Blocking Google-related domains on home Wi-Fi might reduce some network activity, but the available evidence does not show that it caused this phone’s battery improvement—or that it will help other phones. Treat the battery change as a personal report, not a proven result. To judge whether a similar change helps your device, compare its battery use before and after and check which apps are active in the background.

What blocking network requests can—and cannot—tell you

Network requests can use battery because they rely on cellular or Wi-Fi radios. Android Developers notes that network activity can be a major cause of battery drain, but the effect of any particular request pattern depends on the device and circumstances. That general mechanism does not identify Google traffic as the cause of one person’s drain or quantify the savings from blocking it. Android Developers’ battery guidance was updated October 1, 2026.

Android also manages background work. Doze and App Standby defer some CPU and network activity when a device or app is idle, so battery behavior reflects both network traffic and the operating system’s power management. These controls provide context; they do not prove what caused a particular battery change. Android’s Doze and App Standby documentation explains those idle modes.

Check battery use before changing network settings

On Pixel phones, Google recommends checking battery use by app and reviewing background usage. Labels and controls vary by Android version and manufacturer; some of Google’s instructions apply only to Android 14 and later. Use your phone’s own battery settings to identify whether an app’s background activity is significant before attributing drain to network traffic. See Google Pixel Help’s battery-drain troubleshooting steps.

For a useful before-and-after comparison, keep the phone and usage as consistent as practical and note the observation period, battery level over time, and any simultaneous changes to apps, signal conditions, or settings. Without those details, an improvement after a DNS change is a reported association, not evidence that the block caused it.

What DNS blocking changes

DNS filtering attempts to prevent a device from resolving selected domain names. It is not the same as turning off a Google service, and the available evidence does not establish that all Google background traffic uses domains that DNS can block. Nor does it identify a safe or complete list of domains for this purpose.

Android 9 and later supports Private DNS using DNS-over-TLS. A VPN or DNS-changer app may alter or override the DNS path, so a setting made on the phone or router may not govern every connection. Check the device’s Android version and active network software before drawing conclusions about which DNS configuration is in effect. Android Help’s Private DNS instructions describe the feature.

Per-app background usage controls Individual apps on the phone Review battery use and background activity; available controls depend on Android version and device maker.
Android Private DNS DNS configuration for the phone, subject to network software and configuration Confirm Android version and whether a VPN or DNS-changer app affects the DNS path.
Router DNS settings Potentially devices using that home network Capabilities and behavior depend on the router and network setup; no specific router or blocklist is established here.

Change one thing at a time and keep a record of the original setting so you can reverse the change if needed.
