DNS, the Domain Name System, translates a domain name into the information an internet service needs—often an IP address for a website. It is a distributed, hierarchical system: your device asks a recursive resolver, which can use a cached answer or follow referrals to a server authoritative for the requested domain.

What DNS does

Computers and other internet services use records associated with names to find the information they need. DNS organizes those names and records in a tree-shaped namespace, divided into managed portions called zones. It is not one central server or a permanent phone book: different DNS servers hold authoritative data for particular zones, while resolvers can also cache data learned from elsewhere.

A DNS query asks for a particular kind of record. A website lookup often seeks an IP address, but DNS also carries information used by services such as email. The DNS standards describe the namespace and resource records, name servers, and resolvers as its major components. IETF RFC 1034 and IETF RFC 1035 define the core concepts and implementation.

How a DNS lookup works

Here is a simplified example: you enter www.example.com in a browser. The actual route can differ depending on cached data, aliases, delegation, the requested record type, and errors; not every lookup makes the same number of network requests.

TP-Link AX1800 WiFi 6 Router (Archer AX21 V5)
  • DUAL-BAND WIFI 6 ROUTER: Wi-Fi 6(802.11ax) technology achieves faster speeds, greater capacity and reduced network congestion compared to the previous gen. All WiFi routers require a separate modem. Dual-Band WiFi routers do not support the 6 GHz band.
  • AX1800: Enjoy smoother and more stable streaming, gaming, downloading with 1.8 Gbps total bandwidth (up to 1200 Mbps on 5 GHz and up to 574 Mbps on 2.4 GHz). Performance varies by conditions, distance to devices, and obstacles such as walls.
  • CONNECT MORE DEVICES: Wi-Fi 6 technology communicates more data to more devices simultaneously using revolutionary OFDMA technology
  • EXTENSIVE COVERAGE: Achieve the strong, reliable WiFi coverage with Archer AX1800 as it focuses signal strength to your devices far away using Beamforming technology, 4 high-gain antennas and an advanced front-end module (FEM) chipset
  • OUR CYBERSECURITY COMMITMENT: TP-Link is a signatory of the U.S. Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency’s (CISA) Secure-by-Design pledge. This device is designed, built, and maintained, with advanced security as a core requirement.
  1. Your device asks a resolver. The device’s stub resolver sends the query to its configured recursive resolver, commonly provided by a network, service provider, or another DNS service.
  2. The resolver checks its cache. If it has a suitable, unexpired answer, it can return that without repeating the upstream lookup.
  3. If needed, the resolver follows referrals. A root server directs it toward the relevant top-level domain (TLD), such as .com. A TLD server then directs it toward the authoritative name servers for the domain.
  4. An authoritative server supplies the zone’s data. The resolver asks a server responsible for the relevant zone for the requested record. The answer may include an address or alias information that requires additional lookups.
  5. The resolver replies and may cache the result. It sends the answer or an error back to the device and can retain data for its configured cache lifetime.

Root and TLD servers generally provide referrals that move the lookup toward the right authority; they are not usually the final source of a website’s requested record. Cloudflare’s DNS overview explains these resolver and server roles, while ICANN’s explanation of DNS root service operations describes how root service directs resolvers toward TLD servers.

Recursive resolver vs. authoritative name server

Role What it does Typical data and place in a lookup
Recursive resolver Finds an answer or error on behalf of the client. Checks cached data and, when needed, gathers information through referrals. It is usually the client’s first DNS service.
Authoritative name server Serves DNS records for the zone or zones it is responsible for. Provides authoritative zone data when the resolver reaches the server responsible for the requested name.

These roles are different even though both involve DNS servers. RFC 1034 distinguishes recursive service, which returns an answer or error for the client, from non-recursive service, which can return local data or a referral.

What DNS records contain

The record type tells DNS what kind of information the query seeks. Common examples include:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • A: an IPv4 address record.
  • AAAA: an IPv6 address record.
  • MX: information used to route email for a domain.
  • CNAME: an alias that points one name to another name.

Because these records answer different questions, a DNS response is not always a website IP address. An alias or delegation can also mean that resolving one name involves additional names and queries.

  • COVERAGE IN EVERY ROOM: Covers up to 1,500 sq. ft. for up to 20 connected devices. Walls, floors, and interference can reduce range. Larger or multi-story homes may benefit from a NETGEAR Orbi mesh WiFi system.

Why cached answers matter

Resolvers cache DNS data for a configured lifetime. Reusing a valid cached answer can make a later lookup faster and avoid repeating the full referral path. Once the cache lifetime expires, the resolver may need to obtain fresh data.

This is why a DNS change may not appear everywhere at once. Different resolvers can have different cached data and expiration times, and their behavior can vary. There is no single propagation time that applies to every DNS change.

What DNSSEC protects—and what it does not

Ordinary DNS does not by itself strongly authenticate responses. DNS Security Extensions (DNSSEC) let a validating resolver check the origin and integrity of DNS data by verifying signatures and following a chain of trust through signed delegations to a configured trust anchor. ICANN explains that the DNS data is signed by its owner; DNS queries and responses themselves are not encrypted by DNSSEC. ICANN’s DNSSEC overview describes the protection and its limits.
