Loot first, then buy selectively. In most DMZ deployments, searching low-risk locations gives the best cash efficiency and can produce weapons, equipment, valuables, cash, and crafting materials that remain useful after a successful extraction. A Buy Station or Vendor is worth using when you need a specific item immediately, a mission has a hard requirement, or replacing a wiped loadout is safer than spending several minutes searching. Keep a cash reserve for high-impact utility, and remember that both a long loot route and a station visit create opportunities for another squad to find you.

What “loot versus buy” means in DMZ

The comparison depends on which DMZ implementation you are playing. The 2022–23 Warzone 2.0 version used Buy Stations, Backpack storage, Contraband weapons, bartering and Contraband Workbenches inside an Exclusion Zone. The 2026 Modern Warfare 4 DMZ guide describes a different layer around deployments: a Forward Operating Base (FOB), a rotating Vendor, a Gunsmith, persistent Stash storage and progression-linked unlocks. Those systems should not be treated as one rule set.

In either version, the economic choice is the same: spend time and exposure searching for an item, or convert cash (or barter ingredients) into a known item at a predictable location. The correct answer changes with your starting equipment, mission deadline, cash balance, squad strength, route safety and the consequences of losing the loadout.

The short answer: loot by default, buy to solve a specific problem

Looting has zero direct cash cost and can return more than one useful category of item. The official Warzone 2.0 overview describes a large Backpack that can hold weapons, equipment, valuables, cash and extra ammunition. In the 2026 system, extracted weapons, gear and 3D Printer Ingredients can be placed in a persistent Stash and used by later deployments. That makes a successful loot run an investment in future operators, not merely a way to fill the current Backpack.

Buying trades that uncertain return for speed and certainty. If a station has the gas mask, armor, killstreak, ammunition or other item you need, you can obtain it without opening another dozen containers. The trade is cash, a trip to a known destination and the possibility that the stock is limited, different from another shop or unavailable because of rotation or progression.

Use this priority order:

  1. Loot nearby and safely for a working weapon, armor, ammunition and basic equipment.
  2. Keep moving toward the objective or extraction instead of taking a long detour for a low-value item.
  3. Buy or barter the one missing requirement when its immediate value is greater than the likely value of another search.
  4. Preserve a reserve for information or emergency utility rather than spending every dollar on routine supplies.

How looting creates value

What you can find

Warzone 2.0’s official overview says Backpack storage covers weapons, equipment, valuables, cash, extra ammunition and additional weapons. A container search can therefore solve several needs at once: a usable firearm, plates or a carrier, a tactical item, sellable valuables and the cash needed for a later purchase. A looted Contraband weapon that survives extraction also unlocks its base weapon across other modes, according to the overview.

The current 2026 FOB guide expands the persistent side of looting. Its Stash stores weapons, gear, 3D Printer Ingredients and other loot types, and it tells operators to offload items after every extraction for future deployments. Windows Central, citing Activision material, reports that extracted DMZ Cash, 3D Printer Ingredients and other content are shared across active Operators. The practical result is that a safe extraction can improve more than the operator who carried the item.

When a loot route is efficient

Looting is strongest when the target is common, the first buildings are close to your spawn or objective and your squad can leave without crossing a high-traffic area. A short loop that provides a weapon, armor and ammunition is usually a better opening than running across the map for a premium container. The value comes from completing the route and extracting, not from the theoretical value of items still in a Backpack.

The cost that does not appear on the price tag

Searching consumes time. Every extra building can delay a contract, expose your movement through predictable doors and windows, and force a longer trip through an Exclusion Zone. A full Backpack can also create bad decisions: players may stay in danger to protect low-value valuables or discard a mission-critical item to keep a second weapon.

Loot has an additional risk in a squad wipe. Unless an item is extracted, its future value is zero for your account. This is why a “free” item is not automatically cheaper than a purchase. A ten-minute search that ends in an ambush can cost more than a controlled station visit.

What Buy Stations and Vendors provide

Warzone 2.0 Buy Stations

The official overview lists Buy Station gear such as gas masks, killstreaks, armor and other equipment. It also describes custom weapons sold for a considerable fee. Each shop has limited quantities, and item lists may differ by shop, so seeing a Buy Station on the map does not guarantee that it has the exact item your squad wants.

Buying is therefore a controlled solution, not a complete replacement for looting. You still need enough cash, a route to the station and a plan for leaving. A purchase can be fast once you arrive, but the destination is predictable to other squads and the interaction can leave you exposed.

Modern Warfare 4 DMZ’s 2026 Vendor

The 2026 FOB guide describes a Vendor unlocked at DMZ Player Level 5. Its wares rotate daily; higher player level and FOB upgrades improve the gear that becomes available. Check the rotation before deployment and treat the Vendor as a progression-dependent source rather than assuming every operator sees the same catalogue.

The 2026 system also includes a Gunsmith. Its availability and options are linked to unlocks, so a player with the same cash balance may not have the same purchasing or modification choices as a higher-level operator. Persistent Stash resources make a successful extraction useful later, while a purchased item still has to survive the current deployment before it contributes to future capacity.

