Neither DLSS Frame Generation nor AMD FSR Frame Generation is a universal winner. Your best choice is determined first by your GPU generation and the exact game support, then by the artifacts and responsiveness you observe in that title. NVIDIA currently lists DLSS Frame Generation for GeForce RTX 40- and RTX 50-series cards, with Dynamic Multi Frame Generation limited to RTX 50-series. AMD lists FSR 3 Frame Generation for Radeon RX 5000-series and newer, while its machine-learning-based FSR Redstone Frame Generation is listed for RX 9000-series and newer.

Frame generation can increase the displayed frame rate, but it does not automatically make input response faster. Compare the same game, build, output resolution, graphics preset, base rendered frame rate, and latency settings before deciding. Vendor descriptions explain how Reflex and Anti-Lag are intended to work, but the available documentation does not establish an independent, cross-vendor image-quality or latency winner.

DLSS Frame Generation vs. FSR Frame Generation at a glance

Question What the current documentation establishes
Which NVIDIA GPUs are eligible? NVIDIA lists DLSS Frame Generation on GeForce RTX 40-series and RTX 50-series GPUs. Dynamic Multi Frame Generation is listed for RTX 50-series.
Which AMD GPUs are eligible? AMD lists FSR 3 Frame Generation on Radeon RX 5000-series and newer. ML-based FSR Redstone Frame Generation is listed on RX 9000-series and newer.
Does a game support every version automatically? No. A title may support one implementation without supporting a newer generation or a driver-based upgrade. Check the game menu and the current vendor compatibility list.
Which has better image quality? No independent, controlled head-to-head result in the available documentation proves a universal winner. Quality is game- and scene-dependent.
Which has lower latency? NVIDIA describes DLSS Frame Generation working with Reflex. AMD describes Anti-Lag as adjusting frame timing to reduce input-to-response delay. Those statements are not a neutral cross-vendor measurement.

The practical rule is simple: establish eligibility first. If your card or game cannot use a particular implementation, image-quality and latency comparisons are irrelevant. If both options are available, use matched settings and judge motion quality and measured response in the game you actually play.

What “frame generation” means

Generated frames are inserted between rendered frames

A conventional game renders each frame from the game simulation. Frame-generation technology analyzes information from rendered frames and other motion data, then creates an additional frame between them. The display can therefore show more frames than the game is rendering directly. The extra frames may make camera movement look smoother, but they are not the same as additional simulation updates or a higher underlying input-sampling rate.

  • Axial-tech fan design features a smaller fan hub that facilitates longer blades and a barrier ring that increases downward air pressure
  • A 2.5-slot design maximizes compatibility and cooling efficiency for superior performance in small chassis

This distinction explains why a counter showing a high generated frame rate does not, by itself, prove lower latency. Responsiveness still depends on the time taken to render the base frames, the display pipeline, synchronization settings, and any latency-reduction feature enabled alongside frame generation.

Do not confuse frame generation with upscaling

DLSS Super Resolution and AMD FSR upscaling reconstruct a higher-resolution image from a lower-resolution render. Frame generation is a separate operation that creates intermediate frames. A GPU can support a vendor’s upscaler without meeting the requirements for that vendor’s frame-generation feature. NVIDIA’s hardware table, for example, lists broader RTX support for DLSS Super Resolution than for DLSS Frame Generation.

When a game exposes several toggles, record them separately: output resolution, upscaler mode, sharpening, frame generation, and latency-reduction options. Changing more than one at once makes a quality or latency comparison impossible to interpret.

GPU and game compatibility

NVIDIA eligibility

NVIDIA’s current technology table lists DLSS Frame Generation for GeForce RTX 40-series and RTX 50-series GPUs. Its newer Dynamic Multi Frame Generation entry is restricted in that table to RTX 50-series. The presence of a “DLSS” option in a game does not mean every RTX card can use frame generation; the exact generation matters.

Check the game’s graphics menu for the precise label. “DLSS Super Resolution” is not proof that “DLSS Frame Generation” is available, and support for Dynamic Multi Frame Generation is a separate requirement from ordinary DLSS Frame Generation.

AMD eligibility

AMD distinguishes between two generations of frame generation. Its FSR 3 Frame Generation listing covers Radeon RX 5000-series and newer. ML-based FSR Redstone Frame Generation is listed for Radeon RX 9000-series and newer. Use the exact feature name shown by the game or driver rather than treating every “FSR” label as interchangeable.

AMD’s supported-games documentation also describes conditions for some driver-based Redstone upgrades. Those conditions include a minimum level of FSR integration in the title, a compatible AMD Software driver, a supported graphics card, Windows 11, and DirectX 12. Eligibility is title-specific and the supported-games list can change.

