For walk-and-talk vlogging, the DJI Osmo Pocket 3 is the more purpose-built choice. Its three-axis mechanical gimbal, rotatable 2-inch touchscreen and ActiveTrack are designed to keep a solo creator framed while moving. For water, rugged travel, point-of-view footage or mounting a camera to equipment, GoPro HERO13 Black is the better fit. It combines HyperSmooth 6.0 stabilization, built-in mounting options and a stated waterproof rating to 33 feet.

Neither camera is universally better. Pocket 3 is a handheld gimbal camera that prioritizes direct self-framing and a larger sensor; HERO13 Black is a rugged action camera built around wide capture, mounting flexibility and weather resistance. The right decision depends on whether most of your footage is your face speaking to the camera or action footage that must tolerate speed, impact and water.

The short answer: choose by shooting situation

Choose the DJI Osmo Pocket 3 when your typical sequence involves holding the camera at arm’s length, walking through a location, turning the camera toward yourself, or switching between horizontal and vertical publishing. The mechanical gimbal is physically different from electronic action-camera stabilization, and the rotatable display lets you see your composition without adding a monitor.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Choose the GoPro HERO13 Black when you need a camera on a helmet, handlebar, vehicle, tripod or other mount; when you expect rain, splashes or underwater use within the camera’s stated limits; or when an ultra-wide action perspective is more important than a natural-looking talking-head view. GoPro’s 8:7 capture also gives you room to extract horizontal and vertical versions from one recording.

DJI Pocket 3 and HERO13 Black compared

Decision factor DJI Osmo Pocket 3 GoPro HERO13 Black
Stabilization approach Three-axis mechanical gimbal; DJI also provides ActiveTrack features In-camera HyperSmooth 6.0 electronic stabilization
Self-framing Rotatable 2-inch touchscreen for direct front-facing framing Action-camera display and wide capture; framing is less gimbal-oriented
Sensor and lens information 1-inch CMOS sensor; 20 mm-equivalent, f/2.0 lens 8:7 capture sensor; product information lists up to a 156-degree field of view in full 8:7 at supported resolutions
Standard and slow-motion modes Up to 4K/60 for normal video; up to 4K/120 in slow-motion mode 5.3K/60, 4K/120 and 1080p/240 modes are listed
Stated water protection The reviewed DJI information does not establish that Pocket 3 is waterproof Waterproof to 33 feet according to GoPro
Mounting design Primarily a handheld camera; mounting requires the appropriate accessory or setup Built-in mounting options and an action-camera accessory ecosystem
Built-in and external audio Three built-in microphones; DJI Mic 2 and described third-party microphone connections are supported Voice-oriented audio tuning is listed; Creator Edition bundles a Media Mod, but comparative speech quality is not established
Storage guidance microSD support up to 1 TB; use DJI’s current recommended-card list Use a card meeting GoPro’s listed V30 or UHS-3 requirements

A larger sensor or a higher headline resolution is not, by itself, a guarantee of better footage. Lens perspective, stabilization behavior, lighting, movement, compression, audio and your ability to frame the shot all affect the result.

Stabilization: a mechanical gimbal versus HyperSmooth

How Pocket 3’s gimbal changes handheld shots

Pocket 3 physically moves the camera on three axes to counter rotation as you walk or hold it. That design is aimed at smooth handheld movement and a deliberate, camera-like motion. Because the lens and sensor are mounted on a gimbal, the camera’s physical orientation is part of the stabilization system rather than relying only on software to crop and correct each frame.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The gimbal is especially relevant when your face is the subject. You can hold the camera in front of you, rotate the screen toward yourself and let the camera’s movement remain controlled while you walk. DJI also specifies ActiveTrack on Pocket 3, which can help keep a selected subject in frame when you move within the camera’s tracking capability.

How HERO13 Black’s HyperSmooth works in an action workflow

GoPro identifies HyperSmooth 6.0 as the HERO13 Black’s in-camera stabilization system. Action-camera stabilization is designed for rapid movement, vibration and footage captured from a fixed mount that is itself moving. It is therefore a natural match for cycling, skiing, motorsports, body-mounted viewpoints and other shots where the camera cannot be held steadily.