Historical prices show why cash discipline matters

Season 06 patch notes documented the following Warzone 2.0 Buy Station changes in 2023. These figures are historical patch values, not a promise of current prices in any DMZ implementation.

Item Earlier price Season 06 price What the change illustrates
Munitions Box $1,000 $5,000 Routine resupply can consume a meaningful portion of a small bankroll.
Gas Mask $2,000 $3,500 Buying safety is convenient but not free.
Medium Backpack $5,000 $6,500 Capacity has a direct cash opportunity cost.
Large Backpack $30,000 $50,000 A major purchase can equal the proceeds of several successful runs.
3-Plate Carrier $35,000 $65,000 Replacing core survivability can drain a reserve.
UAV $12,000 $100,000 High-impact information may cost many times more than basic gear.
Advanced UAV (AUAV) $12,000 $200,000 Exceptional information was priced as a strategic purchase.
Precision Airstrike $12,000 $30,000 Offensive utility competes directly with armor and resupply.
Cluster Strike $12,000 $30,000 Area denial can be valuable, but only when the situation justifies it.
Revive Pistol $7,500 $10,000 Emergency recovery has a clear price before a fight begins.

These numbers are useful as a discipline lesson rather than a shopping list. Prices, stock and item names can change by patch or implementation. Before spending, ask whether the purchase creates a tactical advantage that cannot be obtained by a short, safe loot loop. Buying armor or ammunition because the squad is already exposed can be sensible; buying a premium item simply because cash is available can leave you unable to recover from the next fight.

Use five questions to choose between searching and spending

1. What is the cash efficiency?

Looting costs no cash, but it has an opportunity cost in time and risk. Buying converts a known amount of cash into a known item. Compare the purchase price with the value of the cash reserve you would lose and the probability of finding the same item before extraction.

2. How much time remains?

If a mission objective, radiation movement or extraction window imposes a deadline, the faster option usually wins. Loot while travelling toward the objective; do not turn a required item into a cross-map scavenger hunt. A nearby station with confirmed stock can be worth the price even when looting would be cheaper in a calm deployment.

3. Which route is more dangerous?

Looting exposes you through movement between containers and buildings. Buying exposes you at a predictable shop or Vendor location. Evaluate sightlines, nearby contracts, recent gunfire, vehicle access and the number of squad members who can cover the interaction. The safer option is the one that reduces total exposure, not automatically the one with fewer button presses.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

4. Does the item persist after extraction?

In Warzone 2.0, a Contraband weapon that extracts successfully has continuing value because its base weapon unlocks across other modes. In the 2026 system, weapons, gear and 3D Printer Ingredients can feed the Stash and later Operators. A purchased item has to survive the deployment to create the same future value, so do not treat a temporary advantage as guaranteed account progress.

5. Can bartering or a workbench solve the need?

If your squad already has the ingredients for a recipe, bartering can be cheaper than spending cash or searching randomly. If the problem is an unattractive weapon rather than the absence of a weapon, the Contraband Workbench may let you add or remove unlocked attachments for a cash fee. Compare the modification fee with the cost and risk of finding a replacement.

Recommended play patterns by situation

Fresh or wiped operator

  1. Search the closest low-risk buildings rather than travelling immediately to a premium area.
  2. Prioritize a usable weapon, armor or carrier, ammunition and one dependable tactical option.
  3. Sell or store valuables only after confirming that you are not discarding a mission or barter ingredient.
  4. Buy the single missing critical item if another search would require a dangerous detour.
  5. Extract as soon as the loadout is functional; rebuilding capacity is more valuable than protecting one extra low-value container.

The objective is stability, not a perfect kit. A modest loadout that reaches extraction can fund the next deployment; an ambitious search can return you to the same wipe state.

Mission with a hard requirement

Read the requirement before leaving spawn and identify whether it is an item, a quantity, a key or a location. Loot along the route you already need to travel. If the station or Vendor has the requirement and the cash cost is lower than the risk of another search, buy or barter it. Do not postpone extraction for optional upgrades after the requirement is secured.

Established operator with cash

Cash is most valuable when it changes the tactical information or survivability of the deployment. Reserve enough for a high-impact purchase that fits your squad’s plan, but avoid automatically buying ordinary armor, ammunition or a second weapon that nearby loot can replace. A large balance is an option, not a reason to spend.

Recovering a weapon

Start with a Contraband weapon when one is available. If its attachments are poor, use the Contraband Workbench to add or remove unlocked attachments for a cash fee. This can turn a merely usable scavenged weapon into a known configuration without paying for an entirely new weapon. Remember that the fee and available attachments depend on the applicable implementation and unlocks.

Playing the 2026 DMZ system

  1. Before deployment, check the rotating Vendor wares and your DMZ Player Level.
  2. Review FOB upgrades and Gunsmith unlocks so you know which options are actually available to this operator.
  3. Use the deployment to gather Stash resources, not only immediate combat gear.
  4. After extraction, offload weapons, gear and 3D Printer Ingredients into the Stash for future Operators.
  5. Buy only when the current Vendor offers a specific advantage that your planned route cannot safely provide.

