activity
Keep Activity is a separate control governing transcripts and other content associated with Gemini activity. Changing the improvement setting does not automatically change Keep Activity, and changing Keep Activity does not mean that an active Live session cannot process incoming audio or video. Review both settings and delete stored activity when appropriate.
How to reduce what Gemini keeps
- Review permissions. On the phone connected to the glasses, open the Google and Gemini app permission pages and check camera, microphone, location and connected-app access. Remove permissions that a feature does not need.
- Open Gemini Apps Activity. Review the activity controls for the Google account paired with the glasses. Confirm whether Keep Activity is enabled and choose the available auto-delete or manual-delete option that fits your needs.
- Change improvement use separately. In the Gemini Apps privacy controls, decide whether audio and Gemini Live videos or screen shares may improve Google services. Remember that switching this off does not stop response generation or safety processing for future sessions.
- Delete existing records. Remove Gemini activity you no longer want retained. Deleting account activity does not necessarily erase a photo already copied to a phone gallery or another backup, so check those destinations too.
- Check the eyewear manual. For a specific model, verify whether capture files remain on the frames, transfer to the phone, sync to a cloud photo library or are discarded after processing.
- End Live sessions deliberately. Stop Gemini Live when you finish sharing a scene, rather than leaving an active session running while you move through private spaces.
Is there a recording light or physical shutter?
Google has said it is gathering trusted-tester feedback to build glasses that respect the wearer and people nearby. The announcements cited for Android XR do not define one final recording light, LED behavior, audible alert, physical shutter or universal indicator for every model. A camera-equipped frame may therefore have different signals from another model.
Before buying or wearing a particular pair, look for documentation answering these questions:
- What visible or audible signal appears during photo capture?
- Does the signal stay on for the entire time Gemini Live receives video?
- Can the wearer disable or dim the indicator?
- Is there a hardware shutter, a software camera switch or neither?
- Can a bystander tell when a capture is occurring from normal viewing distance?
Until a manufacturer publishes those details, treat the indicator design as unknown rather than assuming that a small status light is present.
Privacy responsibilities around other people
Even if a glasses feature is not continuously recording, using a camera in public can affect people who did not choose to participate. Ask before recording in private conversations, workplaces, classrooms, medical settings or homes. Follow local consent, workplace and recording laws; those rules differ by jurisdiction and can apply to an ordinary phone camera as well as wearable eyewear.

Use the least intrusive mode that solves the task. For example, ask Gemini to read a sign, then end the interaction instead of keeping Live video open. Avoid pointing the camera at confidential documents, payment cards, children or screens containing personal information unless there is a clear reason and permission.

| Characteristic | Audio glasses | Display glasses |
|---|---|---|
| Camera and microphones | Used for Gemini context and commanded photos or videos. | Used for the same functions, with an added visual output. |

The display category changes how answers are presented, not the basic privacy conclusion: camera hardware and visual assistance do not by themselves prove that every frame is recorded.
Availability and regional caveats
Google’s 2026 announcement said audio glasses were planned for later fall 2026 and named eyewear designs from Gentle Monster and Warby Parker. Its December 2025 update described the first AI glasses as arriving the following year. These are announcement timelines, not a guarantee that a finished model is purchasable in every country on October 17, 2026, or that all announced capabilities ship together.
Availability, phone compatibility, supported languages, Gemini features, storage paths and privacy controls can vary by model and region. Check the final product page, setup flow and user manual for the country where you will use the glasses.
A practical checklist before you buy or activate a pair
- Confirm whether the model is audio-only or includes an in-lens display.
- Find the exact photo and video command and whether capture can be disabled.
- Identify where files are saved first: glasses, phone or cloud service.
- Check whether Gemini Live video is enabled by default and how to end a session.
- Locate the recording indicator, shutter or audible alert and test it before use around others.
- Review Gemini Apps Activity, Keep Activity and the separate improvement-use control.
- Verify phone operating-system requirements, account requirements and country availability.
- Read the deletion instructions for both Gemini activity and copied media on the phone.
What is still unknown
Google has not published independent statistics on continuous recording, storage duration or privacy incidents for Android XR glasses. It also has not provided one storage-capacity number, one retention schedule or one recording-indicator design covering every model. Those omissions are important: they mean a precise answer requires the exact glasses model and its software version.
The reliable conclusion today is narrower and more useful. Android XR glasses are built to see and hear when Gemini features use their cameras and microphones, and they can intentionally take photos and videos. Google has not stated that they continuously record everything in view while idle. Shared Live media and related transcripts can be governed by Gemini privacy settings, with Keep Activity and improvement use operating separately.