Mechanical gimbal stabilization and electronic HyperSmooth are different approaches. The published specifications do not establish that one produces better footage in every scene. A creator walking slowly with a camera in hand and a creator attaching a camera to a vehicle are solving different motion problems, so choose the system that matches your movement and mounting method.

Self-framing, portrait video and social formats

Pocket 3 for direct face-to-camera control

The 2-inch touchscreen rotates, giving you a direct way to switch between a front-facing composition and other shooting orientations. DJI lists both horizontal and vertical shooting modes. This is useful if you publish the same vlog idea as a widescreen video and a portrait clip and want to decide the format while recording rather than crop later.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

A rotatable screen also reduces the need for a separate monitor when you are filming alone. You can check headroom, look for distracting background objects and confirm that your face is in the intended part of the frame before beginning a take.

HERO13 Black for reframing from a tall capture

HERO13 Black’s 8:7 capture is tall relative to traditional widescreen video. GoPro’s product information highlights a 156-degree field of view in full 8:7 at supported resolutions. Recording a broad 8:7 frame can leave room to create a horizontal crop for a conventional video and a vertical crop for a phone-first platform.

This approach is valuable when you cannot monitor yourself continuously, such as when the camera is mounted to a helmet or vehicle. The trade-off is that you must plan for the crop: keep important subjects away from the extreme edges and record at a mode that supports the reframing you need.

Sensor, lens perspective and image character

Pocket 3’s one-inch sensor and 20 mm-equivalent lens

DJI specifies a 1-inch CMOS sensor and a 20 mm-equivalent f/2.0 lens for Pocket 3. The specification describes the camera’s capture hardware and a moderately wide perspective suited to a person holding the camera at arm’s length. It does not guarantee a particular level of detail, dynamic range or low-light performance in every situation.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

For a talking-head vlog, a moderately wide lens can keep your face and some surroundings visible without the exaggerated edge stretching that very wide action-camera lenses may produce. Step back or use a selfie stick when you need more context, and check the edges of the frame for distortion before committing to a long take.

HERO13 Black’s wide action perspective

HERO13 Black is built around wide action-camera capture. The listed 8:7 mode and 156-degree field of view at supported settings are useful when you need to show the environment or preserve framing while the camera moves unpredictably. Wide views also make it easier to keep a subject in frame during a mounted shot.

That width can make a nearby face look less natural than it would with a narrower perspective, especially toward the edges. Position the camera so the subject is not pressed against a corner, and choose the field-of-view option that fits the intended crop rather than automatically using the widest setting.

Resolution and frame-rate choices

Use case Pocket 3 information HERO13 Black information
Normal high-resolution vlog Up to 4K/60 Up to 5.3K/60
Slow motion Up to 4K/120, identified by DJI as a slow-motion mode 4K/120 is listed as a mode
Very high frame rate No 1080p/240 mode is established in the reviewed DJI information 1080p/240 is listed

Do not describe Pocket 3 as recording ordinary 4K/120 video. DJI identifies 4K/120 as slow motion and notes a continuous-clip limit in its product information. That mode is intended to be played back more slowly than it was captured. If you need long, continuous 4K footage at a conventional frame rate, use Pocket 3’s 4K/60 mode.

HERO13 Black’s listed 5.3K/60 mode provides more source pixels than a 4K delivery, which can help when you crop or stabilize in an editor. Its 4K/120 and 1080p/240 modes are useful for action slowed in post-production. Higher resolution and frame rate increase storage and processing demands, so select a mode that your computer, phone and publishing platform can handle.

Water, weather, impact and mounting

When HERO13 Black has the practical advantage

GoPro states that HERO13 Black is waterproof to 33 feet. That rating makes it the clear choice of these two for wet action within the camera’s specified operating limits. Use the required doors, seals and accessories correctly, and verify current limits before relying on the camera in salt water, dirty water, deep water or extreme temperatures.

HERO13 Black also lists built-in mounting options. You can attach it to a compatible mount, handle, tripod arrangement or body-worn setup without turning the camera into a delicate handheld rig. The wide action perspective and HyperSmooth system are designed around that use.