When Buy Stations are worth the exposure

Immediate survivability

A purchase is justified when the squad is about to enter a fight or hazardous area and lacks a basic survival item. Replacing missing armor, a gas mask or a revive option can prevent a loss that would erase the value of every item already carried. The decision is strongest when the station is close, its stock is confirmed and teammates can cover the interaction.

Information that changes the plan

High-cost UAV-class items are not routine supplies. Their value comes from enabling a specific action: avoiding a hostile squad, selecting an extraction route, or committing to an objective with better information. If the squad has no plan for the information, preserve the cash.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Time-sensitive objectives

Buying wins when the alternative is an uncertain search that would force you to miss a contract, leave a teammate behind or cross a closing hazard. The item’s price is then buying time and reducing route variance, not merely purchasing equipment.

When looting is clearly better

  • The item is common in nearby containers and you have a safe route to several buildings.
  • Your cash reserve is small and the purchase would eliminate the ability to recover from a death or complete a more important objective.
  • You need multiple categories of supplies, making a search more efficient than buying each one separately.
  • You are collecting valuables or 3D Printer Ingredients that will improve future deployments after extraction.
  • The station’s stock is limited, rotated or progression-gated, so spending time reaching it does not guarantee a result.

Bartering can beat both random loot and cash

Season 03 introduced Buy Station bartering recipes. The official overview says recipes could produce plate carriers, backpacks, killstreaks, self-revive kits and keys, with zone-specific options and dozens of combinations. A recipe is attractive when the squad already owns its ingredients and those ingredients have less value than the finished item.

Barter only after checking what the ingredients are needed for elsewhere. Converting a rare component into a carrier may be efficient in the current fight but harmful if it is also required for a mission or a more important recipe. Treat ingredients as a second currency and compare their replacement difficulty with the cash price of the item you want.

Workbenches make mediocre loot more valuable

The Contraband Workbench lets operators add or remove unlocked attachments from Contraband or Insured Weapons for a cash fee. This changes the usual assumption that a poor weapon must be discarded or replaced. A weapon with the right base platform can be upgraded while the squad remains on its existing route.

Use the workbench when the weapon’s handling problem can be fixed with an attachment you already have unlocked and the fee is lower than a replacement purchase or a dangerous search. Do not spend on cosmetic or marginal changes while the squad lacks armor, ammunition or a safe extraction plan.

Common mistakes and how to correct them

Spending the entire reserve on routine gear

Symptom: the squad has a full loadout but no cash for information, recovery or an urgent requirement. Correction: set a reserve before visiting the station and spend above that line only when the purchase changes the outcome of the current objective.

Assuming every station has the same inventory

Symptom: a long detour ends with missing stock. Correction: account for limited quantities and shop-specific lists in Warzone 2.0, and check daily rotation and progression in the 2026 Vendor system before planning around an item.

Over-looting after the squad is ready

Symptom: the Backpack is full, the objective is complete and the team remains in the Exclusion Zone for low-value valuables. Correction: choose an extraction trigger in advance: once the required gear and mission items are secured, leave unless a nearby high-value opportunity has unusually low risk.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Protecting a loadout instead of the mission

Symptom: a teammate takes a fight or detour solely to preserve an item that can be replaced. Correction: rank items by mission necessity, survival value and future persistence. Extracting with a modest kit is better than losing the kit and the operator.

Mixing the old and new DMZ rules

Symptom: you expect a 2022–23 Buy Station feature, price or progression rule in the 2026 system. Correction: identify the implementation first. Warzone 2.0 uses the historical Buy Station, Backpack, Contraband, bartering and workbench framework; the 2026 guide adds the FOB, Stash, rotating Vendor, Gunsmith and level-gated progression.

A practical cash-and-route checklist

  • Before deployment: identify the objective, your starting gear, the nearest low-risk loot route and the item that would justify a purchase.
  • After the first buildings: confirm whether you already have a functional weapon, armor, ammunition and a way to recover from a down.
  • Before a station visit: verify stock or rotation, count the cash that will remain, and identify your exit route.
  • At the station or Vendor: buy the item that solves a defined problem; skip upgrades that merely make the loadout look better.
  • Before extraction: compare the value of one more container with the exposure and travel time it requires.
  • After extraction: in the 2026 system, offload useful weapons, gear and 3D Printer Ingredients into the Stash for later Operators.

Final verdict

For most deployments, looting is worth more than buying because it preserves cash, supplies several item categories at once and can build persistent resources after extraction. Buying is worth it when certainty and speed matter more than cash efficiency: a hard mission requirement, an immediate survivability gap, a time-limited route or a replacement loadout after a wipe. Bartering and workbench modification sit between the two, allowing ingredients or an imperfect weapon to cover a need without a full-price replacement.

Use the rules for the version you are actually playing. The 2022–23 Warzone 2.0 economy is built around Buy Stations, Backpack storage, Contraband, bartering and workbenches. The 2026 Modern Warfare 4 DMZ layer adds the FOB, persistent Stash, rotating Vendor, Gunsmith and progression gates. In both, the winning habit is the same: take the safest path to a functional kit, spend only for a clear tactical gain, and extract before the value in your Backpack becomes a reason to take an unnecessary fight.
