A DNS change can make websites begin loading sooner when lookups are a meaningful part of the delay. It does not increase your internet plan’s bandwidth, and it will not fix every kind of slow connection. Whether another resolver helps depends on your network, location, routing and the domains you visit.

What DNS can—and cannot—speed up

When you open a website, your device uses the Domain Name System (DNS) to find the network address associated with a domain name. The browser can then connect to that address. A lookup adds some work before a request can proceed; if it takes unusually long, the start of a website visit can feel sluggish.

A page may depend on several hostnames for its main document and for resources such as images, scripts, fonts or video. Lookups can happen in parallel, but a slow lookup can still delay the resource that depends on it. Google’s performance guidance explains why DNS can be a noticeable part of loading some resource-heavy pages.

Changing resolvers does not make your internet connection’s available bandwidth higher. It is therefore not a general fix for consistently low download or upload speeds, buffering, or high latency across different apps. Those symptoms can have other causes, including Wi-Fi conditions, network congestion, routing, the device or the service you are trying to reach.

TP-Link AX1800 WiFi 6 Router (Archer AX21 V5)
  • DUAL-BAND WIFI 6 ROUTER: Wi-Fi 6(802.11ax) technology achieves faster speeds, greater capacity and reduced network congestion compared to the previous gen. All WiFi routers require a separate modem. Dual-Band WiFi routers do not support the 6 GHz band.
  • AX1800: Enjoy smoother and more stable streaming, gaming, downloading with 1.8 Gbps total bandwidth (up to 1200 Mbps on 5 GHz and up to 574 Mbps on 2.4 GHz). Performance varies by conditions, distance to devices, and obstacles such as walls.
  • CONNECT MORE DEVICES: Wi-Fi 6 technology communicates more data to more devices simultaneously using revolutionary OFDMA technology
  • EXTENSIVE COVERAGE: Achieve the strong, reliable WiFi coverage with Archer AX1800 as it focuses signal strength to your devices far away using Beamforming technology, 4 high-gain antennas and an advanced front-end module (FEM) chipset
  • OUR CYBERSECURITY COMMITMENT: TP-Link is a signatory of the U.S. Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency’s (CISA) Secure-by-Design pledge. This device is designed, built, and maintained, with advanced security as a core requirement.

How to tell whether DNS is part of the problem

Start with the symptom

  • Possible DNS issue: websites pause before they begin to load, or name lookups occasionally fail.
  • Look beyond DNS: downloads remain slow after they start, video buffers, or multiple applications have high latency. DNS may still play a role in some cases, but these symptoms alone do not establish that it is the cause.

Measure name lookups, not just ping

Use a DNS measurement tool to compare lookup times for a broad set of domains. Test from the same device and network, and compare your current resolver with one or more alternatives. Repeat the comparison if conditions vary, and consider the domains you actually use rather than judging a resolver from one lookup.

Ping and traceroute can help check reachability or locate network delays, but they do not directly measure how quickly a resolver completes DNS lookups. Google Public DNS documentation makes this distinction explicitly. A low ping time to a resolver is not proof that it will resolve names faster for you.

Interpret comparisons in context

Resolver performance can vary with network distance, routing, cache state and how many nameservers need to be queried. A public resolver may be farther away or reached by a less efficient route than your ISP’s resolver, so a well-known service is not automatically the fastest option for every household.

Resolver choice can also affect the address returned for a site served through a content delivery network (CDN). Google notes that CDN answers may be influenced by resolver location; a resolver that is farther from you can sometimes lead to a different delivery destination. That is another reason to test on your own network and with a representative mix of domains instead of assuming one provider wins everywhere.

NETGEAR Nighthawk WiFi 6 Router R6700AX, Up to 1,500 sq ft, 1.8 Gbps
  • NIGHTHAWK WIFI 6 ROUTER FOR YOUR WHOLE HOME: Delivers fast, reliable WiFi across every room of your apartment or small home for streaming, gaming, video calls, and smart home devices, all running at the same time without slowing each other down.
  • WORKS WITH YOUR EXISTING INTERNET SERVICE: Pairs with your existing modem or gateway via ethernet. Compatible with most cable, fiber, DSL, and satellite providers. Some gateways and modem router combos may require bridge mode. No coax needed.
  • SET UP AND MANAGE YOUR NETWORK WITH THE NIGHTHAWK APP: Download the free Nighthawk app on iOS or Android for guided setup. Manage WiFi, run speed tests, pause devices, and set up guest networks from anywhere. Active internet required.
  • READY FOR THE DEVICES YOU ALREADY OWN: Your phones, laptops, and TVs work right out of the box. WiFi 6 delivers speeds up to 1.8 Gbps across 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz bands. Backward compatible with WiFi 5 and earlier.
  • COVERAGE IN EVERY ROOM: Covers up to 1,500 sq. ft. for up to 20 connected devices. Walls, floors, and interference can reduce range. Larger or multi-story homes may benefit from a NETGEAR Orbi mesh WiFi system.

How to try a different DNS resolver safely

  1. Record your current settings. Save the existing DNS values before changing them, so you can restore the previous configuration if the new resolver is unreliable or causes problems.
  2. Choose where to make the change. DNS can be configured on a supported device or operating system, or on a router. The available controls depend on the device, router model and ISP setup. Some ISP-supplied equipment may not let you change its DNS settings.
  3. Apply the resolver you want to test. Follow the configuration instructions for that device or router. Do not assume every router uses the same menu names or offers the same options.
  4. Repeat the same measurements. Compare lookups for the same broad set of domains from the same network. Also check ordinary browsing, since a faster lookup test does not guarantee every page will feel faster.
  5. Restore the previous configuration if needed. If lookups do not improve, requests time out, or other network functions stop working, switch back to the saved values. Google’s setup guidance explains how to revert to automatic DNS settings.

What if a resolver times out?

A timeout is not evidence that changing DNS improved or worsened general internet speed. First check whether the resolver is reachable from your network. If it is not, the problem may involve routing or connectivity to that resolver. Cloudflare’s troubleshooting guidance describes resolver-specific diagnostic steps for this situation.

  • Lookup time: compare a large set of domains from your own network, not a single ping result.
  • Reliability: check whether requests complete consistently or time out on your ISP.
  • Routing and location: account for the network path to the resolver and the possibility that resolver location affects CDN answers.
  • Privacy transport: traditional DNS is not encrypted in transit. DNS-over-HTTPS and DNS-over-TLS encrypt the connection between your device and its resolver. Encryption is a privacy property; it does not guarantee lower latency.
  • Compatibility and recovery: make sure your device or router supports the configuration you want, and keep a record of the original settings.

What the “one DNS change” claim can establish

A resolver change can plausibly improve how quickly some websites start loading when DNS lookup delay was part of the wait. But a before-and-after anecdote without the device, ISP, resolver, location, test method and measured results cannot establish that the change caused a general internet-speed improvement. To judge your own connection, compare DNS lookups before and after the change, then assess whether the specific symptom you were trying to fix actually changed.