Why Pocket 3 needs a drier, more deliberate setup

The reviewed DJI information does not establish that Pocket 3 is waterproof. Treat it as a camera for dry conditions unless DJI documents a specific protective solution for your planned use. A rain cover or other accessory may protect part of a setup, but do not infer a waterproof rating from the existence of an accessory.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Pocket 3 can still work on a tripod, extension or other support with the appropriate accessory, but its central design assumption is handheld gimbal shooting. If your shot list starts with helmet, surfboard, bike or vehicle mounting, start with HERO13 Black rather than trying to adapt a gimbal camera to an action-camera job.

Audio and microphone decisions

Pocket 3 has three built-in microphones. DJI also describes connection to DJI Mic 2 and support information for third-party microphone connections. That gives a solo vlogger a path from the camera’s internal microphones to a wireless or wired external setup when speech quality, distance or wind makes the built-in microphones insufficient.

GoPro lists voice-oriented audio tuning for HERO13 Black. GoPro also describes a Creator Edition that includes a Media Mod. Those facts establish available audio features and accessories, but they do not prove comparative real-world speech quality against Pocket 3. Built-in microphone claims should not be treated as a substitute for an actual microphone plan.

For either camera, decide where the microphone will be relative to your mouth, how wind will be controlled and whether the receiver can connect without blocking another accessory. Record a short test while walking, listen with headphones and check for clothing rustle, wind overload and radio dropouts before filming an important segment.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Storage cards and recording capacity

DJI lists microSD support up to 1 TB for Pocket 3 and publishes specific recommended cards. GoPro specifies V30 or UHS-3 card ratings for HERO13 Black. Buy according to the exact camera’s current card guidance rather than choosing only by capacity or a generic speed label.

High-resolution and high-frame-rate modes consume storage faster. A 1 TB card may hold substantially more footage than a smaller card, but capacity does not remove the need for backups. Transfer important clips after each shoot, format the card in the camera when appropriate and carry a spare card for a full-day production.

Battery figures, with the test conditions attached

Camera and mode Published runtime Conditions and qualification
Pocket 3, 1080p/24 166 minutes DJI reference data; Wi-Fi and screen off at 25°C. The figure appears in DJI’s 2023 launch announcement and current specifications.
Pocket 3, continuous 4K/60 116 minutes DJI figure from the 2023 launch announcement; DJI cautions that test conditions affect results.
HERO13 Black, 1080p/30 More than 2.5 hours GoPro 2024 launch/product information; product-page testing includes 25°C, wind, stabilization, screen and wireless settings.
HERO13 Black, 4K/30 or 5.3K/30 More than 1.5 hours GoPro 2024 launch/product information under the stated test setup.

These numbers are not an apples-to-apples battery contest. The cameras were measured at different resolutions and frame rates, with different screen, wireless and stabilization settings. Temperature, wind, recording interruptions, card speed and how often you stop and start also affect a shoot. Use the figures to plan charging and spare batteries, not to declare a runtime winner.

Which camera fits common vlogging scenarios?

Walking tours and daily face-to-camera videos

Pick Pocket 3 when the camera is usually in your hand and your face is the main subject. The gimbal, rotatable screen and ActiveTrack address the central problems of this format: keeping motion smooth, checking your composition and remaining framed while you move.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Travel in rain, near water or in dirty environments

Pick HERO13 Black when the camera must tolerate wet conditions within its 33-foot waterproof rating or when a sealed action-camera setup is easier to manage. Verify the operating limits and inspect doors and seals before each wet shoot.

Cycling, skiing, motorsports and body-mounted footage

Pick HERO13 Black for its mounting design, wide action perspective and HyperSmooth stabilization. These features align with a camera attached to equipment or a body, where you cannot constantly adjust a handheld gimbal or monitor a rotatable screen.

Portrait clips made from one recording

Either camera can support a portrait workflow, but they do it differently. Pocket 3 offers a rotatable display and horizontal or vertical shooting modes for direct decisions. HERO13 Black’s 8:7 capture can preserve a tall source frame for later horizontal and vertical crops. Choose direct in-camera framing when you want immediate confidence; choose 8:7 reframing when one take must serve multiple crops.

