The safest DMZ inventory rule is simple: take only what the next deployment needs, protect anything you cannot replace in a Secure Slot, and move useful loot out of the Backpack after every successful exfil. The Stash is your reserve, the Loadout is what you commit to a deployment, and the Backpack is temporary working space. Activision’s official guide for Modern Warfare 4 DMZ, published October 9, 2026 ahead of the announced October 23 launch, describes the system but does not publish an item-by-item sell or drop ranking. Your decisions therefore need to follow purpose, slot efficiency, crafting requirements, and exfil risk rather than a universal tier list.
Understand the four places your items can exist
Inventory mistakes usually happen because players treat every storage area as interchangeable. The guide separates the Stash, Loadout, Backpack, and Secure Slots.
Stash: your out-of-deployment reserve
The Stash holds gear and loot while you are outside a deployment. It is where you keep equipment for later operators, save ingredients for crafting or Forward Operating Base (FOB) upgrades, and offload items you do not need in the next raid. The pre-launch guide lists 40 initial item slots and 12 weapon slots, counted separately. Those figures come from the October 2026 guide and should be checked against the live game after launch.

The Loadout is the equipment selected from the Stash for an active deployment. Choosing an item for the Loadout removes it from your immediately available reserve and exposes it to the risks of the next run. Build the Loadout around the objective, expected combat, and extraction plan instead of filling every available space.

Backpack: limited working space
The Backpack holds items during a deployment. The Basic Pack is documented with eight available slots. Some smaller items stack, so several units can occupy one slot; stack behavior depends on the item rather than simply its physical quantity. Additional backpack types can add slots or change slot types, but their exact 2026 specifications should be verified in the live game.
Secure Slots: the exception to failed-exfil loss
Activision states that anything not placed in a Secure Slot is lost if you fail to Exfil. Treat a Secure Slot as insurance for the one item you most need to bring home, not as permission to carry a full collection of irreplaceable gear. The guide does not establish every Secure Slot limit or every backpack’s preservation rules, so read the in-game description before relying on a particular setup.
What to keep, stow, and drop
Use the following categories to make a decision quickly. They describe function, not a universal value ranking; the guide does not publish individual item prices, mission priorities, or a complete drop list.

|---|---|---|---|
| Deployment equipment | You need it for the current objective, route, or expected fight. | You have returned successfully and it is not part of your next planned Loadout. | It blocks a necessary item and cannot be protected or replaced in time. |
| 3D Printer Ingredients | You are carrying them toward extraction or a recipe you intend to complete during the run. | You have exfilled and want them available for equipment crafting or FOB station upgrades. | You have no current crafting or upgrade use and need the slot for a higher-priority objective item. |
| Resources | You are collecting them as part of the run; the game tracks their totals automatically. | Not applicable in the normal slot-management sense: Synthetics, Electronics, Chemicals, and Metals are automatically broken down and do not consume Stash slots. | Do not waste Backpack decisions on their Stash footprint; make space based on other carried items. |
| Weapons and other acquired gear | The item improves the current Loadout or is needed for the extraction plan. | You want to preserve it for a later operator or deployment. | You have a full Backpack, no planned use, and a more valuable objective or ingredient must be carried out. |
| Duplicate low-priority loot | Only while you have open slots and no better objective item is available. | After exfil if you deliberately want a reserve. | When its slot cost prevents mission items, crafting ingredients, or protected gear from making it home. |
The important distinction is between resources and 3D Printer Ingredients. Resources are automatically broken down into totals and do not use Stash slots. Ingredients remain as Backpack items during a deployment, then can be transferred to the Stash after a successful exfil. Do not assume that every object that looks like a material follows the automatic resource rule; use the category shown by the game.

Build a Loadout before deployment
- Start in the Stash. Identify the mission, station upgrade, or crafting result you are pursuing. Pull only the weapons, equipment, and ingredients that support that plan.
- Reserve a slot for the unexpected. An eight-slot Basic Pack fills quickly. Leave at least one usable slot when possible so an objective item or emergency replacement does not force you to abandon something important.
- Separate expendable gear from irreplaceable gear. Put the item you most want to recover in a Secure Slot if the live backpack provides one. Do not assume a non-Secure slot will survive a failed exfil.
- Check stack efficiency. Consolidate compatible small items before leaving. A stack can turn several units into one slot, while incompatible items consume separate slots even when they serve a similar purpose.
- Match the backpack to the job. When multiple backpack types are available, compare item-slot count and type, weapon slots, Secure Slot behavior, and the requirements of your next deployment. A larger capacity is not automatically better if it removes a weapon slot or does not support your objective.
Manage space during a deployment
Use a purpose test for every pickup
When the Backpack is nearly full, ask three questions: Is this required for the current objective? Will it be used for a recipe or FOB upgrade I am actively pursuing? Is it more valuable to retain than the item it would replace? If all three answers are no, leave it where it is. Picking up an item merely because a slot is open creates clutter and increases the chance of losing something useful during a rushed extraction.
Protect the extraction path
Keep the items that must reach the Stash together in your mental priority order. If a fight, contract, or detour fills the Backpack, remove duplicates and unplanned loot first. Avoid dropping a required ingredient simply to keep a third copy of an interchangeable weapon. The objective is not maximum quantity; it is the highest useful value that can survive the route to Exfil.
Do not confuse resource totals with carried objects
The four automatically broken-down resource types—Synthetics, Electronics, Chemicals, and Metals—are tracked without using Stash slots. 3D Printer Ingredients are different: they occupy Backpack space during the run and become Stash items after successful extraction. This is why a material run can still end with a full Backpack even though the resource totals themselves have no Stash footprint.