Game integration is a separate gate

A qualifying GPU is necessary but not sufficient. The game must implement the feature natively or qualify for a documented driver-based upgrade path. A game that supports FSR 3 Frame Generation does not automatically support FSR Redstone Frame Generation, and a title with one DLSS option does not automatically expose every newer DLSS feature.

Before troubleshooting, write down these five items:

  • Your exact GPU model and generation.
  • The feature name shown in the game menu.
  • The game version or build.
  • Your operating-system and graphics-driver versions.
  • Whether the title uses DirectX 12 when a driver-based upgrade requires it.

How to check support before changing settings

  1. Identify the GPU generation. In Windows, open the graphics section of Task Manager or your installed driver application and record the full model name, not just the family name.
  2. Open the game’s graphics or display menu. Look for separate entries for the upscaler and frame generation. Note whether the option is labelled DLSS Frame Generation, Dynamic Multi Frame Generation, FSR 3 Frame Generation, or FSR Redstone Frame Generation.
  3. Check the current vendor compatibility page. Confirm that the game, GPU, driver, operating system, and graphics API meet the listed requirements. Do not rely on an old screenshot or a generic “supports DLSS/FSR” statement.
  4. Update only the components required by the support note. For a driver-based AMD Redstone upgrade, for example, the documented requirements include a compatible AMD Software driver, Windows 11, DirectX 12, and the required minimum FSR integration.
  5. Restart the game after changing drivers or feature support. Some titles rebuild shaders or expose new options only after a complete restart.
  6. Record a baseline. Disable frame generation temporarily and note the native rendered frame rate, resolution, graphics preset, and latency setting. This baseline is essential for interpreting the generated result.

Image quality: what can and cannot be concluded

NVIDIA describes DLSS as an AI-based technology and says newer DLSS models target improved stability and clarity. AMD describes its FSR technologies as improving visual quality and performance. These are vendor descriptions of their own products, not an independent comparison. The available documentation does not establish that one family always produces cleaner images than the other.

Inspect difficult content, not only a static screenshot

Frame-generation artifacts are often easiest to see while the camera or objects move. Examine the same scene with both options and look closely at:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Thin geometry: wires, railings, poles, tree branches, and weapon sights can shimmer or break during motion.
  • Fast objects: vehicles, characters, projectiles, and rotating machinery can show trails, doubled edges, or unstable contours.
  • Particles and transparency: smoke, sparks, rain, foliage, hair, and glass are difficult because their appearance changes rapidly.
  • HUD and text edges: reticles, subtitles, nameplates, and menus may reveal reconstruction or interpolation errors.
  • Camera pans: a slow horizontal pan makes temporal instability and crawling detail easier to compare.

A single paused frame can hide these problems. Use a repeatable route through the same scene, capture identical clips, and view them at the same playback speed. Do not change the upscaler mode, sharpening, resolution, or graphics preset between captures.

Use a controlled comparison

For a fair DLSS-versus-FSR test, keep the game build, display resolution, internal-quality mode, graphics settings, ray-tracing settings, field of view, synchronization mode, and frame-generation multiplier constant. Compare GPUs in the same performance class and begin from a similar base rendered frame rate. If one configuration starts at a substantially lower base rate, its generated output is not an equivalent test.

The result is inherently title-specific. Different motion vectors, anti-aliasing paths, HUD implementations, and engine integrations can make one option look better in one game and worse in another. An image-quality verdict that does not name the game and settings is too broad to be useful.

Latency and responsiveness

Why displayed FPS is not input latency

Frame generation inserts visual frames, but the game’s simulation and input processing still depend heavily on the base rendered frames. If the base frame rate is low, the interval before a newly rendered game state appears can remain noticeable even when an overlay reports a much higher generated rate. A smooth camera path and a responsive control path are related but different outcomes.

NVIDIA Reflex with DLSS Frame Generation

NVIDIA states that DLSS Frame Generation works with NVIDIA Reflex for responsiveness. If a supported game exposes Reflex, test it according to the title’s own instructions and record whether it is enabled. This establishes the intended companion feature, but the statement does not prove that every DLSS configuration has lower latency than every FSR configuration.

AMD Anti-Lag with FSR Frame Generation

AMD’s support documentation says Radeon Anti-Lag reduces the delay between user input and the visual response by dynamically adjusting frame timing, and that it works best in GPU-limited scenarios. Anti-Lag availability and behavior should therefore be recorded separately from the FSR frame-generation toggle.