Slow-motion action inserts

Both cameras list 4K/120 slow-motion capability, while HERO13 Black also lists 1080p/240. Pocket 3’s 4K/120 mode is specifically slow motion and has a continuous-clip limit noted by DJI. Plan short, intentional clips rather than treating that mode as a replacement for normal 4K recording.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Practical setup workflows

Set up Pocket 3 for a solo walking vlog

  1. Insert a microSD card from DJI’s current recommended list and charge the camera before leaving.
  2. Rotate the 2-inch touchscreen into the orientation you plan to publish, then select horizontal or vertical video.
  3. Choose 4K/30 or 4K/60 for normal footage; reserve 4K/120 for clips you intend to slow down.
  4. Set the gimbal behavior for the movement you expect and enable ActiveTrack when keeping yourself or another subject centered is important.
  5. Connect DJI Mic 2 or a supported third-party microphone if the camera will be more than arm’s length away or if wind is present.
  6. Walk for 20 to 30 seconds while monitoring framing and audio. Check that the gimbal is not obstructed and that your microphone connection is recording.
  7. Record a short sample, review it with headphones and then begin the full take.

Set up HERO13 Black for a mounted or action vlog

  1. Use a microSD card meeting GoPro’s V30 or UHS-3 guidance and format it in the camera after confirming that existing footage is backed up.
  2. Choose a resolution and frame rate that match the final delivery: 5.3K/60 for a high-resolution source, 4K/120 or 1080p/240 for slow motion, or an 8:7 mode when you need later portrait and landscape crops.
  3. Select a field of view that leaves enough room for the subject and the planned crop; the widest setting is not automatically the best for a face.
  4. Attach the camera using the built-in mounting option or a compatible mount, then tug the connection gently to check that it is locked.
  5. Enable HyperSmooth and configure the screen and wireless settings you actually need, since these settings affect battery life.
  6. For wet use, inspect the waterproof doors and seals, stay within the 33-foot rating and rinse and dry the camera according to GoPro’s current care guidance.
  7. Record a vibration, wind and speech test from the final mounting position before starting the main sequence.

Accessories that solve real problems

  • External microphone: useful when speech is more important than the camera’s built-in microphone array. Confirm connector, receiver and wind-protection compatibility with the exact camera.
  • Spare batteries and charging: high-resolution recording and bright screens reduce practical shooting time. Plan charging around the published test figures rather than assuming a full day from one battery.
  • Media and backups: carry a second card that meets the camera’s speed requirements and transfer footage before formatting a card.
  • Mounting hardware: HERO13 Black’s built-in mounting design favors action setups; Pocket 3 needs the appropriate support accessory for tripod, extension or other mounted work.
  • Weather protection: use only protection designed for the camera and verify its operating limits. An accessory does not automatically make Pocket 3 waterproof.

What the published specifications do not prove

The official information establishes each camera’s stated modes, stabilization method, hardware and manufacturer test figures. It does not establish a universal winner for image quality, speech quality, stabilization appearance or battery endurance in your conditions. The one-inch sensor in Pocket 3 does not guarantee better images in every light, and HERO13 Black’s 5.3K mode does not guarantee a better vlog if the camera is poorly framed or the audio is unusable.

DJI product line manager Paul Pan described Pocket 3 at its 2023 launch by saying, "With the Osmo Pocket 3, we’ve reimagined handheld imaging, offering users a creative tool that combines precision and portability like never before," This is a company launch statement, not an independent evaluation, so treat it as a description of DJI’s intended positioning.

A simple buying decision

  • Buy Pocket 3 if at least two of these describe your work: you walk and talk, you film yourself alone, you want a rotatable screen, you value mechanical gimbal movement, or you switch between portrait and landscape while recording.
  • Buy HERO13 Black if at least two of these describe your work: you need stated waterproofing, you mount the camera to gear, you record fast action, you want a wide 8:7 source for later crops, or you need an action-camera body built for rugged travel.
  • If speech is your deciding factor, budget attention for microphone placement and wind control instead of choosing from built-in microphone specifications alone.
  • If battery is your deciding factor, compare recording modes and test conditions first; the published runtime figures are not directly comparable.