What to do immediately after a successful exfil
A successful deployment returns the Loadout to your account, while the useful loot you carried can be organized for later use. Make post-run sorting a fixed routine rather than waiting until the Stash is full.

- Open the Stash and offload first. Move unwanted Loadout items and useful 3D Printer Ingredients out of the Backpack. Activision’s guide specifically advises offloading loot because successful deployments can quickly fill a Backpack.
- Sort by Type. Grouping items by Type makes it easier to see duplicate weapons, ingredients, and equipment that should be merged or stored.
- Sort by Rarity when value is the deciding factor. Rarity-first sorting surfaces high-rarity items for inspection. The guide also documents an alternate Rarity-then-Type sort, which is useful when you want both quick value checks and category grouping.
- Merge compatible stacks. Combine partial stacks wherever the interface allows. Consolidation creates slots without discarding anything and is especially useful before a crafting-focused deployment.
- Choose a next-run reserve. Keep only the equipment and ingredients you can explain in terms of the next objective or a planned backup. Everything else belongs in a reserve slot, a sale/discard decision, or a later review.
What happens when you fail to Exfil
Failure has a clear default consequence in the official guide: anything outside a Secure Slot is lost. Plan for that outcome before every risky push. If an item is valuable enough that losing it would disrupt your next deployment, place it in an available Secure Slot or leave it in the Stash until the run is necessary. Do not count on a historical backpack rule to protect it.
A failed exfil is also why carrying capacity and extraction timing matter. A full Backpack does not help if it prevents you from taking a critical item or encourages a late detour. Once the objective is complete and your priority items are secured, treat the nearest viable extraction as part of the mission rather than an optional final step.
How to choose among backpack types
The 2026 guide supports four comparison questions but does not provide a complete live specification table for every backpack. Use these questions whenever the game offers a choice.

Do not import old DMZ backpack advice without checking the version
Activision’s April 2023 Warzone 2.0 DMZ Season 03 overview described Secure Backpacks as retaining eligible non-Contraband, non-on-soldier items and preserving contents for an Active Duty Soldier on elimination. It also described Scavenger Backpacks as replacing the third weapon slot found in Medium and Large Backpacks with extra item slots.

Those are historical mechanics from the 2023 Warzone 2.0 version. Treat old videos, screenshots, and tier lists as version-specific until the live in-game descriptions confirm them.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Capacity planning with the published figures
The pre-launch guide gives three concrete figures: eight slots for the Basic Pack, 40 initial Stash item slots, and 12 weapon slots counted separately. These are official pre-launch figures, not independently verified live limits. Use them to plan conservatively, then compare them with the values shown in your client after launch.
- An eight-slot Basic Pack can be consumed by eight different item types even when several items look small.
- The 40-item Stash limit makes post-run sorting important; leaving every duplicate in storage will eventually block useful loot.
- The separate 12-weapon allowance means weapon storage and general item storage should be managed as different pools.
- Stacking and automatic resource breakdown can make the practical capacity higher than the raw slot count, but neither removes the need to clear unwanted objects.
Common inventory mistakes and fixes
Filling every slot before leaving
Symptom: the first useful objective item forces an immediate discard. Fix: leave an open slot and carry only items tied to the deployment plan.
Assuming all materials are free
Symptom: a crafting run runs out of space despite resource totals being tracked. Fix: distinguish automatically broken-down Synthetics, Electronics, Chemicals, and Metals from 3D Printer Ingredients, which remain Backpack items.

Leaving loot in the Backpack after extraction
Symptom: the next deployment starts with no room for new objectives. Fix: offload immediately, sort by Type or Rarity, merge stacks, and move ingredients into the Stash.
Trusting a 2023 tier list
Symptom: a backpack behaves differently from an old guide’s description. Fix: check the current item tooltip and slot layout; historical Secure and Scavenger rules are not confirmed for the 2026 mode.
Carrying valuables outside a Secure Slot
Symptom: a failed extraction wipes the item you intended to save. Fix: reserve Secure Slots for the highest-consequence items and do not carry irreplaceable gear unnecessarily.

A repeatable keep–stow–drop checklist
- Before deployment: define the objective, select the smallest practical Loadout, check stack efficiency, and assign Secure Slot protection.
- During deployment: keep mission items and planned ingredients, leave duplicates behind when space tightens, and start moving toward Exfil once the priority haul is complete.
- After successful exfil: offload the Backpack, place 3D Printer Ingredients in the Stash, sort by Type or Rarity, merge stacks, and review duplicates.
- Before the next run: check the separate weapon and item capacities, then rebuild the Loadout for the next objective rather than repeating the previous run’s contents.
- After a failed exfil: assume every non-Secure item is gone and rebuild from the Stash using the current live backpack descriptions.
Bottom line
Keep what serves the next deployment, stow what you want available after extraction, and drop anything that consumes a slot without a clear objective, crafting, upgrade, or reserve purpose. The Stash, Loadout, Backpack, and Secure Slots are different risk zones; managing them separately is more reliable than following a blanket item ranking. Because Modern Warfare 4 DMZ was still pre-launch when the guide was published, verify slot counts and backpack behavior in the live client before treating the documented figures or any older 2023 advice as permanent rules.