How to measure rather than guess

If responsiveness matters, use the same measurement method for both configurations. Keep the game, scene, GPU class, driver, resolution, base rendered frame rate, display refresh rate, synchronization mode, and latency feature settings constant. Report the measurement method and conditions with any result. Without matched measurements, neither vendor’s feature description can support a universal latency ranking.

Choosing between the options

Your situation Most sensible next step
You own an RTX 40- or RTX 50-series card. Check whether the game supports DLSS Frame Generation and whether its exact mode is ordinary Frame Generation or the RTX 50-series-only Dynamic Multi Frame Generation.
You own a Radeon RX 5000-series through RX 8000-series card. Look for FSR 3 Frame Generation support. Do not assume ML-based FSR Redstone support.
You own a Radeon RX 9000-series card. Check both native FSR support and the title-specific requirements for a Redstone driver upgrade, including Windows 11 and DirectX 12 where listed.
The game supports only one family. Use the supported implementation and evaluate its artifacts and responsiveness in that title.
Both families are available. Run a matched, scene-by-scene comparison. Choose the setting with the more stable motion and acceptable measured response, not the larger FPS number alone.
Your base rendered frame rate is unstable or very low. Stabilize the base render first by adjusting resolution, upscaling quality, or graphics settings. Frame generation cannot replace a sound baseline.

Common problems and fixes

The option is missing

  • Confirm that your GPU is in the eligible generation, rather than merely supporting the vendor’s upscaler.
  • Update to a driver version named by the game or compatibility documentation.
  • Verify that the game is running the required graphics API; some AMD driver upgrades require DirectX 12.
  • Check the operating-system requirement; the documented Redstone driver path lists Windows 11.
  • Make sure the title is on the current supported-games list and has the minimum integration level required for the driver path.

The image shimmers or produces ghosting

  • Reproduce the issue in a difficult-motion scene instead of judging from a static menu.
  • Return to the same output resolution, quality mode, and sharpening level used in the comparison baseline.
  • Test the other supported frame-generation option in the same scene, if available.
  • Check whether the artifact is caused by the game’s HUD, particles, foliage, or anti-aliasing implementation rather than frame generation alone.

The FPS counter rises but controls feel sluggish

  • Record the base rendered frame rate separately from the generated display rate.
  • Enable the supported latency feature—Reflex for compatible NVIDIA configurations or Anti-Lag for compatible AMD configurations—and measure again.
  • Keep the display refresh, synchronization, and frame cap unchanged while comparing.
  • If the base rate is too low or inconsistent, reduce demanding settings before drawing a conclusion about frame generation.

The game crashes or behaves differently after enabling a driver upgrade

Disable the driver-based feature, restart the game, and verify the title’s exact support conditions. A native game integration and a driver override are not interchangeable. If the title is no longer listed as eligible or its required API and operating system do not match, use the native mode or leave frame generation off.

A repeatable test procedure

  1. Choose one game and one repeatable scene with camera movement, foliage, particles, and visible HUD elements.
  2. Set a fixed output resolution and graphics preset. Record ray tracing, field of view, sharpening, and synchronization settings.
  3. Disable frame generation and capture the base rendered frame rate and latency using one consistent tool or method.
  4. Enable the first supported frame-generation implementation without changing other settings.
  5. Record the displayed frame rate, base rendered rate if available, subjective motion stability, visible artifacts, and measured latency.
  6. Repeat the process for the other implementation on the same GPU class or on a comparably configured system. Do not present results from different conditions as a direct head-to-head.
  7. Inspect the captured clips at normal speed and in slow motion. Note exactly where thin geometry, particles, foliage, HUD elements, or fast objects diverge.
  8. Report the game version, driver, GPU, operating system, API, resolution, quality preset, base rate, frame-generation mode, latency feature, and measurement method with the conclusion.

Bottom line

Start with compatibility, not brand preference. DLSS Frame Generation is currently a GeForce RTX 40- and RTX 50-series feature, with Dynamic Multi Frame Generation listed for RTX 50-series. AMD’s FSR 3 Frame Generation covers Radeon RX 5000-series and newer, while FSR Redstone’s ML-based frame generation is listed for RX 9000-series and newer and may require title-specific driver, Windows 11, DirectX 12, and integration conditions.

When both choices are available, compare identical scenes and settings. Judge thin geometry, particles, foliage, HUD edges, and camera motion for image stability; measure input response with the appropriate latency feature enabled; and keep the base rendered frame rate visible. The higher generated FPS number is not enough evidence to name a winner, and the available vendor documentation does not support a universal image-quality or latency verdict.
